Wide & Deep Learning for Judging Student Performance in Online One-on-one Math ClassesJiahao Chen, Zitao Liu, Weiqi Luo
In this paper, we investigate the opportunities of automating the judgment process in online one-on-one math classes. We build a Wide & Deep framework to learn fine-grained predictive representations from a limited amount of noisy classroom conversation data that perform better student judgments. We conducted experiments on the task of predicting students' levels of mastery of example questions and the results demonstrate the superiority and availability of our model in terms of various evaluation metrics.

NeRF-HuGS: Improved Neural Radiance Fields in Non-static Scenes Using Heuristics-Guided SegmentationJiahao Chen, Yipeng Qin, Lingjie Liu et al.
Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) has been widely recognized for its excellence in novel view synthesis and 3D scene reconstruction. However, their effectiveness is inherently tied to the assumption of static scenes, rendering them susceptible to undesirable artifacts when confronted with transient distractors such as moving objects or shadows. In this work, we propose a novel paradigm, namely "Heuristics-Guided Segmentation" (HuGS), which significantly enhances the separation of static scenes from transient distractors by harmoniously combining the strengths of hand-crafted heuristics and state-of-the-art segmentation models, thus significantly transcending the limitations of previous solutions. Furthermore, we delve into the meticulous design of heuristics, introducing a seamless fusion of Structure-from-Motion (SfM)-based heuristics and color residual heuristics, catering to a diverse range of texture profiles. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superiority and robustness of our method in mitigating transient distractors for NeRFs trained in non-static scenes. EgoSplat: Open-Vocabulary Egocentric Scene Understanding with Language Embedded 3D Gaussian SplattingDi Li, Jie Feng, Jiahao Chen et al.
Egocentric scenes exhibit frequent occlusions, varied viewpoints, and dynamic interactions compared to typical scene understanding tasks. Occlusions and varied viewpoints can lead to multi-view semantic inconsistencies, while dynamic objects may act as transient distractors, introducing artifacts into semantic feature modeling. To address these challenges, we propose EgoSplat, a language-embedded 3D Gaussian Splatting framework for open-vocabulary egocentric scene understanding. A multi-view consistent instance feature aggregation method is designed to leverage the segmentation and tracking capabilities of SAM2 to selectively aggregate complementary features across views for each instance, ensuring precise semantic representation of scenes. Additionally, an instance-aware spatial-temporal transient prediction module is constructed to improve spatial integrity and temporal continuity in predictions by incorporating spatial-temporal associations across multi-view instances, effectively reducing artifacts in the semantic reconstruction of egocentric scenes. EgoSplat achieves state-of-the-art performance in both localization and segmentation tasks on two datasets, outperforming existing methods with a 8.2% improvement in localization accuracy and a 3.7% improvement in segmentation mIoU on the ADT dataset, and setting a new benchmark in open-vocabulary egocentric scene understanding. The code will be made publicly available.

3D Correspondence Grouping with Compatibility FeaturesJiaqi Yang, Jiahao Chen, Zhiqiang Huang et al.
We present a simple yet effective method for 3D correspondence grouping. The objective is to accurately classify initial correspondences obtained by matching local geometric descriptors into inliers and outliers. Although the spatial distribution of correspondences is irregular, inliers are expected to be geometrically compatible with each other. Based on such observation, we propose a novel representation for 3D correspondences, dubbed compatibility feature (CF), to describe the consistencies within inliers and inconsistencies within outliers. CF consists of top-ranked compatibility scores of a candidate to other correspondences, which purely relies on robust and rotation-invariant geometric constraints. We then formulate the grouping problem as a classification problem for CF features, which is accomplished via a simple multilayer perceptron (MLP) network. Comparisons with nine state-of-the-art methods on four benchmarks demonstrate that: 1) CF is distinctive, robust, and rotation-invariant; 2) our CF-based method achieves the best overall performance and holds good generalization ability.
Boundary Learning by Using Weighted Propagation in Convolution NetworkWei Liu, Jiahao Chen, Chuni Liu et al.
In material science, image segmentation is of great significance for quantitative analysis of microstructures. Here, we propose a novel Weighted Propagation Convolution Neural Network based on U-Net (WPU-Net) to detect boundary in poly-crystalline microscopic images. We introduce spatial consistency into network to eliminate the defects in raw microscopic image. And we customize adaptive boundary weight for each pixel in each grain, so that it leads the network to preserve grain's geometric and topological characteristics. Moreover, we provide our dataset with the goal of advancing the development of image processing in materials science. Experiments demonstrate that the proposed method achieves promising performance in both of objective and subjective assessment. In boundary detection task, it reduces the error rate by 7\%, which outperforms state-of-the-art methods by a large margin.

Biologically inspired model simulating visual pathways and cerebellum function in human - Achieving visuomotor coordination and high precision movement with learning abilityWei Wu, Hong Qiao, Jiahao Chen et al.
In recent years, the interdisciplinary research between information science and neuroscience has been a hotspot. In this paper, based on recent biological findings, we proposed a new model to mimic visual information processing, motor planning and control in central and peripheral nervous systems of human. Main steps of the model are as follows: 1) Simulating "where" pathway in human: the Selective Search method is applied to simulate the function of human dorsal visual pathway to localize object candidates; 2) Simulating "what" pathway in human: a Convolutional Deep Belief Network is applied to simulate the hierarchical structure and function of human ventral visual pathway for object recognition; 3) Simulating motor planning process in human: habitual motion planning process in human is simulated, and motor commands are generated from the combination of control signals from past experiences; 4) Simulating precise movement control in human: calibrated control signals, which mimic the adjustment for movement from cerebellum in human, are generated and updated from calibration of movement errors in past experiences, and sent to the movement model to achieve high precision. The proposed framework mimics structures and functions of human recognition, visuomotor coordination and precise motor control. Experiments on object localization, recognition and movement control demonstrate that the new proposed model can not only accomplish visuomotor coordination tasks, but also achieve high precision movement with learning ability. Meanwhile, the results also prove the validity of the introduced mechanisms. Furthermore, the proposed model could be generalized and applied to other systems, such as mechanical and electrical systems in robotics, to achieve fast response, high precision movement with learning ability.
