Vision-Enhanced Semantic Entity Recognition in Document Images via Visually-Asymmetric Consistency LearningHao Wang, Xiahua Chen, Rui Wang et al.
Extracting meaningful entities belonging to predefined categories from Visually-rich Form-like Documents (VFDs) is a challenging task. Visual and layout features such as font, background, color, and bounding box location and size provide important cues for identifying entities of the same type. However, existing models commonly train a visual encoder with weak cross-modal supervision signals, resulting in a limited capacity to capture these non-textual features and suboptimal performance. In this paper, we propose a novel \textbf{V}isually-\textbf{A}symmetric co\textbf{N}sisten\textbf{C}y \textbf{L}earning (\textsc{Vancl}) approach that addresses the above limitation by enhancing the model's ability to capture fine-grained visual and layout features through the incorporation of color priors. Experimental results on benchmark datasets show that our approach substantially outperforms the strong LayoutLM series baseline, demonstrating the effectiveness of our approach. Additionally, we investigate the effects of different color schemes on our approach, providing insights for optimizing model performance. We believe our work will inspire future research on multimodal information extraction.

F$^3$Loc: Fusion and Filtering for Floorplan LocalizationChangan Chen, Rui Wang, Christoph Vogel et al.
In this paper we propose an efficient data-driven solution to self-localization within a floorplan. Floorplan data is readily available, long-term persistent and inherently robust to changes in the visual appearance. Our method does not require retraining per map and location or demand a large database of images of the area of interest. We propose a novel probabilistic model consisting of an observation and a novel temporal filtering module. Operating internally with an efficient ray-based representation, the observation module consists of a single and a multiview module to predict horizontal depth from images and fuses their results to benefit from advantages offered by either methodology. Our method operates on conventional consumer hardware and overcomes a common limitation of competing methods that often demand upright images. Our full system meets real-time requirements, while outperforming the state-of-the-art by a significant margin.

Exploring 3D-aware Lifespan Face Aging via Disentangled Shape-Texture RepresentationsQianrui Teng, Rui Wang, Xing Cui et al.
Existing face aging methods often focus on modeling either texture aging or using an entangled shape-texture representation to achieve face aging. However, shape and texture are two distinct factors that mutually affect the human face aging process. In this paper, we propose 3D-STD, a novel 3D-aware Shape-Texture Disentangled face aging network that explicitly disentangles the facial image into shape and texture representations using 3D face reconstruction. Additionally, to facilitate high-fidelity texture synthesis, we propose a novel texture generation method based on Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD). Extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in terms of shape and texture transformation. Moreover, our method supports producing plausible 3D face aging results, which is rarely accomplished by current methods.

RIS-empowered Topology Control for Distributed Learning in Urban Air MobilityKai Xiong, Rui Wang, Supeng Leng et al.
Urban Air Mobility (UAM) expands vehicles from the ground to the near-ground space, envisioned as a revolution for transportation systems. Comprehensive scene perception is the foundation for autonomous aerial driving. However, UAM encounters the intelligent perception challenge: high perception learning requirements conflict with the limited sensors and computing chips of flying cars. To overcome the challenge, federated learning (FL) and other collaborative learning have been proposed to enable resource-limited devices to conduct onboard deep learning (DL) collaboratively. But traditional collaborative learning like FL relies on a central integrator for DL model aggregation, which is difficult to deploy in dynamic environments. The fully decentralized learning schemes may be the intuitive solution while the convergence of distributed learning cannot be guaranteed. Accordingly, this paper explores reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) empowered distributed learning, taking account of topological attributes to facilitate the learning performance with convergence guarantee. We propose several FL topological criteria for optimizing the transmission delay and convergence rate by exploiting the Laplacian matrix eigenvalues of the communication network. Subsequently, we innovatively leverage the RIS link modification ability to remold the current network according to the proposed topological criteria. This paper rethinks the functions of RIS from the perspective of the network layer. Furthermore, a deep deterministic policy gradient-based RIS phase shift control algorithm is developed to construct or deconstruct the network links simultaneously to reshape the communication network. Simulation experiments are conducted over MobileNet-based multi-view learning to verify the efficiency of the distributed FL framework.

Exploring the Robustness of Human Parsers Towards Common CorruptionsSanyi Zhang, Xiaochun Cao, Rui Wang et al.
Human parsing aims to segment each pixel of the human image with fine-grained semantic categories. However, current human parsers trained with clean data are easily confused by numerous image corruptions such as blur and noise. To improve the robustness of human parsers, in this paper, we construct three corruption robustness benchmarks, termed LIP-C, ATR-C, and Pascal-Person-Part-C, to assist us in evaluating the risk tolerance of human parsing models. Inspired by the data augmentation strategy, we propose a novel heterogeneous augmentation-enhanced mechanism to bolster robustness under commonly corrupted conditions. Specifically, two types of data augmentations from different views, i.e., image-aware augmentation and model-aware image-to-image transformation, are integrated in a sequential manner for adapting to unforeseen image corruptions. The image-aware augmentation can enrich the high diversity of training images with the help of common image operations. The model-aware augmentation strategy that improves the diversity of input data by considering the model's randomness. The proposed method is model-agnostic, and it can plug and play into arbitrary state-of-the-art human parsing frameworks. The experimental results show that the proposed method demonstrates good universality which can improve the robustness of the human parsing models and even the semantic segmentation models when facing various image common corruptions. Meanwhile, it can still obtain approximate performance on clean data.
