Florence-VL: Enhancing Vision-Language Models with Generative Vision Encoder and Depth-Breadth Fusion

Jiuhai Chen, Jianwei Yang, Haiping Wu et al.

We present Florence-VL, a new family of multimodal large language models (MLLMs) with enriched visual representations produced by Florence-2, a generative vision foundation model. Unlike the widely used CLIP-style vision transformer trained by contrastive learning, Florence-2 can capture different levels and aspects of visual features, which are more versatile to be adapted to diverse downstream tasks. We propose a novel feature-fusion architecture and an innovative training recipe that effectively integrates Florence-2's visual features into pretrained LLMs, such as Phi 3.5 and LLama 3. In particular, we propose "depth-breath fusion (DBFusion)" to fuse the visual features extracted from different depths and under multiple prompts. Our model training is composed of end-to-end pretraining of the whole model followed by finetuning of the projection layer and the LLM, on a carefully designed recipe of diverse open-source datasets that include high-quality image captions and instruction-tuning pairs. Our quantitative analysis and visualization of Florence-VL's visual features show its advantages over popular vision encoders on vision-language alignment, where the enriched depth and breath play important roles. Florence-VL achieves significant improvements over existing state-of-the-art MLLMs across various multi-modal and vision-centric benchmarks covering general VQA, perception, hallucination, OCR, Chart, knowledge-intensive understanding, etc. To facilitate future research, our models and the complete training recipe are open-sourced. https://github.com/JiuhaiChen/Florence-VL

Table Detection for Visually Rich Document Images

Bin Xiao, Murat Simsek, Burak Kantarci et al.

Table Detection (TD) is a fundamental task to enable visually rich document understanding, which requires the model to extract information without information loss. However, popular Intersection over Union (IoU) based evaluation metrics and IoU-based loss functions for the detection models cannot directly represent the degree of information loss for the prediction results. Therefore, we propose to decouple IoU into a ground truth coverage term and a prediction coverage term, in which the former can be used to measure the information loss of the prediction results. Besides, considering the sparse distribution of tables in document images, we use SparseR-CNN as the base model and further improve the model by using Gaussian Noise Augmented Image Size region proposals and many-to-one label assignments. Results under comprehensive experiments show that the proposed method can consistently outperform state-of-the-art methods with different IoU-based metrics under various datasets and demonstrate that the proposed decoupled IoU loss can enable the model to alleviate information loss.

Proxy Network for Few Shot Learning

Bin Xiao, Chien-Liang Liu, Wen-Hoar Hsaio

The use of a few examples for each class to train a predictive model that can be generalized to novel classes is a crucial and valuable research direction in artificial intelligence. This work addresses this problem by proposing a few-shot learning (FSL) algorithm called proxy network under the architecture of meta-learning. Metric-learning based approaches assume that the data points within the same class should be close, whereas the data points in the different classes should be separated as far as possible in the embedding space. We conclude that the success of metric-learning based approaches lies in the data embedding, the representative of each class, and the distance metric. In this work, we propose a simple but effective end-to-end model that directly learns proxies for class representative and distance metric from data simultaneously. We conduct experiments on CUB and mini-ImageNet datasets in 1-shot-5-way and 5-shot-5-way scenarios, and the experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed method over state-of-the-art methods. Besides, we provide a detailed analysis of our proposed method.
