Rethinking Radiology Report Generation via Causal Inspired Counterfactual Augmentation

Xiao Song, Jiafan Liu, Yun Li et al.

Radiology Report Generation (RRG) draws attention as a vision-and-language interaction of biomedical fields. Previous works inherited the ideology of traditional language generation tasks, aiming to generate paragraphs with high readability as reports. Despite significant progress, the independence between diseases-a specific property of RRG-was neglected, yielding the models being confused by the co-occurrence of diseases brought on by the biased data distribution, thus generating inaccurate reports. In this paper, to rethink this issue, we first model the causal effects between the variables from a causal perspective, through which we prove that the co-occurrence relationships between diseases on the biased distribution function as confounders, confusing the accuracy through two backdoor paths, i.e. the Joint Vision Coupling and the Conditional Sequential Coupling. Then, we proposed a novel model-agnostic counterfactual augmentation method that contains two strategies, i.e. the Prototype-based Counterfactual Sample Synthesis (P-CSS) and the Magic-Cube-like Counterfactual Report Reconstruction (Cube), to intervene the backdoor paths, thus enhancing the accuracy and generalization of RRG models. Experimental results on the widely used MIMIC-CXR dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Additionally, a generalization performance is evaluated on IU X-Ray dataset, which verifies our work can effectively reduce the impact of co-occurrences caused by different distributions on the results.

LIF-Seg: LiDAR and Camera Image Fusion for 3D LiDAR Semantic Segmentation

Lin Zhao, Hui Zhou, Xinge Zhu et al.

Camera and 3D LiDAR sensors have become indispensable devices in modern autonomous driving vehicles, where the camera provides the fine-grained texture, color information in 2D space and LiDAR captures more precise and farther-away distance measurements of the surrounding environments. The complementary information from these two sensors makes the two-modality fusion be a desired option. However, two major issues of the fusion between camera and LiDAR hinder its performance, \ie, how to effectively fuse these two modalities and how to precisely align them (suffering from the weak spatiotemporal synchronization problem). In this paper, we propose a coarse-to-fine LiDAR and camera fusion-based network (termed as LIF-Seg) for LiDAR segmentation. For the first issue, unlike these previous works fusing the point cloud and image information in a one-to-one manner, the proposed method fully utilizes the contextual information of images and introduces a simple but effective early-fusion strategy. Second, due to the weak spatiotemporal synchronization problem, an offset rectification approach is designed to align these two-modality features. The cooperation of these two components leads to the success of the effective camera-LiDAR fusion. Experimental results on the nuScenes dataset show the superiority of the proposed LIF-Seg over existing methods with a large margin. Ablation studies and analyses demonstrate that our proposed LIF-Seg can effectively tackle the weak spatiotemporal synchronization problem.

Temporal-Channel Transformer for 3D Lidar-Based Video Object Detection in Autonomous Driving

Zhenxun Yuan, Xiao Song, Lei Bai et al.

The strong demand of autonomous driving in the industry has lead to strong interest in 3D object detection and resulted in many excellent 3D object detection algorithms. However, the vast majority of algorithms only model single-frame data, ignoring the temporal information of the sequence of data. In this work, we propose a new transformer, called Temporal-Channel Transformer, to model the spatial-temporal domain and channel domain relationships for video object detecting from Lidar data. As a special design of this transformer, the information encoded in the encoder is different from that in the decoder, i.e. the encoder encodes temporal-channel information of multiple frames while the decoder decodes the spatial-channel information for the current frame in a voxel-wise manner. Specifically, the temporal-channel encoder of the transformer is designed to encode the information of different channels and frames by utilizing the correlation among features from different channels and frames. On the other hand, the spatial decoder of the transformer will decode the information for each location of the current frame. Before conducting the object detection with detection head, the gate mechanism is deployed for re-calibrating the features of current frame, which filters out the object irrelevant information by repetitively refine the representation of target frame along with the up-sampling process. Experimental results show that we achieve the state-of-the-art performance in grid voxel-based 3D object detection on the nuScenes benchmark.

Cylinder3D: An Effective 3D Framework for Driving-scene LiDAR Semantic Segmentation

Hui Zhou, Xinge Zhu, Xiao Song et al.

State-of-the-art methods for large-scale driving-scene LiDAR semantic segmentation often project and process the point clouds in the 2D space. The projection methods includes spherical projection, bird-eye view projection, etc. Although this process makes the point cloud suitable for the 2D CNN-based networks, it inevitably alters and abandons the 3D topology and geometric relations. A straightforward solution to tackle the issue of 3D-to-2D projection is to keep the 3D representation and process the points in the 3D space. In this work, we first perform an in-depth analysis for different representations and backbones in 2D and 3D spaces, and reveal the effectiveness of 3D representations and networks on LiDAR segmentation. Then, we develop a 3D cylinder partition and a 3D cylinder convolution based framework, termed as Cylinder3D, which exploits the 3D topology relations and structures of driving-scene point clouds. Moreover, a dimension-decomposition based context modeling module is introduced to explore the high-rank context information in point clouds in a progressive manner. We evaluate the proposed model on a large-scale driving-scene dataset, i.e. SematicKITTI. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance and outperforms existing methods by 6% in terms of mIoU.

AdaStereo: A Simple and Efficient Approach for Adaptive Stereo Matching

Xiao Song, Guorun Yang, Xinge Zhu et al.

Recently, records on stereo matching benchmarks are constantly broken by end-to-end disparity networks. However, the domain adaptation ability of these deep models is quite poor. Addressing such problem, we present a novel domain-adaptive pipeline called AdaStereo that aims to align multi-level representations for deep stereo matching networks. Compared to previous methods for adaptive stereo matching, our AdaStereo realizes a more standard, complete and effective domain adaptation pipeline. Firstly, we propose a non-adversarial progressive color transfer algorithm for input image-level alignment. Secondly, we design an efficient parameter-free cost normalization layer for internal feature-level alignment. Lastly, a highly related auxiliary task, self-supervised occlusion-aware reconstruction is presented to narrow down the gaps in output space. Our AdaStereo models achieve state-of-the-art cross-domain performance on multiple stereo benchmarks, including KITTI, Middlebury, ETH3D, and DrivingStereo, even outperforming disparity networks finetuned with target-domain ground-truths.

EdgeStereo: An Effective Multi-Task Learning Network for Stereo Matching and Edge Detection

Xiao Song, Xu Zhao, Liangji Fang et al.

Recently, leveraging on the development of end-to-end convolutional neural networks (CNNs), deep stereo matching networks have achieved remarkable performance far exceeding traditional approaches. However, state-of-the-art stereo frameworks still have difficulties at finding correct correspondences in texture-less regions, detailed structures, small objects and near boundaries, which could be alleviated by geometric clues such as edge contours and corresponding constraints. To improve the quality of disparity estimates in these challenging areas, we propose an effective multi-task learning network, EdgeStereo, composed of a disparity estimation branch and an edge detection branch, which enables end-to-end predictions of both disparity map and edge map. To effectively incorporate edge cues, we propose the edge-aware smoothness loss and edge feature embedding for inter-task interactions. It is demonstrated that based on our unified model, edge detection task and stereo matching task can promote each other. In addition, we design a compact module called residual pyramid to replace the commonly-used multi-stage cascaded structures or 3-D convolution based regularization modules in current stereo matching networks. By the time of the paper submission, EdgeStereo achieves state-of-art performance on the FlyingThings3D dataset, KITTI 2012 and KITTI 2015 stereo benchmarks, outperforming other published stereo matching methods by a noteworthy margin. EdgeStereo also achieves comparable generalization performance for disparity estimation because of the incorporation of edge cues.

Discriminative Representation Combinations for Accurate Face Spoofing Detection

Xiao Song, Xu Zhao, Liangji Fang et al.

Three discriminative representations for face presentation attack detection are introduced in this paper. Firstly we design a descriptor called spatial pyramid coding micro-texture (SPMT) feature to characterize local appearance information. Secondly we utilize the SSD, which is a deep learning framework for detection, to excavate context cues and conduct end-to-end face presentation attack detection. Finally we design a descriptor called template face matched binocular depth (TFBD) feature to characterize stereo structures of real and fake faces. For accurate presentation attack detection, we also design two kinds of representation combinations. Firstly, we propose a decision-level cascade strategy to combine SPMT with SSD. Secondly, we use a simple score fusion strategy to combine face structure cues (TFBD) with local micro-texture features (SPMT). To demonstrate the effectiveness of our design, we evaluate the representation combination of SPMT and SSD on three public datasets, which outperforms all other state-of-the-art methods. In addition, we evaluate the representation combination of SPMT and TFBD on our dataset and excellent performance is also achieved.

EdgeStereo: A Context Integrated Residual Pyramid Network for Stereo Matching

Xiao Song, Xu Zhao, Hanwen Hu et al.

Recent convolutional neural networks, especially end-to-end disparity estimation models, achieve remarkable performance on stereo matching task. However, existed methods, even with the complicated cascade structure, may fail in the regions of non-textures, boundaries and tiny details. Focus on these problems, we propose a multi-task network EdgeStereo that is composed of a backbone disparity network and an edge sub-network. Given a binocular image pair, our model enables end-to-end prediction of both disparity map and edge map. Basically, we design a context pyramid to encode multi-scale context information in disparity branch, followed by a compact residual pyramid for cascaded refinement. To further preserve subtle details, our EdgeStereo model integrates edge cues by feature embedding and edge-aware smoothness loss regularization. Comparative results demonstrates that stereo matching and edge detection can help each other in the unified model. Furthermore, our method achieves state-of-art performance on both KITTI Stereo and Scene Flow benchmarks, which proves the effectiveness of our design.

Face Spoofing Detection by Fusing Binocular Depth and Spatial Pyramid Coding Micro-Texture Features

Xiao Song, Xu Zhao, Tianwei Lin

Robust features are of vital importance to face spoofing detection, because various situations make feature space extremely complicated to partition. Thus in this paper, two novel and robust features for anti-spoofing are proposed. The first one is a binocular camera based depth feature called Template Face Matched Binocular Depth (TFBD) feature. The second one is a high-level micro-texture based feature called Spatial Pyramid Coding Micro-Texture (SPMT) feature. Novel template face registration algorithm and spatial pyramid coding algorithm are also introduced along with the two novel features. Multi-modal face spoofing detection is implemented based on these two robust features. Experiments are conducted on a widely used dataset and a comprehensive dataset constructed by ourselves. The results reveal that face spoofing detection with the fusion of our proposed features is of strong robustness and time efficiency, meanwhile outperforming other state-of-the-art traditional methods.
