HD-DinoMoE: A Class-Aware Hierarchical Dual Mixture-of-Experts Network for Scleral Anomaly Segmentation in Complex Acquisition ScenariosYinxiang Yu, Maoxiang Chu, Qi Niu et al.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) ocular inspection provides empirical cues for assessing scleral surface anomalies, but its clinical use remains subjective and difficult to quantify. To support intelligent and quantifiable ocular inspection, this study presents the TCM-inspired Artificial Intelligence Ocular Auxiliary Diagnosis System (TAO) and focuses on pixel-level scleral surface anomaly segmentation. For clinical and user-acquired images affected by multi-source distributional discrepancies, diverse anomaly morphologies, and scleral specular reflection (SSR), we propose HD-DinoMoE, a class-aware hierarchical dual mixture-of-experts network. HD-DinoMoE combines class-aware dual-stream DINOv3 feature fusion with class-specific multi-expert decoding to segment Vessels, Yellow and Black Spots, and Blood Spots. A three-stage backbone-frozen routing strategy stabilizes dual-backbone adaptation; Progressive Confidence Penalty (PCP) Loss reduces high-confidence false positives and segmentation leakage in SSR regions; and Class-Aware Adaptive Sample Weighting (CA-ASW) balances sample- and class-level training contributions. We further construct the Multi-label Scleral Anomaly Segmentation Dataset (ML-SASD), a new benchmark with Clinical, Wild, and Mix settings and pixel-wise annotations for three anomaly categories. On ML-SASD-Mix, HD-DinoMoE achieves a mean Dice of 72.11% and a mean Intersection-over-Union of 58.44%, while maintaining favorable boundary localization and specular-region false-positive control. It also shows competitive generalization on the Vessels subset of the public SBVPI dataset. These results indicate that HD-DinoMoE provides a feasible segmentation solution for TAO under complex acquisition scenarios. PaCo: Parameter-Compositional Multi-Task Reinforcement LearningLingfeng Sun, Haichao Zhang, Wei Xu et al. · berkeley
The purpose of multi-task reinforcement learning (MTRL) is to train a single policy that can be applied to a set of different tasks. Sharing parameters allows us to take advantage of the similarities among tasks. However, the gaps between contents and difficulties of different tasks bring us challenges on both which tasks should share the parameters and what parameters should be shared, as well as the optimization challenges due to parameter sharing. In this work, we introduce a parameter-compositional approach (PaCo) as an attempt to address these challenges. In this framework, a policy subspace represented by a set of parameters is learned. Policies for all the single tasks lie in this subspace and can be composed by interpolating with the learned set. It allows not only flexible parameter sharing but also a natural way to improve training. We demonstrate the state-of-the-art performance on Meta-World benchmarks, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In this work, we investigate the potential of improving multi-task training and also leveraging it for transferring in the reinforcement learning setting. We identify several challenges towards this goal and propose a transferring approach with a parameter-compositional formulation. We investigate ways to improve the training of multi-task reinforcement learning which serves as the foundation for transferring. Then we conduct a number of transferring experiments on various manipulation tasks. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach can have improved performance in the multi-task training stage, and further show effective transferring in terms of both sample efficiency and performance.

Seed1.5-Thinking: Advancing Superb Reasoning Models with Reinforcement LearningByteDance Seed, Jiaze Chen, Tiantian Fan et al. · bytedance
We introduce Seed1.5-Thinking, capable of reasoning through thinking before responding, resulting in improved performance on a wide range of benchmarks. Seed1.5-Thinking achieves 86.7 on AIME 2024, 55.0 on Codeforces and 77.3 on GPQA, demonstrating excellent reasoning abilities in STEM and coding. Beyond reasoning tasks, the method demonstrates notable generalization across diverse domains. For instance, it surpasses DeepSeek R1 by 8% in win rate on non-reasoning tasks, indicating its broader applicability. Compared to other state-of-the-art reasoning models, Seed1.5-Thinking is a Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) model with a relatively small size, featuring 20B activated and 200B total parameters. As part of our effort to assess generalized reasoning, we develop two internal benchmarks, BeyondAIME and Codeforces, both of which will be publicly released to support future research. CrowdCLIP: Unsupervised Crowd Counting via Vision-Language ModelDingkang Liang, Jiahao Xie, Zhikang Zou et al.
Supervised crowd counting relies heavily on costly manual labeling, which is difficult and expensive, especially in dense scenes. To alleviate the problem, we propose a novel unsupervised framework for crowd counting, named CrowdCLIP. The core idea is built on two observations: 1) the recent contrastive pre-trained vision-language model (CLIP) has presented impressive performance on various downstream tasks; 2) there is a natural mapping between crowd patches and count text. To the best of our knowledge, CrowdCLIP is the first to investigate the vision language knowledge to solve the counting problem. Specifically, in the training stage, we exploit the multi-modal ranking loss by constructing ranking text prompts to match the size-sorted crowd patches to guide the image encoder learning. In the testing stage, to deal with the diversity of image patches, we propose a simple yet effective progressive filtering strategy to first select the highly potential crowd patches and then map them into the language space with various counting intervals. Extensive experiments on five challenging datasets demonstrate that the proposed CrowdCLIP achieves superior performance compared to previous unsupervised state-of-the-art counting methods. FAST-LIVO2: Fast, Direct LiDAR-Inertial-Visual OdometryChunran Zheng, Wei Xu, Zuhao Zou et al.
This paper proposes FAST-LIVO2: a fast, direct LiDAR-inertial-visual odometry framework to achieve accurate and robust state estimation in SLAM tasks and provide great potential in real-time, onboard robotic applications. FAST-LIVO2 fuses the IMU, LiDAR and image measurements efficiently through an ESIKF. To address the dimension mismatch between the heterogeneous LiDAR and image measurements, we use a sequential update strategy in the Kalman filter. To enhance the efficiency, we use direct methods for both the visual and LiDAR fusion, where the LiDAR module registers raw points without extracting edge or plane features and the visual module minimizes direct photometric errors without extracting ORB or FAST corner features. The fusion of both visual and LiDAR measurements is based on a single unified voxel map where the LiDAR module constructs the geometric structure for registering new LiDAR scans and the visual module attaches image patches to the LiDAR points. To enhance the accuracy of image alignment, we use plane priors from the LiDAR points in the voxel map (and even refine the plane prior) and update the reference patch dynamically after new images are aligned. Furthermore, to enhance the robustness of image alignment, FAST-LIVO2 employs an on-demanding raycast operation and estimates the image exposure time in real time. Lastly, we detail three applications of FAST-LIVO2: UAV onboard navigation demonstrating the system's computation efficiency for real-time onboard navigation, airborne mapping showcasing the system's mapping accuracy, and 3D model rendering (mesh-based and NeRF-based) underscoring the suitability of our reconstructed dense map for subsequent rendering tasks. We open source our code, dataset and application on GitHub to benefit the robotics community.

We present a non-learning stereo framework for disparity estimation from severely noisy images. Using the Field of Junctions (FoJ), it retains coarse visual features stable under severe noise for cost volume construction while discarding fine textures inseparable from photon noise. The resulting structural information guides boundary-aware Semi-Global Matching (SGM) that dynamically adapts smoothness penalties to preserve true disparity discontinuities. The output is a sparse disparity map more accurate than those of recent stereo algorithms over unmasked pixels on widely-used benchmark datasets.

Walking in Others' Shoes: How Perspective-Taking Guides Large Language Models in Reducing Toxicity and BiasRongwu Xu, Zi'an Zhou, Tianwei Zhang et al. · uw
The common toxicity and societal bias in contents generated by large language models (LLMs) necessitate strategies to reduce harm. Present solutions often demand white-box access to the model or substantial training, which is impractical for cutting-edge commercial LLMs. Moreover, prevailing prompting methods depend on external tool feedback and fail to simultaneously lessen toxicity and bias. Motivated by social psychology principles, we propose a novel strategy named \textbf{perspective-taking prompting (\textsc{PeT})} that inspires LLMs to integrate diverse human perspectives and self-regulate their responses. This self-correction mechanism can significantly diminish toxicity (up to $89\%$) and bias (up to $73\%$) in LLMs' responses. Rigorous evaluations and ablation studies are conducted on two commercial LLMs (ChatGPT and GLM) and three open-source LLMs, revealing \textsc{PeT}'s superiority in producing less harmful responses, outperforming five strong baselines.

LENS: A Learnable Evaluation Metric for Text SimplificationMounica Maddela, Yao Dou, David Heineman et al. · gatech
Training learnable metrics using modern language models has recently emerged as a promising method for the automatic evaluation of machine translation. However, existing human evaluation datasets for text simplification have limited annotations that are based on unitary or outdated models, making them unsuitable for this approach. To address these issues, we introduce the SimpEval corpus that contains: SimpEval_past, comprising 12K human ratings on 2.4K simplifications of 24 past systems, and SimpEval_2022, a challenging simplification benchmark consisting of over 1K human ratings of 360 simplifications including GPT-3.5 generated text. Training on SimpEval, we present LENS, a Learnable Evaluation Metric for Text Simplification. Extensive empirical results show that LENS correlates much better with human judgment than existing metrics, paving the way for future progress in the evaluation of text simplification. We also introduce Rank and Rate, a human evaluation framework that rates simplifications from several models in a list-wise manner using an interactive interface, which ensures both consistency and accuracy in the evaluation process and is used to create the SimpEval datasets.

Frustratingly Easy Label Projection for Cross-lingual TransferYang Chen, Chao Jiang, Alan Ritter et al. · gatech
Translating training data into many languages has emerged as a practical solution for improving cross-lingual transfer. For tasks that involve span-level annotations, such as information extraction or question answering, an additional label projection step is required to map annotated spans onto the translated texts. Recently, a few efforts have utilized a simple mark-then-translate method to jointly perform translation and projection by inserting special markers around the labeled spans in the original sentence. However, as far as we are aware, no empirical analysis has been conducted on how this approach compares to traditional annotation projection based on word alignment. In this paper, we present an extensive empirical study across 57 languages and three tasks (QA, NER, and Event Extraction) to evaluate the effectiveness and limitations of both methods, filling an important gap in the literature. Experimental results show that our optimized version of mark-then-translate, which we call EasyProject, is easily applied to many languages and works surprisingly well, outperforming the more complex word alignment-based methods. We analyze several key factors that affect the end-task performance, and show EasyProject works well because it can accurately preserve label span boundaries after translation. Localizing Prompt Ambiguity in Large Language Models with Probe-Targeted AttributionGovind Ramesh, Yao Dou, Wei Xu
Prompt ambiguity is a common source of failure in large language models, but is difficult to localize because it is a latent property of the prompt, while existing attribution methods are designed to explain observable outputs such as logits or generated tokens. We introduce PRIG, a gradient attribution method that uses a probe logit to attribute latent ambiguity to token positions. Specifically, PRIG trains a linear probe to distinguish clear prompts from ambiguous prompts and attributes the probe score to earlier token representations in the residual stream. To enable token-level evaluation, we construct synthetic ambiguity datasets across coding, math, and writing by rewriting one task-critical sentence per prompt, and complement them with a human-written gold benchmark. In this setting, PRIG localizes ambiguous spans substantially better than gradient attribution baselines, achieving 0.840 AUROC on the combined synthetic benchmark and 0.891 AUROC on the gold set. It also outperforms GPT-5.4 on sentence-level ambiguity identification and retains useful signal out-of-domain. These results establish PRIG as a practical tool for identifying which parts of a prompt are ambiguous. More broadly, they suggest that latent prompt properties can be localized through intermediate representations, rather than through output-level attribution.

arXivEdits: Understanding the Human Revision Process in Scientific WritingChao Jiang, Wei Xu, Samuel Stevens · gatech
Scientific publications are the primary means to communicate research discoveries, where the writing quality is of crucial importance. However, prior work studying the human editing process in this domain mainly focused on the abstract or introduction sections, resulting in an incomplete picture. In this work, we provide a complete computational framework for studying text revision in scientific writing. We first introduce arXivEdits, a new annotated corpus of 751 full papers from arXiv with gold sentence alignment across their multiple versions of revision, as well as fine-grained span-level edits and their underlying intentions for 1,000 sentence pairs. It supports our data-driven analysis to unveil the common strategies practiced by researchers for revising their papers. To scale up the analysis, we also develop automatic methods to extract revision at document-, sentence-, and word-levels. A neural CRF sentence alignment model trained on our corpus achieves 93.8 F1, enabling the reliable matching of sentences between different versions. We formulate the edit extraction task as a span alignment problem, and our proposed method extracts more fine-grained and explainable edits, compared to the commonly used diff algorithm. An intention classifier trained on our dataset achieves 78.9 F1 on the fine-grained intent classification task. Our data and system are released at tiny.one/arxivedits.

Reducing Privacy Risks in Online Self-Disclosures with Language ModelsYao Dou, Isadora Krsek, Tarek Naous et al. · cmu
Self-disclosure, while being common and rewarding in social media interaction, also poses privacy risks. In this paper, we take the initiative to protect the user-side privacy associated with online self-disclosure through detection and abstraction. We develop a taxonomy of 19 self-disclosure categories and curate a large corpus consisting of 4.8K annotated disclosure spans. We then fine-tune a language model for detection, achieving over 65% partial span F$_1$. We further conduct an HCI user study, with 82% of participants viewing the model positively, highlighting its real-world applicability. Motivated by the user feedback, we introduce the task of self-disclosure abstraction, which is rephrasing disclosures into less specific terms while preserving their utility, e.g., "Im 16F" to "I'm a teenage girl". We explore various fine-tuning strategies, and our best model can generate diverse abstractions that moderately reduce privacy risks while maintaining high utility according to human evaluation. To help users in deciding which disclosures to abstract, we present a task of rating their importance for context understanding. Our fine-tuned model achieves 80% accuracy, on-par with GPT-3.5. Given safety and privacy considerations, we will only release our corpus and models to researcher who agree to the ethical guidelines outlined in Ethics Statement.

Human-in-the-loop Evaluation for Early Misinformation Detection: A Case Study of COVID-19 TreatmentsEthan Mendes, Yang Chen, Wei Xu et al. · gatech
We present a human-in-the-loop evaluation framework for fact-checking novel misinformation claims and identifying social media messages that support them. Our approach extracts check-worthy claims, which are aggregated and ranked for review. Stance classifiers are then used to identify tweets supporting novel misinformation claims, which are further reviewed to determine whether they violate relevant policies. To demonstrate the feasibility of our approach, we develop a baseline system based on modern NLP methods for human-in-the-loop fact-checking in the domain of COVID-19 treatments. We make our data and detailed annotation guidelines available to support the evaluation of human-in-the-loop systems that identify novel misinformation directly from raw user-generated content.

Disentangled Representation Learning for RF Fingerprint Extraction under Unknown Channel StatisticsRenjie Xie, Wei Xu, Jiabao Yu et al.
Deep learning (DL) applied to a device's radio-frequency fingerprint~(RFF) has attracted significant attention in physical-layer authentication due to its extraordinary classification performance. Conventional DL-RFF techniques are trained by adopting maximum likelihood estimation~(MLE). Although their discriminability has recently been extended to unknown devices in open-set scenarios, they still tend to overfit the channel statistics embedded in the training dataset. This restricts their practical applications as it is challenging to collect sufficient training data capturing the characteristics of all possible wireless channel environments. To address this challenge, we propose a DL framework of disentangled representation~(DR) learning that first learns to factor the signals into a device-relevant component and a device-irrelevant component via adversarial learning. Then, it shuffles these two parts within a dataset for implicit data augmentation, which imposes a strong regularization on RFF extractor learning to avoid the possible overfitting of device-irrelevant channel statistics, without collecting additional data from unknown channels. Experiments validate that the proposed approach, referred to as DR-based RFF, outperforms conventional methods in terms of generalizability to unknown devices even under unknown complicated propagation environments, e.g., dispersive multipath fading channels, even though all the training data are collected in a simple environment with dominated direct line-of-sight~(LoS) propagation paths.

A Unified Framework for 3D Scene UnderstandingWei Xu, Chunsheng Shi, Sifan Tu et al.
We propose UniSeg3D, a unified 3D scene understanding framework that achieves panoptic, semantic, instance, interactive, referring, and open-vocabulary segmentation tasks within a single model. Most previous 3D segmentation approaches are typically tailored to a specific task, limiting their understanding of 3D scenes to a task-specific perspective. In contrast, the proposed method unifies six tasks into unified representations processed by the same Transformer. It facilitates inter-task knowledge sharing, thereby promoting comprehensive 3D scene understanding. To take advantage of multi-task unification, we enhance performance by establishing explicit inter-task associations. Specifically, we design knowledge distillation and contrastive learning methods to transfer task-specific knowledge across different tasks. Experiments on three benchmarks, including ScanNet20, ScanRefer, and ScanNet200, demonstrate that the UniSeg3D consistently outperforms current SOTA methods, even those specialized for individual tasks. Super-Resolution Information Enhancement For Crowd CountingJiahao Xie, Wei Xu, Dingkang Liang et al.
Crowd counting is a challenging task due to the heavy occlusions, scales, and density variations. Existing methods handle these challenges effectively while ignoring low-resolution (LR) circumstances. The LR circumstances weaken the counting performance deeply for two crucial reasons: 1) limited detail information; 2) overlapping head regions accumulate in density maps and result in extreme ground-truth values. An intuitive solution is to employ super-resolution (SR) pre-processes for the input LR images. However, it complicates the inference steps and thus limits application potentials when requiring real-time. We propose a more elegant method termed Multi-Scale Super-Resolution Module (MSSRM). It guides the network to estimate the lost de tails and enhances the detailed information in the feature space. Noteworthy that the MSSRM is plug-in plug-out and deals with the LR problems with no inference cost. As the proposed method requires SR labels, we further propose a Super-Resolution Crowd Counting dataset (SR-Crowd). Extensive experiments on three datasets demonstrate the superiority of our method. Improving Large-scale Paraphrase Acquisition and GenerationYao Dou, Chao Jiang, Wei Xu · gatech
This paper addresses the quality issues in existing Twitter-based paraphrase datasets, and discusses the necessity of using two separate definitions of paraphrase for identification and generation tasks. We present a new Multi-Topic Paraphrase in Twitter (MultiPIT) corpus that consists of a total of 130k sentence pairs with crowdsoursing (MultiPIT_crowd) and expert (MultiPIT_expert) annotations using two different paraphrase definitions for paraphrase identification, in addition to a multi-reference test set (MultiPIT_NMR) and a large automatically constructed training set (MultiPIT_Auto) for paraphrase generation. With improved data annotation quality and task-specific paraphrase definition, the best pre-trained language model fine-tuned on our dataset achieves the state-of-the-art performance of 84.2 F1 for automatic paraphrase identification. Furthermore, our empirical results also demonstrate that the paraphrase generation models trained on MultiPIT_Auto generate more diverse and high-quality paraphrases compared to their counterparts fine-tuned on other corpora such as Quora, MSCOCO, and ParaNMT.

Learning to Route Languages for Multilingual Policy OptimizationGeyang Guo, Hiromi Wakaki, Yuki Mitsufuji et al.
Large language models~(LLMs) are trained on heterogeneous multilingual corpora, yet existing policy optimization methods often implicitly restrict each training question to a single response language or rely on a fixed dominant language for supervision. We propose language-routed policy optimization (LRPO), an online policy optimization framework that treats language as a selectable variable. LRPO elicits multilingual rollouts for each training question and integrates their relative quality into preference-based policy updates, increasing the diversity and informativeness of training signals under the fixed rollout budget. To adaptively determine which languages to explore during reinforcement learning, we introduce a trainable language router formulated as a multi-armed bandit, balancing exploration of underutilized languages with exploitation of more informative ones. Extensive experiments show that LRPO consistently improves multilingual performance, demonstrating that adaptive language routing enables effective cross-lingual knowledge exploitation for training. From Supervised to Generative: A Novel Paradigm for Tabular Deep Learning with Large Language ModelsXumeng Wen, Han Zhang, Shun Zheng et al.
Tabular data is foundational to predictive modeling in various crucial industries, including healthcare, finance, retail, sustainability, etc. Despite the progress made in specialized models, there is an increasing demand for universal models that can transfer knowledge, generalize from limited data, and follow human instructions. These are challenges that current tabular deep learning approaches have not fully tackled. Here we introduce Generative Tabular Learning (GTL), a novel framework that integrates the advanced functionalities of large language models (LLMs)-such as prompt-based zero-shot generalization and in-context learning-into tabular deep learning. GTL capitalizes on the pre-training of LLMs on diverse tabular data, enhancing their understanding of domain-specific knowledge, numerical sequences, and statistical dependencies critical for accurate predictions. Our empirical study spans 384 public datasets, rigorously analyzing GTL's convergence and scaling behaviors and assessing the impact of varied data templates. The GTL-enhanced LLaMA-2 model demonstrates superior zero-shot and in-context learning capabilities across numerous classification and regression tasks. Notably, it achieves this without fine-tuning, outperforming traditional methods and rivaling state-of-the-art models like GPT-4 in certain cases. Through GTL, we not only foster a deeper integration of LLMs' sophisticated abilities into tabular data comprehension and application but also offer a new training resource and a test bed for LLMs to enhance their ability to comprehend tabular data. Thresh: A Unified, Customizable and Deployable Platform for Fine-Grained Text EvaluationDavid Heineman, Yao Dou, Wei Xu · gatech
Fine-grained, span-level human evaluation has emerged as a reliable and robust method for evaluating text generation tasks such as summarization, simplification, machine translation and news generation, and the derived annotations have been useful for training automatic metrics and improving language models. However, existing annotation tools implemented for these evaluation frameworks lack the adaptability to be extended to different domains or languages, or modify annotation settings according to user needs; and, the absence of a unified annotated data format inhibits the research in multi-task learning. In this paper, we introduce Thresh, a unified, customizable and deployable platform for fine-grained evaluation. With a single YAML configuration file, users can build and test an annotation interface for any framework within minutes -- all in one web browser window. To facilitate collaboration and sharing, Thresh provides a community hub that hosts a collection of fine-grained frameworks and corresponding annotations made and collected by the community, covering a wide range of NLP tasks. For deployment, Thresh offers multiple options for any scale of annotation projects from small manual inspections to large crowdsourcing ones. Additionally, we introduce a Python library to streamline the entire process from typology design and deployment to annotation processing. Thresh is publicly accessible at https://thresh.tools.

Solving Motion Planning Tasks with a Scalable Generative ModelYihan Hu, Siqi Chai, Zhening Yang et al.
As autonomous driving systems being deployed to millions of vehicles, there is a pressing need of improving the system's scalability, safety and reducing the engineering cost. A realistic, scalable, and practical simulator of the driving world is highly desired. In this paper, we present an efficient solution based on generative models which learns the dynamics of the driving scenes. With this model, we can not only simulate the diverse futures of a given driving scenario but also generate a variety of driving scenarios conditioned on various prompts. Our innovative design allows the model to operate in both full-Autoregressive and partial-Autoregressive modes, significantly improving inference and training speed without sacrificing generative capability. This efficiency makes it ideal for being used as an online reactive environment for reinforcement learning, an evaluator for planning policies, and a high-fidelity simulator for testing. We evaluated our model against two real-world datasets: the Waymo motion dataset and the nuPlan dataset. On the simulation realism and scene generation benchmark, our model achieves the state-of-the-art performance. And in the planning benchmarks, our planner outperforms the prior arts. We conclude that the proposed generative model may serve as a foundation for a variety of motion planning tasks, including data generation, simulation, planning, and online training. Learning to Optimize Resource Assignment for Task Offloading in Mobile Edge ComputingYurong Qian, Jindan Xu, Shuhan Zhu et al.
In this paper, we consider a multiuser mobile edge computing (MEC) system, where a mixed-integer offloading strategy is used to assist the resource assignment for task offloading. Although the conventional branch and bound (BnB) approach can be applied to solve this problem, a huge burden of computational complexity arises which limits the application of BnB. To address this issue, we propose an intelligent BnB (IBnB) approach which applies deep learning (DL) to learn the pruning strategy of the BnB approach. By using this learning scheme, the structure of the BnB approach ensures near-optimal performance and meanwhile DL-based pruning strategy significantly reduces the complexity. Numerical results verify that the proposed IBnB approach achieves optimal performance with complexity reduced by over 80%.

In this tutorial, we focus on text-to-text generation, a class of natural language generation (NLG) tasks, that takes a piece of text as input and then generates a revision that is improved according to some specific criteria (e.g., readability or linguistic styles), while largely retaining the original meaning and the length of the text. This includes many useful applications, such as text simplification, paraphrase generation, style transfer, etc. In contrast to text summarization and open-ended text completion (e.g., story), the text-to-text generation tasks we discuss in this tutorial are more constrained in terms of semantic consistency and targeted language styles. This level of control makes these tasks ideal testbeds for studying the ability of models to generate text that is both semantically adequate and stylistically appropriate. Moreover, these tasks are interesting from a technical standpoint, as they require complex combinations of lexical and syntactical transformations, stylistic control, and adherence to factual knowledge, -- all at once. With a special focus on text simplification and revision, this tutorial aims to provide an overview of the state-of-the-art natural language generation research from four major aspects -- Data, Models, Human-AI Collaboration, and Evaluation -- and to discuss and showcase a few significant and recent advances: (1) the use of non-retrogressive approaches; (2) the shift from fine-tuning to prompting with large language models; (3) the development of new learnable metric and fine-grained human evaluation framework; (4) a growing body of studies and datasets on non-English languages; (5) the rise of HCI+NLP+Accessibility interdisciplinary research to create real-world writing assistant systems.

Imitation with Spatial-Temporal Heatmap: 2nd Place Solution for NuPlan ChallengeYihan Hu, Kun Li, Pingyuan Liang et al.
This paper presents our 2nd place solution for the NuPlan Challenge 2023. Autonomous driving in real-world scenarios is highly complex and uncertain. Achieving safe planning in the complex multimodal scenarios is a highly challenging task. Our approach, Imitation with Spatial-Temporal Heatmap, adopts the learning form of behavior cloning, innovatively predicts the future multimodal states with a heatmap representation, and uses trajectory refinement techniques to ensure final safety. The experiment shows that our method effectively balances the vehicle's progress and safety, generating safe and comfortable trajectories. In the NuPlan competition, we achieved the second highest overall score, while obtained the best scores in the ego progress and comfort metrics.

Depth from Dual Differential Defocus and Stereo ConsensusJunjie Luo, Wei Xu, Dylan Chu et al.
We introduce D^3S Consensus, a physics-based, closed-form algorithm that unifies depth-from-defocus (DfD) and stereo to achieve highly accurate depth estimation throughout an extended working range beyond the depth-of-field (DoF) of cameras. Given a pair of dual-defocus stereo images, the method estimates an overdetermined set of depth using a novel DfD theory, Dual Differential Defocus (D^3), and (S)tereo in a coupled fashion. It then picks the most confident depth prediction from the set by enforcing consensus between these physically independent cues to reject unreliable estimates. Analysis shows that D^3S achieves a comparable working range under the same error tolerance with 10x smaller baseline than previous triangulation-based depth estimation systems. This enables compact passive binocular rangefinders with substantially smaller form factors than conventional stereo and DfD designs. We demonstrate the first D^3S prototype with only 4 mm baseline and 12 mm EFL. It generates up to 900 x 1800-pixel depth maps with 1-cm mean absolute error over 0.3-1.64 m from a snapshot acquisition. This has surpassed the reported accuracy of certain commercially available stereo cameras with much larger form factors.

Investigating and Alleviating Harm Amplification in LLM InteractionsRuohao Guo, Wei Xu, Alan Ritter
Large language models (LLMs) can serve as helpful assistants, yet they can equally function as harm amplifiers that enable malicious users to achieve harmful outcomes beyond their capabilities through extended interactions. This risk manifests along two axes, i.e., democratizing domain expertise that allows novices to produce specialized harmful content, and scaling harmful operations at volumes that manual effort cannot match. Existing works, however, often overlook how LLMs compound harm across multi-turn conversations. We introduce HarmAmp, a new benchmark for multi-turn harm amplification scenarios spanning twelve risk categories. Each scenario is grounded in real-world threats and satisfies rigorous criteria, i.e., substantive amplification, operational specificity, and multi-turn necessity. We further propose TrajSafe, a proactive monitor that anticipates harmful trajectories and intervenes through actions such as probing users' genuine intents and steering the models towards safer completion. Our extensive experiments demonstrate that TrajSafe significantly reduces the harmfulness incurred in multi-turn interactions while preserving a low over-refusal rate and the target model's general capabilities. Our work offers a promising paradigm to alleviate the nuanced safety risks in LLM interactions.

Scaling LLM Inference Beyond Amdahl`s Limits via Eliminating Non-Scalable OverheadsAlan Zhao, Cyril Y. He, Wei Xu
Deployers of online LLM services usually seek to maximize cluster-wide performance given a fixed number of GPUs. Tensor parallelism (TP) is necessary to fit modern models but scales sub-linearly as the TP degree t grows, due to cross-GPU communication and non-scalable runtime work, as predicted by Amdahl's Law. Conversely, increasing t improves memory efficiency and alleviates KV-cache contention and swapping. We identify and validate an empirical optimal TP degree t_e that balances these effects. We present Albireo, a parallel inference system that raises the attainable t_e by shrinking the non-scalable portion via overlap of scheduling and I/O with compute and sequence-parallel sampling, without changing model architectures. Across models and benchmarks, Albireo achieves up to 1.9x higher throughput, 48% lower latency, 28% higher GPU utilization, and 54% lower energy than vLLM; in production it yields up to 2x higher throughput.

DebateQA: Evaluating Question Answering on Debatable KnowledgeRongwu Xu, Xuan Qi, Zehan Qi et al. · uw
The rise of large language models (LLMs) has enabled us to seek answers to inherently debatable questions on LLM chatbots, necessitating a reliable way to evaluate their ability. However, traditional QA benchmarks assume fixed answers are inadequate for this purpose. To address this, we introduce DebateQA, a dataset of 2,941 debatable questions, each accompanied by multiple human-annotated partial answers that capture a variety of perspectives. We develop two metrics: Perspective Diversity, which evaluates the comprehensiveness of perspectives, and Dispute Awareness, which assesses if the LLM acknowledges the question's debatable nature. Experiments demonstrate that both metrics align with human preferences and are stable across different underlying models. Using DebateQA with two metrics, we assess 12 popular LLMs and retrieval-augmented generation methods. Our findings reveal that while LLMs generally excel at recognizing debatable issues, their ability to provide comprehensive answers encompassing diverse perspectives varies considerably.

HyperLens: Quantifying Cognitive Effort in LLMs with Fine-grained Confidence TrajectoryChengda Lu, Xiaoyu Fan, Wei Xu · deepmind
While Large Language Models (LLMs) achieve strong performance across diverse tasks, their inference dynamics remain poorly understood because of the limited resolution of existing analysis tools. In this work, we identify an intrinsic magnification mechanism in transformer architectures: deeper layers inherently magnify the small changes of layer-wise confidence, providing a fine-grained confidence trajectory. Building on this insight, we introduce HyperLens, a high-resolution probe designed to trace confidence trajectories and quantify the cognitive effort during inference. Across LLMs and datasets, HyperLens reveals a consistent divergence in confidence trajectories that separates complex from simple tasks. We abstract this pattern into a quantitative cognitive effort metric. Our analysis reveals a fundamental principle: complex tasks consistently require higher cognitive effort. Finally, we provide a mechanistic diagnosis of a common side effect of standard Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT): it can reduce cognitive effort and consequently degrade performance on in-domain tasks.

Full Attitude Control of an Efficient Quadrotor Tail-sitter VTOL UAV with Flexible ModesWei Xu, Haowei Gu, Youming Qing et al.
In this paper, we present a full attitude control of an efficient quadrotor tail-sitter VTOL UAV with flexible modes. This control system is working in all flight modes without any control surfaces but motor differential thrusts. This paper concentrates on the design of the attitude controller and the altitude controller. For the attitude control, the controller's parameters and filters are optimized based on the frequency response model which is identified from the sweep experiment. As a result, the effect of system flexible modes is easily compensated in frequency-domain by using a notch filter, and the resulting attitude loop shows superior tracking performance and robustness. In the coordinated flight condition, the altitude controller is structured as the feedforward-feedback parallel controller. The feedforward thrust command is calculated based on the current speed and the pitch angle. Tests in hovering, forward accelerating and forward decelerating flights have been conducted to verify the proposed control system.

Granular Privacy Control for Geolocation with Vision Language ModelsEthan Mendes, Yang Chen, James Hays et al.
Vision Language Models (VLMs) are rapidly advancing in their capability to answer information-seeking questions. As these models are widely deployed in consumer applications, they could lead to new privacy risks due to emergent abilities to identify people in photos, geolocate images, etc. As we demonstrate, somewhat surprisingly, current open-source and proprietary VLMs are very capable image geolocators, making widespread geolocation with VLMs an immediate privacy risk, rather than merely a theoretical future concern. As a first step to address this challenge, we develop a new benchmark, GPTGeoChat, to test the ability of VLMs to moderate geolocation dialogues with users. We collect a set of 1,000 image geolocation conversations between in-house annotators and GPT-4v, which are annotated with the granularity of location information revealed at each turn. Using this new dataset, we evaluate the ability of various VLMs to moderate GPT-4v geolocation conversations by determining when too much location information has been revealed. We find that custom fine-tuned models perform on par with prompted API-based models when identifying leaked location information at the country or city level; however, fine-tuning on supervised data appears to be needed to accurately moderate finer granularities, such as the name of a restaurant or building.

NAUTILUS: A Large Multimodal Model for Underwater Scene UnderstandingWei Xu, Cheng Wang, Dingkang Liang et al.
Underwater exploration offers critical insights into our planet and attracts increasing attention for its broader applications in resource exploration, national security, etc. We study the underwater scene understanding methods, which aim to achieve automated underwater exploration. The underwater scene understanding task demands multi-task perceptions from multiple granularities. However, the absence of large-scale underwater multi-task instruction-tuning datasets hinders the progress of this research. To bridge this gap, we construct NautData, a dataset containing 1.45 M image-text pairs supporting eight underwater scene understanding tasks. It enables the development and thorough evaluation of the underwater scene understanding models. Underwater image degradation is a widely recognized challenge that interferes with underwater tasks. To improve the robustness of underwater scene understanding, we introduce physical priors derived from underwater imaging models and propose a plug-and-play vision feature enhancement (VFE) module, which explicitly restores clear underwater information. We integrate this module into renowned baselines LLaVA-1.5 and Qwen2.5-VL and build our underwater LMM, NAUTILUS. Experiments conducted on the NautData and public underwater datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the VFE module, consistently improving the performance of both baselines on the majority of supported tasks, thus ensuring the superiority of NAUTILUS in the underwater scene understanding area. HMRNet: High and Multi-Resolution Network with Bidirectional Feature Calibration for Brain Structure Segmentation in RadiotherapyHao Fu, Guotai Wang, Wenhui Lei et al.
Accurate segmentation of Anatomical brain Barriers to Cancer spread (ABCs) plays an important role for automatic delineation of Clinical Target Volume (CTV) of brain tumors in radiotherapy. Despite that variants of U-Net are state-of-the-art segmentation models, they have limited performance when dealing with ABCs structures with various shapes and sizes, especially thin structures (e.g., the falx cerebri) that span only few slices. To deal with this problem, we propose a High and Multi-Resolution Network (HMRNet) that consists of a multi-scale feature learning branch and a high-resolution branch, which can maintain the high-resolution contextual information and extract more robust representations of anatomical structures with various scales. We further design a Bidirectional Feature Calibration (BFC) block to enable the two branches to generate spatial attention maps for mutual feature calibration. Considering the different sizes and positions of ABCs structures, our network was applied after a rough localization of each structure to obtain fine segmentation results. Experiments on the MICCAI 2020 ABCs challenge dataset showed that: 1) Our proposed two-stage segmentation strategy largely outperformed methods segmenting all the structures in just one stage; 2) The proposed HMRNet with two branches can maintain high-resolution representations and is effective to improve the performance on thin structures; 3) The proposed BFC block outperformed existing attention methods using monodirectional feature calibration. Our method won the second place of ABCs 2020 challenge and has a potential for more accurate and reasonable delineation of CTV of brain tumors.

Stanceosaurus: Classifying Stance Towards Multilingual MisinformationJonathan Zheng, Ashutosh Baheti, Tarek Naous et al.
We present Stanceosaurus, a new corpus of 28,033 tweets in English, Hindi, and Arabic annotated with stance towards 251 misinformation claims. As far as we are aware, it is the largest corpus annotated with stance towards misinformation claims. The claims in Stanceosaurus originate from 15 fact-checking sources that cover diverse geographical regions and cultures. Unlike existing stance datasets, we introduce a more fine-grained 5-class labeling strategy with additional subcategories to distinguish implicit stance. Pre-trained transformer-based stance classifiers that are fine-tuned on our corpus show good generalization on unseen claims and regional claims from countries outside the training data. Cross-lingual experiments demonstrate Stanceosaurus' capability of training multi-lingual models, achieving 53.1 F1 on Hindi and 50.4 F1 on Arabic without any target-language fine-tuning. Finally, we show how a domain adaptation method can be used to improve performance on Stanceosaurus using additional RumourEval-2019 data. We make Stanceosaurus publicly available to the research community and hope it will encourage further work on misinformation identification across languages and cultures.

Towards General Purpose Medical AI: Continual Learning Medical Foundation ModelHuahui Yi, Ziyuan Qin, Qicheng Lao et al.
Inevitable domain and task discrepancies in real-world scenarios can impair the generalization performance of the pre-trained deep models for medical data. Therefore, we audaciously propose that we should build a general-purpose medical AI system that can be seamlessly adapted to downstream domains/tasks. Since the domain/task adaption procedures usually involve additional labeling work for the target data, designing a data-efficient adaption algorithm is desired to save the cost of transferring the learned knowledge. Our recent work found that vision-language models (VLMs) are efficient learners with extraordinary cross-domain ability. Therefore, in this work, we further explore the possibility of leveraging pre-trained VLMs as medical foundation models for building general-purpose medical AI, where we thoroughly investigate three machine-learning paradigms, i.e., domain/task-specialized learning, joint learning, and continual learning, for training the VLMs and evaluate their generalization performance on cross-domain and cross-task test sets. To alleviate the catastrophic forgetting during sequential training, we employ rehearsal learning and receive a sharp boost in terms of generalization capability. In a nutshell, our empirical evidence suggests that continual learning may be a practical and efficient learning paradigm for the medical foundation model. And we hope researchers can use our empirical evidence as basement to further explore the path toward medical foundation model.

Applying HCAI in developing effective human-AI teaming: A perspective from human-AI joint cognitive systemsWei Xu, Zaifeng Gao
Research and application have used human-AI teaming (HAT) as a new paradigm to develop AI systems. HAT recognizes that AI will function as a teammate instead of simply a tool in collaboration with humans. Effective human-AI teams need to be capable of taking advantage of the unique abilities of both humans and AI while overcoming the known challenges and limitations of each member, augmenting human capabilities, and raising joint performance beyond that of either entity. The National AI Research and Strategic Plan 2023 update has recognized that research programs focusing primarily on the independent performance of AI systems generally fail to consider the functionality that AI must provide within the context of dynamic, adaptive, and collaborative teams and calls for further research on human-AI teaming and collaboration. However, there has been debate about whether AI can work as a teammate with humans. The primary concern is that adopting the "teaming" paradigm contradicts the human-centered AI (HCAI) approach, resulting in humans losing control of AI systems. This article further analyzes the HAT paradigm and the debates. Specifically, we elaborate on our proposed conceptual framework of human-AI joint cognitive systems (HAIJCS) and apply it to represent HAT under the HCAI umbrella. We believe that HAIJCS may help adopt HAI while enabling HCAI. The implications and future work for HAIJCS are also discussed. Knowledge Plugins: Enhancing Large Language Models for Domain-Specific RecommendationsJing Yao, Wei Xu, Jianxun Lian et al.
The significant progress of large language models (LLMs) provides a promising opportunity to build human-like systems for various practical applications. However, when applied to specific task domains, an LLM pre-trained on a general-purpose corpus may exhibit a deficit or inadequacy in two types of domain-specific knowledge. One is a comprehensive set of domain data that is typically large-scale and continuously evolving. The other is specific working patterns of this domain reflected in the data. The absence or inadequacy of such knowledge impacts the performance of the LLM. In this paper, we propose a general paradigm that augments LLMs with DOmain-specific KnowledgE to enhance their performance on practical applications, namely DOKE. This paradigm relies on a domain knowledge extractor, working in three steps: 1) preparing effective knowledge for the task; 2) selecting the knowledge for each specific sample; and 3) expressing the knowledge in an LLM-understandable way. Then, the extracted knowledge is incorporated through prompts, without any computational cost of model fine-tuning. We instantiate the general paradigm on a widespread application, i.e. recommender systems, where critical item attributes and collaborative filtering signals are incorporated. Experimental results demonstrate that DOKE can substantially improve the performance of LLMs in specific domains.

Course-Correction: Safety Alignment Using Synthetic PreferencesRongwu Xu, Yishuo Cai, Zhenhong Zhou et al. · uw
The risk of harmful content generated by large language models (LLMs) becomes a critical concern. This paper presents a systematic study on assessing and improving LLMs' capability to perform the task of \textbf{course-correction}, \ie, the model can steer away from generating harmful content autonomously. To start with, we introduce the \textsc{C$^2$-Eval} benchmark for quantitative assessment and analyze 10 popular LLMs, revealing varying proficiency of current safety-tuned LLMs in course-correction. To improve, we propose fine-tuning LLMs with preference learning, emphasizing the preference for timely course-correction. Using an automated pipeline, we create \textsc{C$^2$-Syn}, a synthetic dataset with 750K pairwise preferences, to teach models the concept of timely course-correction through data-driven preference learning. Experiments on 2 LLMs, \textsc{Llama2-Chat 7B} and \textsc{Qwen2 7B}, show that our method effectively enhances course-correction skills without affecting general performance. Additionally, it effectively improves LLMs' safety, particularly in resisting jailbreak attacks.

Wireless Network Digital Twin for 6G: Generative AI as A Key EnablerZhenyu Tao, Wei Xu, Yongming Huang et al.
Digital twin, which enables emulation, evaluation, and optimization of physical entities through synchronized digital replicas, has gained increasing attention as a promising technology for intricate wireless networks. For 6G, numerous innovative wireless technologies and network architectures have posed new challenges in establishing wireless network digital twins. To tackle these challenges, artificial intelligence (AI), particularly the flourishing generative AI, emerges as a potential solution. In this article, we discuss emerging prerequisites for wireless network digital twins considering the complicated network architecture, tremendous network scale, extensive coverage, and diversified application scenarios in the 6G era. We further explore the applications of generative AI, such as Transformer and diffusion model, to empower the 6G digital twin from multiple perspectives including physical-digital modeling, synchronization, and slicing capability. Subsequently, we propose a hierarchical generative AI-enabled wireless network digital twin at both the message-level and policy-level, and provide a typical use case with numerical results to validate the effectiveness and efficiency. Finally, open research issues for wireless network digital twins in the 6G era are discussed.

Improving Minimum Bayes Risk Decoding with Multi-PromptDavid Heineman, Yao Dou, Wei Xu · gatech
While instruction fine-tuned LLMs are effective text generators, sensitivity to prompt construction makes performance unstable and sub-optimal in practice. Relying on a single "best" prompt cannot capture all differing approaches to a generation problem. Using this observation, we propose multi-prompt decoding, where many candidate generations are decoded from a prompt bank at inference-time. To ensemble candidates, we use Minimum Bayes Risk (MBR) decoding, which selects a final output using a trained value metric. We show multi-prompt improves MBR across a comprehensive set of conditional generation tasks, and show this is a result of estimating a more diverse and higher quality candidate space than that of a single prompt. Further experiments confirm multi-prompt improves generation across tasks, models and metrics.

Integrated Sensing, Computation, and Communication for UAV-assisted Federated Edge LearningYao Tang, Guangxu Zhu, Wei Xu et al.
Federated edge learning (FEEL) enables privacy-preserving model training through periodic communication between edge devices and the server. Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-mounted edge devices are particularly advantageous for FEEL due to their flexibility and mobility in efficient data collection. In UAV-assisted FEEL, sensing, computation, and communication are coupled and compete for limited onboard resources, and UAV deployment also affects sensing and communication performance. Therefore, the joint design of UAV deployment and resource allocation is crucial to achieving the optimal training performance. In this paper, we address the problem of joint UAV deployment design and resource allocation for FEEL via a concrete case study of human motion recognition based on wireless sensing. We first analyze the impact of UAV deployment on the sensing quality and identify a threshold value for the sensing elevation angle that guarantees a satisfactory quality of data samples. Due to the non-ideal sensing channels, we consider the probabilistic sensing model, where the successful sensing probability of each UAV is determined by its position. Then, we derive the upper bound of the FEEL training loss as a function of the sensing probability. Theoretical results suggest that the convergence rate can be improved if UAVs have a uniform successful sensing probability. Based on this analysis, we formulate a training time minimization problem by jointly optimizing UAV deployment, integrated sensing, computation, and communication (ISCC) resources under a desirable optimality gap constraint. To solve this challenging mixed-integer non-convex problem, we apply the alternating optimization technique, and propose the bandwidth, batch size, and position optimization (BBPO) scheme to optimize these three decision variables alternately.

Agent Teaming Situation Awareness (ATSA): A Situation Awareness Framework for Human-AI TeamingQi Gao, Wei Xu, Mowei Shen et al.
The rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have led to a growing trend of human-AI teaming (HAT) in various fields. As machines continue to evolve from mere automation to a state of autonomy, they are increasingly exhibiting unexpected behaviors and human-like cognitive/intelligent capabilities, including situation awareness (SA). This shift has the potential to enhance the performance of mixed human-AI teams over all-human teams, underscoring the need for a better understanding of the dynamic SA interactions between humans and machines. To this end, we provide a review of leading SA theoretical models and a new framework for SA in the HAT context based on the key features and processes of HAT. The Agent Teaming Situation Awareness (ATSA) framework unifies human and AI behavior, and involves bidirectional, and dynamic interaction. The framework is based on the individual and team SA models and elaborates on the cognitive mechanisms for modeling HAT. Similar perceptual cycles are adopted for the individual (including both human and AI) and the whole team, which is tailored to the unique requirements of the HAT context. ATSA emphasizes cohesive and effective HAT through structures and components, including teaming understanding, teaming control, and the world, as well as adhesive transactive part. Text-guided Eyeglasses Manipulation with Spatial ConstraintsJiacheng Wang, Ping Liu, Jingen Liu et al.
Virtual try-on of eyeglasses involves placing eyeglasses of different shapes and styles onto a face image without physically trying them on. While existing methods have shown impressive results, the variety of eyeglasses styles is limited and the interactions are not always intuitive or efficient. To address these limitations, we propose a Text-guided Eyeglasses Manipulation method that allows for control of the eyeglasses shape and style based on a binary mask and text, respectively. Specifically, we introduce a mask encoder to extract mask conditions and a modulation module that enables simultaneous injection of text and mask conditions. This design allows for fine-grained control of the eyeglasses' appearance based on both textual descriptions and spatial constraints. Our approach includes a disentangled mapper and a decoupling strategy that preserves irrelevant areas, resulting in better local editing. We employ a two-stage training scheme to handle the different convergence speeds of the various modality conditions, successfully controlling both the shape and style of eyeglasses. Extensive comparison experiments and ablation analyses demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in achieving diverse eyeglasses styles while preserving irrelevant areas.

Computational Pathology in the Era of Emerging Foundation and Agentic AI -- International Expert Perspectives on Clinical Integration and Translational ReadinessQian Da, Yijiang Chen, Min Ju et al.
Recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence through foundation models and agents have accelerated the evolution of computational pathology. Demonstrated performance gains reported across academia in benchmarking datasets in predictive tasks such as diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response have ignited substantial enthusiasm for clinical application. Despite this development momentum, real world adoption has lagged, as implementation faces economic, technical, and administrative challenges. Beyond existing discussions of technical architectures and comparative performance, this review considers how these emerging AI systems can be responsibly integrated into medical practice by connecting deployable clinical relevance with downstream analytical capabilities and their technical maturity, operational readiness, and economic and regulatory context. Drawing on perspectives from an international group, we provide a practical assessment of current capabilities and barriers to adoption in patient care settings.

CogRail: Benchmarking VLMs in Cognitive Intrusion Perception for Intelligent Railway Transportation SystemsYonglin Tian, Qiyao Zhang, Wei Xu et al.
Accurate and early perception of potential intrusion targets is essential for ensuring the safety of railway transportation systems. However, most existing systems focus narrowly on object classification within fixed visual scopes and apply rule-based heuristics to determine intrusion status, often overlooking targets that pose latent intrusion risks. Anticipating such risks requires the cognition of spatial context and temporal dynamics for the object of interest (OOI), which presents challenges for conventional visual models. To facilitate deep intrusion perception, we introduce a novel benchmark, CogRail, which integrates curated open-source datasets with cognitively driven question-answer annotations to support spatio-temporal reasoning and prediction. Building upon this benchmark, we conduct a systematic evaluation of state-of-the-art visual-language models (VLMs) using multimodal prompts to identify their strengths and limitations in this domain. Furthermore, we fine-tune VLMs for better performance and propose a joint fine-tuning framework that integrates three core tasks, position perception, movement prediction, and threat analysis, facilitating effective adaptation of general-purpose foundation models into specialized models tailored for cognitive intrusion perception. Extensive experiments reveal that current large-scale multimodal models struggle with the complex spatial-temporal reasoning required by the cognitive intrusion perception task, underscoring the limitations of existing foundation models in this safety-critical domain. In contrast, our proposed joint fine-tuning framework significantly enhances model performance by enabling targeted adaptation to domain-specific reasoning demands, highlighting the advantages of structured multi-task learning in improving both accuracy and interpretability. PointMamba: A Simple State Space Model for Point Cloud AnalysisDingkang Liang, Xin Zhou, Wei Xu et al.
Transformers have become one of the foundational architectures in point cloud analysis tasks due to their excellent global modeling ability. However, the attention mechanism has quadratic complexity, making the design of a linear complexity method with global modeling appealing. In this paper, we propose PointMamba, transferring the success of Mamba, a recent representative state space model (SSM), from NLP to point cloud analysis tasks. Unlike traditional Transformers, PointMamba employs a linear complexity algorithm, presenting global modeling capacity while significantly reducing computational costs. Specifically, our method leverages space-filling curves for effective point tokenization and adopts an extremely simple, non-hierarchical Mamba encoder as the backbone. Comprehensive evaluations demonstrate that PointMamba achieves superior performance across multiple datasets while significantly reducing GPU memory usage and FLOPs. This work underscores the potential of SSMs in 3D vision-related tasks and presents a simple yet effective Mamba-based baseline for future research. Understanding and Improving Deep Graph Neural Networks: A Probabilistic Graphical Model PerspectiveJiayuan Chen, Xiang Zhang, Yinfei Xu et al.
Recently, graph-based models designed for downstream tasks have significantly advanced research on graph neural networks (GNNs). GNN baselines based on neural message-passing mechanisms such as GCN and GAT perform worse as the network deepens. Therefore, numerous GNN variants have been proposed to tackle this performance degradation problem, including many deep GNNs. However, a unified framework is still lacking to connect these existing models and interpret their effectiveness at a high level. In this work, we focus on deep GNNs and propose a novel view for understanding them. We establish a theoretical framework via inference on a probabilistic graphical model. Given the fixed point equation (FPE) derived from the variational inference on the Markov random fields, the deep GNNs, including JKNet, GCNII, DGCN, and the classical GNNs, such as GCN, GAT, and APPNP, can be regarded as different approximations of the FPE. Moreover, given this framework, more accurate approximations of FPE are brought, guiding us to design a more powerful GNN: coupling graph neural network (CoGNet). Extensive experiments are carried out on citation networks and natural language processing downstream tasks. The results demonstrate that the CoGNet outperforms the SOTA models.

A Computational Interface to Translate Strategic Intent from Unstructured Language in a Low-Data SettingPradyumna Tambwekar, Lakshita Dodeja, Nathan Vaska et al.
Many real-world tasks involve a mixed-initiative setup, wherein humans and AI systems collaboratively perform a task. While significant work has been conducted towards enabling humans to specify, through language, exactly how an agent should complete a task (i.e., low-level specification), prior work lacks on interpreting the high-level strategic intent of the human commanders. Parsing strategic intent from language will allow autonomous systems to independently operate according to the user's plan without frequent guidance or instruction. In this paper, we build a computational interface capable of translating unstructured language strategies into actionable intent in the form of goals and constraints. Leveraging a game environment, we collect a dataset of over 1000 examples, mapping language strategies to the corresponding goals and constraints, and show that our model, trained on this dataset, significantly outperforms human interpreters in inferring strategic intent (i.e., goals and constraints) from language (p < 0.05). Furthermore, we show that our model (125M parameters) significantly outperforms ChatGPT for this task (p < 0.05) in a low-data setting.

Rapid LoRA Aggregation for Wireless Channel Adaptation in Open-Set Radio Frequency FingerprintingMingxi Zhang, Renjie Xie, Jincheng Wang et al.
Radio frequency fingerprints (RFFs) enable secure wireless authentication but struggle in open-set scenarios with unknown devices and varying channels. Existing methods face challenges in generalization and incur high computational costs. We propose a lightweight, self-adaptive RFF extraction framework using Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA). By pretraining LoRA modules per environment, our method enables fast adaptation to unseen channel conditions without full retraining. During inference, a weighted combination of LoRAs dynamically enhances feature extraction. Experimental results demonstrate a 15% reduction in equal error rate (EER) compared to non-finetuned baselines and an 83% decrease in training time relative to full fine-tuning, using the same training dataset. This approach provides a scalable and efficient solution for open-set RFF authentication in dynamic wireless vehicular networks.
