Interactive Instance Annotation with Siamese Networks

Xiang Xu, Ruotong Li, Mengjun Yi et al.

Annotating instance masks is time-consuming and labor-intensive. A promising solution is to predict contours using a deep learning model and then allow users to refine them. However, most existing methods focus on in-domain scenarios, limiting their effectiveness for cross-domain annotation tasks. In this paper, we propose SiamAnno, a framework inspired by the use of Siamese networks in object tracking. SiamAnno leverages one-shot learning to annotate previously unseen objects by taking a bounding box as input and predicting object boundaries, which can then be adjusted by annotators. Trained on one dataset and tested on another without fine-tuning, SiamAnno achieves state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance across multiple datasets, demonstrating its ability to handle domain and environment shifts in cross-domain tasks. We also provide more comprehensive results compared to previous work, establishing a strong baseline for future research. To our knowledge, SiamAnno is the first model to explore Siamese architecture for instance annotation.

Multi-Scale Dilated Convolution Network for Long-Term Time Series Forecasting

Feifei Li, Suhan Guo, Feng Han et al.

Accurate forecasting of long-term time series has important applications for decision making and planning. However, it remains challenging to capture the long-term dependencies in time series data. To better extract long-term dependencies, We propose Multi Scale Dilated Convolution Network (MSDCN), a method that utilizes a shallow dilated convolution architecture to capture the period and trend characteristics of long time series. We design different convolution blocks with exponentially growing dilations and varying kernel sizes to sample time series data at different scales. Furthermore, we utilize traditional autoregressive model to capture the linear relationships within the data. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we conduct experiments on eight challenging long-term time series forecasting benchmark datasets. The experimental results show that our approach outperforms the prior state-of-the-art approaches and shows significant inference speed improvements compared to several strong baseline methods.

IC Networks: Remodeling the Basic Unit for Convolutional Neural Networks

Junyi An, Fengshan Liu, Jian Zhao et al.

Convolutional neural network (CNN) is a class of artificial neural networks widely used in computer vision tasks. Most CNNs achieve excellent performance by stacking certain types of basic units. In addition to increasing the depth and width of the network, designing more effective basic units has become an important research topic. Inspired by the elastic collision model in physics, we present a general structure which can be integrated into the existing CNNs to improve their performance. We term it the "Inter-layer Collision" (IC) structure. Compared to the traditional convolution structure, the IC structure introduces nonlinearity and feature recalibration in the linear convolution operation, which can capture more fine-grained features. In addition, a new training method, namely weak logit distillation (WLD), is proposed to speed up the training of IC networks by extracting knowledge from pre-trained basic models. In the ImageNet experiment, we integrate the IC structure into ResNet-50 and reduce the top-1 error from 22.38% to 21.75%, which also catches up the top-1 error of ResNet-100 (21.75%) with nearly half of FLOPs.

IC Neuron: An Efficient Unit to Construct Neural Networks

Junyi An, Fengshan Liu, Jian Zhao et al.

As a popular machine learning method, neural networks can be used to solve many complex tasks. Their strong generalization ability comes from the representation ability of the basic neuron model. The most popular neuron is the MP neuron, which uses a linear transformation and a non-linear activation function to process the input successively. Inspired by the elastic collision model in physics, we propose a new neuron model that can represent more complex distributions. We term it Inter-layer collision (IC) neuron. The IC neuron divides the input space into multiple subspaces used to represent different linear transformations. This operation enhanced non-linear representation ability and emphasizes some useful input features for the given task. We build the IC networks by integrating the IC neurons into the fully-connected (FC), convolutional, and recurrent structures. The IC networks outperform the traditional networks in a wide range of experiments. We believe that the IC neuron can be a basic unit to build network structures.

Temporal Convolutional Attention-based Network For Sequence Modeling

Hongyan Hao, Yan Wang, Siqiao Xue et al.

With the development of feed-forward models, the default model for sequence modeling has gradually evolved to replace recurrent networks. Many powerful feed-forward models based on convolutional networks and attention mechanism were proposed and show more potential to handle sequence modeling tasks. We wonder that is there an architecture that can not only achieve an approximate substitution of recurrent network, but also absorb the advantages of feed-forward models. So we propose an exploratory architecture referred to Temporal Convolutional Attention-based Network (TCAN) which combines temporal convolutional network and attention mechanism. TCAN includes two parts, one is Temporal Attention (TA) which captures relevant features inside the sequence, the other is Enhanced Residual (ER) which extracts shallow layer's important information and transfers to deep layers. We improve the state-of-the-art results of bpc/perplexity to 30.28 on word-level PTB, 1.092 on character-level PTB, and 9.20 on WikiText-2.

IC-Network: Efficient Structure for Convolutional Neural Networks

Junyi An, Fengshan Liu, Jian Zhao et al.

Neural networks have been widely used, and most networks achieve excellent performance by stacking certain types of basic units. Compared to increasing the depth and width of the network, designing more effective basic units has become an important research topic. Inspired by the elastic collision model in physics, we present a universal structure that could be integrated into the existing network structures to speed up the training process and increase their generalization abilities. We term this structure the "Inter-layer Collision" (IC) structure. We built two kinds of basic computational units (IC layer and IC block) that compose the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) by combining the IC structure with the convolution operation. Compared to traditional convolutions, both of the proposed computational units have a stronger non-linear representation ability and can filter features useful for a given task. Using these computational units to build networks, we bring significant improvements in performance for existing state-of-the-art CNNs. On the imagenet experiment, we integrate the IC block into ResNet-50 and reduce the top-1 error from 22.85% to 21.49%, which also exceeds the top-1 error of ResNet-100 (21.75%).

Operation-aware Neural Networks for User Response Prediction

Yi Yang, Baile Xu, Furao Shen et al.

User response prediction makes a crucial contribution to the rapid development of online advertising system and recommendation system. The importance of learning feature interactions has been emphasized by many works. Many deep models are proposed to automatically learn high-order feature interactions. Since most features in advertising system and recommendation system are high-dimensional sparse features, deep models usually learn a low-dimensional distributed representation for each feature in the bottom layer. Besides traditional fully-connected architectures, some new operations, such as convolutional operations and product operations, are proposed to learn feature interactions better. In these models, the representation is shared among different operations. However, the best representation for different operations may be different. In this paper, we propose a new neural model named Operation-aware Neural Networks (ONN) which learns different representations for different operations. Our experimental results on two large-scale real-world ad click/conversion datasets demonstrate that ONN consistently outperforms the state-of-the-art models in both offline-training environment and online-training environment.
