Saliency-based Multiple Region of Interest Detection from a Single 360° image

360° images are informative -- it contains omnidirectional visual information around the camera. However, the areas that cover a 360° image is much larger than the human's field of view, therefore important information in different view directions is easily overlooked. To tackle this issue, we propose a method for predicting the optimal set of Region of Interest (RoI) from a single 360° image using the visual saliency as a clue. To deal with the scarce, strongly biased training data of existing single 360° image saliency prediction dataset, we also propose a data augmentation method based on the spherical random data rotation. From the predicted saliency map and redundant candidate regions, we obtain the optimal set of RoIs considering both the saliency within a region and the Interaction-Over-Union (IoU) between regions. We conduct the subjective evaluation to show that the proposed method can select regions that properly summarize the input 360° image.

Non-uniform Sampling Strategies for NeRF on 360{\textdegree} images

In recent years, the performance of novel view synthesis using perspective images has dramatically improved with the advent of neural radiance fields (NeRF). This study proposes two novel techniques that effectively build NeRF for 360{\textdegree} omnidirectional images. Due to the characteristics of a 360{\textdegree} image of ERP format that has spatial distortion in their high latitude regions and a 360{\textdegree} wide viewing angle, NeRF's general ray sampling strategy is ineffective. Hence, the view synthesis accuracy of NeRF is limited and learning is not efficient. We propose two non-uniform ray sampling schemes for NeRF to suit 360{\textdegree} images - distortion-aware ray sampling and content-aware ray sampling. We created an evaluation dataset Synth360 using Replica and SceneCity models of indoor and outdoor scenes, respectively. In experiments, we show that our proposal successfully builds 360{\textdegree} image NeRF in terms of both accuracy and efficiency. The proposal is widely applicable to advanced variants of NeRF. DietNeRF, AugNeRF, and NeRF++ combined with the proposed techniques further improve the performance. Scalable, Detailed and Mask-Free Universal Photometric Stereo

In this paper, we introduce SDM-UniPS, a groundbreaking Scalable, Detailed, Mask-free, and Universal Photometric Stereo network. Our approach can recover astonishingly intricate surface normal maps, rivaling the quality of 3D scanners, even when images are captured under unknown, spatially-varying lighting conditions in uncontrolled environments. We have extended previous universal photometric stereo networks to extract spatial-light features, utilizing all available information in high-resolution input images and accounting for non-local interactions among surface points. Moreover, we present a new synthetic training dataset that encompasses a diverse range of shapes, materials, and illumination scenarios found in real-world scenes. Through extensive evaluation, we demonstrate that our method not only surpasses calibrated, lighting-specific techniques on public benchmarks, but also excels with a significantly smaller number of input images even without object masks.

Intersection Prediction from Single 360° Image via Deep Detection of Possible Direction of Travel

Movie-Map, an interactive first-person-view map that engages the user in a simulated walking experience, comprises short 360° video segments separated by traffic intersections that are seamlessly connected according to the viewer's direction of travel. However, in wide urban-scale areas with numerous intersecting roads, manual intersection segmentation requires significant human effort. Therefore, automatic identification of intersections from 360° videos is an important problem for scaling up Movie-Map. In this paper, we propose a novel method that identifies an intersection from individual frames in 360° videos. Instead of formulating the intersection identification as a standard binary classification task with a 360° image as input, we identify an intersection based on the number of the possible directions of travel (PDoT) in perspective images projected in eight directions from a single 360° image detected by the neural network for handling various types of intersections. We constructed a large-scale 360° Image Intersection Identification (iii360) dataset for training and evaluation where 360° videos were collected from various areas such as school campus, downtown, suburb, and china town and demonstrate that our PDoT-based method achieves 88\% accuracy, which is significantly better than that achieved by the direct naive binary classification based method. The source codes and a partial dataset will be shared in the community after the paper is published.

PS-Transformer: Learning Sparse Photometric Stereo Network using Self-Attention Mechanism

Existing deep calibrated photometric stereo networks basically aggregate observations under different lights based on the pre-defined operations such as linear projection and max pooling. While they are effective with the dense capture, simple first-order operations often fail to capture the high-order interactions among observations under small number of different lights. To tackle this issue, this paper presents a deep sparse calibrated photometric stereo network named {\it PS-Transformer} which leverages the learnable self-attention mechanism to properly capture the complex inter-image interactions. PS-Transformer builds upon the dual-branch design to explore both pixel-wise and image-wise features and individual feature is trained with the intermediate surface normal supervision to maximize geometric feasibility. A new synthetic dataset named CyclesPS+ is also presented with the comprehensive analysis to successfully train the photometric stereo networks. Extensive results on the publicly available benchmark datasets demonstrate that the surface normal prediction accuracy of the proposed method significantly outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms with the same number of input images and is even comparable to that of dense algorithms which input 10$\times$ larger number of images.

Universal Photometric Stereo Network using Global Lighting Contexts

This paper tackles a new photometric stereo task, named universal photometric stereo. Unlike existing tasks that assumed specific physical lighting models; hence, drastically limited their usability, a solution algorithm of this task is supposed to work for objects with diverse shapes and materials under arbitrary lighting variations without assuming any specific models. To solve this extremely challenging task, we present a purely data-driven method, which eliminates the prior assumption of lighting by replacing the recovery of physical lighting parameters with the extraction of the generic lighting representation, named global lighting contexts. We use them like lighting parameters in a calibrated photometric stereo network to recover surface normal vectors pixelwisely. To adapt our network to a wide variety of shapes, materials and lightings, it is trained on a new synthetic dataset which simulates the appearance of objects in the wild. Our method is compared with other state-of-the-art uncalibrated photometric stereo methods on our test data to demonstrate the significance of our method.

Teacher-Guided Routing for Sparse Vision Mixture-of-Experts

Recent progress in deep learning has been driven by increasingly large-scale models, but the resulting computational cost has become a critical bottleneck. Sparse Mixture of Experts (MoE) offers an effective solution by activating only a small subset of experts for each input, achieving high scalability without sacrificing inference speed. Although effective, sparse MoE training exhibits characteristic optimization difficulties. Because the router receives informative gradients only through the experts selected in the forward pass, it suffers from gradient blocking and obtains little information from unselected routes. This limited, highly localized feedback makes it difficult for the router to learn appropriate expert-selection scores and often leads to unstable routing dynamics, such as fluctuating expert assignments during training. To address this issue, we propose TGR-MoE: Teacher-Guided Routing for Sparse Vision Mixture-of-Experts, a simple yet effective method that stabilizes router learning using supervision derived from a pretrained dense teacher model. TGR-MoE constructs a teacher router from the teacher's intermediate representations and uses its routing outputs as pseudo-supervision for the student router, suppressing frequent routing fluctuations during training and enabling knowledge-guided expert selection from the early stages of training. Extensive experiments on ImageNet-1K and CIFAR-100 demonstrate that TGR consistently improves both accuracy and routing consistency, while maintaining stable training even under highly sparse configurations.

MERLiN: Single-Shot Material Estimation and Relighting for Photometric Stereo

Photometric stereo typically demands intricate data acquisition setups involving multiple light sources to recover surface normals accurately. In this paper, we propose MERLiN, an attention-based hourglass network that integrates single image-based inverse rendering and relighting within a single unified framework. We evaluate the performance of photometric stereo methods using these relit images and demonstrate how they can circumvent the underlying challenge of complex data acquisition. Our physically-based model is trained on a large synthetic dataset containing complex shapes with spatially varying BRDF and is designed to handle indirect illumination effects to improve material reconstruction and relighting. Through extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluation, we demonstrate that the proposed framework generalizes well to real-world images, achieving high-quality shape, material estimation, and relighting. We assess these synthetically relit images over photometric stereo benchmark methods for their physical correctness and resulting normal estimation accuracy, paving the way towards single-shot photometric stereo through physically-based relighting. This work allows us to address the single image-based inverse rendering problem holistically, applying well to both synthetic and real data and taking a step towards mitigating the challenge of data acquisition in photometric stereo.

What-Where Transformer: A Slot-Centric Visual Backbone for Concurrent Representation and Localization

Many image understanding tasks involve identifying what is present and where it appears. However, tasks that address where, such as object discovery, detection, and segmentation, are often considerably more complex than image classification, which primarily focuses on what. One possible reason is that classification-oriented backbones tend to emphasize semantic information about what, while implicitly entangling or suppressing information about where. In this work, we focus on an inductive bias termed what-where separation, which encourages models to represent object appearance and spatial location in a decomposed manner. To incorporate this bias throughout an attentive backbone in the style of Vision Transformer (ViT), we propose the What-Where Transformer (WWT). Our method introduces two key novel designs: (1) it treats tokens as representations of what and attention maps as representations of where, and processes them in concurrent feed-forward modules via a multi-stream, slot-based architecture; (2) it reuses both the final-layer tokens and attention maps for downstream tasks, and directly exposes them to gradients derived from task losses, thereby facilitating more effective and explicit learning of localization. We demonstrate that even under standard single-label classification-based supervision on ImageNet, WWT exhibits emergent multiple object discovery directly from raw attention maps, rather than via additional postprocessing such as token clustering. Furthermore, WWT achieves superior performance compared to ViT-based methods on zero-shot object discovery and weakly supervised semantic segmentation, and it is transferable to various localization setups with minimal modifications. Entity-NeRF: Detecting and Removing Moving Entities in Urban Scenes

Recent advancements in the study of Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) for dynamic scenes often involve explicit modeling of scene dynamics. However, this approach faces challenges in modeling scene dynamics in urban environments, where moving objects of various categories and scales are present. In such settings, it becomes crucial to effectively eliminate moving objects to accurately reconstruct static backgrounds. Our research introduces an innovative method, termed here as Entity-NeRF, which combines the strengths of knowledge-based and statistical strategies. This approach utilizes entity-wise statistics, leveraging entity segmentation and stationary entity classification through thing/stuff segmentation. To assess our methodology, we created an urban scene dataset masked with moving objects. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate that Entity-NeRF notably outperforms existing techniques in removing moving objects and reconstructing static urban backgrounds, both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Light of Normals: Unified Feature Representation for Universal Photometric Stereo

Universal photometric stereo (PS) is defined by two factors: it must (i) operate under arbitrary, unknown lighting conditions and (ii) avoid reliance on specific illumination models. Despite progress (e.g., SDM UniPS), two challenges remain. First, current encoders cannot guarantee that illumination and normal information are decoupled. To enforce decoupling, we introduce LINO UniPS with two key components: (i) Light Register Tokens with light alignment supervision to aggregate point, direction, and environment lights; (ii) Interleaved Attention Block featuring global cross-image attention that takes all lighting conditions together so the encoder can factor out lighting while retaining normal-related evidence. Second, high-frequency geometric details are easily lost. We address this with (i) a Wavelet-based Dual-branch Architecture and (ii) a Normal-gradient Perception Loss. These techniques yield a unified feature space in which lighting is explicitly represented by register tokens, while normal details are preserved via wavelet branch. We further introduce PS-Verse, a large-scale synthetic dataset graded by geometric complexity and lighting diversity, and adopt curriculum training from simple to complex scenes. Extensive experiments show new state-of-the-art results on public benchmarks (e.g., DiLiGenT, Luces), stronger generalization to real materials, and improved efficiency; ablations confirm that Light Register Tokens + Interleaved Attention Block drive better feature decoupling, while Wavelet-based Dual-branch Architecture + Normal-gradient Perception Loss recover finer details.

Physics-Free Spectrally Multiplexed Photometric Stereo under Unknown Spectral Composition

In this paper, we present a groundbreaking spectrally multiplexed photometric stereo approach for recovering surface normals of dynamic surfaces without the need for calibrated lighting or sensors, a notable advancement in the field traditionally hindered by stringent prerequisites and spectral ambiguity. By embracing spectral ambiguity as an advantage, our technique enables the generation of training data without specialized multispectral rendering frameworks. We introduce a unique, physics-free network architecture, SpectraM-PS, that effectively processes multiplexed images to determine surface normals across a wide range of conditions and material types, without relying on specific physically-based knowledge. Additionally, we establish the first benchmark dataset, SpectraM14, for spectrally multiplexed photometric stereo, facilitating comprehensive evaluations against existing calibrated methods. Our contributions significantly enhance the capabilities for dynamic surface recovery, particularly in uncalibrated setups, marking a pivotal step forward in the application of photometric stereo across various domains.

Rectified Lagrangian for Out-of-Distribution Detection in Modern Hopfield Networks

Modern Hopfield networks (MHNs) have recently gained significant attention in the field of artificial intelligence because they can store and retrieve a large set of patterns with an exponentially large memory capacity. A MHN is generally a dynamical system defined with Lagrangians of memory and feature neurons, where memories associated with in-distribution (ID) samples are represented by attractors in the feature space. One major problem in existing MHNs lies in managing out-of-distribution (OOD) samples because it was originally assumed that all samples are ID samples. To address this, we propose the rectified Lagrangian (RegLag), a new Lagrangian for memory neurons that explicitly incorporates an attractor for OOD samples in the dynamical system of MHNs. RecLag creates a trivial point attractor for any interaction matrix, enabling OOD detection by identifying samples that fall into this attractor as OOD. The interaction matrix is optimized so that the probability densities can be estimated to identify ID/OOD. We demonstrate the effectiveness of RecLag-based MHNs compared to energy-based OOD detection methods, including those using state-of-the-art Hopfield energies, across nine image datasets.

GUMBEL-NERF: Representing Unseen Objects as Part-Compositional Neural Radiance Fields

We propose Gumbel-NeRF, a mixture-of-expert (MoE) neural radiance fields (NeRF) model with a hindsight expert selection mechanism for synthesizing novel views of unseen objects. Previous studies have shown that the MoE structure provides high-quality representations of a given large-scale scene consisting of many objects. However, we observe that such a MoE NeRF model often produces low-quality representations in the vicinity of experts' boundaries when applied to the task of novel view synthesis of an unseen object from one/few-shot input. We find that this deterioration is primarily caused by the foresight expert selection mechanism, which may leave an unnatural discontinuity in the object shape near the experts' boundaries. Gumbel-NeRF adopts a hindsight expert selection mechanism, which guarantees continuity in the density field even near the experts' boundaries. Experiments using the SRN cars dataset demonstrate the superiority of Gumbel-NeRF over the baselines in terms of various image quality metrics.

High-Fidelity 3D Tooth Reconstruction by Fusing Intraoral Scans and CBCT Data via a Deep Implicit Representation

High-fidelity 3D tooth models are essential for digital dentistry, but must capture both the detailed crown and the complete root. Clinical imaging modalities are limited: Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) captures the root but has a noisy, low-resolution crown, while Intraoral Scanners (IOS) provide a high-fidelity crown but no root information. A naive fusion of these sources results in unnatural seams and artifacts. We propose a novel, fully-automated pipeline that fuses CBCT and IOS data using a deep implicit representation. Our method first segments and robustly registers the tooth instances, then creates a hybrid proxy mesh combining the IOS crown and the CBCT root. The core of our approach is to use this noisy proxy to guide a class-specific DeepSDF network. This optimization process projects the input onto a learned manifold of ideal tooth shapes, generating a seamless, watertight, and anatomically coherent model. Qualitative and quantitative evaluations show our method uniquely preserves both the high-fidelity crown from IOS and the patient-specific root morphology from CBCT, overcoming the limitations of each modality and naive stitching.

Geometry Meets Light: Leveraging Geometric Priors for Universal Photometric Stereo under Limited Multi-Illumination Cues

Universal Photometric Stereo is a promising approach for recovering surface normals without strict lighting assumptions. However, it struggles when multi-illumination cues are unreliable, such as under biased lighting or in shadows or self-occluded regions of complex in-the-wild scenes. We propose GeoUniPS, a universal photometric stereo network that integrates synthetic supervision with high-level geometric priors from large-scale 3D reconstruction models pretrained on massive in-the-wild data. Our key insight is that these 3D reconstruction models serve as visual-geometry foundation models, inherently encoding rich geometric knowledge of real scenes. To leverage this, we design a Light-Geometry Dual-Branch Encoder that extracts both multi-illumination cues and geometric priors from the frozen 3D reconstruction model. We also address the limitations of the conventional orthographic projection assumption by introducing the PS-Perp dataset with realistic perspective projection to enable learning of spatially varying view directions. Extensive experiments demonstrate that GeoUniPS delivers state-of-the-arts performance across multiple datasets, both quantitatively and qualitatively, especially in the complex in-the-wild scenes.

PerFace: Metric Learning in Perceptual Facial Similarity for Enhanced Face Anonymization

In response to rising societal awareness of privacy concerns, face anonymization techniques have advanced, including the emergence of face-swapping methods that replace one identity with another. Achieving a balance between anonymity and naturalness in face swapping requires careful selection of identities: overly similar faces compromise anonymity, while dissimilar ones reduce naturalness. Existing models, however, focus on binary identity classification "the same person or not", making it difficult to measure nuanced similarities such as "completely different" versus "highly similar but different." This paper proposes a human-perception-based face similarity metric, creating a dataset of 6,400 triplet annotations and metric learning to predict the similarity. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in both face similarity prediction and attribute-based face classification tasks over existing methods.

PINO: Person-Interaction Noise Optimization for Long-Duration and Customizable Motion Generation of Arbitrary-Sized Groups

Generating realistic group interactions involving multiple characters remains challenging due to increasing complexity as group size expands. While existing conditional diffusion models incrementally generate motions by conditioning on previously generated characters, they rely on single shared prompts, limiting nuanced control and leading to overly simplified interactions. In this paper, we introduce Person-Interaction Noise Optimization (PINO), a novel, training-free framework designed for generating realistic and customizable interactions among groups of arbitrary size. PINO decomposes complex group interactions into semantically relevant pairwise interactions, and leverages pretrained two-person interaction diffusion models to incrementally compose group interactions. To ensure physical plausibility and avoid common artifacts such as overlapping or penetration between characters, PINO employs physics-based penalties during noise optimization. This approach allows precise user control over character orientation, speed, and spatial relationships without additional training. Comprehensive evaluations demonstrate that PINO generates visually realistic, physically coherent, and adaptable multi-person interactions suitable for diverse animation, gaming, and robotics applications.

PS-EIP: Robust Photometric Stereo Based on Event Interval Profile

Recently, the energy-efficient photometric stereo method using an event camera has been proposed to recover surface normals from events triggered by changes in logarithmic Lambertian reflections under a moving directional light source. However, EventPS treats each event interval independently, making it sensitive to noise, shadows, and non-Lambertian reflections. This paper proposes Photometric Stereo based on Event Interval Profile (PS-EIP), a robust method that recovers pixelwise surface normals from a time-series profile of event intervals. By exploiting the continuity of the profile and introducing an outlier detection method based on profile shape, our approach enhances robustness against outliers from shadows and specular reflections. Experiments using real event data from 3D-printed objects demonstrate that PS-EIP significantly improves robustness to outliers compared to EventPS's deep-learning variant, EventPS-FCN, without relying on deep learning.

Field-of-View IoU for Object Detection in 360° Images

360° cameras have gained popularity over the last few years. In this paper, we propose two fundamental techniques -- Field-of-View IoU (FoV-IoU) and 360Augmentation for object detection in 360° images. Although most object detection neural networks designed for the perspective images are applicable to 360° images in equirectangular projection (ERP) format, their performance deteriorates owing to the distortion in ERP images. Our method can be readily integrated with existing perspective object detectors and significantly improves the performance. The FoV-IoU computes the intersection-over-union of two Field-of-View bounding boxes in a spherical image which could be used for training, inference, and evaluation while 360Augmentation is a data augmentation technique specific to 360° object detection task which randomly rotates a spherical image and solves the bias due to the sphere-to-plane projection. We conduct extensive experiments on the 360indoor dataset with different types of perspective object detectors and show the consistent effectiveness of our method.

CNN-PS: CNN-based Photometric Stereo for General Non-Convex Surfaces

Most conventional photometric stereo algorithms inversely solve a BRDF-based image formation model. However, the actual imaging process is often far more complex due to the global light transport on the non-convex surfaces. This paper presents a photometric stereo network that directly learns relationships between the photometric stereo input and surface normals of a scene. For handling unordered, arbitrary number of input images, we merge all the input data to the intermediate representation called {\it observation map} that has a fixed shape, is able to be fed into a CNN. To improve both training and prediction, we take into account the rotational pseudo-invariance of the observation map that is derived from the isotropic constraint. For training the network, we create a synthetic photometric stereo dataset that is generated by a physics-based renderer, therefore the global light transport is considered. Our experimental results on both synthetic and real datasets show that our method outperforms conventional BRDF-based photometric stereo algorithms especially when scenes are highly non-convex.

Scale Drift Correction of Camera Geo-Localization using Geo-Tagged Images

Camera geo-localization from a monocular video is a fundamental task for video analysis and autonomous navigation. Although 3D reconstruction is a key technique to obtain camera poses, monocular 3D reconstruction in a large environment tends to result in the accumulation of errors in rotation, translation, and especially in scale: a problem known as scale drift. To overcome these errors, we propose a novel framework that integrates incremental structure from motion (SfM) and a scale drift correction method utilizing geo-tagged images, such as those provided by Google Street View. Our correction method begins by obtaining sparse 6-DoF correspondences between the reconstructed 3D map coordinate system and the world coordinate system, by using geo-tagged images. Then, it corrects scale drift by applying pose graph optimization over Sim(3) constraints and bundle adjustment. Experimental evaluations on large-scale datasets show that the proposed framework not only sufficiently corrects scale drift, but also achieves accurate geo-localization in a kilometer-scale environment.

Panoramic Structure from Motion via Geometric Relationship Detection

This paper addresses the problem of Structure from Motion (SfM) for indoor panoramic image streams, extremely challenging even for the state-of-the-art due to the lack of textures and minimal parallax. The key idea is the fusion of single-view and multi-view reconstruction techniques via geometric relationship detection (e.g., detecting 2D lines as coplanar in 3D). Rough geometry suffices to perform such detection, and our approach utilizes rough surface normal estimates from an image-to-normal deep network to discover geometric relationships among lines. The detected relationships provide exact geometric constraints in our line-based linear SfM formulation. A constrained linear least squares is used to reconstruct a 3D model and camera motions, followed by the bundle adjustment. We have validated our algorithm on challenging datasets, outperforming various state-of-the-art reconstruction techniques.
