We present BERTweet, the first public large-scale pre-trained language model for English Tweets. Our BERTweet, having the same architecture as BERT-base (Devlin et al., 2019), is trained using the RoBERTa pre-training procedure (Liu et al., 2019). Experiments show that BERTweet outperforms strong baselines RoBERTa-base and XLM-R-base (Conneau et al., 2020), producing better performance results than the previous state-of-the-art models on three Tweet NLP tasks: Part-of-speech tagging, Named-entity recognition and text classification. ETNLP: a visual-aided systematic approach to select pre-trained embeddings for a downstream taskXuan-Son Vu, Thanh Vu, Son N. Tran et al.
Given many recent advanced embedding models, selecting pre-trained word embedding (a.k.a., word representation) models best fit for a specific downstream task is non-trivial. In this paper, we propose a systematic approach, called ETNLP, for extracting, evaluating, and visualizing multiple sets of pre-trained word embeddings to determine which embeddings should be used in a downstream task. For extraction, we provide a method to extract subsets of the embeddings to be used in the downstream task. For evaluation, we analyse the quality of pre-trained embeddings using an input word analogy list. Finally, we visualize the word representations in the embedding space to explore the embedded words interactively. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on our pre-trained word embedding models in Vietnamese to select which models are suitable for a named entity recognition (NER) task. Specifically, we create a large Vietnamese word analogy list to evaluate and select the pre-trained embedding models for the task. We then utilize the selected embeddings for the NER task and achieve the new state-of-the-art results on the task benchmark dataset. We also apply the approach to another downstream task of privacy-guaranteed embedding selection, and show that it helps users quickly select the most suitable embeddings. In addition, we create an open-source system using the proposed systematic approach to facilitate similar studies on other NLP tasks. A Fast and Accurate Vietnamese Word SegmenterDat Quoc Nguyen, Dai Quoc Nguyen, Thanh Vu et al.
We propose a novel approach to Vietnamese word segmentation. Our approach is based on the Single Classification Ripple Down Rules methodology (Compton and Jansen, 1990), where rules are stored in an exception structure and new rules are only added to correct segmentation errors given by existing rules. Experimental results on the benchmark Vietnamese treebank show that our approach outperforms previous state-of-the-art approaches JVnSegmenter, vnTokenizer, DongDu and UETsegmenter in terms of both accuracy and performance speed. MedDCR: Learning to Design Agentic Workflows for Medical CodingJiyang Zheng, Islam Nassar, Thanh Vu et al.
Medical coding converts free-text clinical notes into standardized diagnostic and procedural codes, which are essential for billing, hospital operations, and medical research. Unlike ordinary text classification, it requires multi-step reasoning: extracting diagnostic concepts, applying guideline constraints, mapping to hierarchical codebooks, and ensuring cross-document consistency. Recent advances leverage agentic LLMs, but most rely on rigid, manually crafted workflows that fail to capture the nuance and variability of real-world documentation, leaving open the question of how to systematically learn effective workflows. We present MedDCR, a closed-loop framework that treats workflow design as a learning problem. A Designer proposes workflows, a Coder executes them, and a Reflector evaluates predictions and provides constructive feedback, while a memory archive preserves prior designs for reuse and iterative refinement. On benchmark datasets, MedDCR outperforms state-of-the-art baselines and produces interpretable, adaptable workflows that better reflect real coding practice, improving both the reliability and trustworthiness of automated systems.

Automatic post-editing (APE) is an important remedy for reducing errors of raw translated texts that are produced by machine translation (MT) systems or software-aided translation. In this paper, we present a systematic approach to tackle the APE task for Vietnamese. Specifically, we construct the first large-scale dataset of 5M Vietnamese translated and corrected sentence pairs. We then apply strong neural MT models to handle the APE task, using our constructed dataset. Experimental results from both automatic and human evaluations show the effectiveness of the neural MT models in handling the Vietnamese APE task.

WNUT-2020 Task 2: Identification of Informative COVID-19 English TweetsDat Quoc Nguyen, Thanh Vu, Afshin Rahimi et al.
In this paper, we provide an overview of the WNUT-2020 shared task on the identification of informative COVID-19 English Tweets. We describe how we construct a corpus of 10K Tweets and organize the development and evaluation phases for this task. In addition, we also present a brief summary of results obtained from the final system evaluation submissions of 55 teams, finding that (i) many systems obtain very high performance, up to 0.91 F1 score, (ii) the majority of the submissions achieve substantially higher results than the baseline fastText (Joulin et al., 2017), and (iii) fine-tuning pre-trained language models on relevant language data followed by supervised training performs well in this task.
HSD Shared Task in VLSP Campaign 2019:Hate Speech Detection for Social GoodXuan-Son Vu, Thanh Vu, Mai-Vu Tran et al.
The paper describes the organisation of the "HateSpeech Detection" (HSD) task at the VLSP workshop 2019 on detecting the fine-grained presence of hate speech in Vietnamese textual items (i.e., messages) extracted from Facebook, which is the most popular social network site (SNS) in Vietnam. The task is organised as a multi-class classification task and based on a large-scale dataset containing 25,431 Vietnamese textual items from Facebook. The task participants were challenged to build a classification model that is capable of classifying an item to one of 3 classes, i.e., "HATE", "OFFENSIVE" and "CLEAN". HSD attracted a large number of participants and was a popular task at VLSP 2019. In particular, there were 71 teams signed up for the task, 14 of them submitted results with 380 valid submissions from 20th September 2019 to 4th October 2019.
A Label Attention Model for ICD Coding from Clinical TextThanh Vu, Dat Quoc Nguyen, Anthony Nguyen
ICD coding is a process of assigning the International Classification of Disease diagnosis codes to clinical/medical notes documented by health professionals (e.g. clinicians). This process requires significant human resources, and thus is costly and prone to error. To handle the problem, machine learning has been utilized for automatic ICD coding. Previous state-of-the-art models were based on convolutional neural networks, using a single/several fixed window sizes. However, the lengths and interdependence between text fragments related to ICD codes in clinical text vary significantly, leading to the difficulty of deciding what the best window sizes are. In this paper, we propose a new label attention model for automatic ICD coding, which can handle both the various lengths and the interdependence of the ICD code related text fragments. Furthermore, as the majority of ICD codes are not frequently used, leading to the extremely imbalanced data issue, we additionally propose a hierarchical joint learning mechanism extending our label attention model to handle the issue, using the hierarchical relationships among the codes. Our label attention model achieves new state-of-the-art results on three benchmark MIMIC datasets, and the joint learning mechanism helps improve the performances for infrequent codes.

A Capsule Network-based Embedding Model for Search PersonalizationDai Quoc Nguyen, Thanh Vu, Tu Dinh Nguyen et al.
Search personalization aims to tailor search results to each specific user based on the user's personal interests and preferences (i.e., the user profile). Recent research approaches to search personalization by modelling the potential 3-way relationship between the submitted query, the user and the search results (i.e., documents). That relationship is then used to personalize the search results to that user. In this paper, we introduce a novel embedding model based on capsule network, which recently is a breakthrough in deep learning, to model the 3-way relationships for search personalization. In the model, each user (submitted query or returned document) is embedded by a vector in the same vector space. The 3-way relationship is described as a triple of (query, user, document) which is then modeled as a 3-column matrix containing the three embedding vectors. After that, the 3-column matrix is fed into a deep learning architecture to re-rank the search results returned by a basis ranker. Experimental results on query logs from a commercial web search engine show that our model achieves better performances than the basis ranker as well as strong search personalization baselines.
From Word Segmentation to POS Tagging for VietnameseDat Quoc Nguyen, Thanh Vu, Dai Quoc Nguyen et al.
This paper presents an empirical comparison of two strategies for Vietnamese Part-of-Speech (POS) tagging from unsegmented text: (i) a pipeline strategy where we consider the output of a word segmenter as the input of a POS tagger, and (ii) a joint strategy where we predict a combined segmentation and POS tag for each syllable. We also make a comparison between state-of-the-art (SOTA) feature-based and neural network-based models. On the benchmark Vietnamese treebank (Nguyen et al., 2009), experimental results show that the pipeline strategy produces better scores of POS tagging from unsegmented text than the joint strategy, and the highest accuracy is obtained by using a feature-based model.

Personalised Query Suggestion for Intranet Search with Temporal User ProfilingThanh Vu, Alistair Willis, Udo Kruschwitz et al.
Recent research has shown the usefulness of using collective user interaction data (e.g., query logs) to recommend query modification suggestions for Intranet search. However, most of the query suggestion approaches for Intranet search follow an "one size fits all" strategy, whereby different users who submit an identical query would get the same query suggestion list. This is problematic, as even with the same query, different users may have different topics of interest, which may change over time in response to the user's interaction with the system. We address the problem by proposing a personalised query suggestion framework for Intranet search. For each search session, we construct two temporal user profiles: a click user profile using the user's clicked documents and a query user profile using the user's submitted queries. We then use the two profiles to re-rank the non-personalised query suggestion list returned by a state-of-the-art query suggestion method for Intranet search. Experimental results on a large-scale query logs collection show that our personalised framework significantly improves the quality of suggested queries.

Recent research has shown that the performance of search personalization depends on the richness of user profiles which normally represent the user's topical interests. In this paper, we propose a new embedding approach to learning user profiles, where users are embedded on a topical interest space. We then directly utilize the user profiles for search personalization. Experiments on query logs from a major commercial web search engine demonstrate that our embedding approach improves the performance of the search engine and also achieves better search performance than other strong baselines.
