VietASR: Achieving Industry-level Vietnamese ASR with 50-hour labeled data and Large-Scale Speech Pretraining

Jianheng Zhuo, Yifan Yang, Yiwen Shao et al.

Automatic speech recognition (ASR) has made remarkable progress but heavily relies on large-scale labeled data, which is scarce for low-resource languages like Vietnamese. While existing systems such as Whisper, USM, and MMS achieve promising performance, their efficacy remains inadequate in terms of training costs, latency, and accessibility. To address these issues, we propose VietASR, a novel ASR training pipeline that leverages vast amounts of unlabeled data and a small set of labeled data. Through multi-iteration ASR-biased self-supervised learning on a large-scale unlabeled dataset, VietASR offers a cost-effective and practical solution for enhancing ASR performance. Experiments demonstrate that pre-training on 70,000-hour unlabeled data and fine-tuning on merely 50-hour labeled data yield a lightweight but powerful ASR model. It outperforms Whisper Large-v3 and commercial ASR systems on real-world data. Our code and models will be open-sourced to facilitate research in low-resource ASR.

Collaborative decoding of critical tokens for boosting factuality of large language models

Lifeng Jin, Baolin Peng, Linfeng Song et al.

The most common training pipeline for large language models includes pretraining, finetuning and aligning phases, with their respective resulting models, such as the pretrained model and the finetuned model. Finetuned and aligned models show improved abilities of instruction following and safe generation, however their abilities to stay factual about the world are impacted by the finetuning process. Furthermore, the common practice of using sampling during generation also increases chances of hallucination. In this work, we introduce a collaborative decoding framework to harness the high factuality within pretrained models through the concept of critical tokens. We first design a critical token classifier to decide which model to use for the next token, and subsequently generates the next token using different decoding strategies. Experiments with different models and datasets show that our decoding framework is able to reduce model hallucination significantly, showcasing the importance of the collaborative decoding framework.

UniCUE: Unified Recognition and Generation Framework for Chinese Cued Speech Video-to-Speech Generation

Jinting Wang, Shan Yang, Chenxing Li et al.

Cued Speech (CS) enhances lipreading via hand coding, offering visual phonemic cues that support precise speech perception for the hearing-impaired. The task of CS Video-to-Speech generation (CSV2S) aims to convert CS videos into intelligible speech signals. Most existing research focuses on CS Recognition (CSR), which transcribes video content into text. Consequently, a common solution for CSV2S is to integrate CSR with a text-to-speech (TTS) system. However, this pipeline relies on text as an intermediate medium, which may lead to error propagation and temporal misalignment between speech and CS video dynamics. In contrast, directly generating audio speech from CS video (direct CSV2S) often suffers from the inherent multimodal complexity and the limited availability of CS data. To address these challenges, we propose UniCUE, the first unified framework for CSV2S that directly generates speech from CS videos without relying on intermediate text. The core innovation of UniCUE lies in integrating an understanding task (CSR) that provides fine-grained CS visual-semantic cues to guide speech generation. Specifically, UniCUE incorporates a pose-aware visual processor, a semantic alignment pool that enables precise visual-semantic mapping, and a VisioPhonetic adapter to bridge the understanding and generation tasks within a unified architecture. To support this framework, we construct UniCUE-HI, a large-scale Mandarin CS dataset containing 11282 videos from 14 cuers, including both hearing-impaired and normal-hearing individuals. Extensive experiments on this dataset demonstrate that UniCUE achieves state-of-the-art performance across multiple evaluation metrics.

WaveDM: Wavelet-Based Diffusion Models for Image Restoration

Yi Huang, Jiancheng Huang, Jianzhuang Liu et al.

Latest diffusion-based methods for many image restoration tasks outperform traditional models, but they encounter the long-time inference problem. To tackle it, this paper proposes a Wavelet-Based Diffusion Model (WaveDM). WaveDM learns the distribution of clean images in the wavelet domain conditioned on the wavelet spectrum of degraded images after wavelet transform, which is more time-saving in each step of sampling than modeling in the spatial domain. To ensure restoration performance, a unique training strategy is proposed where the low-frequency and high-frequency spectrums are learned using distinct modules. In addition, an Efficient Conditional Sampling (ECS) strategy is developed from experiments, which reduces the number of total sampling steps to around 5. Evaluations on twelve benchmark datasets including image raindrop removal, rain steaks removal, dehazing, defocus deblurring, demoiréing, and denoising demonstrate that WaveDM achieves state-of-the-art performance with the efficiency that is comparable to traditional one-pass methods and over 100$\times$ faster than existing image restoration methods using vanilla diffusion models.

A Multi-user Oriented Live Free-viewpoint Video Streaming System Based On View Interpolation

Jingchuan Hu, Shuai Guo, Kai Zhou et al.

As an important application form of immersive multimedia services, free-viewpoint video(FVV) enables users with great immersive experience by strong interaction. However, the computational complexity of virtual view synthesis algorithms poses a significant challenge to the real-time performance of an FVV system. Furthermore, the individuality of user interaction makes it difficult to serve multiple users simultaneously for a system with conventional architecture. In this paper, we novelly introduce a CNN-based view interpolation algorithm to synthesis dense virtual views in real time. Based on this, we also build an end-to-end live free-viewpoint system with a multi-user oriented streaming strategy. Our system can utilize a single edge server to serve multiple users at the same time without having to bring a large view synthesis load on the client side. We analyze the whole system and show that our approaches give the user a pleasant immersive experience, in terms of both visual quality and latency.
