FastBlend: a Powerful Model-Free Toolkit Making Video Stylization Easier

Zhongjie Duan, Chengyu Wang, Cen Chen et al.

With the emergence of diffusion models and rapid development in image processing, it has become effortless to generate fancy images in tasks such as style transfer and image editing. However, these impressive image processing approaches face consistency issues in video processing. In this paper, we propose a powerful model-free toolkit called FastBlend to address the consistency problem for video processing. Based on a patch matching algorithm, we design two inference modes, including blending and interpolation. In the blending mode, FastBlend eliminates video flicker by blending the frames within a sliding window. Moreover, we optimize both computational efficiency and video quality according to different application scenarios. In the interpolation mode, given one or more keyframes rendered by diffusion models, FastBlend can render the whole video. Since FastBlend does not modify the generation process of diffusion models, it exhibits excellent compatibility. Extensive experiments have demonstrated the effectiveness of FastBlend. In the blending mode, FastBlend outperforms existing methods for video deflickering and video synthesis. In the interpolation mode, FastBlend surpasses video interpolation and model-based video processing approaches. The source codes have been released on GitHub.

Talk Less, Fly Lighter: Autonomous Semantic Compression for UAV Swarm Communication via LLMs

Fei Lin, Tengchao Zhang, Qinghua Ni et al.

The rapid adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs) in unmanned systems has significantly enhanced the semantic understanding and autonomous task execution capabilities of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarms. However, limited communication bandwidth and the need for high-frequency interactions pose severe challenges to semantic information transmission within the swarm. This paper explores the feasibility of LLM-driven UAV swarms for autonomous semantic compression communication, aiming to reduce communication load while preserving critical task semantics. To this end, we construct four types of 2D simulation scenarios with different levels of environmental complexity and design a communication-execution pipeline that integrates system prompts with task instruction prompts. On this basis, we systematically evaluate the semantic compression performance of nine mainstream LLMs in different scenarios and analyze their adaptability and stability through ablation studies on environmental complexity and swarm size. Experimental results demonstrate that LLM-based UAV swarms have the potential to achieve efficient collaborative communication under bandwidth-constrained and multi-hop link conditions.

Diffutoon: High-Resolution Editable Toon Shading via Diffusion Models

Zhongjie Duan, Chengyu Wang, Cen Chen et al.

Toon shading is a type of non-photorealistic rendering task of animation. Its primary purpose is to render objects with a flat and stylized appearance. As diffusion models have ascended to the forefront of image synthesis methodologies, this paper delves into an innovative form of toon shading based on diffusion models, aiming to directly render photorealistic videos into anime styles. In video stylization, extant methods encounter persistent challenges, notably in maintaining consistency and achieving high visual quality. In this paper, we model the toon shading problem as four subproblems: stylization, consistency enhancement, structure guidance, and colorization. To address the challenges in video stylization, we propose an effective toon shading approach called \textit{Diffutoon}. Diffutoon is capable of rendering remarkably detailed, high-resolution, and extended-duration videos in anime style. It can also edit the content according to prompts via an additional branch. The efficacy of Diffutoon is evaluated through quantitive metrics and human evaluation. Notably, Diffutoon surpasses both open-source and closed-source baseline approaches in our experiments. Our work is accompanied by the release of both the source code and example videos on Github (Project page: https://ecnu-cilab.github.io/DiffutoonProjectPage/).

Fei Lin, Yonglin Tian, Tengchao Zhang et al.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) are increasingly important in dynamic environments such as logistics transportation and disaster response. However, current tasks often rely on human operators to monitor aerial videos and make operational decisions. This mode of human-machine collaboration suffers from significant limitations in efficiency and adaptability. In this paper, we present AirVista-II -- an end-to-end agentic system for embodied UAVs, designed to enable general-purpose semantic understanding and reasoning in dynamic scenes. The system integrates agent-based task identification and scheduling, multimodal perception mechanisms, and differentiated keyframe extraction strategies tailored for various temporal scenarios, enabling the efficient capture of critical scene information. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system achieves high-quality semantic understanding across diverse UAV-based dynamic scenarios under a zero-shot setting.

DiffChat: Learning to Chat with Text-to-Image Synthesis Models for Interactive Image Creation

Jiapeng Wang, Chengyu Wang, Tingfeng Cao et al.

We present DiffChat, a novel method to align Large Language Models (LLMs) to "chat" with prompt-as-input Text-to-Image Synthesis (TIS) models (e.g., Stable Diffusion) for interactive image creation. Given a raw prompt/image and a user-specified instruction, DiffChat can effectively make appropriate modifications and generate the target prompt, which can be leveraged to create the target image of high quality. To achieve this, we first collect an instruction-following prompt engineering dataset named InstructPE for the supervised training of DiffChat. Next, we propose a reinforcement learning framework with the feedback of three core criteria for image creation, i.e., aesthetics, user preference, and content integrity. It involves an action-space dynamic modification technique to obtain more relevant positive samples and harder negative samples during the off-policy sampling. Content integrity is also introduced into the value estimation function for further improvement of produced images. Our method can exhibit superior performance than baseline models and strong competitors based on both automatic and human evaluations, which fully demonstrates its effectiveness.

CoordField: Coordination Field for Agentic UAV Task Allocation In Low-altitude Urban Scenarios

Tengchao Zhang, Yonglin Tian, Fei Lin et al.

With the increasing demand for heterogeneous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarms to perform complex tasks in urban environments, system design now faces major challenges, including efficient semantic understanding, flexible task planning, and the ability to dynamically adjust coordination strategies in response to evolving environmental conditions and continuously changing task requirements. To address the limitations of existing methods, this paper proposes CoordField, a coordination field agent system for coordinating heterogeneous drone swarms in complex urban scenarios. In this system, large language models (LLMs) is responsible for interpreting high-level human instructions and converting them into executable commands for the UAV swarms, such as patrol and target tracking. Subsequently, a Coordination field mechanism is proposed to guide UAV motion and task selection, enabling decentralized and adaptive allocation of emergent tasks. A total of 50 rounds of comparative testing were conducted across different models in a 2D simulation space to evaluate their performance. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed system achieves superior performance in terms of task coverage, response time, and adaptability to dynamic changes.

Meta-KD: A Meta Knowledge Distillation Framework for Language Model Compression across Domains

Haojie Pan, Chengyu Wang, Minghui Qiu et al.

Pre-trained language models have been applied to various NLP tasks with considerable performance gains. However, the large model sizes, together with the long inference time, limit the deployment of such models in real-time applications. One line of model compression approaches considers knowledge distillation to distill large teacher models into small student models. Most of these studies focus on single-domain only, which ignores the transferable knowledge from other domains. We notice that training a teacher with transferable knowledge digested across domains can achieve better generalization capability to help knowledge distillation. Hence we propose a Meta-Knowledge Distillation (Meta-KD) framework to build a meta-teacher model that captures transferable knowledge across domains and passes such knowledge to students. Specifically, we explicitly force the meta-teacher to capture transferable knowledge at both instance-level and feature-level from multiple domains, and then propose a meta-distillation algorithm to learn single-domain student models with guidance from the meta-teacher. Experiments on public multi-domain NLP tasks show the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed Meta-KD framework. Further, we also demonstrate the capability of Meta-KD in the settings where the training data is scarce.

Learning to Expand: Reinforced Pseudo-relevance Feedback Selection for Information-seeking Conversations

Haojie Pan, Cen Chen, Chengyu Wang et al.

Information-seeking conversation systems are increasingly popular in real-world applications, especially for e-commerce companies. To retrieve appropriate responses for users, it is necessary to compute the matching degrees between candidate responses and users' queries with historical dialogue utterances. As the contexts are usually much longer than responses, it is thus necessary to expand the responses (usually short) with richer information. Recent studies on pseudo-relevance feedback (PRF) have demonstrated its effectiveness in query expansion for search engines, hence we consider expanding response using PRF information. However, existing PRF approaches are either based on heuristic rules or require heavy manual labeling, which are not suitable for solving our task. To alleviate this problem, we treat the PRF selection for response expansion as a learning task and propose a reinforced learning method that can be trained in an end-to-end manner without any human annotations. More specifically, we propose a reinforced selector to extract useful PRF terms to enhance response candidates and a BERT-based response ranker to rank the PRF-enhanced responses. The performance of the ranker serves as a reward to guide the selector to extract useful PRF terms, which boosts the overall task performance. Extensive experiments on both standard benchmarks and commercial datasets prove the superiority of our reinforced PRF term selector compared with other potential soft or hard selection methods. Both case studies and quantitative analysis show that our model is capable of selecting meaningful PRF terms to expand response candidates and also achieving the best results compared with all baselines on a variety of evaluation metrics. We have also deployed our method on online production in an e-commerce company, which shows a significant improvement over the existing online ranking system.

INT8 Winograd Acceleration for Conv1D Equipped ASR Models Deployed on Mobile Devices

Yiwu Yao, Yuchao Li, Chengyu Wang et al.

The intensive computation of Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models obstructs them from being deployed on mobile devices. In this paper, we present a novel quantized Winograd optimization pipeline, which combines the quantization and fast convolution to achieve efficient inference acceleration on mobile devices for ASR models. To avoid the information loss due to the combination of quantization and Winograd convolution, a Range-Scaled Quantization (RSQ) training method is proposed to expand the quantized numerical range and to distill knowledge from high-precision values. Moreover, an improved Conv1D equipped DFSMN (ConvDFSMN) model is designed for mobile deployment. We conduct extensive experiments on both ConvDFSMN and Wav2letter models. Results demonstrate the models can be effectively optimized with the proposed pipeline. Especially, Wav2letter achieves 1.48* speedup with an approximate 0.07% WER decrease on ARMv7-based mobile devices.

Knowledge-Empowered Representation Learning for Chinese Medical Reading Comprehension: Task, Model and Resources

Taolin Zhang, Chengyu Wang, Minghui Qiu et al.

Machine Reading Comprehension (MRC) aims to extract answers to questions given a passage. It has been widely studied recently, especially in open domains. However, few efforts have been made on closed-domain MRC, mainly due to the lack of large-scale training data. In this paper, we introduce a multi-target MRC task for the medical domain, whose goal is to predict answers to medical questions and the corresponding support sentences from medical information sources simultaneously, in order to ensure the high reliability of medical knowledge serving. A high-quality dataset is manually constructed for the purpose, named Multi-task Chinese Medical MRC dataset (CMedMRC), with detailed analysis conducted. We further propose the Chinese medical BERT model for the task (CMedBERT), which fuses medical knowledge into pre-trained language models by the dynamic fusion mechanism of heterogeneous features and the multi-task learning strategy. Experiments show that CMedBERT consistently outperforms strong baselines by fusing context-aware and knowledge-aware token representations.

Weakly Supervised Construction of ASR Systems with Massive Video Data

Mengli Cheng, Chengyu Wang, Xu Hu et al.

Building Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) systems from scratch is significantly challenging, mostly due to the time-consuming and financially-expensive process of annotating a large amount of audio data with transcripts. Although several unsupervised pre-training models have been proposed, applying such models directly might still be sub-optimal if more labeled, training data could be obtained without a large cost. In this paper, we present a weakly supervised framework for constructing ASR systems with massive video data. As videos often contain human-speech audios aligned with subtitles, we consider videos as an important knowledge source, and propose an effective approach to extract high-quality audios aligned with transcripts from videos based on Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The underlying ASR model can be fine-tuned to fit any domain-specific target training datasets after weakly supervised pre-training. Extensive experiments show that our framework can easily produce state-of-the-art results on six public datasets for Mandarin speech recognition.

Meta Fine-Tuning Neural Language Models for Multi-Domain Text Mining

Chengyu Wang, Minghui Qiu, Jun Huang et al.

Pre-trained neural language models bring significant improvement for various NLP tasks, by fine-tuning the models on task-specific training sets. During fine-tuning, the parameters are initialized from pre-trained models directly, which ignores how the learning process of similar NLP tasks in different domains is correlated and mutually reinforced. In this paper, we propose an effective learning procedure named Meta Fine-Tuning (MFT), served as a meta-learner to solve a group of similar NLP tasks for neural language models. Instead of simply multi-task training over all the datasets, MFT only learns from typical instances of various domains to acquire highly transferable knowledge. It further encourages the language model to encode domain-invariant representations by optimizing a series of novel domain corruption loss functions. After MFT, the model can be fine-tuned for each domain with better parameter initializations and higher generalization ability. We implement MFT upon BERT to solve several multi-domain text mining tasks. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of MFT and its usefulness for few-shot learning.

AdaBERT: Task-Adaptive BERT Compression with Differentiable Neural Architecture Search

Daoyuan Chen, Yaliang Li, Minghui Qiu et al.

Large pre-trained language models such as BERT have shown their effectiveness in various natural language processing tasks. However, the huge parameter size makes them difficult to be deployed in real-time applications that require quick inference with limited resources. Existing methods compress BERT into small models while such compression is task-independent, i.e., the same compressed BERT for all different downstream tasks. Motivated by the necessity and benefits of task-oriented BERT compression, we propose a novel compression method, AdaBERT, that leverages differentiable Neural Architecture Search to automatically compress BERT into task-adaptive small models for specific tasks. We incorporate a task-oriented knowledge distillation loss to provide search hints and an efficiency-aware loss as search constraints, which enables a good trade-off between efficiency and effectiveness for task-adaptive BERT compression. We evaluate AdaBERT on several NLP tasks, and the results demonstrate that those task-adaptive compressed models are 12.7x to 29.3x faster than BERT in inference time and 11.5x to 17.0x smaller in terms of parameter size, while comparable performance is maintained.

Review Helpfulness Prediction with Embedding-Gated CNN

Cen Chen, Minghui Qiu, Yinfei Yang et al.

Product reviews, in the form of texts dominantly, significantly help consumers finalize their purchasing decisions. Thus, it is important for e-commerce companies to predict review helpfulness to present and recommend reviews in a more informative manner. In this work, we introduce a convolutional neural network model that is able to extract abstract features from multi-granularity representations. Inspired by the fact that different words contribute to the meaning of a sentence differently, we consider to learn word-level embedding-gates for all the representations. Furthermore, as it is common that some product domains/categories have rich user reviews, other domains not. To help domains with less sufficient data, we integrate our model into a cross-domain relationship learning framework for effectively transferring knowledge from other domains. Extensive experiments show that our model yields better performance than the existing methods.

Transfer Learning for Context-Aware Question Matching in Information-seeking Conversations in E-commerce

Minghui Qiu, Liu Yang, Feng Ji et al.

Building multi-turn information-seeking conversation systems is an important and challenging research topic. Although several advanced neural text matching models have been proposed for this task, they are generally not efficient for industrial applications. Furthermore, they rely on a large amount of labeled data, which may not be available in real-world applications. To alleviate these problems, we study transfer learning for multi-turn information seeking conversations in this paper. We first propose an efficient and effective multi-turn conversation model based on convolutional neural networks. After that, we extend our model to adapt the knowledge learned from a resource-rich domain to enhance the performance. Finally, we deployed our model in an industrial chatbot called AliMe Assist (https://consumerservice.taobao.com/online-help) and observed a significant improvement over the existing online model.
