Skill Is Not Document: A Query-Conditional Benchmark and Two-Stage Retriever for LLM Agent Skill RoutingZifei Wang, Wei Wen, Qiang Ji et al.
LLM agents complete complex tasks by composing multiple skills, and skill retrieval is a front-end stage for agents. Skill retrieval differs fundamentally from traditional document retrieval at the supervision level: top-K joint correctness depends not only on the semantic relevance of each individual query-skill pair, but also on whether the skills retrieved together can collaborate to fulfill the task under the given query. Such "skill compatibility" cannot be derived from independent relevance alone. Yet existing LLM-based data synthesis pipelines can produce a direct supervision signal for "which skills should not be jointly retrieved under this query" -- namely the LLM's own rejection decisions -- and this signal is routinely discarded as low-quality data. To address this gap, we propose Reject-as-Resource Retriever (R3) and construct R3-Skill, a bilingual (Chinese-English) skill retrieval benchmark targeting realistic agent skill routing. R3-Skill spans four language directions, features query phrasings close to real user requests, and is verified through multi-expert cross-checking. On R3-Skill, we build a two-stage retrieval system (R3-Embedding + R3-Reranker) with skill compatibility as an explicit training signal. Gradient analysis shows that the "push-away" signal is diluted by bilateral balancing in the bi-encoder but acts as lossless graded ranking supervision in the cross-encoder -- motivating its placement at the cross-encoder stage, as confirmed by ablations on two datasets. The R3-Embedding + R3-Reranker pipeline attains Hit@1 = 0.7714, NDCG@10 = 0.8327 and Set-Compat = 0.3525 on R3-Skill. The dataset, training code and model weights are released as open source for agent skill routing.

Cause-and-Effect Analysis of ADAS: A Comparison Study between Literature Review and Complaint DataJackie Ayoub, Zifei Wang, Meitang Li et al.
Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) are designed to improve vehicle safety. However, it is difficult to achieve such benefits without understanding the causes and limitations of the current ADAS and their possible solutions. This study 1) investigated the limitations and solutions of ADAS through a literature review, 2) identified the causes and effects of ADAS through consumer complaints using natural language processing models, and 3) compared the major differences between the two. These two lines of research identified similar categories of ADAS causes, including human factors, environmental factors, and vehicle factors. However, academic research focused more on human factors of ADAS issues and proposed advanced algorithms to mitigate such issues while drivers complained more of vehicle factors of ADAS failures, which led to associated top consequences. The findings from these two sources tend to complement each other and provide important implications for the improvement of ADAS in the future.

From Narratives to Probabilistic Reasoning: Predicting and Interpreting Drivers' Hazardous Actions in Crashes Using Large Language ModelBoyou Chen, Gerui Xu, Zifei Wang et al.
Vehicle crashes involve complex interactions between road users, split-second decisions, and challenging environmental conditions. Among these, two-vehicle crashes are the most prevalent, accounting for approximately 70% of roadway crashes and posing a significant challenge to traffic safety. Identifying Driver Hazardous Action (DHA) is essential for understanding crash causation, yet the reliability of DHA data in large-scale databases is limited by inconsistent and labor-intensive manual coding practices. Here, we present an innovative framework that leverages a fine-tuned large language model to automatically infer DHAs from textual crash narratives, thereby improving the validity and interpretability of DHA classifications. Using five years of two-vehicle crash data from MTCF, we fine-tuned the Llama 3.2 1B model on detailed crash narratives and benchmarked its performance against conventional machine learning classifiers, including Random Forest, XGBoost, CatBoost, and a neural network. The fine-tuned LLM achieved an overall accuracy of 80%, surpassing all baseline models and demonstrating pronounced improvements in scenarios with imbalanced data. To increase interpretability, we developed a probabilistic reasoning approach, analyzing model output shifts across original test sets and three targeted counterfactual scenarios: variations in driver distraction and age. Our analysis revealed that introducing distraction for one driver substantially increased the likelihood of "General Unsafe Driving"; distraction for both drivers maximized the probability of "Both Drivers Took Hazardous Actions"; and assigning a teen driver markedly elevated the probability of "Speed and Stopping Violations." Our framework and analytical methods provide a robust and interpretable solution for large-scale automated DHA detection, offering new opportunities for traffic safety analysis and intervention.

4D-MISR: A unified model for low-dose super-resolution imaging via feature fusionZifei Wang, Zian Mao, Xiaoya He et al.
While electron microscopy offers crucial atomic-resolution insights into structure-property relationships, radiation damage severely limits its use on beam-sensitive materials like proteins and 2D materials. To overcome this challenge, we push beyond the electron dose limits of conventional electron microscopy by adapting principles from multi-image super-resolution (MISR) that have been widely used in remote sensing. Our method fuses multiple low-resolution, sub-pixel-shifted views and enhances the reconstruction with a convolutional neural network (CNN) that integrates features from synthetic, multi-angle observations. We developed a dual-path, attention-guided network for 4D-STEM that achieves atomic-scale super-resolution from ultra-low-dose data. This provides robust atomic-scale visualization across amorphous, semi-crystalline, and crystalline beam-sensitive specimens. Systematic evaluations on representative materials demonstrate comparable spatial resolution to conventional ptychography under ultra-low-dose conditions. Our work expands the capabilities of 4D-STEM, offering a new and generalizable method for the structural analysis of radiation-vulnerable materials.
