Oasis: Data Curation and Assessment System for Pretraining of Large Language ModelsTong Zhou, Yubo Chen, Pengfei Cao et al.
Data is one of the most critical elements in building a large language model. However, existing systems either fail to customize a corpus curation pipeline or neglect to leverage comprehensive corpus assessment for iterative optimization of the curation. To this end, we present a pretraining corpus curation and assessment platform called Oasis -- a one-stop system for data quality improvement and quantification with user-friendly interactive interfaces. Specifically, the interactive modular rule filter module can devise customized rules according to explicit feedback. The debiased neural filter module builds the quality classification dataset in a negative-centric manner to remove the undesired bias. The adaptive document deduplication module could execute large-scale deduplication with limited memory resources. These three parts constitute the customized data curation module. And in the holistic data assessment module, a corpus can be assessed in local and global views, with three evaluation means including human, GPT-4, and heuristic metrics. We exhibit a complete process to use Oasis for the curation and assessment of pretraining data. In addition, an 800GB bilingual corpus curated by Oasis is publicly released.

THMA: Tencent HD Map AI System for Creating HD Map AnnotationsKun Tang, Xu Cao, Zhipeng Cao et al.
Nowadays, autonomous vehicle technology is becoming more and more mature. Critical to progress and safety, high-definition (HD) maps, a type of centimeter-level map collected using a laser sensor, provide accurate descriptions of the surrounding environment. The key challenge of HD map production is efficient, high-quality collection and annotation of large-volume datasets. Due to the demand for high quality, HD map production requires significant manual human effort to create annotations, a very time-consuming and costly process for the map industry. In order to reduce manual annotation burdens, many artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have been developed to pre-label the HD maps. However, there still exists a large gap between AI algorithms and the traditional manual HD map production pipelines in accuracy and robustness. Furthermore, it is also very resource-costly to build large-scale annotated datasets and advanced machine learning algorithms for AI-based HD map automatic labeling systems. In this paper, we introduce the Tencent HD Map AI (THMA) system, an innovative end-to-end, AI-based, active learning HD map labeling system capable of producing and labeling HD maps with a scale of hundreds of thousands of kilometers. In THMA, we train AI models directly from massive HD map datasets via supervised, self-supervised, and weakly supervised learning to achieve high accuracy and efficiency required by downstream users. THMA has been deployed by the Tencent Map team to provide services to downstream companies and users, serving over 1,000 labeling workers and producing more than 30,000 kilometers of HD map data per day at most. More than 90 percent of the HD map data in Tencent Map is labeled automatically by THMA, accelerating the traditional HD map labeling process by more than ten times.

Multi-granulariy Time-based Transformer for Knowledge TracingTong Zhou
In this paper, we present a transformer architecture for predicting student performance on standardized tests. Specifically, we leverage students historical data, including their past test scores, study habits, and other relevant information, to create a personalized model for each student. We then use these models to predict their future performance on a given test. Applying this model to the RIIID dataset, we demonstrate that using multiple granularities for temporal features as the decoder input significantly improve model performance. Our results also show the effectiveness of our approach, with substantial improvements over the LightGBM method. Our work contributes to the growing field of AI in education, providing a scalable and accurate tool for predicting student outcomes.

The advent of foundation models, which are pre-trained on vast datasets, has ushered in a new era of computer vision, characterized by their robustness and remarkable zero-shot generalization capabilities. Mirroring the transformative impact of foundation models like large language models (LLMs) in natural language processing, visual foundation models (VFMs) have become a catalyst for groundbreaking developments in computer vision. This review paper delineates the pivotal trajectories of VFMs, emphasizing their scalability and proficiency in generative tasks such as text-to-image synthesis, as well as their adeptness in discriminative tasks including image segmentation. While generative and discriminative models have historically charted distinct paths, we undertake a comprehensive examination of the recent strides made by VFMs in both domains, elucidating their origins, seminal breakthroughs, and pivotal methodologies. Additionally, we collate and discuss the extensive resources that facilitate the development of VFMs and address the challenges that pave the way for future research endeavors. A crucial direction for forthcoming innovation is the amalgamation of generative and discriminative paradigms. The nascent application of generative models within discriminative contexts signifies the early stages of this confluence. This survey aspires to be a contemporary compendium for scholars and practitioners alike, charting the course of VFMs and illuminating their multifaceted landscape.

Improved Sales Forecasting using Trend and Seasonality Decomposition with LightGBMTong Zhou
Retail sales forecasting presents a significant challenge for large retailers such as Walmart and Amazon, due to the vast assortment of products, geographical location heterogeneity, seasonality, and external factors including weather, local economic conditions, and geopolitical events. Various methods have been employed to tackle this challenge, including traditional time series models, machine learning models, and neural network mechanisms, but the difficulty persists. Categorizing data into relevant groups has been shown to improve sales forecast accuracy as time series from different categories may exhibit distinct patterns. In this paper, we propose a new measure to indicate the unique impacts of the trend and seasonality components on a time series and suggest grouping time series based on this measure. We apply this approach to Walmart sales data from 01/29/2011 to 05/22/2016 and generate sales forecasts from 05/23/2016 to 06/19/2016. Our experiments show that the proposed strategy can achieve improved accuracy. Furthermore, we present a robust pipeline for conducting retail sales forecasting.

Nonparametric Identification and Estimation of Earnings Dynamics using a Hidden Markov Model: Evidence from the PSIDTong Zhou
This paper presents a hidden Markov model designed to investigate the complex nature of earnings persistence. The proposed model assumes that the residuals of log-earnings consist of a persistent component and a transitory component, both following general Markov processes. Nonparametric identification is achieved through spectral decomposition of linear operators, and a modified stochastic EM algorithm is introduced for model estimation. Applying the framework to the Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) dataset, we find that the earnings process displays nonlinear persistence, conditional skewness, and conditional kurtosis. Additionally, the transitory component is found to possess non-Gaussian properties, resulting in a significantly asymmetric distributional impact when high-earning households face negative shocks or low-earning households encounter positive shocks. Our empirical findings also reveal the presence of ARCH effects in earnings at horizons ranging from 2 to 8 years, further highlighting the complex dynamics of earnings persistence.

TFDPM: Attack detection for cyber-physical systems with diffusion probabilistic modelsTijin Yan, Tong Zhou, Yufeng Zhan et al.
With the development of AIoT, data-driven attack detection methods for cyber-physical systems (CPSs) have attracted lots of attention. However, existing methods usually adopt tractable distributions to approximate data distributions, which are not suitable for complex systems. Besides, the correlation of the data in different channels does not attract sufficient attention. To address these issues, we use energy-based generative models, which are less restrictive on functional forms of the data distribution. In addition, graph neural networks are used to explicitly model the correlation of the data in different channels. In the end, we propose TFDPM, a general framework for attack detection tasks in CPSs. It simultaneously extracts temporal pattern and feature pattern given the historical data. Then extract features are sent to a conditional diffusion probabilistic model. Predicted values can be obtained with the conditional generative network and attacks are detected based on the difference between predicted values and observed values. In addition, to realize real-time detection, a conditional noise scheduling network is proposed to accelerate the prediction process. Experimental results show that TFDPM outperforms existing state-of-the-art attack detection methods. The noise scheduling network increases the detection speed by three times.

Online State-Time Trajectory Planning Using Timed-ESDF in Highly Dynamic EnvironmentsDelong Zhu, Tong Zhou, Jiahui Lin et al.
Online state-time trajectory planning in highly dynamic environments remains an unsolved problem due to the unpredictable motions of moving obstacles and the curse of dimensionality from the state-time space. Existing state-time planners are typically implemented based on randomized sampling approaches or path searching on discretized state graph. The smoothness, path clearance, and planning efficiency of these planners are usually not satisfying. In this work, we propose a gradient-based planner over the state-time space for online trajectory generation in highly dynamic environments. To enable the gradient-based optimization, we propose a Timed-ESDT that supports distance and gradient queries with state-time keys. Based on the Timed-ESDT, we also define a smooth prior and an obstacle likelihood function that is compatible with the state-time space. The trajectory planning is then formulated to a MAP problem and solved by an efficient numerical optimizer. Moreover, to improve the optimality of the planner, we also define a state-time graph and then conduct path searching on it to find a better initialization for the optimizer. By integrating the graph searching, the planning quality is significantly improved. Experiment results on simulated and benchmark datasets show that our planner can outperform the state-of-the-art methods, demonstrating its significant advantages over the traditional ones.

Learning Oracle Attention for High-fidelity Face CompletionTong Zhou, Changxing Ding, Shaowen Lin et al.
High-fidelity face completion is a challenging task due to the rich and subtle facial textures involved. What makes it more complicated is the correlations between different facial components, for example, the symmetry in texture and structure between both eyes. While recent works adopted the attention mechanism to learn the contextual relations among elements of the face, they have largely overlooked the disastrous impacts of inaccurate attention scores; in addition, they fail to pay sufficient attention to key facial components, the completion results of which largely determine the authenticity of a face image. Accordingly, in this paper, we design a comprehensive framework for face completion based on the U-Net structure. Specifically, we propose a dual spatial attention module to efficiently learn the correlations between facial textures at multiple scales; moreover, we provide an oracle supervision signal to the attention module to ensure that the obtained attention scores are reasonable. Furthermore, we take the location of the facial components as prior knowledge and impose a multi-discriminator on these regions, with which the fidelity of facial components is significantly promoted. Extensive experiments on two high-resolution face datasets including CelebA-HQ and Flickr-Faces-HQ demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods by large margins.
