Viewport Prediction for Volumetric Video Streaming by Exploring Video Saliency and Trajectory InformationJie Li, Zhixin Li, Zhi Liu et al.
Volumetric video, also known as hologram video, is a novel medium that portrays natural content in Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR). It is expected to be the next-gen video technology and a prevalent use case for 5G and beyond wireless communication. Considering that each user typically only watches a section of the volumetric video, known as the viewport, it is essential to have precise viewport prediction for optimal performance. However, research on this topic is still in its infancy. In the end, this paper presents and proposes a novel approach, named Saliency and Trajectory Viewport Prediction (STVP), which aims to improve the precision of viewport prediction in volumetric video streaming. The STVP extensively utilizes video saliency information and viewport trajectory. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study of viewport prediction in volumetric video streaming. In particular, we introduce a novel sampling method, Uniform Random Sampling (URS), to reduce computational complexity while still preserving video features in an efficient manner. Then we present a saliency detection technique that incorporates both spatial and temporal information for detecting static, dynamic geometric, and color salient regions. Finally, we intelligently fuse saliency and trajectory information to achieve more accurate viewport prediction. We conduct extensive simulations to evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed viewport prediction methods using state-of-the-art volumetric video sequences. The experimental results show the superiority of the proposed method over existing schemes. The dataset and source code will be publicly accessible after acceptance.

Temporal action segmentation is crucial for understanding long-form videos. Previous works on this task commonly adopt an iterative refinement paradigm by using multi-stage models. We propose a novel framework via denoising diffusion models, which nonetheless shares the same inherent spirit of such iterative refinement. In this framework, action predictions are iteratively generated from random noise with input video features as conditions. To enhance the modeling of three striking characteristics of human actions, including the position prior, the boundary ambiguity, and the relational dependency, we devise a unified masking strategy for the conditioning inputs in our framework. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets, i.e., GTEA, 50Salads, and Breakfast, are performed and the proposed method achieves superior or comparable results to state-of-the-art methods, showing the effectiveness of a generative approach for action segmentation.

CoCoDA: Co-evolving Compositional DAG for Tool-Augmented AgentsZiyang Yu, Qiyue Li, Liang Zhao
Tool-augmented language models can extend small language models with external executable skills, but scaling the tool library creates a coupled challenge: the library must evolve with the planner as new reusable subroutines emerge, while retrieval from the growing library must remain within a fixed context budget. Existing tool-use and skill-library methods typically treat tools as flat or text-indexed memories, causing prompt cost to grow with library size and obscuring the typed, compositional structure of executable code. We propose CoCoDA, a framework that co-evolves the planner and tool library through a single code-native structure: a compositional code DAG. Nodes are primitive or composite tools, edges encode invocation dependencies, and each node stores a typed signature, description, pre/post-condition specification, and worked examples. At inference time, Typed DAG Retrieval prunes candidates by symbolic signature unification, ranks survivors by descriptions, filters them by behavioral specifications, and disambiguates with examples, keeping expensive context materialization on progressively smaller candidate sets. At training time, successful trajectories are folded into validated composite tools, while the planner is updated with a DAG-induced reward that credits composites by their primitive expansion size. We provide theoretical results showing retrieval cost reduction, sublinear retrieval time, compositional advantage under the shaped reward, monotone co-evolution under conservative updates, and DAG well-formedness. Across mathematical reasoning, tabular analysis, and code task benchmarks, CoCoDA enables an 8B student to match or exceed a 32B teacher on GSM8K and MATH and consistently improves over strong tool-use and library-learning baselines.

Adaptive 3D Gaussian Splatting Video Streaming: Visual Saliency-Aware Tiling and Meta-Learning-Based Bitrate AdaptationHan Gong, Qiyue Li, Jie Li et al.
3D Gaussian splatting video (3DGS) streaming has recently emerged as a research hotspot in both academia and industry, owing to its impressive ability to deliver immersive 3D video experiences. However, research in this area is still in its early stages, and several fundamental challenges, such as tiling, quality assessment, and bitrate adaptation, require further investigation. In this paper, we tackle these challenges by proposing a comprehensive set of solutions. Specifically, we propose an adaptive 3DGS tiling technique guided by saliency analysis, which integrates both spatial and temporal features. Each tile is encoded into versions possessing dedicated deformation fields and multiple quality levels for adaptive selection. We also introduce a novel quality assessment framework for 3DGS video that jointly evaluates spatial-domain degradation in 3DGS representations during streaming and the quality of the resulting 2D rendered images. Additionally, we develop a meta-learning-based adaptive bitrate algorithm specifically tailored for 3DGS video streaming, achieving optimal performance across varying network conditions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed approaches significantly outperform state-of-the-art methods.

Adaptive 3D Gaussian Splatting Video StreamingHan Gong, Qiyue Li, Zhi Liu et al.
The advent of 3D Gaussian splatting (3DGS) has significantly enhanced the quality of volumetric video representation. Meanwhile, in contrast to conventional volumetric video, 3DGS video poses significant challenges for streaming due to its substantially larger data volume and the heightened complexity involved in compression and transmission. To address these issues, we introduce an innovative framework for 3DGS volumetric video streaming. Specifically, we design a 3DGS video construction method based on the Gaussian deformation field. By employing hybrid saliency tiling and differentiated quality modeling of 3DGS video, we achieve efficient data compression and adaptation to bandwidth fluctuations while ensuring high transmission quality. Then we build a complete 3DGS video streaming system and validate the transmission performance. Through experimental evaluation, our method demonstrated superiority over existing approaches in various aspects, including video quality, compression effectiveness, and transmission rate.

Cluster-Based Client Selection for Dependent Multi-Task Federated Learning in Edge ComputingJieping Luo, Qiyue Li, Zhizhang Liu et al.
We study the client selection problem in Federated Learning (FL) within mobile edge computing (MEC) environments, particularly under the dependent multi-task settings, to reduce the total time required to complete various learning tasks. We propose CoDa-FL, a Cluster-oriented and Dependency-aware framework designed to reduce the total required time via cluster-based client selection and dependent task assignment. Our approach considers Earth Mover's Distance (EMD) for client clustering based on their local data distributions to lower computational cost and improve communication efficiency. We derive a direct and explicit relationship between intra-cluster EMD and the number of training rounds required for convergence, thereby simplifying the otherwise complex process of obtaining the optimal solution. Additionally, we incorporate a directed acyclic graph-based task scheduling mechanism to effectively manage task dependencies. Through numerical experiments, we validate that our proposed CoDa-FL outperforms existing benchmarks by achieving faster convergence, lower communication and computational costs, and higher learning accuracy under heterogeneous MEC settings.

Adaptive Client Selection via Q-Learning-based Whittle Index in Wireless Federated LearningQiyue Li, Yingxin Liu, Hang Qi et al.
We consider the client selection problem in wireless Federated Learning (FL), with the objective of reducing the total required time to achieve a certain level of learning accuracy. Since the server cannot observe the clients' dynamic states that can change their computation and communication efficiency, we formulate client selection as a restless multi-armed bandit problem. We propose a scalable and efficient approach called the Whittle Index Learning in Federated Q-learning (WILF-Q), which uses Q-learning to adaptively learn and update an approximated Whittle index associated with each client, and then selects the clients with the highest indices. Compared to existing approaches, WILF-Q does not require explicit knowledge of client state transitions or data distributions, making it well-suited for deployment in practical FL settings. Experiment results demonstrate that WILF-Q significantly outperforms existing baseline policies in terms of learning efficiency, providing a robust and efficient approach to client selection in wireless FL.

Spherical Convolution empowered FoV Prediction in 360-degree Video Multicast with Limited FoV FeedbackJie Li, Ling Han, Cong Zhang et al.
Field of view (FoV) prediction is critical in 360-degree video multicast, which is a key component of the emerging Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Most of the current prediction methods combining saliency detection and FoV information neither take into account that the distortion of projected 360-degree videos can invalidate the weight sharing of traditional convolutional networks, nor do they adequately consider the difficulty of obtaining complete multi-user FoV information, which degrades the prediction performance. This paper proposes a spherical convolution-empowered FoV prediction method, which is a multi-source prediction framework combining salient features extracted from 360-degree video with limited FoV feedback information. A spherical convolution neural network (CNN) is used instead of a traditional two-dimensional CNN to eliminate the problem of weight sharing failure caused by video projection distortion. Specifically, salient spatial-temporal features are extracted through a spherical convolution-based saliency detection model, after which the limited feedback FoV information is represented as a time-series model based on a spherical convolution-empowered gated recurrent unit network. Finally, the extracted salient video features are combined to predict future user FoVs. The experimental results show that the performance of the proposed method is better than other prediction methods.

A QoE Model in Point Cloud Video StreamingJie Li, Xiao Wang, Zhi Liu et al.
Point cloud video has been widely used by augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications as it allows users to have an immersive experience of six degrees of freedom (6DoFs). Yet there is still a lack of research on quality of experience (QoE) model of point cloud video streaming, which cannot provide optimization metric for streaming systems. Besides, position and color information contained in each pixel of point cloud video, and viewport distance effect caused by 6DoFs viewing procedure make the traditional objective quality evaluation metric cannot be directly used in point cloud video streaming system. In this paper we first analyze the subjective and objective factors related to QoE model. Then an experimental system to simulate point cloud video streaming is setup and detailed subjective quality evaluation experiments are carried out. Based on collected mean opinion score (MOS) data, we propose a QoE model for point cloud video streaming. We also verify the model by actual subjective scoring, and the results show that the proposed QoE model can accurately reflect users' visual perception. We also make the experimental database public to promote the QoE research of point cloud video streaming.

Towards Unified Surgical Skill AssessmentDaochang Liu, Qiyue Li, Tingting Jiang et al.
Surgical skills have a great influence on surgical safety and patients' well-being. Traditional assessment of surgical skills involves strenuous manual efforts, which lacks efficiency and repeatability. Therefore, we attempt to automatically predict how well the surgery is performed using the surgical video. In this paper, a unified multi-path framework for automatic surgical skill assessment is proposed, which takes care of multiple composing aspects of surgical skills, including surgical tool usage, intraoperative event pattern, and other skill proxies. The dependency relationships among these different aspects are specially modeled by a path dependency module in the framework. We conduct extensive experiments on the JIGSAWS dataset of simulated surgical tasks, and a new clinical dataset of real laparoscopic surgeries. The proposed framework achieves promising results on both datasets, with the state-of-the-art on the simulated dataset advanced from 0.71 Spearman's correlation to 0.80. It is also shown that combining multiple skill aspects yields better performance than relying on a single aspect.

QoE-driven Coupled Uplink and Downlink Rate Adaptation for 360-degree Video Live StreamingJie Li, Ransheng Feng, Zhi Liu et al.
360-degree video provides an immersive 360-degree viewing experience and has been widely used in many areas. The 360-degree video live streaming systems involve capturing, compression, uplink (camera to video server) and downlink (video server to user) transmissions. However, few studies have jointly investigated such complex systems, especially the rate adaptation for the coupled uplink and downlink in the 360-degree video streaming under limited bandwidth constraints. In this letter, we propose a quality of experience (QoE)-driven 360-degree video live streaming system, in which a video server performs rate adaptation based on the uplink and downlink bandwidths and information concerning each user's real-time field-of-view (FOV). We formulate it as a nonlinear integer programming problem and propose an algorithm, which combines the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) condition and branch and bound method, to solve it. The numerical results show that the proposed optimization model can improve users' QoE significantly in comparison with other baseline schemes.

Point cloud video is the most popular representation of hologram, which is the medium to precedent natural content in VR/AR/MR and is expected to be the next generation video. Point cloud video system provides users immersive viewing experience with six degrees of freedom and has wide applications in many fields such as online education, entertainment. To further enhance these applications, point cloud video streaming is in critical demand. The inherent challenges lie in the large size by the necessity of recording the three-dimensional coordinates besides color information, and the associated high computation complexity of encoding. To this end, this paper proposes a communication and computation resource allocation scheme for QoE-driven point cloud video streaming. In particular, we maximize system resource utilization by selecting different quantities, transmission forms and quality level tiles to maximize the quality of experience. Extensive simulations are conducted and the simulation results show the superior performance over the existing schemes
