An Out-of-Domain Synapse Detection Challenge for Microwasp Brain Connectomes

Jingpeng Wu, Yicong Li, Nishika Gupta et al.

The size of image stacks in connectomics studies now reaches the terabyte and often petabyte scales with a great diversity of appearance across brain regions and samples. However, manual annotation of neural structures, e.g., synapses, is time-consuming, which leads to limited training data often smaller than 0.001\% of the test data in size. Domain adaptation and generalization approaches were proposed to address similar issues for natural images, which were less evaluated on connectomics data due to a lack of out-of-domain benchmarks.

X-Ray2EM: Uncertainty-Aware Cross-Modality Image Reconstruction from X-Ray to Electron Microscopy in Connectomics

Yicong Li, Yaron Meirovitch, Aaron T. Kuan et al.

Comprehensive, synapse-resolution imaging of the brain will be crucial for understanding neuronal computations and function. In connectomics, this has been the sole purview of volume electron microscopy (EM), which entails an excruciatingly difficult process because it requires cutting tissue into many thin, fragile slices that then need to be imaged, aligned, and reconstructed. Unlike EM, hard X-ray imaging is compatible with thick tissues, eliminating the need for thin sectioning, and delivering fast acquisition, intrinsic alignment, and isotropic resolution. Unfortunately, current state-of-the-art X-ray microscopy provides much lower resolution, to the extent that segmenting membranes is very challenging. We propose an uncertainty-aware 3D reconstruction model that translates X-ray images to EM-like images with enhanced membrane segmentation quality, showing its potential for developing simpler, faster, and more accurate X-ray based connectomics pipelines.

Towards 1000-fold Electron Microscopy Image Compression for Connectomics via VQ-VAE with Transformer Prior

Fuming Yang, Yicong Li, Hanspeter Pfister et al.

Petascale electron microscopy (EM) datasets push storage, transfer, and downstream analysis toward their current limits. We present a vector-quantized variational autoencoder-based (VQ-VAE) compression framework for EM that spans 16x to 1024x and enables pay-as-you-decode usage: top-only decoding for extreme compression, with an optional Transformer prior that predicts bottom tokens (without changing the compression ratio) to restore texture via feature-wise linear modulation (FiLM) and concatenation; we further introduce an ROI-driven workflow that performs selective high-resolution reconstruction from 1024x-compressed latents only where needed.

Personality Analysis from Online Short Video Platforms with Multi-domain Adaptation

Sixu An, Xiangguo Sun, Yicong Li et al.

Personality analysis from online short videos has gained prominence due to its applications in personalized recommendation systems, sentiment analysis, and human-computer interaction. Traditional assessment methods, such as questionnaires based on the Big Five Personality Framework, are limited by self-report biases and are impractical for large-scale or real-time analysis. Leveraging the rich, multi-modal data present in short videos offers a promising alternative for more accurate personality inference. However, integrating these diverse and asynchronous modalities poses significant challenges, particularly in aligning time-varying data and ensuring models generalize well to new domains with limited labeled data. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-modal personality analysis framework that addresses these challenges by synchronizing and integrating features from multiple modalities and enhancing model generalization through domain adaptation. We introduce a timestamp-based modality alignment mechanism that synchronizes data based on spoken word timestamps, ensuring accurate correspondence across modalities and facilitating effective feature integration. To capture temporal dependencies and inter-modal interactions, we employ Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory networks and self-attention mechanisms, allowing the model to focus on the most informative features for personality prediction. Furthermore, we develop a gradient-based domain adaptation method that transfers knowledge from multiple source domains to improve performance in target domains with scarce labeled data. Extensive experiments on real-world datasets demonstrate that our framework significantly outperforms existing methods in personality prediction tasks, highlighting its effectiveness in capturing complex behavioral cues and robustness in adapting to new domains.
