Bounding and Filling: A Fast and Flexible Framework for Image CaptioningZheng Ma, Changxin Wang, Bo Huang et al.
Most image captioning models following an autoregressive manner suffer from significant inference latency. Several models adopted a non-autoregressive manner to speed up the process. However, the vanilla non-autoregressive manner results in subpar performance, since it generates all words simultaneously, which fails to capture the relationships between words in a description. The semi-autoregressive manner employs a partially parallel method to preserve performance, but it sacrifices inference speed. In this paper, we introduce a fast and flexible framework for image captioning called BoFiCap based on bounding and filling techniques. The BoFiCap model leverages the inherent characteristics of image captioning tasks to pre-define bounding boxes for image regions and their relationships. Subsequently, the BoFiCap model fills corresponding words in each box using two-generation manners. Leveraging the box hints, our filling process allows each word to better perceive other words. Additionally, our model offers flexible image description generation: 1) by employing different generation manners based on speed or performance requirements, 2) producing varied sentences based on user-specified boxes. Experimental evaluations on the MS-COCO benchmark dataset demonstrate that our framework in a non-autoregressive manner achieves the state-of-the-art on task-specific metric CIDEr (125.6) while speeding up 9.22x than the baseline model with an autoregressive manner; in a semi-autoregressive manner, our method reaches 128.4 on CIDEr while a 3.69x speedup. Our code and data is available at https://github.com/ChangxinWang/BoFiCap.

MetaSeg: Content-Aware Meta-Net for Omni-Supervised Semantic SegmentationShenwang Jiang, Jianan Li, Ying Wang et al.
Noisy labels, inevitably existing in pseudo segmentation labels generated from weak object-level annotations, severely hampers model optimization for semantic segmentation. Previous works often rely on massive hand-crafted losses and carefully-tuned hyper-parameters to resist noise, suffering poor generalization capability and high model complexity. Inspired by recent advances in meta learning, we argue that rather than struggling to tolerate noise hidden behind clean labels passively, a more feasible solution would be to find out the noisy regions actively, so as to simply ignore them during model optimization. With this in mind, this work presents a novel meta learning based semantic segmentation method, MetaSeg, that comprises a primary content-aware meta-net (CAM-Net) to sever as a noise indicator for an arbitrary segmentation model counterpart. Specifically, CAM-Net learns to generate pixel-wise weights to suppress noisy regions with incorrect pseudo labels while highlighting clean ones by exploiting hybrid strengthened features from image content, providing straightforward and reliable guidance for optimizing the segmentation model. Moreover, to break the barrier of time-consuming training when applying meta learning to common large segmentation models, we further present a new decoupled training strategy that optimizes different model layers in a divide-and-conquer manner. Extensive experiments on object, medical, remote sensing and human segmentation shows that our method achieves superior performance, approaching that of fully supervised settings, which paves a new promising way for omni-supervised semantic segmentation.

WeiPS: a symmetric fusion model framework for large-scale online learningXiang Yu, Fuping Chu, Junqi Wu et al.
The recommendation system is an important commercial application of machine learning, where billions of feed views in the information flow every day. In reality, the interaction between user and item usually makes user's interest changing over time, thus many companies (e.g. ByteDance, Baidu, Alibaba, and Weibo) employ online learning as an effective way to quickly capture user interests. However, hundreds of billions of model parameters present online learning with challenges for real-time model deployment. Besides, model stability is another key point for online learning. To this end, we design and implement a symmetric fusion online learning system framework called WeiPS, which integrates model training and model inference. Specifically, WeiPS carries out second level model deployment by streaming update mechanism to satisfy the consistency requirement. Moreover, it uses multi-level fault tolerance and real-time domino degradation to achieve high availability requirement.

UBER-GNN: A User-Based Embeddings Recommendation based on Graph Neural NetworksBo Huang, Ye Bi, Zhenyu Wu et al.
The problem of session-based recommendation aims to predict user next actions based on session histories. Previous methods models session histories into sequences and estimate user latent features by RNN and GNN methods to make recommendations. However under massive-scale and complicated financial recommendation scenarios with both virtual and real commodities , such methods are not sufficient to represent accurate user latent features and neglect the long-term characteristics of users. To take long-term preference and dynamic interests into account, we propose a novel method, i.e. User-Based Embeddings Recommendation with Graph Neural Network, UBER-GNN for brevity. UBER-GNN takes advantage of structured data to generate longterm user preferences, and transfers session sequences into graphs to generate graph-based dynamic interests. The final user latent feature is then represented as the composition of the long-term preferences and the dynamic interests using attention mechanism. Extensive experiments conducted on real Ping An scenario show that UBER-GNN outperforms the state-of-the-art session-based recommendation methods.

Towards End-to-End Face Recognition through Alignment LearningYuanyi Zhong, Jiansheng Chen, Bo Huang
Plenty of effective methods have been proposed for face recognition during the past decade. Although these methods differ essentially in many aspects, a common practice of them is to specifically align the facial area based on the prior knowledge of human face structure before feature extraction. In most systems, the face alignment module is implemented independently. This has actually caused difficulties in the designing and training of end-to-end face recognition models. In this paper we study the possibility of alignment learning in end-to-end face recognition, in which neither prior knowledge on facial landmarks nor artificially defined geometric transformations are required. Specifically, spatial transformer layers are inserted in front of the feature extraction layers in a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for face recognition. Only human identity clues are used for driving the neural network to automatically learn the most suitable geometric transformation and the most appropriate facial area for the recognition task. To ensure reproducibility, our model is trained purely on the publicly available CASIA-WebFace dataset, and is tested on the Labeled Face in the Wild (LFW) dataset. We have achieved a verification accuracy of 99.08\% which is comparable to state-of-the-art single model based methods.
