Translating Universal Scene Descriptions into Knowledge Graphs for Robotic Environment

Giang Hoang Nguyen, Daniel Bessler, Simon Stelter et al.

Robots performing human-scale manipulation tasks require an extensive amount of knowledge about their surroundings in order to perform their actions competently and human-like. In this work, we investigate the use of virtual reality technology as an implementation for robot environment modeling, and present a technique for translating scene graphs into knowledge bases. To this end, we take advantage of the Universal Scene Description (USD) format which is an emerging standard for the authoring, visualization and simulation of complex environments. We investigate the conversion of USD-based environment models into Knowledge Graph (KG) representations that facilitate semantic querying and integration with additional knowledge sources.

Instance Segmentation under Occlusions via Location-aware Copy-Paste Data Augmentation

Son Nguyen, Mikel Lainsa, Hung Dao et al.

Occlusion is a long-standing problem in computer vision, particularly in instance segmentation. ACM MMSports 2023 DeepSportRadar has introduced a dataset that focuses on segmenting human subjects within a basketball context and a specialized evaluation metric for occlusion scenarios. Given the modest size of the dataset and the highly deformable nature of the objects to be segmented, this challenge demands the application of robust data augmentation techniques and wisely-chosen deep learning architectures. Our work (ranked 1st in the competition) first proposes a novel data augmentation technique, capable of generating more training samples with wider distribution. Then, we adopt a new architecture - Hybrid Task Cascade (HTC) framework with CBNetV2 as backbone and MaskIoU head to improve segmentation performance. Furthermore, we employ a Stochastic Weight Averaging (SWA) training strategy to improve the model's generalization. As a result, we achieve a remarkable occlusion score (OM) of 0.533 on the challenge dataset, securing the top-1 position on the leaderboard. Digital Twin Generation from Visual Data: A Survey

Andrew Melnik, Benjamin Alt, Giang Nguyen et al.

This survey explores recent developments in generating digital twins from videos. Such digital twins can be used for robotics application, media content creation, or design and construction works. We analyze various approaches, including 3D Gaussian Splatting, generative in-painting, semantic segmentation, and foundation models highlighting their advantages and limitations. Additionally, we discuss challenges such as occlusions, lighting variations, and scalability, as well as potential future research directions. This survey aims to provide a comprehensive overview of state-of-the-art methodologies and their implications for real-world applications. VDInstruct: Zero-Shot Key Information Extraction via Content-Aware Vision Tokenization

Son Nguyen, Giang Nguyen, Hung Dao et al.

Key Information Extraction (KIE) underpins the understanding of visual documents (e.g., receipts and contracts) by extracting precise semantic content and accurately capturing spatial structure. Yet existing multimodal large language models (MLLMs) often perform poorly on dense documents and rely on vision tokenization approaches that scale with image size, leading to redundant computation and memory inefficiency. To address these challenges, we introduce VDInstruct, an MLLM that separates spatial region detection from semantic feature extraction. Central to our model is a content-aware tokenization strategy: rather than fragmenting the entire image uniformly, it generates tokens in proportion to document complexity, preserving critical structure while eliminating wasted tokens. Leveraging a three-stage training paradigm, our model achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) results on KIE benchmarks, matching or exceeding the accuracy of leading approaches while reducing the number of image tokens by roughly 3.6x. In zero-shot evaluations, VDInstruct surpasses strong baselines-such as DocOwl 1.5-by +5.5 F1 points, highlighting its robustness to unseen documents. These findings show that content-aware tokenization combined with explicit layout modeling offers a promising direction forward for document understanding. Data, source code, and model weights will be made publicly available.

IRMAC: Interpretable Refined Motifs in Binary Classification for Smart Grid Applications

Rui Yuan, S. Ali Pourmousavi, Wen L. Soong et al.

Modern power systems are experiencing the challenge of high uncertainty with the increasing penetration of renewable energy resources and the electrification of heating systems. In this paradigm shift, understanding electricity users' demand is of utmost value to retailers, aggregators, and policymakers. However, behind-the-meter (BTM) equipment and appliances at the household level are unknown to the other stakeholders mainly due to privacy concerns and tight regulations. In this paper, we seek to identify residential consumers based on their BTM equipment, mainly rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric heating, using imported/purchased energy data from utility meters. To solve this problem with an interpretable, fast, secure, and maintainable solution, we propose an integrated method called Interpretable Refined Motifs And binary Classification (IRMAC). The proposed method comprises a novel shape-based pattern extraction technique, called Refined Motif (RM) discovery, and a single-neuron classifier. The first part extracts a sub-pattern from the long time series considering the frequency of occurrences, average dissimilarity, and time dynamics while emphasising specific times with annotated distances. The second part identifies users' types with linear complexity while preserving the transparency of the algorithms. With the real data from Australia and Denmark, the proposed method is tested and verified in identifying PV owners and electrical heating system users.

ContCap: A scalable framework for continual image captioning

Giang Nguyen, Tae Joon Jun, Trung Tran et al.

While advanced image captioning systems are increasingly describing images coherently and exactly, recent progress in continual learning allows deep learning models to avoid catastrophic forgetting. However, the domain where image captioning working with continual learning has not yet been explored. We define the task in which we consolidate continual learning and image captioning as continual image captioning. In this work, we propose ContCap, a framework generating captions over a series of new tasks coming, seamlessly integrating continual learning into image captioning besides addressing catastrophic forgetting. After proving forgetting in image captioning, we propose various techniques to overcome the forgetting dilemma by taking a simple fine-tuning schema as the baseline. We split MS-COCO 2014 dataset to perform experiments in class-incremental settings without revisiting dataset of previously provided tasks. Experiments show remarkable improvements in the performance on the old tasks while the figures for the new surprisingly surpass fine-tuning. Our framework also offers a scalable solution for continual image or video captioning.
