MaskCLIP: Masked Self-Distillation Advances Contrastive Language-Image PretrainingXiaoyi Dong, Jianmin Bao, Yinglin Zheng et al.
This paper presents a simple yet effective framework MaskCLIP, which incorporates a newly proposed masked self-distillation into contrastive language-image pretraining. The core idea of masked self-distillation is to distill representation from a full image to the representation predicted from a masked image. Such incorporation enjoys two vital benefits. First, masked self-distillation targets local patch representation learning, which is complementary to vision-language contrastive focusing on text-related representation. Second, masked self-distillation is also consistent with vision-language contrastive from the perspective of training objective as both utilize the visual encoder for feature aligning, and thus is able to learn local semantics getting indirect supervision from the language. We provide specially designed experiments with a comprehensive analysis to validate the two benefits. Symmetrically, we also introduce the local semantic supervision into the text branch, which further improves the pretraining performance. With extensive experiments, we show that MaskCLIP, when applied to various challenging downstream tasks, achieves superior results in linear probing, finetuning, and zero-shot performance with the guidance of the language encoder. Code will be release at \url{https://github.com/LightDXY/MaskCLIP}.
Real-Time Neural Character Rendering with Pose-Guided Multiplane ImagesHao Ouyang, Bo Zhang, Pan Zhang et al. · microsoft-research
We propose pose-guided multiplane image (MPI) synthesis which can render an animatable character in real scenes with photorealistic quality. We use a portable camera rig to capture the multi-view images along with the driving signal for the moving subject. Our method generalizes the image-to-image translation paradigm, which translates the human pose to a 3D scene representation -- MPIs that can be rendered in free viewpoints, using the multi-views captures as supervision. To fully cultivate the potential of MPI, we propose depth-adaptive MPI which can be learned using variable exposure images while being robust to inaccurate camera registration. Our method demonstrates advantageous novel-view synthesis quality over the state-of-the-art approaches for characters with challenging motions. Moreover, the proposed method is generalizable to novel combinations of training poses and can be explicitly controlled. Our method achieves such expressive and animatable character rendering all in real time, serving as a promising solution for practical applications.
InterFormer: Real-time Interactive Image SegmentationYou Huang, Hao Yang, Ke Sun et al.
Interactive image segmentation enables annotators to efficiently perform pixel-level annotation for segmentation tasks. However, the existing interactive segmentation pipeline suffers from inefficient computations of interactive models because of the following two issues. First, annotators' later click is based on models' feedback of annotators' former click. This serial interaction is unable to utilize model's parallelism capabilities. Second, in each interaction step, the model handles the invariant image along with the sparse variable clicks, resulting in a process that's highly repetitive and redundant. For efficient computations, we propose a method named InterFormer that follows a new pipeline to address these issues. InterFormer extracts and preprocesses the computationally time-consuming part i.e. image processing from the existing process. Specifically, InterFormer employs a large vision transformer (ViT) on high-performance devices to preprocess images in parallel, and then uses a lightweight module called interactive multi-head self attention (I-MSA) for interactive segmentation. Furthermore, the I-MSA module's deployment on low-power devices extends the practical application of interactive segmentation. The I-MSA module utilizes the preprocessed features to efficiently response to the annotator inputs in real-time. The experiments on several datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of InterFormer, which outperforms previous interactive segmentation models in terms of computational efficiency and segmentation quality, achieve real-time high-quality interactive segmentation on CPU-only devices. Boosting 3D Object Detection via Object-Focused Image FusionHao Yang, Chen Shi, Yihong Chen et al.
3D object detection has achieved remarkable progress by taking point clouds as the only input. However, point clouds often suffer from incomplete geometric structures and the lack of semantic information, which makes detectors hard to accurately classify detected objects. In this work, we focus on how to effectively utilize object-level information from images to boost the performance of point-based 3D detector. We present DeMF, a simple yet effective method to fuse image information into point features. Given a set of point features and image feature maps, DeMF adaptively aggregates image features by taking the projected 2D location of the 3D point as reference. We evaluate our method on the challenging SUN RGB-D dataset, improving state-of-the-art results by a large margin (+2.1 mAP@0.25 and +2.3mAP@0.5). SwiftAvatar: Efficient Auto-Creation of Parameterized Stylized Character on Arbitrary Avatar EnginesShizun Wang, Weihong Zeng, Xu Wang et al.
The creation of a parameterized stylized character involves careful selection of numerous parameters, also known as the "avatar vectors" that can be interpreted by the avatar engine. Existing unsupervised avatar vector estimation methods that auto-create avatars for users, however, often fail to work because of the domain gap between realistic faces and stylized avatar images. To this end, we propose SwiftAvatar, a novel avatar auto-creation framework that is evidently superior to previous works. SwiftAvatar introduces dual-domain generators to create pairs of realistic faces and avatar images using shared latent codes. The latent codes can then be bridged with the avatar vectors as pairs, by performing GAN inversion on the avatar images rendered from the engine using avatar vectors. Through this way, we are able to synthesize paired data in high-quality as many as possible, consisting of avatar vectors and their corresponding realistic faces. We also propose semantic augmentation to improve the diversity of synthesis. Finally, a light-weight avatar vector estimator is trained on the synthetic pairs to implement efficient auto-creation. Our experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of SwiftAvatar on two different avatar engines. The superiority and advantageous flexibility of SwiftAvatar are also verified in both subjective and objective evaluations.

ContraNeRF: Generalizable Neural Radiance Fields for Synthetic-to-real Novel View Synthesis via Contrastive LearningHao Yang, Lanqing Hong, Aoxue Li et al.
Although many recent works have investigated generalizable NeRF-based novel view synthesis for unseen scenes, they seldom consider the synthetic-to-real generalization, which is desired in many practical applications. In this work, we first investigate the effects of synthetic data in synthetic-to-real novel view synthesis and surprisingly observe that models trained with synthetic data tend to produce sharper but less accurate volume densities. For pixels where the volume densities are correct, fine-grained details will be obtained. Otherwise, severe artifacts will be produced. To maintain the advantages of using synthetic data while avoiding its negative effects, we propose to introduce geometry-aware contrastive learning to learn multi-view consistent features with geometric constraints. Meanwhile, we adopt cross-view attention to further enhance the geometry perception of features by querying features across input views. Experiments demonstrate that under the synthetic-to-real setting, our method can render images with higher quality and better fine-grained details, outperforming existing generalizable novel view synthesis methods in terms of PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS. When trained on real data, our method also achieves state-of-the-art results.

ComplETR: Reducing the cost of annotations for object detection in dense scenes with vision transformersAchin Jain, Kibok Lee, Gurumurthy Swaminathan et al.
Annotating bounding boxes for object detection is expensive, time-consuming, and error-prone. In this work, we propose a DETR based framework called ComplETR that is designed to explicitly complete missing annotations in partially annotated dense scene datasets. This reduces the need to annotate every object instance in the scene thereby reducing annotation cost. ComplETR augments object queries in DETR decoder with patch information of objects in the image. Combined with a matching loss, it can effectively find objects that are similar to the input patch and complete the missing annotations. We show that our framework outperforms the state-of-the-art methods such as Soft Sampling and Unbiased Teacher by itself, while at the same time can be used in conjunction with these methods to further improve their performance. Our framework is also agnostic to the choice of the downstream object detectors; we show performance improvement for several popular detectors such as Faster R-CNN, Cascade R-CNN, CenterNet2, and Deformable DETR on multiple dense scene datasets.

PhotoVerse: Tuning-Free Image Customization with Text-to-Image Diffusion ModelsLi Chen, Mengyi Zhao, Yiheng Liu et al.
Personalized text-to-image generation has emerged as a powerful and sought-after tool, empowering users to create customized images based on their specific concepts and prompts. However, existing approaches to personalization encounter multiple challenges, including long tuning times, large storage requirements, the necessity for multiple input images per identity, and limitations in preserving identity and editability. To address these obstacles, we present PhotoVerse, an innovative methodology that incorporates a dual-branch conditioning mechanism in both text and image domains, providing effective control over the image generation process. Furthermore, we introduce facial identity loss as a novel component to enhance the preservation of identity during training. Remarkably, our proposed PhotoVerse eliminates the need for test time tuning and relies solely on a single facial photo of the target identity, significantly reducing the resource cost associated with image generation. After a single training phase, our approach enables generating high-quality images within only a few seconds. Moreover, our method can produce diverse images that encompass various scenes and styles. The extensive evaluation demonstrates the superior performance of our approach, which achieves the dual objectives of preserving identity and facilitating editability. UAV 3-D path planning based on MOEA/D with adaptive areal weight adjustmentYougang Xiao, Hao Yang, Huan Liu et al.
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are desirable platforms for time-efficient and cost-effective task execution. 3-D path planning is a key challenge for task decision-making. This paper proposes an improved multi-objective evolutionary algorithm based on decomposition (MOEA/D) with an adaptive areal weight adjustment (AAWA) strategy to make a tradeoff between the total flight path length and the terrain threat. AAWA is designed to improve the diversity of the solutions. More specifically, AAWA first removes a crowded individual and its weight vector from the current population and then adds a sparse individual from the external elite population to the current population. To enable the newly-added individual to evolve towards the sparser area of the population in the objective space, its weight vector is constructed by the objective function value of its neighbors. The effectiveness of MOEA/D-AAWA is validated in twenty synthetic scenarios with different number of obstacles and four realistic scenarios in comparison with other three classical methods.

FreeEnricher: Enriching Face Landmarks without Additional CostYangyu Huang, Xi Chen, Jongyoo Kim et al.
Recent years have witnessed significant growth of face alignment. Though dense facial landmark is highly demanded in various scenarios, e.g., cosmetic medicine and facial beautification, most works only consider sparse face alignment. To address this problem, we present a framework that can enrich landmark density by existing sparse landmark datasets, e.g., 300W with 68 points and WFLW with 98 points. Firstly, we observe that the local patches along each semantic contour are highly similar in appearance. Then, we propose a weakly-supervised idea of learning the refinement ability on original sparse landmarks and adapting this ability to enriched dense landmarks. Meanwhile, several operators are devised and organized together to implement the idea. Finally, the trained model is applied as a plug-and-play module to the existing face alignment networks. To evaluate our method, we manually label the dense landmarks on 300W testset. Our method yields state-of-the-art accuracy not only in newly-constructed dense 300W testset but also in the original sparse 300W and WFLW testsets without additional cost.

NAVERO: Unlocking Fine-Grained Semantics for Video-Language CompositionalityChaofan Tao, Gukyeong Kwon, Varad Gunjal et al.
We study the capability of Video-Language (VidL) models in understanding compositions between objects, attributes, actions and their relations. Composition understanding becomes particularly challenging for video data since the compositional relations rapidly change over time in videos. We first build a benchmark named AARO to evaluate composition understanding related to actions on top of spatial concepts. The benchmark is constructed by generating negative texts with incorrect action descriptions for a given video and the model is expected to pair a positive text with its corresponding video. Furthermore, we propose a training method called NAVERO which utilizes video-text data augmented with negative texts to enhance composition understanding. We also develop a negative-augmented visual-language matching loss which is used explicitly to benefit from the generated negative text. We compare NAVERO with other state-of-the-art methods in terms of compositional understanding as well as video-text retrieval performance. NAVERO achieves significant improvement over other methods for both video-language and image-language composition understanding, while maintaining strong performance on traditional text-video retrieval tasks.
Large-Scale Pre-training for Person Re-identification with Noisy LabelsDengpan Fu, Dongdong Chen, Hao Yang et al.
This paper aims to address the problem of pre-training for person re-identification (Re-ID) with noisy labels. To setup the pre-training task, we apply a simple online multi-object tracking system on raw videos of an existing unlabeled Re-ID dataset "LUPerson" nd build the Noisy Labeled variant called "LUPerson-NL". Since theses ID labels automatically derived from tracklets inevitably contain noises, we develop a large-scale Pre-training framework utilizing Noisy Labels (PNL), which consists of three learning modules: supervised Re-ID learning, prototype-based contrastive learning, and label-guided contrastive learning. In principle, joint learning of these three modules not only clusters similar examples to one prototype, but also rectifies noisy labels based on the prototype assignment. We demonstrate that learning directly from raw videos is a promising alternative for pre-training, which utilizes spatial and temporal correlations as weak supervision. This simple pre-training task provides a scalable way to learn SOTA Re-ID representations from scratch on "LUPerson-NL" without bells and whistles. For example, by applying on the same supervised Re-ID method MGN, our pre-trained model improves the mAP over the unsupervised pre-training counterpart by 5.7%, 2.2%, 2.3% on CUHK03, DukeMTMC, and MSMT17 respectively. Under the small-scale or few-shot setting, the performance gain is even more significant, suggesting a better transferability of the learned representation. Omni-DETR: Omni-Supervised Object Detection with TransformersPei Wang, Zhaowei Cai, Hao Yang et al.
We consider the problem of omni-supervised object detection, which can use unlabeled, fully labeled and weakly labeled annotations, such as image tags, counts, points, etc., for object detection. This is enabled by a unified architecture, Omni-DETR, based on the recent progress on student-teacher framework and end-to-end transformer based object detection. Under this unified architecture, different types of weak labels can be leveraged to generate accurate pseudo labels, by a bipartite matching based filtering mechanism, for the model to learn. In the experiments, Omni-DETR has achieved state-of-the-art results on multiple datasets and settings. And we have found that weak annotations can help to improve detection performance and a mixture of them can achieve a better trade-off between annotation cost and accuracy than the standard complete annotation. These findings could encourage larger object detection datasets with mixture annotations. The code is available at https://github.com/amazon-research/omni-detr.

Gated Multimodal Graph Learning for Personalized RecommendationSibei Liu, Yuanzhe Zhang, Xiang Li et al.
Multimodal recommendation has emerged as a promising solution to alleviate the cold-start and sparsity problems in collaborative filtering by incorporating rich content information, such as product images and textual descriptions. However, effectively integrating heterogeneous modalities into a unified recommendation framework remains a challenge. Existing approaches often rely on fixed fusion strategies or complex architectures , which may fail to adapt to modality quality variance or introduce unnecessary computational overhead. In this work, we propose RLMultimodalRec, a lightweight and modular recommendation framework that combines graph-based user modeling with adaptive multimodal item encoding. The model employs a gated fusion module to dynamically balance the contribution of visual and textual modalities, enabling fine-grained and content-aware item representations. Meanwhile, a two-layer LightGCN encoder captures high-order collaborative signals by propagating embeddings over the user-item interaction graph without relying on nonlinear transformations. We evaluate our model on a real-world dataset from the Amazon product domain. Experimental results demonstrate that RLMultimodalRec consistently outperforms several competitive baselines, including collaborative filtering, visual-aware, and multimodal GNN-based methods. The proposed approach achieves significant improvements in top-K recommendation metrics while maintaining scalability and interpretability, making it suitable for practical deployment.

MLIP: Medical Language-Image Pre-training with Masked Local Representation LearningJiarun Liu, Hong-Yu Zhou, Cheng Li et al.
Existing contrastive language-image pre-training aims to learn a joint representation by matching abundant image-text pairs. However, the number of image-text pairs in medical datasets is usually orders of magnitude smaller than that in natural datasets. Besides, medical image-text pairs often involve numerous complex fine-grained correspondences. This paper aims to enhance the data efficiency by introducing multiple-to-multiple local relationship modeling to capture denser supervisions. More specifically, we propose a Medical Language-Image Pre-training (MLIP) framework, which exploits the limited image-text medical data more efficiently through patch-sentence matching. Furthermore, we introduce a masked contrastive learning strategy with semantic integrity estimation to reduce redundancy in images while preserving the underlying semantics. Our evaluation results show that MLIP outperforms previous work in zero/few-shot classification and few-shot segmentation tasks by a large margin.

Mixed-Query Transformer: A Unified Image Segmentation ArchitecturePei Wang, Zhaowei Cai, Hao Yang et al.
Existing unified image segmentation models either employ a unified architecture across multiple tasks but use separate weights tailored to each dataset, or apply a single set of weights to multiple datasets but are limited to a single task. In this paper, we introduce the Mixed-Query Transformer (MQ-Former), a unified architecture for multi-task and multi-dataset image segmentation using a single set of weights. To enable this, we propose a mixed query strategy, which can effectively and dynamically accommodate different types of objects without heuristic designs. In addition, the unified architecture allows us to use data augmentation with synthetic masks and captions to further improve model generalization. Experiments demonstrate that MQ-Former can not only effectively handle multiple segmentation datasets and tasks compared to specialized state-of-the-art models with competitive performance, but also generalize better to open-set segmentation tasks, evidenced by over 7 points higher performance than the prior art on the open-vocabulary SeginW benchmark.

Consistency Enhancement-Based Deep Multiview Clustering via Contrastive LearningHao Yang, Hua Mao, Wai Lok Woo et al.
Multiview clustering (MVC) segregates data samples into meaningful clusters by synthesizing information across multiple views. Moreover, deep learning-based methods have demonstrated their strong feature learning capabilities in MVC scenarios. However, effectively generalizing feature representations while maintaining consistency is still an intractable problem. In addition, most existing deep clustering methods based on contrastive learning overlook the consistency of the clustering representations during the clustering process. In this paper, we show how the above problems can be overcome and propose a consistent enhancement-based deep MVC method via contrastive learning (CCEC). Specifically, semantic connection blocks are incorporated into a feature representation to preserve the consistent information among multiple views. Furthermore, the representation process for clustering is enhanced through spectral clustering, and the consistency across multiple views is improved. Experiments conducted on five datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our method in comparison with the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Musketeer: Joint Training for Multi-task Vision Language Model with Task Explanation PromptsZhaoyang Zhang, Yantao Shen, Kunyu Shi et al.
We present a vision-language model whose parameters are jointly trained on all tasks and fully shared among multiple heterogeneous tasks which may interfere with each other, resulting in a single model which we named Musketeer. The integration of knowledge across heterogeneous tasks is enabled by a novel feature called Task Explanation Prompt (TEP). With rich and structured information such as task input/output format, TEP reduces interference among tasks, allowing the model to focus on their shared structure. With a single model, Musketeer achieves results comparable to or better than strong baselines trained on single tasks, almost uniformly across multiple tasks.
