Adaptive Weight Assignment Scheme For Multi-task Learning

Aminul Huq, Mst Tasnim Pervin

Deep learning based models are used regularly in every applications nowadays. Generally we train a single model on a single task. However, we can train multiple tasks on a single model under multi-task learning settings. This provides us many benefits like lesser training time, training a single model for multiple tasks, reducing overfitting, improving performances etc. To train a model in multi-task learning settings we need to sum the loss values from different tasks. In vanilla multi-task learning settings we assign equal weights but since not all tasks are of similar difficulty we need to allocate more weight to tasks which are more difficult. Also improper weight assignment reduces the performance of the model. We propose a simple weight assignment scheme in this paper which improves the performance of the model and puts more emphasis on difficult tasks. We tested our methods performance on both image and textual data and also compared performance against two popular weight assignment methods. Empirical results suggest that our proposed method achieves better results compared to other popular methods.

RaceGAN: A Framework for Preserving Individuality while Converting Racial Information for Image-to-Image Translation

Mst Tasnim Pervin, George Bebis, Fang Jiang et al.

Generative adversarial networks (GANs) have demonstrated significant progress in unpaired image-to-image translation in recent years for several applications. CycleGAN was the first to lead the way, although it was restricted to a pair of domains. StarGAN overcame this constraint by tackling image-to-image translation across various domains, although it was not able to map in-depth low-level style changes for these domains. Style mapping via reference-guided image synthesis has been made possible by the innovations of StarGANv2 and StyleGAN. However, these models do not maintain individuality and need an extra reference image in addition to the input. Our study aims to translate racial traits by means of multi-domain image-to-image translation. We present RaceGAN, a novel framework capable of mapping style codes over several domains during racial attribute translation while maintaining individuality and high level semantics without relying on a reference image. RaceGAN outperforms other models in translating racial features (i.e., Asian, White, and Black) when tested on Chicago Face Dataset. We also give quantitative findings utilizing InceptionReNetv2-based classification to demonstrate the effectiveness of our racial translation. Moreover, we investigate how well the model partitions the latent space into distinct clusters of faces for each ethnic group.

Adversarial Attack Driven Data Augmentation for Accurate And Robust Medical Image Segmentation

Mst. Tasnim Pervin, Linmi Tao, Aminul Huq et al.

Segmentation is considered to be a very crucial task in medical image analysis. This task has been easier since deep learning models have taken over with its high performing behavior. However, deep learning models dependency on large data proves it to be an obstacle in medical image analysis because of insufficient data samples. Several data augmentation techniques have been used to mitigate this problem. We propose a new augmentation method by introducing adversarial learning attack techniques, specifically Fast Gradient Sign Method (FGSM). Furthermore, We have also introduced the concept of Inverse FGSM (InvFGSM), which works in the opposite manner of FGSM for the data augmentation. This two approaches worked together to improve the segmentation accuracy, as well as helped the model to gain robustness against adversarial attacks. The overall analysis of experiments indicates a novel use of adversarial machine learning along with robustness enhancement.

Adversarial Attacks and Defense on Texts: A Survey

Aminul Huq, Mst. Tasnim Pervin

Deep learning models have been used widely for various purposes in recent years in object recognition, self-driving cars, face recognition, speech recognition, sentiment analysis, and many others. However, in recent years it has been shown that these models possess weakness to noises which force the model to misclassify. This issue has been studied profoundly in the image and audio domain. Very little has been studied on this issue concerning textual data. Even less survey on this topic has been performed to understand different types of attacks and defense techniques. In this manuscript, we accumulated and analyzed different attacking techniques and various defense models to provide a more comprehensive idea. Later we point out some of the interesting findings of all papers and challenges that need to be overcome to move forward in this field.
