AppAgent: Multimodal Agents as Smartphone Users

Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) have led to the creation of intelligent agents capable of performing complex tasks. This paper introduces a novel LLM-based multimodal agent framework designed to operate smartphone applications. Our framework enables the agent to operate smartphone applications through a simplified action space, mimicking human-like interactions such as tapping and swiping. This novel approach bypasses the need for system back-end access, thereby broadening its applicability across diverse apps. Central to our agent's functionality is its innovative learning method. The agent learns to navigate and use new apps either through autonomous exploration or by observing human demonstrations. This process generates a knowledge base that the agent refers to for executing complex tasks across different applications. To demonstrate the practicality of our agent, we conducted extensive testing over 50 tasks in 10 different applications, including social media, email, maps, shopping, and sophisticated image editing tools. The results affirm our agent's proficiency in handling a diverse array of high-level tasks.

Software-Defined Edge Computing: A New Architecture Paradigm to Support IoT Data Analysis

The rapid deployment of Internet of Things (IoT) applications leads to massive data that need to be processed. These IoT applications have specific communication requirements on latency and bandwidth, and present new features on their generated data such as time-dependency. Therefore, it is desirable to reshape the current IoT architectures by exploring their inherent nature of communication and computing to support smart IoT data process and analysis. We introduce in this paper features of IoT data, trends of IoT network architectures, some problems in IoT data analysis, and their solutions. Specifically, we view that software-defined edge computing is a promising architecture to support the unique needs of IoT data analysis. We further present an experiment on data anomaly detection in this architecture, and the comparison between two architectures for ECG diagnosis. Results show that our method is effective and feasible.

Deep & Cross Network for Ad Click Predictions

Feature engineering has been the key to the success of many prediction models. However, the process is non-trivial and often requires manual feature engineering or exhaustive searching. DNNs are able to automatically learn feature interactions; however, they generate all the interactions implicitly, and are not necessarily efficient in learning all types of cross features. In this paper, we propose the Deep & Cross Network (DCN) which keeps the benefits of a DNN model, and beyond that, it introduces a novel cross network that is more efficient in learning certain bounded-degree feature interactions. In particular, DCN explicitly applies feature crossing at each layer, requires no manual feature engineering, and adds negligible extra complexity to the DNN model. Our experimental results have demonstrated its superiority over the state-of-art algorithms on the CTR prediction dataset and dense classification dataset, in terms of both model accuracy and memory usage.
