Chatmap : Large Language Model Interaction with Cartographic DataEren Unlu
The swift advancement and widespread availability of foundational Large Language Models (LLMs), complemented by robust fine-tuning methodologies, have catalyzed their adaptation for innovative and industrious applications. Enabling LLMs to recognize and interpret geospatial data, while offering a linguistic access to vast cartographic datasets, is of significant importance. OpenStreetMap (OSM) is the most ambitious open-source global initiative offering detailed urban and rural geographic data, curated by a community of over 10 million contributors, which constitutes a great potential for LLM applications. In this study, we demonstrate the proof of concept and details of the process of fine-tuning a relatively small scale (1B parameters) LLM with a relatively small artificial dataset curated by a more capable teacher model, in order to provide a linguistic interface to the OSM data of an arbitrary urban region. Through this interface, users can inquire about a location's attributes, covering a wide spectrum of concepts, such as its touristic appeal or the potential profitability of various businesses in that vicinity. The study aims to provide an initial guideline for such generative artificial intelligence (AI) adaptations and demonstrate early signs of useful emerging abilities in this context even in minimal computational settings. The embeddings of artificially curated prompts including OSM data are also investigated in detail, which might be instrumental for potential geospatially aware urban Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) applications.

Know When to Trust the Skill: Delayed Appraisal and Epistemic Vigilance for Single-Agent LLMsEren Unlu
As large language models (LLMs) transition into autonomous agents integrated with extensive tool ecosystems, traditional routing heuristics increasingly succumb to context pollution and "overthinking". We argue that the bottleneck is not a deficit in algorithmic capability or skill diversity, but the absence of disciplined second-order metacognitive governance. In this paper, our scientific contribution focuses on the computational translation of human cognitive control - specifically, delayed appraisal, epistemic vigilance, and region-of-proximal offloading - into a single-agent architecture. We introduce MESA-S (Metacognitive Skills for Agents, Single-agent), a preliminary framework that shifts scalar confidence estimation into a vector separating self-confidence (parametric certainty) from source-confidence (trust in retrieved external procedures). By formalizing a delayed procedural probe mechanism and introducing Metacognitive Skill Cards, MESA-S decouples the awareness of a skill's utility from its token-intensive execution. Evaluated under an In-Context Static Benchmark Evaluation natively executed via Gemini 3.1 Pro, our early results suggest that explicitly programming trust provenance and delayed escalation mitigates supply-chain vulnerabilities, prunes unnecessary reasoning loops, and prevents offloading-induced confidence inflation. This architecture offers a scientifically cautious, behaviorally anchored step toward reliable, epistemically vigilant single-agent orchestration.

Don't Start What You Can't Finish: A Counterfactual Audit of Support-State Triage in LLM AgentsEren Unlu
Current agent evaluations largely reward execution on fully specified tasks, while recent work studies clarification [11, 22, 2], capability awareness [9, 1], abstention [8, 14], and search termination [20, 5] mostly in isolation. This leaves open whether agents can diagnose why a task is blocked before acting. We introduce the Support-State Triage Audit (SSTA-32), a matched-item diagnostic framework in which minimal counterfactual edits flip the same base request across four support states: Complete (ANSWER), Clarifiable (CLARIFY), Support-Blocked (REQUEST SUPPORT), and Unsupported-Now (ABSTAIN). We evaluate a frontier model under four prompting conditions - Direct, Action-Only, Confidence-Only, and a typed Preflight Support Check (PSC) - using Dual-Persona Auto-Auditing (DPAA) with deterministic heuristic scoring. Default execution overcommits heavily on non-complete tasks (41.7% overcommitment rate). Scalar confidence mapping avoids overcommitment but collapses the three-way deferral space (58.3% typed deferral accuracy). Conversely, both Action-Only and PSC achieve 91.7% typed deferral accuracy by surfacing the categorical ontology in the prompt. Targeted ablations confirm that removing the support-sufficiency dimension selectively degrades REQUEST SUPPORT accuracy, while removing the evidence-sufficiency dimension triggers systematic overcommitment on unsupported items. Because DPAA operates within a single context window, these results represent upper-bound capability estimates; nonetheless, the structural findings indicate that frontier models possess strong latent triage capabilities that require explicit categorical decision paths to activate safely.

Translation Aligned Sentence Embeddings for Turkish LanguageEren Unlu, Unver Ciftci
Due to the limited availability of high quality datasets for training sentence embeddings in Turkish, we propose a training methodology and a regimen to develop a sentence embedding model. The central idea is simple but effective : is to fine-tune a pretrained encoder-decoder model in two consecutive stages, where the first stage involves aligning the embedding space with translation pairs. Thanks to this alignment, the prowess of the main model can be better projected onto the target language in a sentence embedding setting where it can be fine-tuned with high accuracy in short duration with limited target language dataset.

FootGPT : A Large Language Model Development Experiment on a Minimal SettingEren Unlu
With recent empirical observations, it has been argued that the most significant aspect of developing accurate language models may be the proper dataset content and training strategy compared to the number of neural parameters, training duration or dataset size. Following this argument, we opted to fine tune a one billion parameter size trained general purpose causal language model with a dataset curated on team statistics of the Italian football league first ten game weeks, using low rank adaptation. The limited training dataset was compiled based on a framework where a powerful commercial large language model provides distilled paragraphs and question answer pairs as intended. The training duration was kept relatively short to provide a basis for our minimal setting exploration. We share our key observations on the process related to developing a specific purpose language model which is intended to interpret soccer data with constrained resources in this article.

Structural Embeddings of Tools for Large Language ModelsEren Unlu
It is evident that the current state of Large Language Models (LLMs) necessitates the incorporation of external tools. The lack of straightforward algebraic and logical reasoning is well documented and prompted researchers to develop frameworks which allow LLMs to operate via external tools. The ontological nature of tool utilization for a specific task can be well formulated with a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). The central aim of the paper is to highlight the importance of graph based approaches to LLM-tool interaction in near future. We propose an exemplary framework to guide the orchestration of exponentially increasing numbers of external tools with LLMs,where objectives and functionalities of tools are graph encoded hierarchically. Assuming that textual segments of a Chain-of-Thought (CoT) can be imagined as a tool as defined here, the graph based framework can pave new avenues in that particular direction as well.

Entity Embeddings : Perspectives Towards an Omni-Modality Era for Large Language ModelsEren Unlu, Unver Ciftci
Large Language Models (LLMs) are evolving to integrate multiple modalities, such as text, image, and audio into a unified linguistic space. We envision a future direction based on this framework where conceptual entities defined in sequences of text can also be imagined as modalities. Such a formulation has the potential to overcome the cognitive and computational limitations of current models. Several illustrative examples of such potential implicit modalities are given. Along with vast promises of the hypothesized structure, expected challenges are discussed as well.

Spherical Position Encoding for TransformersEren Unlu
Position encoding is the primary mechanism which induces notion of sequential order for input tokens in transformer architectures. Even though this formulation in the original transformer paper has yielded plausible performance for general purpose language understanding and generation, several new frameworks such as Rotary Position Embedding (RoPE) are proposed for further enhancement. In this paper, we introduce the notion of "geotokens" which are input elements for transformer architectures, each representing an information related to a geological location. Unlike the natural language the sequential position is not important for the model but the geographical coordinates are. In order to induce the concept of relative position for such a setting and maintain the proportion between the physical distance and distance on embedding space, we formulate a position encoding mechanism based on RoPE architecture which is adjusted for spherical coordinates.

Preservation Is Not Enough for Width Growth: Regime-Sensitive Selection of Dense LM Warm StartsEren Unlu
Width expansion offers a practical route to reuse smaller causal-language-model checkpoints, but selecting a widened warm start is not solved by zero-step preservation alone. We study dense width growth as a candidate-selection problem over full training states, including copied weights, optimizer moments, and scheduler state. In a small-scale TinyStories proxy, we compare exact-copy, perturbative, asymmetric-reset, and structured non-clone warm starts under matched continuation budgets. We evaluate zero-step preservation, short-lag probe metrics, and downstream continuation utility in deterministic and stochastic regimes. The picture is mixed and partially replicated through a reduced-pool seed-1 check. Exact-copy symmetric warm starts rank first in every completed 16-step probe and in the completed stochastic 128-step continuations at seed-0 steps 1000 and 2000 plus reduced seed-1 step 2000. By contrast, the structured non-clone challenger wins deterministic 128-step continuation. Early escape from the inherited cloned subspace is therefore not a universal selector: it helps in long deterministic continuation, but it misleads at short lag and under stochastic continuation. The result is narrow but useful: for dense width growth at this scale, preservation is not a universal ranking criterion, and the best replacement signal depends on both regime and lag budget.

Loop-Extrusion Linkage: Spectral Ordering and Interval-Based Structure Discovery for Continuous OptimizationEren Unlu
The rapid growth of nature-inspired metaheuristics has exposed a persistent gap between metaphorical novelty and genuine algorithmic advancement. Motivated by the biophysics of chromatin loop extrusion -- a well-characterized genome-folding process driven by SMC motor complexes and conditional barriers -- we introduce the Loop-Extrusion Linkage (LEL) operator, a structure-learning wrapper that combines online variable-interaction estimation, spectral seriation via the Fiedler vector, and adaptive interval-based subspace search. LEL constructs a sparse interaction graph from successful optimization steps, derives a heuristic one-dimensional variable ordering, and generates overlapping evaluation subsets through stochastic interval growth modulated by learned boundary-crossing probabilities. We evaluate LEL on six synthetic diagnostic functions at d=96 designed to probe specific structural hypotheses -- contiguous blocks, permuted blocks, overlapping windows, banded chains, separable controls, and dense rotated couplings -- across 10^4 and 5 x 10^4 evaluation budgets with 15 independent seeds. Results are assessed via the Wilcoxon signed-rank test with Holm-Bonferroni correction and Vargha-Delaney A12 effect sizes. At 10^4 evaluations, Full LEL achieves the best median log-gap on 3 of 6 functions significantly outperforming all ablations and jSO on the structured tasks. At 5 x 10^4 evaluations, simpler ablations and baselines often surpass the full method, indicating that the adaptive barrier mechanism may over-constrain late-stage search on uniformly partitioned landscapes. The strongest supported finding is that learned spectral ordering consistently improves over graph-only grouping and random variable ordering, suggesting that interaction-graph seriation is the most valuable component of the proposed framework.

Geotokens and GeotransformersEren Unlu
In transformer architectures, position encoding primarily provides a sense of sequence for input tokens. While the original transformer paper's method has shown satisfactory results in general language processing tasks, there have been new proposals, such as Rotary Position Embedding (RoPE), for further improvement. This paper presents geotokens, input components for transformers, each linked to a specific geological location. Unlike typical language sequences, for these tokens, the order is not as vital as the geographical coordinates themselves. To represent the relative position in this context and to keep a balance between the real world distance and the distance in the embedding space, we design a position encoding approach drawing from the RoPE structure but tailored for spherical coordinates.
