Merlion: A Machine Learning Library for Time Series

Aadyot Bhatnagar, Paul Kassianik, Chenghao Liu et al.

We introduce Merlion, an open-source machine learning library for time series. It features a unified interface for many commonly used models and datasets for anomaly detection and forecasting on both univariate and multivariate time series, along with standard pre/post-processing layers. It has several modules to improve ease-of-use, including visualization, anomaly score calibration to improve interpetability, AutoML for hyperparameter tuning and model selection, and model ensembling. Merlion also provides a unique evaluation framework that simulates the live deployment and re-training of a model in production. This library aims to provide engineers and researchers a one-stop solution to rapidly develop models for their specific time series needs and benchmark them across multiple time series datasets. In this technical report, we highlight Merlion's architecture and major functionalities, and we report benchmark numbers across different baseline models and ensembles.

PRACT: Optimizing Principled Reasoning and Acting of LLM Agent

Zhiwei Liu, Weiran Yao, Jianguo Zhang et al. · salesforce, stanford

We introduce the Principled Reasoning and Acting (PRAct) framework, a novel method for learning and enforcing action principles from trajectory data. Central to our approach is the use of text gradients from a reflection and optimization engine to derive these action principles. To adapt action principles to specific task requirements, we propose a new optimization framework, Reflective Principle Optimization (RPO). After execution, RPO employs a reflector to critique current action principles and an optimizer to update them accordingly. We develop the RPO framework under two scenarios: Reward-RPO, which uses environmental rewards for reflection, and Self-RPO, which conducts self-reflection without external rewards. Additionally, two RPO methods, RPO-Traj and RPO-Batch, is introduced to adapt to different settings. Experimental results across four environments demonstrate that the PRAct agent, leveraging the RPO framework, effectively learns and applies action principles to enhance performance.

Foster Strengths and Circumvent Weaknesses: a Speech Enhancement Framework with Two-branch Collaborative Learning

Wenxin Tai, Jiajia Li, Yixiang Wang et al.

Recent single-channel speech enhancement methods usually convert waveform to the time-frequency domain and use magnitude/complex spectrum as the optimizing target. However, both magnitude-spectrum-based methods and complex-spectrum-based methods have their respective pros and cons. In this paper, we propose a unified two-branch framework to foster strengths and circumvent weaknesses of different paradigms. The proposed framework could take full advantage of the apparent spectral regularity in magnitude spectrogram and break the bottleneck that magnitude-based methods have suffered. Within each branch, we use collaborative expert block and its variants as substitutes for regular convolution layers. Experiments on TIMIT benchmark demonstrate that our method is superior to existing state-of-the-art ones.

RUN:Residual U-Net for Computer-Aided Detection of Pulmonary Nodules without Candidate Selection

Tian Lan, Yuanyuan Li, Jonah Kimani Murugi et al.

The early detection and early diagnosis of lung cancer are crucial to improve the survival rate of lung cancer patients. Pulmonary nodules detection results have a significant impact on the later diagnosis. In this work, we propose a new network named RUN to complete nodule detection in a single step by bypassing the candidate selection. The system introduces the shortcut of the residual network to improve the traditional U-Net, thereby solving the disadvantage of poor results due to its lack of depth. Furthermore, we compare the experimental results with the traditional U-Net. We validate our method in LUng Nodule Analysis 2016 (LUNA16) Nodule Detection Challenge. We acquire a sensitivity of 90.90% at 2 false positives per scan and therefore achieve better performance than the current state-of-the-art approaches.
