DeltaV: Thinking with Visual State Updates in Unified Large Multimodal Models

Pengjie Wang, Linger Deng, Zujia Zhang et al.

Current Unified Large Multimodal Models (ULMMs) support interleaved multimodal reasoning through textual reasoning and intermediate visual states, but typically generate each visual state as a full image. This full-image generation paradigm introduces substantial visual-token redundancy and dilutes supervision on sparse yet reasoning-critical state transitions. We propose DeltaV, a ULMM that replaces full-image generation with visual updates. Conditioned on historical visual states, DeltaV incrementally predicts compact update tokens that capture the visual changes across reasoning steps, avoiding repeated modeling of unchanged content. To align the token budget of each update with the magnitude of visual change, DeltaV introduces a temporal similarity (TSIM) Router, which stops allocating tokens once the marginal reconstruction gain falls below a threshold. To support more diverse and generalizable reasoning, we further construct StructCoT, a large-scale interleaved multimodal reasoning dataset with 1.05M samples spanning 44 task domains. Experiments show that the visual-update paradigm reduces newly generated visual tokens by 55.6\% on average without compromising reconstruction fidelity, and improves multimodal reasoning by 3.3\% over full-image generation. Trained with StructCoT and large-scale multimodal data, DeltaV-2B further outperforms substantially larger open-source models by 8.4\% on in-domain multimodal reasoning evaluations and surpasses the comparable-scale Qwen3-VL-2B by 5.9\% on external multimodal reasoning and understanding benchmarks. Code, models, and StructCoT will be released at https://github.com/Pengjie-W/DeltaV.

GeoFocus: Blending Efficient Global-to-Local Perception for Multimodal Geometry Problem-Solving

Linger Deng, Yuliang Liu, Wenwen Yu et al.

Geometry problem-solving remains a significant challenge for Large Multimodal Models (LMMs), requiring not only global shape recognition but also attention to intricate local relationships related to geometric theory. To address this, we propose GeoFocus, a novel framework comprising two core modules. 1) Critical Local Perceptor, which automatically identifies and emphasizes critical local structure (e.g., angles, parallel lines, comparative distances) through thirteen theory-based perception templates, boosting critical local feature coverage by 61% compared to previous methods. 2) VertexLang, a compact topology formal language, encodes global figures through vertex coordinates and connectivity relations. By replacing bulky code-based encodings, VertexLang reduces global perception training time by 20% while improving topology recognition accuracy. When evaluated in Geo3K, GeoQA, and FormalGeo7K, GeoFocus achieves a 4.7% accuracy improvement over leading specialized models and demonstrates superior robustness in MATHVERSE under diverse visual conditions. Theorem-Validated Reverse Chain-of-Thought Problem Generation for Geometric Reasoning

Linger Deng, Linghao Zhu, Yuliang Liu et al.

Large Multimodal Models (LMMs) face limitations in geometric reasoning due to insufficient Chain of Thought (CoT) image-text training data. While existing approaches leverage template-based or LLM-assisted methods for geometric CoT data creation, they often face challenges in achieving both diversity and precision. To bridge this gap, we introduce a two-stage Theorem-Validated Reverse Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Synthesis (TR-CoT) framework. The first stage, TR-Engine, synthesizes theorem-grounded geometric diagrams with structured descriptions and properties. The second stage, TR-Reasoner, employs reverse reasoning to iteratively refine question-answer pairs by cross-validating geometric properties and description fragments. Our approach expands theorem-type coverage, corrects long-standing misunderstandings, and enhances geometric reasoning. Fine-grained CoT improves theorem understanding and increases logical consistency by 24.5%. Our best models surpass the baselines in MathVista and GeoQA by 10.1% and 4.7%, outperforming advanced closed-source models like GPT-4o.

VimTS: A Unified Video and Image Text Spotter for Enhancing the Cross-domain Generalization

Yuliang Liu, Mingxin Huang, Hao Yan et al.

Text spotting, a task involving the extraction of textual information from image or video sequences, faces challenges in cross-domain adaption, such as image-to-image and image-to-video generalization. In this paper, we introduce a new method, termed VimTS, which enhances the generalization ability of the model by achieving better synergy among different tasks. Typically, we propose a Prompt Queries Generation Module and a Tasks-aware Adapter to effectively convert the original single-task model into a multi-task model suitable for both image and video scenarios with minimal additional parameters. The Prompt Queries Generation Module facilitates explicit interaction between different tasks, while the Tasks-aware Adapter helps the model dynamically learn suitable features for each task. Additionally, to further enable the model to learn temporal information at a lower cost, we propose a synthetic video text dataset (VTD-368k) by leveraging the Content Deformation Fields (CoDeF) algorithm. Notably, our method outperforms the state-of-the-art method by an average of 2.6% in six cross-domain benchmarks such as TT-to-IC15, CTW1500-to-TT, and TT-to-CTW1500. For video-level cross-domain adaption, our method even surpasses the previous end-to-end video spotting method in ICDAR2015 video and DSText v2 by an average of 5.5% on the MOTA metric, using only image-level data. We further demonstrate that existing Large Multimodal Models exhibit limitations in generating cross-domain scene text spotting, in contrast to our VimTS model which requires significantly fewer parameters and data. The code and datasets will be made available at the https://VimTextSpotter.github.io.

Progressive Evolution from Single-Point to Polygon for Scene Text

Linger Deng, Mingxin Huang, Xudong Xie et al.

The advancement of text shape representations towards compactness has enhanced text detection and spotting performance, but at a high annotation cost. Current models use single-point annotations to reduce costs, yet they lack sufficient localization information for downstream applications. To overcome this limitation, we introduce Point2Polygon, which can efficiently transform single-points into compact polygons. Our method uses a coarse-to-fine process, starting with creating and selecting anchor points based on recognition confidence, then vertically and horizontally refining the polygon using recognition information to optimize its shape. We demonstrate the accuracy of the generated polygons through extensive experiments: 1) By creating polygons from ground truth points, we achieved an accuracy of 82.0% on ICDAR 2015; 2) In training detectors with polygons generated by our method, we attained 86% of the accuracy relative to training with ground truth (GT); 3) Additionally, the proposed Point2Polygon can be seamlessly integrated to empower single-point spotters to generate polygons. This integration led to an impressive 82.5% accuracy for the generated polygons. It is worth mentioning that our method relies solely on synthetic recognition information, eliminating the need for any manual annotation beyond single points.
