Toward the Tradeoffs between Privacy, Fairness and Utility in Federated LearningKangkang Sun, Xiaojin Zhang, Xi Lin et al.
Federated Learning (FL) is a novel privacy-protection distributed machine learning paradigm that guarantees user privacy and prevents the risk of data leakage due to the advantage of the client's local training. Researchers have struggled to design fair FL systems that ensure fairness of results. However, the interplay between fairness and privacy has been less studied. Increasing the fairness of FL systems can have an impact on user privacy, while an increase in user privacy can affect fairness. In this work, on the client side, we use fairness metrics, such as Demographic Parity (DemP), Equalized Odds (EOs), and Disparate Impact (DI), to construct the local fair model. To protect the privacy of the client model, we propose a privacy-protection fairness FL method. The results show that the accuracy of the fair model with privacy increases because privacy breaks the constraints of the fairness metrics. In our experiments, we conclude the relationship between privacy, fairness and utility, and there is a tradeoff between these.

Online Relocating and Matching of Ride-Hailing Services: A Model-Based Modular ApproachChang Gao, Xi Lin, Fang He et al.
This study proposes an innovative model-based modular approach (MMA) to dynamically optimize order matching and vehicle relocation in a ride-hailing platform. MMA utilizes a two-layer and modular modeling structure. The upper layer determines the spatial transfer patterns of vehicle flow within the system to maximize the total revenue of the current and future stages. With the guidance provided by the upper layer, the lower layer performs rapid vehicle-to-order matching and vehicle relocation. MMA is interpretable, and equipped with the customized and polynomial-time algorithm, which, as an online order-matching and vehicle-relocation algorithm, can scale past thousands of vehicles. We theoretically prove that the proposed algorithm can achieve the global optimum in stylized networks, while the numerical experiments based on both the toy network and realistic dataset demonstrate that MMA is capable of achieving superior systematic performance compared to batch matching and reinforcement-learning based methods. Moreover, its modular and lightweight modeling structure further enables it to achieve a high level of robustness against demand variation while maintaining a relatively low computational cost.
Graph Unlearning Meets Influence-aware Negative Preference OptimizationQiang Chen, Zhongze Wu, Ang He et al.
Recent advancements in graph unlearning models have enhanced model utility by preserving the node representation essentially invariant, while using gradient ascent on the forget set to achieve unlearning. However, this approach causes a drastic degradation in model utility during the unlearning process due to the rapid divergence speed of gradient ascent. In this paper, we introduce \textbf{INPO}, an \textbf{I}nfluence-aware \textbf{N}egative \textbf{P}reference \textbf{O}ptimization framework that focuses on slowing the divergence speed and improving the robustness of the model utility to the unlearning process. Specifically, we first analyze that NPO has slower divergence speed and theoretically propose that unlearning high-influence edges can reduce impact of unlearning. We design an influence-aware message function to amplify the influence of unlearned edges and mitigate the tight topological coupling between the forget set and the retain set. The influence of each edge is quickly estimated by a removal-based method. Additionally, we propose a topological entropy loss from the perspective of topology to avoid excessive information loss in the local structure during unlearning. Extensive experiments conducted on five real-world datasets demonstrate that INPO-based model achieves state-of-the-art performance on all forget quality metrics while maintaining the model's utility. Spikewhisper: Temporal Spike Backdoor Attacks on Federated Neuromorphic Learning over Low-power DevicesHanqing Fu, Gaolei Li, Jun Wu et al.
Federated neuromorphic learning (FedNL) leverages event-driven spiking neural networks and federated learning frameworks to effectively execute intelligent analysis tasks over amounts of distributed low-power devices but also perform vulnerability to poisoning attacks. The threat of backdoor attacks on traditional deep neural networks typically comes from time-invariant data. However, in FedNL, unknown threats may be hidden in time-varying spike signals. In this paper, we start to explore a novel vulnerability of FedNL-based systems with the concept of time division multiplexing, termed Spikewhisper, which allows attackers to evade detection as much as possible, as multiple malicious clients can imperceptibly poison with different triggers at different timeslices. In particular, the stealthiness of Spikewhisper is derived from the time-domain divisibility of global triggers, in which each malicious client pastes only one local trigger to a certain timeslice in the neuromorphic sample, and also the polarity and motion of each local trigger can be configured by attackers. Extensive experiments based on two different neuromorphic datasets demonstrate that the attack success rate of Spikewispher is higher than the temporally centralized attacks. Besides, it is validated that the effect of Spikewispher is sensitive to the trigger duration.

OpticGAI: Generative AI-aided Deep Reinforcement Learning for Optical Networks OptimizationSiyuan Li, Xi Lin, Yaju Liu et al.
Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) is regarded as a promising tool for optical network optimization. However, the flexibility and efficiency of current DRL-based solutions for optical network optimization require further improvement. Currently, generative models have showcased their significant performance advantages across various domains. In this paper, we introduce OpticGAI, the AI-generated policy design paradigm for optical networks. In detail, it is implemented as a novel DRL framework that utilizes generative models to learn the optimal policy network. Furthermore, we assess the performance of OpticGAI on two NP-hard optical network problems, Routing and Wavelength Assignment (RWA) and dynamic Routing, Modulation, and Spectrum Allocation (RMSA), to show the feasibility of the AI-generated policy paradigm. Simulation results have shown that OpticGAI achieves the highest reward and the lowest blocking rate of both RWA and RMSA problems. OpticGAI poses a promising direction for future research on generative AI-enhanced flexible optical network optimization.

Multi-Vehicle Routing Problems with Soft Time Windows: A Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning ApproachKe Zhang, Meng Li, Zhengchao Zhang et al.
Multi-vehicle routing problem with soft time windows (MVRPSTW) is an indispensable constituent in urban logistics distribution systems. Over the past decade, numerous methods for MVRPSTW have been proposed, but most are based on heuristic rules that require a large amount of computation time. With the current rapid increase of logistics demands, traditional methods incur the dilemma between computational efficiency and solution quality. To efficiently solve the problem, we propose a novel reinforcement learning algorithm called the Multi-Agent Attention Model that can solve routing problem instantly benefit from lengthy offline training. Specifically, the vehicle routing problem is regarded as a vehicle tour generation process, and an encoder-decoder framework with attention layers is proposed to generate tours of multiple vehicles iteratively. Furthermore, a multi-agent reinforcement learning method with an unsupervised auxiliary network is developed for the model training. By evaluated on four synthetic networks with different scales, the results demonstrate that the proposed method consistently outperforms Google OR-Tools and traditional methods with little computation time. In addition, we validate the robustness of the well-trained model by varying the number of customers and the capacities of vehicles.
