Segment as Points for Efficient Online Multi-Object Tracking and Segmentation

Zhenbo Xu, Wei Zhang, Xiao Tan et al.

Current multi-object tracking and segmentation (MOTS) methods follow the tracking-by-detection paradigm and adopt convolutions for feature extraction. However, as affected by the inherent receptive field, convolution based feature extraction inevitably mixes up the foreground features and the background features, resulting in ambiguities in the subsequent instance association. In this paper, we propose a highly effective method for learning instance embeddings based on segments by converting the compact image representation to un-ordered 2D point cloud representation. Our method generates a new tracking-by-points paradigm where discriminative instance embeddings are learned from randomly selected points rather than images. Furthermore, multiple informative data modalities are converted into point-wise representations to enrich point-wise features. The resulting online MOTS framework, named PointTrack, surpasses all the state-of-the-art methods including 3D tracking methods by large margins (5.4% higher MOTSA and 18 times faster over MOTSFusion) with the near real-time speed (22 FPS). Evaluations across three datasets demonstrate both the effectiveness and efficiency of our method. Moreover, based on the observation that current MOTS datasets lack crowded scenes, we build a more challenging MOTS dataset named APOLLO MOTS with higher instance density. Both APOLLO MOTS and our codes are publicly available at https://github.com/detectRecog/PointTrack.

3D Lymphoma Segmentation on PET/CT Images via Multi-Scale Information Fusion with Cross-Attention

Huan Huang, Liheng Qiu, Shenmiao Yang et al.

Background: Accurate segmentation of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) lesions is challenging due to their complex patterns in medical imaging. Objective: This study aims to develop a precise segmentation method for DLBCL using 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) images. Methods: We propose a 3D dual-branch encoder segmentation method using shifted window transformers and a Multi-Scale Information Fusion (MSIF) module. To enhance feature integration, the MSIF module performs multi-scale feature fusion using cross-attention mechanisms with a shifted window framework. A gated neural network within the MSIF module dynamically balances the contributions from each modality. The model was optimized using the Dice Similarity Coefficient (DSC) loss function. Additionally, we computed the total metabolic tumor volume (TMTV) and performed statistical analyses. Results: The model was trained and validated on a dataset of 165 DLBCL patients using 5-fold cross-validation, achieving a DSC of 0.7512. Statistical analysis showed a significant improvement over comparative methods (p < 0.05). Additionally, a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.91 and an R^2 of 0.89 were observed when comparing manual annotations to segmentation results for TMTV measurement. Conclusion: This study presents an effective automatic segmentation method for DLBCL that leverages the complementary strengths of PET and CT imaging. Our method has the potential to improve diagnostic interpretations and assist in treatment planning for DLBCL patients.

Anatomy Guided Coronary Artery Segmentation from CCTA Using Spatial Frequency Joint Modeling

Huan Huang, Michele Esposito, Chen Zhao

Accurate coronary artery segmentation from coronary computed tomography angiography is essential for quantitative coronary analysis and clinical decision support. Nevertheless, reliable segmentation remains challenging because of small vessel calibers, complex branching, blurred boundaries, and myocardial interference. We propose a coronary artery segmentation framework that integrates myocardial anatomical priors, structure aware feature encoding, and three dimensional wavelet inverse wavelet transformations. Myocardial priors and residual attention based feature enhancement are incorporated during encoding to strengthen coronary structure representation. Wavelet inverse wavelet based downsampling and upsampling enable joint spatial frequency modeling and preserve multi scale structural consistency, while a multi scale feature fusion module integrates semantic and geometric information in the decoding stage. The model is trained and evaluated on the public ImageCAS dataset using a 3D overlapping patch based strategy with a 7:1:2 split for training, validation, and testing. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method achieves a Dice coefficient of 0.8082, Sensitivity of 0.7946, Precision of 0.8471, and an HD95 of 9.77 mm, outperforming several mainstream segmentation models. Ablation studies further confirm the complementary contributions of individual components. The proposed method enables more stable and consistent coronary artery segmentation under complex geometric conditions, providing reliable segmentation results for subsequent coronary structure analysis tasks.
