Vision-Language Models for Vision Tasks: A Survey

Most visual recognition studies rely heavily on crowd-labelled data in deep neural networks (DNNs) training, and they usually train a DNN for each single visual recognition task, leading to a laborious and time-consuming visual recognition paradigm. To address the two challenges, Vision-Language Models (VLMs) have been intensively investigated recently, which learns rich vision-language correlation from web-scale image-text pairs that are almost infinitely available on the Internet and enables zero-shot predictions on various visual recognition tasks with a single VLM. This paper provides a systematic review of visual language models for various visual recognition tasks, including: (1) the background that introduces the development of visual recognition paradigms; (2) the foundations of VLM that summarize the widely-adopted network architectures, pre-training objectives, and downstream tasks; (3) the widely-adopted datasets in VLM pre-training and evaluations; (4) the review and categorization of existing VLM pre-training methods, VLM transfer learning methods, and VLM knowledge distillation methods; (5) the benchmarking, analysis and discussion of the reviewed methods; (6) several research challenges and potential research directions that could be pursued in the future VLM studies for visual recognition. Automating DBSCAN via Deep Reinforcement Learning

DBSCAN is widely used in many scientific and engineering fields because of its simplicity and practicality. However, due to its high sensitivity parameters, the accuracy of the clustering result depends heavily on practical experience. In this paper, we first propose a novel Deep Reinforcement Learning guided automatic DBSCAN parameters search framework, namely DRL-DBSCAN. The framework models the process of adjusting the parameter search direction by perceiving the clustering environment as a Markov decision process, which aims to find the best clustering parameters without manual assistance. DRL-DBSCAN learns the optimal clustering parameter search policy for different feature distributions via interacting with the clusters, using a weakly-supervised reward training policy network. In addition, we also present a recursive search mechanism driven by the scale of the data to efficiently and controllably process large parameter spaces. Extensive experiments are conducted on five artificial and real-world datasets based on the proposed four working modes. The results of offline and online tasks show that the DRL-DBSCAN not only consistently improves DBSCAN clustering accuracy by up to 26% and 25% respectively, but also can stably find the dominant parameters with high computational efficiency. Indescribable Multi-modal Spatial Evaluator

Multi-modal image registration spatially aligns two images with different distributions. One of its major challenges is that images acquired from different imaging machines have different imaging distributions, making it difficult to focus only on the spatial aspect of the images and ignore differences in distributions. In this study, we developed a self-supervised approach, Indescribable Multi-model Spatial Evaluator (IMSE), to address multi-modal image registration. IMSE creates an accurate multi-modal spatial evaluator to measure spatial differences between two images, and then optimizes registration by minimizing the error predicted of the evaluator. To optimize IMSE performance, we also proposed a new style enhancement method called Shuffle Remap which randomizes the image distribution into multiple segments, and then randomly disorders and remaps these segments, so that the distribution of the original image is changed. Shuffle Remap can help IMSE to predict the difference in spatial location from unseen target distributions. Our results show that IMSE outperformed the existing methods for registration using T1-T2 and CT-MRI datasets. IMSE also can be easily integrated into the traditional registration process, and can provide a convenient way to evaluate and visualize registration results. Towards Efficient Use of Multi-Scale Features in Transformer-Based Object Detectors

Multi-scale features have been proven highly effective for object detection but often come with huge and even prohibitive extra computation costs, especially for the recent Transformer-based detectors. In this paper, we propose Iterative Multi-scale Feature Aggregation (IMFA) -- a generic paradigm that enables efficient use of multi-scale features in Transformer-based object detectors. The core idea is to exploit sparse multi-scale features from just a few crucial locations, and it is achieved with two novel designs. First, IMFA rearranges the Transformer encoder-decoder pipeline so that the encoded features can be iteratively updated based on the detection predictions. Second, IMFA sparsely samples scale-adaptive features for refined detection from just a few keypoint locations under the guidance of prior detection predictions. As a result, the sampled multi-scale features are sparse yet still highly beneficial for object detection. Extensive experiments show that the proposed IMFA boosts the performance of multiple Transformer-based object detectors significantly yet with only slight computational overhead.

Generalizable Black-Box Adversarial Attack with Meta Learning

In the scenario of black-box adversarial attack, the target model's parameters are unknown, and the attacker aims to find a successful adversarial perturbation based on query feedback under a query budget. Due to the limited feedback information, existing query-based black-box attack methods often require many queries for attacking each benign example. To reduce query cost, we propose to utilize the feedback information across historical attacks, dubbed example-level adversarial transferability. Specifically, by treating the attack on each benign example as one task, we develop a meta-learning framework by training a meta-generator to produce perturbations conditioned on benign examples. When attacking a new benign example, the meta generator can be quickly fine-tuned based on the feedback information of the new task as well as a few historical attacks to produce effective perturbations. Moreover, since the meta-train procedure consumes many queries to learn a generalizable generator, we utilize model-level adversarial transferability to train the meta-generator on a white-box surrogate model, then transfer it to help the attack against the target model. The proposed framework with the two types of adversarial transferability can be naturally combined with any off-the-shelf query-based attack methods to boost their performance, which is verified by extensive experiments.

MM-DeepResearch: A Simple and Effective Multimodal Agentic Search Baseline

We aim to develop a multimodal research agent capable of explicit reasoning and planning, multi-tool invocation, and cross-modal information synthesis, enabling it to conduct deep research tasks. However, we observe three main challenges in developing such agents: (1) scarcity of search-intensive multimodal QA data, (2) lack of effective search trajectories, and (3) prohibitive cost of training with online search APIs. To tackle them, we first propose Hyper-Search, a hypergraph-based QA generation method that models and connects visual and textual nodes within and across modalities, enabling to generate search-intensive multimodal QA pairs that require invoking various search tools to solve. Second, we introduce DR-TTS, which first decomposes search-involved tasks into several categories according to search tool types, and respectively optimize specialized search tool experts for each tool. It then recomposes tool experts to jointly explore search trajectories via tree search, producing trajectories that successfully solve complex tasks using various search tools. Third, we build an offline search engine supporting multiple search tools, enabling agentic reinforcement learning without using costly online search APIs. With the three designs, we develop MM-DeepResearch, a powerful multimodal deep research agent, and extensive results shows its superiority across benchmarks. UniDAformer: Unified Domain Adaptive Panoptic Segmentation Transformer via Hierarchical Mask Calibration

Domain adaptive panoptic segmentation aims to mitigate data annotation challenge by leveraging off-the-shelf annotated data in one or multiple related source domains. However, existing studies employ two separate networks for instance segmentation and semantic segmentation which lead to excessive network parameters as well as complicated and computationally intensive training and inference processes. We design UniDAformer, a unified domain adaptive panoptic segmentation transformer that is simple but can achieve domain adaptive instance segmentation and semantic segmentation simultaneously within a single network. UniDAformer introduces Hierarchical Mask Calibration (HMC) that rectifies inaccurate predictions at the level of regions, superpixels and pixels via online self-training on the fly. It has three unique features: 1) it enables unified domain adaptive panoptic adaptation; 2) it mitigates false predictions and improves domain adaptive panoptic segmentation effectively; 3) it is end-to-end trainable with a much simpler training and inference pipeline. Extensive experiments over multiple public benchmarks show that UniDAformer achieves superior domain adaptive panoptic segmentation as compared with the state-of-the-art.

LiDARCap: Long-range Marker-less 3D Human Motion Capture with LiDAR Point Clouds

Existing motion capture datasets are largely short-range and cannot yet fit the need of long-range applications. We propose LiDARHuman26M, a new human motion capture dataset captured by LiDAR at a much longer range to overcome this limitation. Our dataset also includes the ground truth human motions acquired by the IMU system and the synchronous RGB images. We further present a strong baseline method, LiDARCap, for LiDAR point cloud human motion capture. Specifically, we first utilize PointNet++ to encode features of points and then employ the inverse kinematics solver and SMPL optimizer to regress the pose through aggregating the temporally encoded features hierarchically. Quantitative and qualitative experiments show that our method outperforms the techniques based only on RGB images. Ablation experiments demonstrate that our dataset is challenging and worthy of further research. Finally, the experiments on the KITTI Dataset and the Waymo Open Dataset show that our method can be generalized to different LiDAR sensor settings.

Domain Adaptive Scene Text Detection via Subcategorization

Most existing scene text detectors require large-scale training data which cannot scale well due to two major factors: 1) scene text images often have domain-specific distributions; 2) collecting large-scale annotated scene text images is laborious. We study domain adaptive scene text detection, a largely neglected yet very meaningful task that aims for optimal transfer of labelled scene text images while handling unlabelled images in various new domains. Specifically, we design SCAST, a subcategory-aware self-training technique that mitigates the network overfitting and noisy pseudo labels in domain adaptive scene text detection effectively. SCAST consists of two novel designs. For labelled source data, it introduces pseudo subcategories for both foreground texts and background stuff which helps train more generalizable source models with multi-class detection objectives. For unlabelled target data, it mitigates the network overfitting by co-regularizing the binary and subcategory classifiers trained in the source domain. Extensive experiments show that SCAST achieves superior detection performance consistently across multiple public benchmarks, and it also generalizes well to other domain adaptive detection tasks such as vehicle detection.

A Survey on Evaluation of Multimodal Large Language Models

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) mimic human perception and reasoning system by integrating powerful Large Language Models (LLMs) with various modality encoders (e.g., vision, audio), positioning LLMs as the "brain" and various modality encoders as sensory organs. This framework endows MLLMs with human-like capabilities, and suggests a potential pathway towards achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). With the emergence of all-round MLLMs like GPT-4V and Gemini, a multitude of evaluation methods have been developed to assess their capabilities across different dimensions. This paper presents a systematic and comprehensive review of MLLM evaluation methods, covering the following key aspects: (1) the background of MLLMs and their evaluation; (2) "what to evaluate" that reviews and categorizes existing MLLM evaluation tasks based on the capabilities assessed, including general multimodal recognition, perception, reasoning and trustworthiness, and domain-specific applications such as socioeconomic, natural sciences and engineering, medical usage, AI agent, remote sensing, video and audio processing, 3D point cloud analysis, and others; (3) "where to evaluate" that summarizes MLLM evaluation benchmarks into general and specific benchmarks; (4) "how to evaluate" that reviews and illustrates MLLM evaluation steps and metrics; Our overarching goal is to provide valuable insights for researchers in the field of MLLM evaluation, thereby facilitating the development of more capable and reliable MLLMs. We emphasize that evaluation should be regarded as a critical discipline, essential for advancing the field of MLLMs.

Semantic-visual Guided Transformer for Few-shot Class-incremental Learning

Few-shot class-incremental learning (FSCIL) has recently attracted extensive attention in various areas. Existing FSCIL methods highly depend on the robustness of the feature backbone pre-trained on base classes. In recent years, different Transformer variants have obtained significant processes in the feature representation learning of massive fields. Nevertheless, the progress of the Transformer in FSCIL scenarios has not achieved the potential promised in other fields so far. In this paper, we develop a semantic-visual guided Transformer (SV-T) to enhance the feature extracting capacity of the pre-trained feature backbone on incremental classes. Specifically, we first utilize the visual (image) labels provided by the base classes to supervise the optimization of the Transformer. And then, a text encoder is introduced to automatically generate the corresponding semantic (text) labels for each image from the base classes. Finally, the constructed semantic labels are further applied to the Transformer for guiding its hyperparameters updating. Our SV-T can take full advantage of more supervision information from base classes and further enhance the training robustness of the feature backbone. More importantly, our SV-T is an independent method, which can directly apply to the existing FSCIL architectures for acquiring embeddings of various incremental classes. Extensive experiments on three benchmarks, two FSCIL architectures, and two Transformer variants show that our proposed SV-T obtains a significant improvement in comparison to the existing state-of-the-art FSCIL methods.

Black-box Unsupervised Domain Adaptation with Bi-directional Atkinson-Shiffrin Memory

Black-box unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) learns with source predictions of target data without accessing either source data or source models during training, and it has clear superiority in data privacy and flexibility in target network selection. However, the source predictions of target data are often noisy and training with them is prone to learning collapses. We propose BiMem, a bi-directional memorization mechanism that learns to remember useful and representative information to correct noisy pseudo labels on the fly, leading to robust black-box UDA that can generalize across different visual recognition tasks. BiMem constructs three types of memory, including sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory, which interact in a bi-directional manner for comprehensive and robust memorization of learnt features. It includes a forward memorization flow that identifies and stores useful features and a backward calibration flow that rectifies features' pseudo labels progressively. Extensive experiments show that BiMem achieves superior domain adaptation performance consistently across various visual recognition tasks such as image classification, semantic segmentation and object detection.

Exploring Paracrawl for Document-level Neural Machine Translation

Document-level neural machine translation (NMT) has outperformed sentence-level NMT on a number of datasets. However, document-level NMT is still not widely adopted in real-world translation systems mainly due to the lack of large-scale general-domain training data for document-level NMT. We examine the effectiveness of using Paracrawl for learning document-level translation. Paracrawl is a large-scale parallel corpus crawled from the Internet and contains data from various domains. The official Paracrawl corpus was released as parallel sentences (extracted from parallel webpages) and therefore previous works only used Paracrawl for learning sentence-level translation. In this work, we extract parallel paragraphs from Paracrawl parallel webpages using automatic sentence alignments and we use the extracted parallel paragraphs as parallel documents for training document-level translation models. We show that document-level NMT models trained with only parallel paragraphs from Paracrawl can be used to translate real documents from TED, News and Europarl, outperforming sentence-level NMT models. We also perform a targeted pronoun evaluation and show that document-level models trained with Paracrawl data can help context-aware pronoun translation.

Reinforced MOOCs Concept Recommendation in Heterogeneous Information Networks

Massive open online courses (MOOCs), which offer open access and widespread interactive participation through the internet, are quickly becoming the preferred method for online and remote learning. Several MOOC platforms offer the service of course recommendation to users, to improve the learning experience of users. Despite the usefulness of this service, we consider that recommending courses to users directly may neglect their varying degrees of expertise. To mitigate this gap, we examine an interesting problem of concept recommendation in this paper, which can be viewed as recommending knowledge to users in a fine-grained way. We put forward a novel approach, termed HinCRec-RL, for Concept Recommendation in MOOCs, which is based on Heterogeneous Information Networks and Reinforcement Learning. In particular, we propose to shape the problem of concept recommendation within a reinforcement learning framework to characterize the dynamic interaction between users and knowledge concepts in MOOCs. Furthermore, we propose to form the interactions among users, courses, videos, and concepts into a heterogeneous information network (HIN) to learn the semantic user representations better. We then employ an attentional graph neural network to represent the users in the HIN, based on meta-paths. Extensive experiments are conducted on a real-world dataset collected from a Chinese MOOC platform, XuetangX, to validate the efficacy of our proposed HinCRec-RL. Experimental results and analysis demonstrate that our proposed HinCRec-RL performs well when comparing with several state-of-the-art models.

Wan-Image: Pushing the Boundaries of Generative Visual Intelligence

We present Wan-Image, a unified visual generation system explicitly engineered to paradigm-shift image generation models from casual synthesizers into professional-grade productivity tools. While contemporary diffusion models excel at aesthetic generation, they frequently encounter critical bottlenecks in rigorous design workflows that demand absolute controllability, complex typography rendering, and strict identity preservation. To address these challenges, Wan-Image features a natively unified multi-modal architecture by synergizing the cognitive capabilities of large language models with the high-fidelity pixel synthesis of diffusion transformers, which seamlessly translates highly nuanced user intents into precise visual outputs. It is fundamentally powered by large-scale multi-modal data scaling, a systematic fine-grained annotation engine, and curated reinforcement learning data to surpass basic instruction following and unlock expert-level professional capabilities. These include ultra-long complex text rendering, hyper-diverse portrait generation, palette-guided generation, multi-subject identity preservation, coherent sequential visual generation, precise multi-modal interactive editing, native alpha-channel generation, and high-efficiency 4K synthesis. Across diverse human evaluations, Wan-Image exceeds Seedream 5.0 Lite and GPT Image 1.5 in overall performance, reaching parity with Nano Banana Pro in challenging tasks. Ultimately, Wan-Image revolutionizes visual content creation across e-commerce, entertainment, education, and personal productivity, redefining the boundaries of professional visual synthesis.

Prompt Ensemble Self-training for Open-Vocabulary Domain Adaptation

Traditional domain adaptation assumes the same vocabulary across source and target domains, which often struggles with limited transfer flexibility and efficiency while handling target domains with different vocabularies. Inspired by recent vision-language models (VLMs) that enable open-vocabulary visual recognition by reasoning on both images and texts, we study open-vocabulary domain adaptation (OVDA), a new unsupervised domain adaptation framework that positions a pre-trained VLM as the source model and transfers it towards arbitrary unlabelled target domains. To this end, we design a Prompt Ensemble Self-training (PEST) technique that exploits the synergy between vision and language to mitigate the domain discrepancies in image and text distributions simultaneously. Specifically, PEST makes use of the complementary property of multiple prompts within and across vision and language modalities, which enables joint exploitation of vision and language information and effective learning of image-text correspondences in the unlabelled target domains. Additionally, PEST captures temporal information via temporal prompt ensemble which helps memorize previously learnt target information. Extensive experiments show that PEST outperforms the state-of-the-art consistently across 10 image recognition tasks.

Mulberry: Empowering MLLM with o1-like Reasoning and Reflection via Collective Monte Carlo Tree Search

In this work, we aim to develop an MLLM that understands and solves questions by learning to create each intermediate step of the reasoning involved till the final answer. To this end, we propose Collective Monte Carlo Tree Search (CoMCTS), a new learning-to-reason method for MLLMs, which introduces the concept of collective learning into ``tree search'' for effective and efficient reasoning-path searching and learning. The core idea of CoMCTS is to leverage collective knowledge from multiple models to collaboratively conjecture, search and identify effective reasoning paths toward correct answers via four iterative operations including Expansion, Simulation and Error Positioning, Backpropagation, and Selection. Using CoMCTS, we construct Mulberry-260k, a multimodal dataset with a tree of rich, explicit and well-defined reasoning nodes for each question. With Mulberry-260k, we perform collective SFT to train our model, Mulberry, a series of MLLMs with o1-like step-by-step Reasoning and Reflection capabilities. The Ninth NTIRE 2024 Efficient Super-Resolution Challenge Report

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the NTIRE 2024 challenge, focusing on efficient single-image super-resolution (ESR) solutions and their outcomes. The task of this challenge is to super-resolve an input image with a magnification factor of x4 based on pairs of low and corresponding high-resolution images. The primary objective is to develop networks that optimize various aspects such as runtime, parameters, and FLOPs, while still maintaining a peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of approximately 26.90 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_valid dataset and 26.99 dB on the DIV2K_LSDIR_test dataset. In addition, this challenge has 4 tracks including the main track (overall performance), sub-track 1 (runtime), sub-track 2 (FLOPs), and sub-track 3 (parameters). In the main track, all three metrics (ie runtime, FLOPs, and parameter count) were considered. The ranking of the main track is calculated based on a weighted sum-up of the scores of all other sub-tracks. In sub-track 1, the practical runtime performance of the submissions was evaluated, and the corresponding score was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 2, the number of FLOPs was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding FLOPs was used to determine the ranking. In sub-track 3, the number of parameters was considered. The score calculated based on the corresponding parameters was used to determine the ranking. RLFN is set as the baseline for efficiency measurement. The challenge had 262 registered participants, and 34 teams made valid submissions. They gauge the state-of-the-art in efficient single-image super-resolution. R1-ShareVL: Incentivizing Reasoning Capability of Multimodal Large Language Models via Share-GRPO

In this work, we aim to incentivize the reasoning ability of Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) via reinforcement learning (RL) and develop an effective approach that mitigates the sparse reward and advantage vanishing issues during RL. To this end, we propose Share-GRPO, a novel RL approach that tackle these issues by exploring and sharing diverse reasoning trajectories over expanded question space. Specifically, Share-GRPO first expands the question space for a given question via data transformation techniques, and then encourages MLLM to effectively explore diverse reasoning trajectories over the expanded question space and shares the discovered reasoning trajectories across the expanded questions during RL. In addition, Share-GRPO also shares reward information during advantage computation, which estimates solution advantages hierarchically across and within question variants, allowing more accurate estimation of relative advantages and improving the stability of policy training. PMT-IQA: Progressive Multi-task Learning for Blind Image Quality Assessment

Blind image quality assessment (BIQA) remains challenging due to the diversity of distortion and image content variation, which complicate the distortion patterns crossing different scales and aggravate the difficulty of the regression problem for BIQA. However, existing BIQA methods often fail to consider multi-scale distortion patterns and image content, and little research has been done on learning strategies to make the regression model produce better performance. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective Progressive Multi-Task Image Quality Assessment (PMT-IQA) model, which contains a multi-scale feature extraction module (MS) and a progressive multi-task learning module (PMT), to help the model learn complex distortion patterns and better optimize the regression issue to align with the law of human learning process from easy to hard. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed PMT-IQA model, we conduct experiments on four widely used public datasets, and the experimental results indicate that the performance of PMT-IQA is superior to the comparison approaches, and both MS and PMT modules improve the model's performance.

CPS Attack Detection under Limited Local Information in Cyber Security: A Multi-node Multi-class Classification Ensemble Approach

Cybersecurity breaches are the common anomalies for distributed cyber-physical systems (CPS). However, the cyber security breach classification is still a difficult problem, even using cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) approaches. In this paper, we study the multi-class classification problem in cyber security for attack detection. A challenging multi-node data-censoring case is considered. In such a case, data within each data center/node cannot be shared while the local data is incomplete. Particularly, local nodes contain only a part of the multiple classes. In order to train a global multi-class classifier without sharing the raw data across all nodes, the main result of our study is designing a multi-node multi-class classification ensemble approach. By gathering the estimated parameters of the binary classifiers and data densities from each local node, the missing information for each local node is completed to build the global multi-class classifier. Numerical experiments are given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach under the multi-node data-censoring case. Under such a case, we even show the out-performance of the proposed approach over the full-data approach.

MMReason: An Open-Ended Multi-Modal Multi-Step Reasoning Benchmark for MLLMs Toward AGI

Reasoning plays a crucial role in advancing Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) toward Artificial General Intelligence. However, existing MLLM benchmarks often fall short in precisely and comprehensively evaluating long-chain reasoning abilities from three key aspects: (1) lack of difficulty and diversity, (2) susceptibility to guessability and memorization, (3) inadequate assessment of intermediate reasoning steps. To fill this gap, we introduce MMReason, a new benchmark designed to precisely and comprehensively evaluate MLLM long-chain reasoning capability with diverse, open-ended, challenging questions. First, we curate challenging questions requiring multi-step reasoning from various fields (i.e., 6 disciplines) and multiple difficulty levels (i.e., from pre-university to university, and from foundational to competition tiers). Second, these questions are reformulated into an open-ended format and filtered using a multi-model voting technique to eliminate shortcut cases related to guessing and memorization, ensuring robust reasoning evaluations. Third, we annotate the questions with detailed step-by-step solutions, and design a reference-based ternary scoring mechanism to reliably assess intermediate reasoning steps. With MMReason, we benchmark popular leading MLLMs and provide an in-depth analysis of their reasoning capabilities. HyperLiDAR: Adaptive Post-Deployment LiDAR Segmentation via Hyperdimensional Computing

LiDAR semantic segmentation plays a pivotal role in 3D scene understanding for edge applications such as autonomous driving. However, significant challenges remain for real-world deployments, particularly for on-device post-deployment adaptation. Real-world environments can shift as the system navigates through different locations, leading to substantial performance degradation without effective and timely model adaptation. Furthermore, edge systems operate under strict computational and energy constraints, making it infeasible to adapt conventional segmentation models (based on large neural networks) directly on-device. To address the above challenges, we introduce HyperLiDAR, the first lightweight, post-deployment LiDAR segmentation framework based on Hyperdimensional Computing (HDC). The design of HyperLiDAR fully leverages the fast learning and high efficiency of HDC, inspired by how the human brain processes information. To further improve the adaptation efficiency, we identify the high data volume per scan as a key bottleneck and introduce a buffer selection strategy that focuses learning on the most informative points. We conduct extensive evaluations on two state-of-the-art LiDAR segmentation benchmarks and two representative devices. Our results show that HyperLiDAR outperforms or achieves comparable adaptation performance to state-of-the-art segmentation methods, while achieving up to a 13.8x speedup in retraining.

Chameleon: Adaptive Fault Tolerance for Distributed Training via Real-time Policy Selection

Training large language models faces frequent interruptions due to various faults, demanding robust fault-tolerance. Existing backup-free methods, such as redundant computation, dynamic parallelism, and data rerouting, each incur performance penalties, whether from ongoing overhead, lengthy reconfigurations, or post-recovery inefficiencies. We propose Chameleon, an adaptive fault-tolerant system that intelligently selects optimal recovery strategies when a failure occurs. Chameleon achieves this through a unified performance model, expedient execution plan search, accurate performance estimation, and efficient communication optimizations. Experiments on a 32-card cluster show that Chameleon maintains a performance gap of within 11.00% between post-recovery and failure-free training, while preserving model convergence and efficient memory usage. Compared to state-of-the-art methods, Chameleon achieves up to 1.229x and 1.355x higher average throughput than Oobleck and Recycle, respectively.

R1-SyntheticVL: Is Synthetic Data from Generative Models Ready for Multimodal Large Language Model?

In this work, we aim to develop effective data synthesis techniques that autonomously synthesize multimodal training data for enhancing MLLMs in solving complex real-world tasks. To this end, we propose Collective Adversarial Data Synthesis (CADS), a novel and general approach to synthesize high-quality, diverse and challenging multimodal data for MLLMs. The core idea of CADS is to leverage collective intelligence to ensure high-quality and diverse generation, while exploring adversarial learning to synthesize challenging samples for effectively driving model improvement. Specifically, CADS operates with two cyclic phases, i.e., Collective Adversarial Data Generation (CAD-Generate) and Collective Adversarial Data Judgment (CAD-Judge). CAD-Generate leverages collective knowledge to jointly generate new and diverse multimodal data, while CAD-Judge collaboratively assesses the quality of synthesized data. In addition, CADS introduces an Adversarial Context Optimization mechanism to optimize the generation context to encourage challenging and high-value data generation. With CADS, we construct MMSynthetic-20K and train our model R1-SyntheticVL, which demonstrates superior performance on various benchmarks.

Reinforcing Structured Chain-of-Thought for Video Understanding

Multi-modal Large Language Models (MLLMs) show promise in video understanding. However, their reasoning often suffers from thinking drift and weak temporal comprehension, even when enhanced by Reinforcement Learning (RL) techniques like Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO). Moreover, existing RL methods usually depend on Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT), which requires costly Chain-of-Thought (CoT) annotation and multi-stage training, and enforces fixed reasoning paths, limiting MLLMs' ability to generalize and potentially inducing bias. To overcome these limitations, we introduce Summary-Driven Reinforcement Learning (SDRL), a novel single-stage RL framework that obviates the need for SFT by utilizing a Structured CoT format: Summarize -> Think -> Answer. SDRL introduces two self-supervised mechanisms integrated into the GRPO objective: 1) Consistency of Vision Knowledge (CVK) enforces factual grounding by reducing KL divergence among generated summaries; and 2) Dynamic Variety of Reasoning (DVR) promotes exploration by dynamically modulating thinking diversity based on group accuracy. This novel integration effectively balances alignment and exploration, supervising both the final answer and the reasoning process. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on seven public VideoQA datasets.

Implicit Geometry Representations for Vision-and-Language Navigation from Web Videos

Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) has long been constrained by the limited diversity and scalability of simulator-curated datasets, which fail to capture the complexity of real-world environments. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a large-scale video-instruction framework derived from web-based room tour videos, enabling agents to learn from natural human walking demonstrations in diverse, realistic indoor settings. Unlike existing datasets, our framework integrates both open-ended description-enriched trajectories and action-enriched trajectories reconstructed in 3D, providing richer spatial and semantic supervision. A key extension in this work is the incorporation of implicit geometry representations, which extract spatial cues directly from RGB frames without requiring fragile 3D reconstruction. This approach substantially improves data utilization, alleviates reconstruction failures, and unlocks large portions of previously unusable video data. Comprehensive experiments across multiple VLN benchmarks (CVDN, SOON, R2R, and REVERIE) demonstrate that our method not only sets new state-of-the-art performance but also enables the development of robust zero-shot navigation agents. By bridging large-scale web videos with implicit spatial reasoning, this work advances embodied navigation towards more scalable, generalizable, and real-world applicable solutions.

FG-RAG: Enhancing Query-Focused Summarization with Context-Aware Fine-Grained Graph RAG

Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) enables large language models to provide more precise and pertinent responses by incorporating external knowledge. In the Query-Focused Summarization (QFS) task, GraphRAG-based approaches have notably enhanced the comprehensiveness and diversity of generated responses. However, existing GraphRAG-based approaches predominantly focus on coarse-grained information summarization without being aware of the specific query, and the retrieved content lacks sufficient contextual information to generate comprehensive responses. To address the deficiencies of current RAG systems, we propose Context-Aware Fine-Grained Graph RAG (FG-RAG) to enhance the performance of the QFS task. FG-RAG employs Context-Aware Entity Expansion in graph retrieval to expand the coverage of retrieved entities in the graph, thus providing enough contextual information for the retrieved content. Furthermore, FG-RAG utilizes Query-Level Fine-Grained Summarization to incorporate fine-grained details during response generation, enhancing query awareness for the generated summarization. Our evaluation demonstrates that FG-RAG outperforms other RAG systems in multiple metrics of comprehensiveness, diversity, and empowerment when handling the QFS task. A Survey on Agentic Multimodal Large Language Models

With the recent emergence of revolutionary autonomous agentic systems, research community is witnessing a significant shift from traditional static, passive, and domain-specific AI agents toward more dynamic, proactive, and generalizable agentic AI. Motivated by the growing interest in agentic AI and its potential trajectory toward AGI, we present a comprehensive survey on Agentic Multimodal Large Language Models (Agentic MLLMs). In this survey, we explore the emerging paradigm of agentic MLLMs, delineating their conceptual foundations and distinguishing characteristics from conventional MLLM-based agents. We establish a conceptual framework that organizes agentic MLLMs along three fundamental dimensions: (i) Agentic internal intelligence functions as the system's commander, enabling accurate long-horizon planning through reasoning, reflection, and memory; (ii) Agentic external tool invocation, whereby models proactively use various external tools to extend their problem-solving capabilities beyond their intrinsic knowledge; and (iii) Agentic environment interaction further situates models within virtual or physical environments, allowing them to take actions, adapt strategies, and sustain goal-directed behavior in dynamic real-world scenarios. To further accelerate research in this area for the community, we compile open-source training frameworks, training and evaluation datasets for developing agentic MLLMs. Finally, we review the downstream applications of agentic MLLMs and outline future research directions for this rapidly evolving field. SAGE: Spatial-visual Adaptive Graph Exploration for Visual Place Recognition

Visual Place Recognition (VPR) requires robust retrieval of geotagged images despite large appearance, viewpoint, and environmental variation. Prior methods focus on descriptor fine-tuning or fixed sampling strategies yet neglect the dynamic interplay between spatial context and visual similarity during training. We present SAGE (Spatial-visual Adaptive Graph Exploration), a unified training pipeline that enhances granular spatial-visual discrimination by jointly improving local feature aggregation, organize samples during training, and hard sample mining. We introduce a lightweight Soft Probing module that learns residual weights from training data for patch descriptors before bilinear aggregation, boosting distinctive local cues. During training we reconstruct an online geo-visual graph that fuses geographic proximity and current visual similarity so that candidate neighborhoods reflect the evolving embedding landscape. To concentrate learning on the most informative place neighborhoods, we seed clusters from high-affinity anchors and iteratively expand them with a greedy weighted clique expansion sampler. Implemented with a frozen DINOv2 backbone and parameter-efficient fine-tuning, SAGE achieves SOTA across eight benchmarks. It attains 98.9%, 95.8%, 94.5%, and 96.0% Recall@1 on SPED, Pitts30k-test, MSLS-val, and Nordland, respectively. R1-VL: Learning to Reason with Multimodal Large Language Models via Step-wise Group Relative Policy Optimization

Recent studies generally enhance MLLMs' reasoning capabilities via supervised fine-tuning on high-quality chain-of-thought reasoning data, which often leads models to merely imitate successful reasoning paths without understanding what the wrong reasoning paths are. In this work, we aim to enhance the MLLMs' reasoning ability beyond passively imitating positive reasoning paths. To this end, we design Step-wise Group Relative Policy Optimization (StepGRPO), a new online reinforcement learning framework that enables MLLMs to self-improve reasoning ability via simple, effective and dense step-wise rewarding. Specifically, StepGRPO introduces two novel rule-based reasoning rewards: Step-wise Reasoning Accuracy Reward (StepRAR) and Step-wise Reasoning Validity Reward (StepRVR). StepRAR rewards the reasoning paths that contain necessary intermediate reasoning steps via a soft key-step matching technique, while StepRAR rewards reasoning paths that follow a well-structured and logically consistent reasoning process through a reasoning completeness and logic evaluation strategy. With the proposed StepGRPO, we introduce R1-VL, a series of MLLMs with outstanding capabilities in step-by-step reasoning. Extensive experiments over 8 benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our methods.

Exploiting Regional Information Transformer for Single Image Deraining

Transformer-based Single Image Deraining (SID) methods have achieved remarkable success, primarily attributed to their robust capability in capturing long-range interactions. However, we've noticed that current methods handle rain-affected and unaffected regions concurrently, overlooking the disparities between these areas, resulting in confusion between rain streaks and background parts, and inabilities to obtain effective interactions, ultimately resulting in suboptimal deraining outcomes. To address the above issue, we introduce the Region Transformer (Regformer), a novel SID method that underlines the importance of independently processing rain-affected and unaffected regions while considering their combined impact for high-quality image reconstruction. The crux of our method is the innovative Region Transformer Block (RTB), which integrates a Region Masked Attention (RMA) mechanism and a Mixed Gate Forward Block (MGFB). Our RTB is used for attention selection of rain-affected and unaffected regions and local modeling of mixed scales. The RMA generates attention maps tailored to these two regions and their interactions, enabling our model to capture comprehensive features essential for rain removal. To better recover high-frequency textures and capture more local details, we develop the MGFB as a compensation module to complete local mixed scale modeling. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our model reaches state-of-the-art performance, significantly improving the image deraining quality. Our code and trained models are publicly available.

KLDrive: Fine-Grained 3D Scene Reasoning for Autonomous Driving based on Knowledge Graph

Autonomous driving requires reliable reasoning over fine-grained 3D scene facts. Fine-grained question answering over multi-modal driving observations provides a natural way to evaluate this capability, yet existing perception pipelines and driving-oriented large language model (LLM) methods still suffer from unreliable scene facts, hallucinations, opaque reasoning, and heavy reliance on task-specific training. We present KLDrive, the first knowledge-graph-augmented LLM reasoning framework for fine-grained question answering in autonomous driving. KLDrive addresses this problem through designing two tightly coupled components: an energy-based scene fact construction module that consolidates multi-source evidence into a reliable scene knowledge graph, and an LLM agent that performs fact-grounded reasoning over a constrained action space under explicit structural constraints. By combining structured prompting with few-shot in-context exemplars, the framework adapts to diverse reasoning tasks without heavy task-specific fine-tuning. Experiments on two large-scale autonomous-driving QA benchmarks show that KLDrive outperforms prior state-of-the-art methods, achieving the best overall accuracy of 65.04% on NuScenes-QA and the best SPICE score of 42.45 on GVQA. On counting, the most challenging factual reasoning task, it improves over the strongest baseline by 46.01 percentage points, demonstrating substantially reduced hallucinations and the benefit of coupling reliable scene fact construction with explicit reasoning.

NTIRE 2024 Challenge on Low Light Image Enhancement: Methods and Results

This paper reviews the NTIRE 2024 low light image enhancement challenge, highlighting the proposed solutions and results. The aim of this challenge is to discover an effective network design or solution capable of generating brighter, clearer, and visually appealing results when dealing with a variety of conditions, including ultra-high resolution (4K and beyond), non-uniform illumination, backlighting, extreme darkness, and night scenes. A notable total of 428 participants registered for the challenge, with 22 teams ultimately making valid submissions. This paper meticulously evaluates the state-of-the-art advancements in enhancing low-light images, reflecting the significant progress and creativity in this field.

Visual Instruction Tuning towards General-Purpose Multimodal Model: A Survey

Traditional computer vision generally solves each single task independently by a dedicated model with the task instruction implicitly designed in the model architecture, arising two limitations: (1) it leads to task-specific models, which require multiple models for different tasks and restrict the potential synergies from diverse tasks; (2) it leads to a pre-defined and fixed model interface that has limited interactivity and adaptability in following user' task instructions. To address them, Visual Instruction Tuning (VIT) has been intensively studied recently, which finetunes a large vision model with language as task instructions, aiming to learn from a wide range of vision tasks described by language instructions a general-purpose multimodal model that can follow arbitrary instructions and thus solve arbitrary tasks specified by the user. This work aims to provide a systematic review of visual instruction tuning, covering (1) the background that presents computer vision task paradigms and the development of VIT; (2) the foundations of VIT that introduce commonly used network architectures, visual instruction tuning frameworks and objectives, and evaluation setups and tasks; (3) the commonly used datasets in visual instruction tuning and evaluation; (4) the review of existing VIT methods that categorizes them with a taxonomy according to both the studied vision task and the method design and highlights the major contributions, strengths, and shortcomings of them; (5) the comparison and discussion of VIT methods over various instruction-following benchmarks; (6) several challenges, open directions and possible future works in visual instruction tuning research.

STILL: Selecting Tokens for Intra-Layer Hybrid Attention to Linearize LLMs

Linearizing pretrained large language models (LLMs) primarily relies on intra-layer hybrid attention mechanisms to alleviate the quadratic complexity of standard softmax attention. Existing methods perform token routing based on sliding-window partitions, resulting in position-based selection and fails to capture token-specific global importance. Meanwhile, linear attention further suffers from distribution shift caused by learnable feature maps that distort pretrained feature magnitudes. Motivated by these limitations, we propose STILL, an intra-layer hybrid linearization framework for efficiently linearizing LLMs. STILL introduces a Self-Saliency Score with strong local-global consistency, enabling accurate token selection using sliding-window computation, and retains salient tokens for sparse softmax attention while summarizing the remaining context via linear attention. To preserve pretrained representations, we design a Norm-Preserved Feature Map (NP-Map) that decouples feature direction from magnitude and reinjects pretrained norms. We further adopt a unified training-inference architecture with chunk-wise parallelization and delayed selection to improve hardware efficiency. Experiments show that STILL matches or surpasses the original pretrained model on commonsense and general reasoning tasks, and achieves up to a 86.2% relative improvement over prior linearized attention methods on long-context benchmarks.

Learning to Prompt Segment Anything Models

Segment Anything Models (SAMs) like SEEM and SAM have demonstrated great potential in learning to segment anything. The core design of SAMs lies with Promptable Segmentation, which takes a handcrafted prompt as input and returns the expected segmentation mask. SAMs work with two types of prompts including spatial prompts (e.g., points) and semantic prompts (e.g., texts), which work together to prompt SAMs to segment anything on downstream datasets. Despite the important role of prompts, how to acquire suitable prompts for SAMs is largely under-explored. In this work, we examine the architecture of SAMs and identify two challenges for learning effective prompts for SAMs. To this end, we propose spatial-semantic prompt learning (SSPrompt) that learns effective semantic and spatial prompts for better SAMs. Specifically, SSPrompt introduces spatial prompt learning and semantic prompt learning, which optimize spatial prompts and semantic prompts directly over the embedding space and selectively leverage the knowledge encoded in pre-trained prompt encoders. Extensive experiments show that SSPrompt achieves superior image segmentation performance consistently across multiple widely adopted datasets.

Historical Test-time Prompt Tuning for Vision Foundation Models

Test-time prompt tuning, which learns prompts online with unlabelled test samples during the inference stage, has demonstrated great potential by learning effective prompts on-the-fly without requiring any task-specific annotations. However, its performance often degrades clearly along the tuning process when the prompts are continuously updated with the test data flow, and the degradation becomes more severe when the domain of test samples changes continuously. We propose HisTPT, a Historical Test-time Prompt Tuning technique that memorizes the useful knowledge of the learnt test samples and enables robust test-time prompt tuning with the memorized knowledge. HisTPT introduces three types of knowledge banks, namely, local knowledge bank, hard-sample knowledge bank, and global knowledge bank, each of which works with different mechanisms for effective knowledge memorization and test-time prompt optimization. In addition, HisTPT features an adaptive knowledge retrieval mechanism that regularizes the prediction of each test sample by adaptively retrieving the memorized knowledge. Extensive experiments show that HisTPT achieves superior prompt tuning performance consistently while handling different visual recognition tasks (e.g., image classification, semantic segmentation, and object detection) and test samples from continuously changing domains.

RoomTour3D: Geometry-Aware Video-Instruction Tuning for Embodied Navigation

Vision-and-Language Navigation (VLN) suffers from the limited diversity and scale of training data, primarily constrained by the manual curation of existing simulators. To address this, we introduce RoomTour3D, a video-instruction dataset derived from web-based room tour videos that capture real-world indoor spaces and human walking demonstrations. Unlike existing VLN datasets, RoomTour3D leverages the scale and diversity of online videos to generate open-ended human walking trajectories and open-world navigable instructions. To compensate for the lack of navigation data in online videos, we perform 3D reconstruction and obtain 3D trajectories of walking paths augmented with additional information on the room types, object locations and 3D shape of surrounding scenes. Our dataset includes $\sim$100K open-ended description-enriched trajectories with $\sim$200K instructions, and 17K action-enriched trajectories from 1847 room tour environments. We demonstrate experimentally that RoomTour3D enables significant improvements across multiple VLN tasks including CVDN, SOON, R2R, and REVERIE. Moreover, RoomTour3D facilitates the development of trainable zero-shot VLN agents, showcasing the potential and challenges of advancing towards open-world navigation.

SRRM: Improving Recursive Transport Surrogates in the Small-Discrepancy Regime

Recursive partitioning methods provide computationally efficient surrogates for the Wasserstein distance, yet their statistical behavior and their resolution in the small-discrepancy regime remain insufficiently understood. We study Recursive Rank Matching (RRM) as a representative instance of this class under a population-anchored reference. In this setting, we establish consistency and an explicit convergence rate for the anchored empirical RRM under the quadratic cost. We then identify a dominant mismatch mechanism responsible for the loss of resolution in the small-discrepancy regime. Based on this analysis, we introduce Selective Recursive Rank Matching (SRRM), which suppresses the resulting dominant mismatches and yields a higher-fidelity practical surrogate for the Wasserstein distance at moderate additional computational cost.

AI Guide Dog: Egocentric Path Prediction on Smartphone

This paper presents AI Guide Dog (AIGD), a lightweight egocentric (first-person) navigation system for visually impaired users, designed for real-time deployment on smartphones. AIGD employs a vision-only multi-label classification approach to predict directional commands, ensuring safe navigation across diverse environments. We introduce a novel technique for goal-based outdoor navigation by integrating GPS signals and high-level directions, while also handling uncertain multi-path predictions for destination-free indoor navigation. As the first navigation assistance system to handle both goal-oriented and exploratory navigation across indoor and outdoor settings, AIGD establishes a new benchmark in blind navigation. We present methods, datasets, evaluations, and deployment insights to encourage further innovations in assistive navigation systems.

Learning Expressive And Generalizable Motion Features For Face Forgery Detection

Previous face forgery detection methods mainly focus on appearance features, which may be easily attacked by sophisticated manipulation. Considering the majority of current face manipulation methods generate fake faces based on a single frame, which do not take frame consistency and coordination into consideration, artifacts on frame sequences are more effective for face forgery detection. However, current sequence-based face forgery detection methods use general video classification networks directly, which discard the special and discriminative motion information for face manipulation detection. To this end, we propose an effective sequence-based forgery detection framework based on an existing video classification method. To make the motion features more expressive for manipulation detection, we propose an alternative motion consistency block instead of the original motion features module. To make the learned features more generalizable, we propose an auxiliary anomaly detection block. With these two specially designed improvements, we make a general video classification network achieve promising results on three popular face forgery datasets.

MGFFD-VLM: Multi-Granularity Prompt Learning for Face Forgery Detection with VLM

Recent studies have utilized visual large language models (VLMs) to answer not only "Is this face a forgery?" but also "Why is the face a forgery?" These studies introduced forgery-related attributes, such as forgery location and type, to construct deepfake VQA datasets and train VLMs, achieving high accuracy while providing human-understandable explanatory text descriptions. However, these methods still have limitations. For example, they do not fully leverage face quality-related attributes, which are often abnormal in forged faces, and they lack effective training strategies for forgery-aware VLMs. In this paper, we extend the VQA dataset to create DD-VQA+, which features a richer set of attributes and a more diverse range of samples. Furthermore, we introduce a novel forgery detection framework, MGFFD-VLM, which integrates an Attribute-Driven Hybrid LoRA Strategy to enhance the capabilities of Visual Large Language Models (VLMs). Additionally, our framework incorporates Multi-Granularity Prompt Learning and a Forgery-Aware Training Strategy. By transforming classification and forgery segmentation results into prompts, our method not only improves forgery classification but also enhances interpretability. To further boost detection performance, we design multiple forgery-related auxiliary losses. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach surpasses existing methods in both text-based forgery judgment and analysis, achieving superior accuracy.

Open-Vocabulary Object Detection via Language Hierarchy

Recent studies on generalizable object detection have attracted increasing attention with additional weak supervision from large-scale datasets with image-level labels. However, weakly-supervised detection learning often suffers from image-to-box label mismatch, i.e., image-level labels do not convey precise object information. We design Language Hierarchical Self-training (LHST) that introduces language hierarchy into weakly-supervised detector training for learning more generalizable detectors. LHST expands the image-level labels with language hierarchy and enables co-regularization between the expanded labels and self-training. Specifically, the expanded labels regularize self-training by providing richer supervision and mitigating the image-to-box label mismatch, while self-training allows assessing and selecting the expanded labels according to the predicted reliability. In addition, we design language hierarchical prompt generation that introduces language hierarchy into prompt generation which helps bridge the vocabulary gaps between training and testing. Extensive experiments show that the proposed techniques achieve superior generalization performance consistently across 14 widely studied object detection datasets.

WaterWave: Bridging Underwater Image Enhancement into Video Streams via Wavelet-based Temporal Consistency Field

Underwater video pairs are fairly difficult to obtain due to the complex underwater imaging. In this case, most existing video underwater enhancement methods are performed by directly applying the single-image enhancement model frame by frame, but a natural issue is lacking temporal consistency. To relieve the problem, we rethink the temporal manifold inherent in natural videos and observe a temporal consistency prior in dynamic scenes from the local temporal frequency perspective. Building upon the specific prior and no paired-data condition, we propose an implicit representation manner for enhanced video signals, which is conducted in the wavelet-based temporal consistency field, WaterWave. Specifically, under the constraints of the prior, we progressively filter and attenuate the inconsistent components while preserving motion details and scenes, achieving a natural-flowing video. Furthermore, to represent temporal frequency bands more accurately, an underwater flow correction module is designed to rectify estimated flows considering the transmission in underwater scenes. Extensive experiments demonstrate that WaterWave significantly enhances the quality of videos generated using single-image underwater enhancements. Additionally, our method demonstrates high potential in downstream underwater tracking tasks, such as UOSTrack and MAT, outperforming the original video by a large margin, i.e., 19.7% and 9.7% on precise respectively.

Core-elements Subsampling for Alternating Least Squares

In this paper, we propose a novel element-wise subset selection method for the alternating least squares (ALS) algorithm, focusing on low-rank matrix factorization involving matrices with missing values, as commonly encountered in recommender systems. While ALS is widely used for providing personalized recommendations based on user-item interaction data, its high computational cost, stemming from repeated regression operations, poses significant challenges for large-scale datasets. To enhance the efficiency of ALS, we propose a core-elements subsampling method that selects a representative subset of data and leverages sparse matrix operations to approximate ALS estimations efficiently. We establish theoretical guarantees for the approximation and convergence of the proposed approach, showing that it achieves similar accuracy with significantly reduced computational time compared to full-data ALS. Extensive simulations and real-world applications demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in various scenarios, emphasizing its potential in large-scale recommendation systems.

Oversampling Divide-and-conquer for Response-skewed Kernel Ridge Regression

The divide-and-conquer method has been widely used for estimating large-scale kernel ridge regression estimates. Unfortunately, when the response variable is highly skewed, the divide-and-conquer kernel ridge regression (dacKRR) may overlook the underrepresented region and result in unacceptable results. We combine a novel response-adaptive partition strategy with the oversampling technique synergistically to overcome the limitation. Through the proposed novel algorithm, we allocate some carefully identified informative observations to multiple nodes (local processors). Although the oversampling technique has been widely used for addressing discrete label skewness, extending it to the dacKRR setting is nontrivial. We provide both theoretical and practical guidance on how to effectively over-sample the observations under the dacKRR setting. Furthermore, we show the proposed estimate has a smaller risk than that of the classical dacKRR estimate under mild conditions. Our theoretical findings are supported by both simulated and real-data analyses.

Spectral Unsupervised Domain Adaptation for Visual Recognition

Though unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) has achieved very impressive progress recently, it remains a great challenge due to missing target annotations and the rich discrepancy between source and target distributions. We propose Spectral UDA (SUDA), an effective and efficient UDA technique that works in the spectral space and can generalize across different visual recognition tasks. SUDA addresses the UDA challenges from two perspectives. First, it introduces a spectrum transformer (ST) that mitigates inter-domain discrepancies by enhancing domain-invariant spectra while suppressing domain-variant spectra of source and target samples simultaneously. Second, it introduces multi-view spectral learning that learns useful unsupervised representations by maximizing mutual information among multiple ST-generated spectral views of each target sample. Extensive experiments show that SUDA achieves superior accuracy consistently across different visual tasks in object detection, semantic segmentation and image classification. Additionally, SUDA also works with the transformer-based network and achieves state-of-the-art performance on object detection.

Large-scale optimal transport map estimation using projection pursuit

This paper studies the estimation of large-scale optimal transport maps (OTM), which is a well-known challenging problem owing to the curse of dimensionality. Existing literature approximates the large-scale OTM by a series of one-dimensional OTM problems through iterative random projection. Such methods, however, suffer from slow or none convergence in practice due to the nature of randomly selected projection directions. Instead, we propose an estimation method of large-scale OTM by combining the idea of projection pursuit regression and sufficient dimension reduction. The proposed method, named projection pursuit Monge map (PPMM), adaptively selects the most ``informative'' projection direction in each iteration. We theoretically show the proposed dimension reduction method can consistently estimate the most ``informative'' projection direction in each iteration. Furthermore, the PPMM algorithm weakly convergences to the target large-scale OTM in a reasonable number of steps. Empirically, PPMM is computationally easy and converges fast. We assess its finite sample performance through the applications of Wasserstein distance estimation and generative models.

Ensemble machine learning approach for screening of coronary heart disease based on echocardiography and risk factors

Background: Extensive clinical evidence suggests that a preventive screening of coronary heart disease (CHD) at an earlier stage can greatly reduce the mortality rate. We use 64 two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D-STE) features and seven clinical features to predict whether one has CHD. Methods: We develop a machine learning approach that integrates a number of popular classification methods together by model stacking, and generalize the traditional stacking method to a two-step stacking method to improve the diagnostic performance. Results: By borrowing strengths from multiple classification models through the proposed method, we improve the CHD classification accuracy from around 70% to 87.7% on the testing set. The sensitivity of the proposed method is 0.903 and the specificity is 0.843, with an AUC of 0.904, which is significantly higher than those of the individual classification models. Conclusions: Our work lays a foundation for the deployment of speckle tracking echocardiography-based screening tools for coronary heart disease.
