Evaluating the Robustness of Conversational Recommender Systems by Adversarial Examples

Conversational recommender systems (CRSs) are improving rapidly, according to the standard recommendation accuracy metrics. However, it is essential to make sure that these systems are robust in interacting with users including regular and malicious users who want to attack the system by feeding the system modified input data. In this paper, we propose an adversarial evaluation scheme including four scenarios in two categories and automatically generate adversarial examples to evaluate the robustness of these systems in the face of different input data. By executing these adversarial examples we can compare the ability of different conversational recommender systems to satisfy the user's preferences. We evaluate three CRSs by the proposed adversarial examples on two datasets. Our results show that none of these systems are robust and reliable to the adversarial examples.

Asking Clarifying Questions for Preference Elicitation With Large Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) have made it possible for recommendation systems to interact with users in open-ended conversational interfaces. In order to personalize LLM responses, it is crucial to elicit user preferences, especially when there is limited user history. One way to get more information is to present clarifying questions to the user. However, generating effective sequential clarifying questions across various domains remains a challenge. To address this, we introduce a novel approach for training LLMs to ask sequential questions that reveal user preferences. Our method follows a two-stage process inspired by diffusion models. Starting from a user profile, the forward process generates clarifying questions to obtain answers and then removes those answers step by step, serving as a way to add ``noise'' to the user profile. The reverse process involves training a model to ``denoise'' the user profile by learning to ask effective clarifying questions. Our results show that our method significantly improves the LLM's proficiency in asking funnel questions and eliciting user preferences effectively.

What LLMs Miss in Recommendations: Bridging the Gap with Retrieval-Augmented Collaborative Signals

User-item interactions contain rich collaborative signals that form the backbone of many successful recommender systems. While recent work has explored the use of large language models (LLMs) for recommendation, it remains unclear whether LLMs can effectively reason over this type of collaborative information. In this paper, we conduct a systematic comparison between LLMs and classical matrix factorization (MF) models to assess LLMs' ability to leverage user-item interaction data. We further introduce a simple retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) method that enhances LLMs by grounding their predictions in structured interaction data. Our experiments reveal that current LLMs often fall short in capturing collaborative patterns inherent to MF models, but that our RAG-based approach substantially improves recommendation quality-highlighting a promising direction for future LLM-based recommenders.
