Large-scale single-photon imagingLiheng Bian, Haoze Song, Lintao Peng et al.
Benefiting from its single-photon sensitivity, single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) array has been widely applied in various fields such as fluorescence lifetime imaging and quantum computing. However, large-scale high-fidelity single-photon imaging remains a big challenge, due to the complex hardware manufacture craft and heavy noise disturbance of SPAD arrays. In this work, we introduce deep learning into SPAD, enabling super-resolution single-photon imaging over an order of magnitude, with significant enhancement of bit depth and imaging quality. We first studied the complex photon flow model of SPAD electronics to accurately characterize multiple physical noise sources, and collected a real SPAD image dataset (64 $\times$ 32 pixels, 90 scenes, 10 different bit depth, 3 different illumination flux, 2790 images in total) to calibrate noise model parameters. With this real-world physical noise model, we for the first time synthesized a large-scale realistic single-photon image dataset (image pairs of 5 different resolutions with maximum megapixels, 17250 scenes, 10 different bit depth, 3 different illumination flux, 2.6 million images in total) for subsequent network training. To tackle the severe super-resolution challenge of SPAD inputs with low bit depth, low resolution, and heavy noise, we further built a deep transformer network with a content-adaptive self-attention mechanism and gated fusion modules, which can dig global contextual features to remove multi-source noise and extract full-frequency details. We applied the technique on a series of experiments including macroscopic and microscopic imaging, microfluidic inspection, and Fourier ptychography. The experiments validate the technique's state-of-the-art super-resolution SPAD imaging performance, with more than 5 dB superiority on PSNR compared to the existing methods.

Prompt Tuning for CLIP on the Pretrained ManifoldXi Yang, Yuanrong Xu, Weigang Zhang et al.
Prompt tuning introduces learnable prompt vectors that adapt pretrained vision-language models to downstream tasks in a parameter-efficient manner. However, under limited supervision, prompt tuning alters pretrained representations and drives downstream features away from the pretrained manifold toward directions that are unfavorable for transfer. This drift degrades generalization. To address this limitation, we propose ManiPT, a framework that performs prompt tuning on the pretrained manifold. ManiPT introduces cosine consistency constraints in both the text and image modalities to confine the learned representations within the pretrained geometric neighborhood. Furthermore, we introduce a structural bias that enforces incremental corrections, guiding the adaptation along transferable directions to mitigate reliance on shortcut learning. From a theoretical perspective, ManiPT alleviates overfitting tendencies under limited data. Our experiments cover four downstream settings: unseen-class generalization, few-shot classification, cross-dataset transfer, and domain generalization. Across these settings, ManiPT achieves higher average performance than baseline methods. Notably, ManiPT provides an explicit perspective on how prompt tuning overfits under limited supervision.

A Generalized Apprenticeship Learning Framework for Capturing Evolving Student Pedagogical StrategiesMd Mirajul Islam, Xi Yang, Adittya Soukarjya Saha et al.
Reinforcement Learning (RL) and Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) have advanced rapidly in recent years and have been successfully applied to e-learning environments like intelligent tutoring systems (ITSs). Despite great success, the broader application of DRL to educational technologies has been limited due to major challenges such as sample inefficiency and difficulty designing the reward function. In contrast, Apprenticeship Learning (AL) uses a few expert demonstrations to infer the expert's underlying reward functions and derive decision-making policies that generalize and replicate optimal behavior. In this work, we leverage a generalized AL framework, THEMES, to induce effective pedagogical policies by capturing the complexities of the expert student learning process, where multiple reward functions may dynamically evolve over time. We evaluate the effectiveness of THEMES against six state-of-the-art baselines, demonstrating its superior performance and highlighting its potential as a powerful alternative for inducing effective pedagogical policies and show that it can achieve high performance, with an AUC of 0.899 and a Jaccard of 0.653, using only 18 trajectories of a previous semester to predict student pedagogical decisions in a later semester.

ShiftedBronzes: Benchmarking and Analysis of Domain Fine-Grained Classification in Open-World SettingsRixin Zhou, Honglin Pang, Qian Zhang et al.
In real-world applications across specialized domains, addressing complex out-of-distribution (OOD) challenges is a common and significant concern. In this study, we concentrate on the task of fine-grained bronze ware dating, a critical aspect in the study of ancient Chinese history, and developed a benchmark dataset named ShiftedBronzes. By extensively expanding the bronze Ding dataset, ShiftedBronzes incorporates two types of bronze ware data and seven types of OOD data, which exhibit distribution shifts commonly encountered in bronze ware dating scenarios. We conduct benchmarking experiments on ShiftedBronzes and five commonly used general OOD datasets, employing a variety of widely adopted post-hoc, pre-trained Vision Large Model (VLM)-based and generation-based OOD detection methods. Through analysis of the experimental results, we validate previous conclusions regarding post-hoc, VLM-based, and generation-based methods, while also highlighting their distinct behaviors on specialized datasets. These findings underscore the unique challenges of applying general OOD detection methods to domain-specific tasks such as bronze ware dating. We hope that the ShiftedBronzes benchmark provides valuable insights into both the field of bronze ware dating and the and the development of OOD detection methods. The dataset and associated code will be available later.
