Trustworthy Image Semantic Communication with GenAI: Explainablity, Controllability, and EfficiencyXijun Wang, Dongshan Ye, Chenyuan Feng et al.
Image semantic communication (ISC) has garnered significant attention for its potential to achieve high efficiency in visual content transmission. However, existing ISC systems based on joint source-channel coding face challenges in interpretability, operability, and compatibility. To address these limitations, we propose a novel trustworthy ISC framework. This approach leverages text extraction and segmentation mapping techniques to convert images into explainable semantics, while employing Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) for multiple downstream inference tasks. We also introduce a multi-rate ISC transmission protocol that dynamically adapts to both the received explainable semantic content and specific task requirements at the receiver. Simulation results demonstrate that our framework achieves explainable learning, decoupled training, and compatible transmission in various application scenarios. Finally, some intriguing research directions and application scenarios are identified.

FoundIR-v2: Optimizing Pre-Training Data Mixtures for Image Restoration Foundation ModelXiang Chen, Jinshan Pan, Jiangxin Dong et al.
Recent studies have witnessed significant advances in image restoration foundation models driven by improvements in the scale and quality of pre-training data. In this work, we find that the data mixture proportions from different restoration tasks are also a critical factor directly determining the overall performance of all-in-one image restoration models. To this end, we propose a high-capacity diffusion-based image restoration foundation model, FoundIR-v2, which adopts a data equilibrium scheduling paradigm to dynamically optimize the proportions of mixed training datasets from different tasks. By leveraging the data mixing law, our method ensures a balanced dataset composition, enabling the model to achieve consistent generalization and comprehensive performance across diverse tasks. Furthermore, we introduce an effective Mixture-of-Experts (MoE)-driven scheduler into generative pre-training to flexibly allocate task-adaptive diffusion priors for each restoration task, accounting for the distinct degradation forms and levels exhibited by different tasks. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method can address over 50 sub-tasks across a broader scope of real-world scenarios and achieves favorable performance against state-of-the-art approaches.
On Robustness and Bias Analysis of BERT-based Relation ExtractionLuoqiu Li, Xiang Chen, Hongbin Ye et al.
Fine-tuning pre-trained models have achieved impressive performance on standard natural language processing benchmarks. However, the resultant model generalizability remains poorly understood. We do not know, for example, how excellent performance can lead to the perfection of generalization models. In this study, we analyze a fine-tuned BERT model from different perspectives using relation extraction. We also characterize the differences in generalization techniques according to our proposed improvements. From empirical experimentation, we find that BERT suffers a bottleneck in terms of robustness by way of randomizations, adversarial and counterfactual tests, and biases (i.e., selection and semantic). These findings highlight opportunities for future improvements. Our open-sourced testbed DiagnoseRE is available in \url{https://github.com/zjunlp/DiagnoseRE}.

FoundIR: Unleashing Million-scale Training Data to Advance Foundation Models for Image RestorationHao Li, Xiang Chen, Jiangxin Dong et al.
Despite the significant progress made by all-in-one models in universal image restoration, existing methods suffer from a generalization bottleneck in real-world scenarios, as they are mostly trained on small-scale synthetic datasets with limited degradations. Therefore, large-scale high-quality real-world training data is urgently needed to facilitate the emergence of foundational models for image restoration. To advance this field, we spare no effort in contributing a million-scale dataset with two notable advantages over existing training data: real-world samples with larger-scale, and degradation types with higher diversity. By adjusting internal camera settings and external imaging conditions, we can capture aligned image pairs using our well-designed data acquisition system over multiple rounds and our data alignment criterion. Moreover, we propose a robust model, FoundIR, to better address a broader range of restoration tasks in real-world scenarios, taking a further step toward foundation models. Specifically, we first utilize a diffusion-based generalist model to remove degradations by learning the degradation-agnostic common representations from diverse inputs, where incremental learning strategy is adopted to better guide model training. To refine the model's restoration capability in complex scenarios, we introduce degradation-aware specialist models for achieving final high-quality results. Extensive experiments show the value of our dataset and the effectiveness of our method.

Learning color space adaptation from synthetic to real images of cirrus cloudsQing Lyu, Minghao Chen, Xiang Chen
Cloud segmentation plays a crucial role in image analysis for climate modeling. Manually labeling the training data for cloud segmentation is time-consuming and error-prone. We explore to train segmentation networks with synthetic data due to the natural acquisition of pixel-level labels. Nevertheless, the domain gap between synthetic and real images significantly degrades the performance of the trained model. We propose a color space adaptation method to bridge the gap, by training a color-sensitive generator and discriminator to adapt synthetic data to real images in color space. Instead of transforming images by general convolutional kernels, we adopt a set of closed-form operations to make color-space adjustments while preserving the labels. We also construct a synthetic-to-real cirrus cloud dataset SynCloud and demonstrate the adaptation efficacy on the semantic segmentation task of cirrus clouds. With our adapted synthetic data for training the semantic segmentation, we achieve an improvement of 6:59% when applied to real images, superior to alternative methods.
