Exploring Dual-task Correlation for Pose Guided Person Image GenerationPengze Zhang, Lingxiao Yang, Jianhuang Lai et al.
Pose Guided Person Image Generation (PGPIG) is the task of transforming a person image from the source pose to a given target pose. Most of the existing methods only focus on the ill-posed source-to-target task and fail to capture reasonable texture mapping. To address this problem, we propose a novel Dual-task Pose Transformer Network (DPTN), which introduces an auxiliary task (i.e., source-to-source task) and exploits the dual-task correlation to promote the performance of PGPIG. The DPTN is of a Siamese structure, containing a source-to-source self-reconstruction branch, and a transformation branch for source-to-target generation. By sharing partial weights between them, the knowledge learned by the source-to-source task can effectively assist the source-to-target learning. Furthermore, we bridge the two branches with a proposed Pose Transformer Module (PTM) to adaptively explore the correlation between features from dual tasks. Such correlation can establish the fine-grained mapping of all the pixels between the sources and the targets, and promote the source texture transmission to enhance the details of the generated target images. Extensive experiments show that our DPTN outperforms state-of-the-arts in terms of both PSNR and LPIPS. In addition, our DPTN only contains 9.79 million parameters, which is significantly smaller than other approaches. Self-supervised Image-specific Prototype Exploration for Weakly Supervised Semantic SegmentationQi Chen, Lingxiao Yang, Jianhuang Lai et al.
Weakly Supervised Semantic Segmentation (WSSS) based on image-level labels has attracted much attention due to low annotation costs. Existing methods often rely on Class Activation Mapping (CAM) that measures the correlation between image pixels and classifier weight. However, the classifier focuses only on the discriminative regions while ignoring other useful information in each image, resulting in incomplete localization maps. To address this issue, we propose a Self-supervised Image-specific Prototype Exploration (SIPE) that consists of an Image-specific Prototype Exploration (IPE) and a General-Specific Consistency (GSC) loss. Specifically, IPE tailors prototypes for every image to capture complete regions, formed our Image-Specific CAM (IS-CAM), which is realized by two sequential steps. In addition, GSC is proposed to construct the consistency of general CAM and our specific IS-CAM, which further optimizes the feature representation and empowers a self-correction ability of prototype exploration. Extensive experiments are conducted on PASCAL VOC 2012 and MS COCO 2014 segmentation benchmark and results show our SIPE achieves new state-of-the-art performance using only image-level labels. Survey on Adversarial Attack and Defense for Medical Image Analysis: Methods and ChallengesJunhao Dong, Junxi Chen, Xiaohua Xie et al.
Deep learning techniques have achieved superior performance in computer-aided medical image analysis, yet they are still vulnerable to imperceptible adversarial attacks, resulting in potential misdiagnosis in clinical practice. Oppositely, recent years have also witnessed remarkable progress in defense against these tailored adversarial examples in deep medical diagnosis systems. In this exposition, we present a comprehensive survey on recent advances in adversarial attacks and defenses for medical image analysis with a systematic taxonomy in terms of the application scenario. We also provide a unified framework for different types of adversarial attack and defense methods in the context of medical image analysis. For a fair comparison, we establish a new benchmark for adversarially robust medical diagnosis models obtained by adversarial training under various scenarios. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first survey paper that provides a thorough evaluation of adversarially robust medical diagnosis models. By analyzing qualitative and quantitative results, we conclude this survey with a detailed discussion of current challenges for adversarial attack and defense in medical image analysis systems to shed light on future research directions. Restricted Black-box Adversarial Attack Against DeepFake Face SwappingJunhao Dong, Yuan Wang, Jianhuang Lai et al.
DeepFake face swapping presents a significant threat to online security and social media, which can replace the source face in an arbitrary photo/video with the target face of an entirely different person. In order to prevent this fraud, some researchers have begun to study the adversarial methods against DeepFake or face manipulation. However, existing works focus on the white-box setting or the black-box setting driven by abundant queries, which severely limits the practical application of these methods. To tackle this problem, we introduce a practical adversarial attack that does not require any queries to the facial image forgery model. Our method is built on a substitute model persuing for face reconstruction and then transfers adversarial examples from the substitute model directly to inaccessible black-box DeepFake models. Specially, we propose the Transferable Cycle Adversary Generative Adversarial Network (TCA-GAN) to construct the adversarial perturbation for disrupting unknown DeepFake systems. We also present a novel post-regularization module for enhancing the transferability of generated adversarial examples. To comprehensively measure the effectiveness of our approaches, we construct a challenging benchmark of DeepFake adversarial attacks for future development. Extensive experiments impressively show that the proposed adversarial attack method makes the visual quality of DeepFake face images plummet so that they are easier to be detected by humans and algorithms. Moreover, we demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can be generalized to offer face image protection against various face translation methods.

Cross-Camera Trajectories Help Person Retrieval in a Camera NetworkXin Zhang, Xiaohua Xie, Jianhuang Lai et al.
We are concerned with retrieving a query person from multiple videos captured by a non-overlapping camera network. Existing methods often rely on purely visual matching or consider temporal constraints but ignore the spatial information of the camera network. To address this issue, we propose a pedestrian retrieval framework based on cross-camera trajectory generation, which integrates both temporal and spatial information. To obtain pedestrian trajectories, we propose a novel cross-camera spatio-temporal model that integrates pedestrians' walking habits and the path layout between cameras to form a joint probability distribution. Such a spatio-temporal model among a camera network can be specified using sparsely sampled pedestrian data. Based on the spatio-temporal model, cross-camera trajectories can be extracted by the conditional random field model and further optimized by restricted non-negative matrix factorization. Finally, a trajectory re-ranking technique is proposed to improve the pedestrian retrieval results. To verify the effectiveness of our method, we construct the first cross-camera pedestrian trajectory dataset, the Person Trajectory Dataset, in real surveillance scenarios. Extensive experiments verify the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method.

Texture-guided Saliency Distilling for Unsupervised Salient Object DetectionHuajun Zhou, Bo Qiao, Lingxiao Yang et al.
Deep Learning-based Unsupervised Salient Object Detection (USOD) mainly relies on the noisy saliency pseudo labels that have been generated from traditional handcraft methods or pre-trained networks. To cope with the noisy labels problem, a class of methods focus on only easy samples with reliable labels but ignore valuable knowledge in hard samples. In this paper, we propose a novel USOD method to mine rich and accurate saliency knowledge from both easy and hard samples. First, we propose a Confidence-aware Saliency Distilling (CSD) strategy that scores samples conditioned on samples' confidences, which guides the model to distill saliency knowledge from easy samples to hard samples progressively. Second, we propose a Boundary-aware Texture Matching (BTM) strategy to refine the boundaries of noisy labels by matching the textures around the predicted boundary. Extensive experiments on RGB, RGB-D, RGB-T, and video SOD benchmarks prove that our method achieves state-of-the-art USOD performance.

The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend: Exploring Inverse Adversaries for Improving Adversarial TrainingJunhao Dong, Seyed-Mohsen Moosavi-Dezfooli, Jianhuang Lai et al.
Although current deep learning techniques have yielded superior performance on various computer vision tasks, yet they are still vulnerable to adversarial examples. Adversarial training and its variants have been shown to be the most effective approaches to defend against adversarial examples. These methods usually regularize the difference between output probabilities for an adversarial and its corresponding natural example. However, it may have a negative impact if the model misclassifies a natural example. To circumvent this issue, we propose a novel adversarial training scheme that encourages the model to produce similar outputs for an adversarial example and its ``inverse adversarial'' counterpart. These samples are generated to maximize the likelihood in the neighborhood of natural examples. Extensive experiments on various vision datasets and architectures demonstrate that our training method achieves state-of-the-art robustness as well as natural accuracy. Furthermore, using a universal version of inverse adversarial examples, we improve the performance of single-step adversarial training techniques at a low computational cost.

Progressive Pretext Task Learning for Human Trajectory PredictionXiaotong Lin, Tianming Liang, Jianhuang Lai et al.
Human trajectory prediction is a practical task of predicting the future positions of pedestrians on the road, which typically covers all temporal ranges from short-term to long-term within a trajectory. However, existing works attempt to address the entire trajectory prediction with a singular, uniform training paradigm, neglecting the distinction between short-term and long-term dynamics in human trajectories. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a novel Progressive Pretext Task learning (PPT) framework, which progressively enhances the model's capacity of capturing short-term dynamics and long-term dependencies for the final entire trajectory prediction. Specifically, we elaborately design three stages of training tasks in the PPT framework. In the first stage, the model learns to comprehend the short-term dynamics through a stepwise next-position prediction task. In the second stage, the model is further enhanced to understand long-term dependencies through a destination prediction task. In the final stage, the model aims to address the entire future trajectory task by taking full advantage of the knowledge from previous stages. To alleviate the knowledge forgetting, we further apply a cross-task knowledge distillation. Additionally, we design a Transformer-based trajectory predictor, which is able to achieve highly efficient two-step reasoning by integrating a destination-driven prediction strategy and a group of learnable prompt embeddings. Extensive experiments on popular benchmarks have demonstrated that our proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance with high efficiency. GRKV: Global Regression for Training-Free KV Cache Compression in Long-Context LLMsJunjie Peng, You Wu, Haoyi Wu et al.
Large language models (LLMs) with extended context lengths rely on the key-value (KV) cache to support attention over prior tokens. However, maintaining the KV cache incurs substantial memory overhead, motivating KV-cache compression methods that enforce a fixed budget through eviction and merging. Modern eviction methods increasingly adopt span-based retention because preserving contiguous spans is empirically effective and better preserves semantic coherence. Yet, when combined with post-eviction merging, span-based retention concentrates merges onto a small set of span-boundary carrier tokens, producing a highly imbalanced merge pattern that exacerbates over-merging and increases information loss. To address this imbalance, we propose GRKV (Global Regression for KV Cache), a training-free KV-cache merging method that directly minimizes the discrepancy between compressed-cache and full-cache attention outputs. GRKV uses ridge-regression-based merge steps to distribute information from evicted tokens across retained tokens, while regularizing the updates to prevent over-smoothing. Across the LongBench and RULER long-context benchmarks, GRKV is the only merging method that improves overall performance with minimal overhead.

SNN2ANN: A Fast and Memory-Efficient Training Framework for Spiking Neural NetworksJianxiong Tang, Jianhuang Lai, Xiaohua Xie et al.
Spiking neural networks are efficient computation models for low-power environments. Spike-based BP algorithms and ANN-to-SNN (ANN2SNN) conversions are successful techniques for SNN training. Nevertheless, the spike-base BP training is slow and requires large memory costs. Though ANN2NN provides a low-cost way to train SNNs, it requires many inference steps to mimic the well-trained ANN for good performance. In this paper, we propose a SNN-to-ANN (SNN2ANN) framework to train the SNN in a fast and memory-efficient way. The SNN2ANN consists of 2 components: a) a weight sharing architecture between ANN and SNN and b) spiking mapping units. Firstly, the architecture trains the weight-sharing parameters on the ANN branch, resulting in fast training and low memory costs for SNN. Secondly, the spiking mapping units ensure that the activation values of the ANN are the spiking features. As a result, the classification error of the SNN can be optimized by training the ANN branch. Besides, we design an adaptive threshold adjustment (ATA) algorithm to address the noisy spike problem. Experiment results show that our SNN2ANN-based models perform well on the benchmark datasets (CIFAR10, CIFAR100, and Tiny-ImageNet). Moreover, the SNN2ANN can achieve comparable accuracy under 0.625x time steps, 0.377x training time, 0.27x GPU memory costs, and 0.33x spike activities of the Spike-based BP model.

View-Aware Semantic Alignment for Aerial-Ground Person Re-IdentificationQuan Zhang, Zeqiang Cai, Peiming Zhao et al.
Aerial-Ground Person Re-Identification (AGPReID) remains highly challenging due to drastic viewpoint variations between drones and fixed cameras. Existing methods typically follow a view-invariant paradigm, aligning shared features across views to achieve robustness. However, view-invariant inherently enforces part-level alignment, which ignores view-specific cues and discriminative identity information. To this end, this work proposes ViSA (View-aware Semantic Alignment), a view-aware framework that achieves cross-view semantic consistency containing an Expert-driven Token Generation Module (ETGM) and a Dual-branch Local Fusion Module (DLFM). Technically, the former constructs a set of view-aware experts to generate adaptive semantic queries that perceive viewpoint-specific patterns, while the latter leverages graph reasoning to extract and align local regions responsive to different experts. Extensive experiments on three AGPReID benchmarks including AG-ReID.v2, CARGO and LAGPeR demonstrate that ViSA consistently achieves superior performance, with a notable 10.06\% mAP improvement on the challenging CARGO cross-view protocol. Hard-normal Example-aware Template Mutual Matching for Industrial Anomaly DetectionZixuan Chen, Xiaohua Xie, Lingxiao Yang et al.
Anomaly detectors are widely used in industrial manufacturing to detect and localize unknown defects in query images. These detectors are trained on anomaly-free samples and have successfully distinguished anomalies from most normal samples. However, hard-normal examples are scattered and far apart from most normal samples, and thus they are often mistaken for anomalies by existing methods. To address this issue, we propose Hard-normal Example-aware Template Mutual Matching (HETMM), an efficient framework to build a robust prototype-based decision boundary. Specifically, HETMM employs the proposed Affine-invariant Template Mutual Matching (ATMM) to mitigate the affection brought by the affine transformations and easy-normal examples. By mutually matching the pixel-level prototypes within the patch-level search spaces between query and template set, ATMM can accurately distinguish between hard-normal examples and anomalies, achieving low false-positive and missed-detection rates. In addition, we also propose PTS to compress the original template set for speed-up. PTS selects cluster centres and hard-normal examples to preserve the original decision boundary, allowing this tiny set to achieve comparable performance to the original one. Extensive experiments demonstrate that HETMM outperforms state-of-the-art methods, while using a 60-sheet tiny set can achieve competitive performance and real-time inference speed (around 26.1 FPS) on a Quadro 8000 RTX GPU. HETMM is training-free and can be hot-updated by directly inserting novel samples into the template set, which can promptly address some incremental learning issues in industrial manufacturing.

Understanding Weight Similarity of Neural Networks via Chain Normalization Rule and Hypothesis-Training-TestingGuangcong Wang, Guangrun Wang, Wenqi Liang et al.
We present a weight similarity measure method that can quantify the weight similarity of non-convex neural networks. To understand the weight similarity of different trained models, we propose to extract the feature representation from the weights of neural networks. We first normalize the weights of neural networks by introducing a chain normalization rule, which is used for weight representation learning and weight similarity measure. We extend the traditional hypothesis-testing method to a hypothesis-training-testing statistical inference method to validate the hypothesis on the weight similarity of neural networks. With the chain normalization rule and the new statistical inference, we study the weight similarity measure on Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN), and find that the weights of an identical neural network optimized with the Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) algorithm converge to a similar local solution in a metric space. The weight similarity measure provides more insight into the local solutions of neural networks. Experiments on several datasets consistently validate the hypothesis of weight similarity measure.

APRF: Anti-Aliasing Projection Representation Field for Inverse Problem in ImagingZixuan Chen, Lingxiao Yang, Jianhuang Lai et al.
Sparse-view Computed Tomography (SVCT) reconstruction is an ill-posed inverse problem in imaging that aims to acquire high-quality CT images based on sparsely-sampled measurements. Recent works use Implicit Neural Representations (INRs) to build the coordinate-based mapping between sinograms and CT images. However, these methods have not considered the correlation between adjacent projection views, resulting in aliasing artifacts on SV sinograms. To address this issue, we propose a self-supervised SVCT reconstruction method -- Anti-Aliasing Projection Representation Field (APRF), which can build the continuous representation between adjacent projection views via the spatial constraints. Specifically, APRF only needs SV sinograms for training, which first employs a line-segment sampling module to estimate the distribution of projection views in a local region, and then synthesizes the corresponding sinogram values using center-based line integral module. After training APRF on a single SV sinogram itself, it can synthesize the corresponding dense-view (DV) sinogram with consistent continuity. High-quality CT images can be obtained by applying re-projection techniques on the predicted DV sinograms. Extensive experiments on CT images demonstrate that APRF outperforms state-of-the-art methods, yielding more accurate details and fewer artifacts. Our code will be publicly available soon.

View-decoupled Transformer for Person Re-identification under Aerial-ground Camera NetworkQuan Zhang, Lei Wang, Vishal M. Patel et al.
Existing person re-identification methods have achieved remarkable advances in appearance-based identity association across homogeneous cameras, such as ground-ground matching. However, as a more practical scenario, aerial-ground person re-identification (AGPReID) among heterogeneous cameras has received minimal attention. To alleviate the disruption of discriminative identity representation by dramatic view discrepancy as the most significant challenge in AGPReID, the view-decoupled transformer (VDT) is proposed as a simple yet effective framework. Two major components are designed in VDT to decouple view-related and view-unrelated features, namely hierarchical subtractive separation and orthogonal loss, where the former separates these two features inside the VDT, and the latter constrains these two to be independent. In addition, we contribute a large-scale AGPReID dataset called CARGO, consisting of five/eight aerial/ground cameras, 5,000 identities, and 108,563 images. Experiments on two datasets show that VDT is a feasible and effective solution for AGPReID, surpassing the previous method on mAP/Rank1 by up to 5.0%/2.7% on CARGO and 3.7%/5.2% on AG-ReID, keeping the same magnitude of computational complexity. SynPO: Synergizing Descriptiveness and Preference Optimization for Video Detailed CaptioningJisheng Dang, Yizhou Zhang, Hao Ye et al.
Fine-grained video captioning aims to generate detailed, temporally coherent descriptions of video content. However, existing methods struggle to capture subtle video dynamics and rich detailed information. In this paper, we leverage preference learning to enhance the performance of vision-language models in fine-grained video captioning, while mitigating several limitations inherent to direct preference optimization (DPO). First, we propose a pipeline for constructing preference pairs that leverages the intrinsic properties of VLMs along with partial assistance from large language models, achieving an optimal balance between cost and data quality. Second, we propose Synergistic Preference Optimization (SynPO), a novel optimization method offering significant advantages over DPO and its variants. SynPO prevents negative preferences from dominating the optimization, explicitly preserves the model's language capability to avoid deviation of the optimization objective, and improves training efficiency by eliminating the need for the reference model. We extensively evaluate SynPO not only on video captioning benchmarks (e.g., VDC, VDD, VATEX) but also across well-established NLP tasks, including general language understanding and preference evaluation, using diverse pretrained models. Results demonstrate that SynPO consistently outperforms DPO variants while achieving 20\% improvement in training efficiency. Code is available at https://github.com/longmalongma/SynPO

GuardSplat: Efficient and Robust Watermarking for 3D Gaussian SplattingZixuan Chen, Guangcong Wang, Jiahao Zhu et al.
3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has recently created impressive 3D assets for various applications. However, considering security, capacity, invisibility, and training efficiency, the copyright of 3DGS assets is not well protected as existing watermarking methods are unsuited for its rendering pipeline. In this paper, we propose GuardSplat, an innovative and efficient framework for watermarking 3DGS assets. Specifically, 1) We propose a CLIP-guided pipeline for optimizing the message decoder with minimal costs. The key objective is to achieve high-accuracy extraction by leveraging CLIP's aligning capability and rich representations, demonstrating exceptional capacity and efficiency. 2) We tailor a Spherical-Harmonic-aware (SH-aware) Message Embedding module for 3DGS, seamlessly embedding messages into the SH features of each 3D Gaussian while preserving the original 3D structure. This enables watermarking 3DGS assets with minimal fidelity trade-offs and prevents malicious users from removing the watermarks from the model files, meeting the demands for invisibility and security. 3) We present an Anti-distortion Message Extraction module to improve robustness against various distortions. Experiments demonstrate that GuardSplat outperforms state-of-the-art and achieves fast optimization speed. HarmoGS: Robust 3D Gaussian Splatting in the Wild via Conflict-Aware Gradient HarmonizationYulei Kang, Tianze Zhu, Jian-Fang Hu et al.
In-the-wild 3D Gaussian Splatting remains challenging due to transient distractors and illumination-induced cross-view appearance inconsistencies. Existing methods mainly rely on image-level masking to suppress unreliable supervision, but masking alone cannot fully eliminate residual occlusions or resolve illumination-induced inconsistencies, both of which can introduce conflicting cross-view gradients. These unresolved conflicts may destabilize Gaussian optimization and lead to visible reconstruction artifacts. We propose a conflict-aware 3DGS framework that addresses this problem from both image-space supervision and gradient-level optimization. Semantic Consistency-Guided Masking learns pixel-wise consistency scores to adaptively refine prior masks and suppress unreliable supervision before gradient formation. A dual-view Conflict-Aware Gradient Harmonization strategy further reconciles view-specific gradients by mutually rotating them into an orthogonal configuration, reducing negative directional interference across views. We also introduce conflict-aware densification and pruning to stabilize Gaussian growth and remove persistently conflicting primitives. Extensive experiments on standard in-the-wild benchmarks demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art rendering quality under complex transient distractors and cross-view inconsistencies.

Style4D-Bench: A Benchmark Suite for 4D StylizationBeiqi Chen, Shuai Shao, Haitang Feng et al.
We introduce Style4D-Bench, the first benchmark suite specifically designed for 4D stylization, with the goal of standardizing evaluation and facilitating progress in this emerging area. Style4D-Bench comprises: 1) a comprehensive evaluation protocol measuring spatial fidelity, temporal coherence, and multi-view consistency through both perceptual and quantitative metrics, 2) a strong baseline that make an initial attempt for 4D stylization, and 3) a curated collection of high-resolution dynamic 4D scenes with diverse motions and complex backgrounds. To establish a strong baseline, we present Style4D, a novel framework built upon 4D Gaussian Splatting. It consists of three key components: a basic 4DGS scene representation to capture reliable geometry, a Style Gaussian Representation that leverages lightweight per-Gaussian MLPs for temporally and spatially aware appearance control, and a Holistic Geometry-Preserved Style Transfer module designed to enhance spatio-temporal consistency via contrastive coherence learning and structural content preservation. Extensive experiments on Style4D-Bench demonstrate that Style4D achieves state-of-the-art performance in 4D stylization, producing fine-grained stylistic details with stable temporal dynamics and consistent multi-view rendering. ObjFiller-3D: Consistent Multi-view 3D Inpainting via Video Diffusion ModelsHaitang Feng, Jie Liu, Jie Tang et al.
3D inpainting often relies on multi-view 2D image inpainting, where the inherent inconsistencies across different inpainted views can result in blurred textures, spatial discontinuities, and distracting visual artifacts. These inconsistencies pose significant challenges when striving for accurate and realistic 3D object completion, particularly in applications that demand high fidelity and structural coherence. To overcome these limitations, we propose ObjFiller-3D, a novel method designed for the completion and editing of high-quality and consistent 3D objects. Instead of employing a conventional 2D image inpainting model, our approach leverages a curated selection of state-of-the-art video editing model to fill in the masked regions of 3D objects. We analyze the representation gap between 3D and videos, and propose an adaptation of a video inpainting model for 3D scene inpainting. In addition, we introduce a reference-based 3D inpainting method to further enhance the quality of reconstruction. Experiments across diverse datasets show that compared to previous methods, ObjFiller-3D produces more faithful and fine-grained reconstructions (PSNR of 26.6 vs. NeRFiller (15.9) and LPIPS of 0.19 vs. Instant3dit (0.25)). Moreover, it demonstrates strong potential for practical deployment in real-world 3D editing applications. Distilled-3DGS:Distilled 3D Gaussian SplattingLintao Xiang, Xinkai Chen, Jianhuang Lai et al.
3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has exhibited remarkable efficacy in novel view synthesis (NVS). However, it suffers from a significant drawback: achieving high-fidelity rendering typically necessitates a large number of 3D Gaussians, resulting in substantial memory consumption and storage requirements. To address this challenge, we propose the first knowledge distillation framework for 3DGS, featuring various teacher models, including vanilla 3DGS, noise-augmented variants, and dropout-regularized versions. The outputs of these teachers are aggregated to guide the optimization of a lightweight student model. To distill the hidden geometric structure, we propose a structural similarity loss to boost the consistency of spatial geometric distributions between the student and teacher model. Through comprehensive quantitative and qualitative evaluations across diverse datasets, the proposed Distilled-3DGS, a simple yet effective framework without bells and whistles, achieves promising rendering results in both rendering quality and storage efficiency compared to state-of-the-art methods. Releasing Inequality Phenomenon in $\ell_{\infty}$-norm Adversarial Training via Input Gradient DistillationJunxi Chen, Junhao Dong, Xiaohua Xie et al.
Adversarial training (AT) is considered the most effective defense against adversarial attacks. However, a recent study revealed that \(\ell_{\infty}\)-norm adversarial training (\(\ell_{\infty}\)-AT) will also induce unevenly distributed input gradients, which is called the inequality phenomenon. This phenomenon makes the \(\ell_{\infty}\)-norm adversarially trained model more vulnerable than the standard-trained model when high-attribution or randomly selected pixels are perturbed, enabling robust and practical black-box attacks against \(\ell_{\infty}\)-adversarially trained models. In this paper, we propose a simple yet effective method called Input Gradient Distillation (IGD) to release the inequality phenomenon in $\ell_{\infty}$-AT. IGD distills the standard-trained teacher model's equal decision pattern into the $\ell_{\infty}$-adversarially trained student model by aligning input gradients of the student model and the standard-trained model with the Cosine Similarity. Experiments show that IGD can mitigate the inequality phenomenon and its threats while preserving adversarial robustness. Compared to vanilla $\ell_{\infty}$-AT, IGD reduces error rates against inductive noise, inductive occlusion, random noise, and noisy images in ImageNet-C by up to 60\%, 16\%, 50\%, and 21\%, respectively. Other than empirical experiments, we also conduct a theoretical analysis to explain why releasing the inequality phenomenon can improve such robustness and discuss why the severity of the inequality phenomenon varies according to the dataset's image resolution. Most of the existing approaches focus on specific visual tasks while ignoring the relations between them. Estimating task relation sheds light on the learning of high-order semantic concepts, e.g., transfer learning. How to reveal the underlying relations between different visual tasks remains largely unexplored. In this paper, we propose a novel \textbf{L}earnable \textbf{P}arameter \textbf{S}imilarity (\textbf{LPS}) method that learns an effective metric to measure the similarity of second-order semantics hidden in trained models. LPS is achieved by using a second-order neural network to align high-dimensional model parameters and learning second-order similarity in an end-to-end way. In addition, we create a model set called ModelSet500 as a parameter similarity learning benchmark that contains 500 trained models. While very deep neural networks have shown effectiveness for computer vision and text classification applications, how to increase the network depth of neural machine translation (NMT) models for better translation quality remains a challenging problem. Directly stacking more blocks to the NMT model results in no improvement and even reduces performance. Weakly Supervised Person Re-ID: Differentiable Graphical Learning and A New BenchmarkGuangrun Wang, Guangcong Wang, Xujie Zhang et al.
Person re-identification (Re-ID) benefits greatly from the accurate annotations of existing datasets (e.g., CUHK03 [1] and Market-1501 [2]), which are quite expensive because each image in these datasets has to be assigned with a proper label. In this work, we ease the annotation of Re-ID by replacing the accurate annotation with inaccurate annotation, i.e., we group the images into bags in terms of time and assign a bag-level label for each bag. This greatly reduces the annotation effort and leads to the creation of a large-scale Re-ID benchmark called SYSU-30$k$. The new benchmark contains $30k$ individuals, which is about $20$ times larger than CUHK03 ($1.3k$ individuals) and Market-1501 ($1.5k$ individuals), and $30$ times larger than ImageNet ($1k$ categories). It sums up to 29,606,918 images. Learning a Re-ID model with bag-level annotation is called the weakly supervised Re-ID problem. To solve this problem, we introduce a differentiable graphical model to capture the dependencies from all images in a bag and generate a reliable pseudo label for each person image. The pseudo label is further used to supervise the learning of the Re-ID model. When compared with the fully supervised Re-ID models, our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on SYSU-30$k$ and other datasets. Discovering Underlying Person Structure Pattern with Relative Local Distance for Person Re-identificationGuangcong Wang, Jianhuang Lai, Zhenyu Xie et al.
Modeling the underlying person structure for person re-identification (re-ID) is difficult due to diverse deformable poses, changeable camera views and imperfect person detectors. How to exploit underlying person structure information without extra annotations to improve the performance of person re-ID remains largely unexplored. To address this problem, we propose a novel Relative Local Distance (RLD) method that integrates a relative local distance constraint into convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in an end-to-end way. It is the first time that the relative local constraint is proposed to guide the global feature representation learning. Specially, a relative local distance matrix is computed by using feature maps and then regarded as a regularizer to guide CNNs to learn a structure-aware feature representation. With the discovered underlying person structure, the RLD method builds a bridge between the global and local feature representation and thus improves the capacity of feature representation for person re-ID. Furthermore, RLD also significantly accelerates deep network training compared with conventional methods. Decoupling Endpoint and Semantic Transition Learning for Zero-Shot Composed Image RetrievalMingyu Liu, Sihan Huang, Yijia Fan et al.
Zero-shot composed image retrieval (ZS-CIR) retrieves a target image from a reference image and a text modification without human-annotated CIR triplets. Projection-based ZS-CIR methods are attractive because they do not rely on LLMs at inference and remain lightweight, but they often underperform LLM-based approaches on complex semantic modifications. This gap reflects a semantic transition bottleneck in projection-based ZS-CIR: endpoint-level matching can let the edit text act as a target-side attribute cue rather than grounding it as a source-conditioned semantic transition. We further show that adding semantic transition supervision to the same text adapter creates an endpoint--transition conflict between endpoint alignment and semantic transition alignment. To address this conflict, DeCIR decouples endpoint and transition learning. It constructs paired forward/reverse edit tuples from image-caption pairs, trains separate low-rank text adapter branches for endpoint alignment and semantic transition alignment, and merges them with Low-Rank Directional Merge (LRDM) into one deployable adapter. Extensive experiments on CIRR, CIRCO, FashionIQ, and GeneCIS demonstrate that DeCIR consistently improves projection-based ZS-CIR without increasing inference complexity.

Siamese Learning with Joint Alignment and Regression for Weakly-Supervised Video Paragraph GroundingChaolei Tan, Jianhuang Lai, Wei-Shi Zheng et al.
Video Paragraph Grounding (VPG) is an emerging task in video-language understanding, which aims at localizing multiple sentences with semantic relations and temporal order from an untrimmed video. However, existing VPG approaches are heavily reliant on a considerable number of temporal labels that are laborious and time-consuming to acquire. In this work, we introduce and explore Weakly-Supervised Video Paragraph Grounding (WSVPG) to eliminate the need of temporal annotations. Different from previous weakly-supervised grounding frameworks based on multiple instance learning or reconstruction learning for two-stage candidate ranking, we propose a novel siamese learning framework that jointly learns the cross-modal feature alignment and temporal coordinate regression without timestamp labels to achieve concise one-stage localization for WSVPG. Specifically, we devise a Siamese Grounding TRansformer (SiamGTR) consisting of two weight-sharing branches for learning complementary supervision. An Augmentation Branch is utilized for directly regressing the temporal boundaries of a complete paragraph within a pseudo video, and an Inference Branch is designed to capture the order-guided feature correspondence for localizing multiple sentences in a normal video. We demonstrate by extensive experiments that our paradigm has superior practicability and flexibility to achieve efficient weakly-supervised or semi-supervised learning, outperforming state-of-the-art methods trained with the same or stronger supervision.

Thinking Before Matching: A Reinforcement Reasoning Paradigm Towards General Person Re-IdentificationQuan Zhang, Jingze Wu, Jialong Wang et al.
Learning identity-discriminative representations with multi-scene generality has become a critical objective in person re-identification (ReID). However, mainstream perception-driven paradigms tend to identify fitting from massive annotated data rather than identity-causal cues understanding, which presents a fragile representation against multiple disruptions. In this work, ReID-R is proposed as a novel reasoning-driven paradigm that achieves explicit identity understanding and reasoning by incorporating chain-of-thought into the ReID pipeline. Specifically, ReID-R consists of a two-stage contribution: (i) Discriminative reasoning warm-up, where a model is trained in a CoT label-free manner to acquire identity-aware feature understanding; and (ii) Efficient reinforcement learning, which proposes a non-trivial sampling to construct scene-generalizable data. On this basis, ReID-R leverages high-quality reward signals to guide the model toward focusing on ID-related cues, achieving accurate reasoning and correct responses. Extensive experiments on multiple ReID benchmarks demonstrate that ReID-R achieves competitive identity discrimination as superior methods using only 14.3K non-trivial data (20.9% of the existing data scale). Furthermore, benefit from inherent reasoning, ReID-R can provide high-quality interpretation for results.

Image-to-Video Transfer Learning based on Image-Language Foundation Models: A Comprehensive SurveyJinxuan Li, Chaolei Tan, Haoxuan Chen et al.
Image-Language Foundation Models (ILFM) have demonstrated remarkable success in image-text understanding/generation tasks, providing transferable multimodal representations that generalize across diverse downstream image-based tasks. The advancement of video-text research has spurred growing interest in extending image-based models to the video domain. This paradigm, known as image-to-video transfer learning, succeeds in alleviating the substantial data and computational requirements associated with training video-language foundation models from scratch for video-text learning. This survey provides the first comprehensive review of this emerging field, which begins by summarizing the widely used ILFM and their capabilities. We then systematically classify existing image-to-video transfer learning strategies into two categories: frozen features and modified features, depending on whether the original representations from ILFM are preserved or undergo modifications. Building upon the task-specific nature of image-to-video transfer, this survey methodically elaborates these strategies and details their applications across a spectrum of video-text learning tasks, ranging from fine-grained (e.g., spatio-temporal video grounding) to coarse-grained (e.g., video question answering). We further present a detailed experimental analysis to investigate the efficacy of different image-to-video transfer learning paradigms on a range of downstream video understanding tasks. Finally, we identify prevailing challenges and highlight promising directions for future research. By offering a comprehensive and structured overview, this survey aims to establish a structured roadmap for advancing video-text learning based on existing ILFM, and to inspire future research directions in this rapidly evolving domain.

CoopDiff: Anticipating 3D Human-object Interactions via Contact-consistent Decoupled DiffusionXiaotong Lin, Tianming Liang, Jian-Fang Hu et al.
3D human-object interaction (HOI) anticipation aims to predict the future motion of humans and their manipulated objects, conditioned on the historical context. Generally, the articulated humans and rigid objects exhibit different motion patterns, due to their distinct intrinsic physical properties. However, this distinction is ignored by most of the existing works, which intend to capture the dynamics of both humans and objects within a single prediction model. In this work, we propose a novel contact-consistent decoupled diffusion framework CoopDiff, which employs two distinct branches to decouple human and object motion modeling, with the human-object contact points as shared anchors to bridge the motion generation across branches. The human dynamics branch is aimed to predict highly structured human motion, while the object dynamics branch focuses on the object motion with rigid translations and rotations. These two branches are bridged by a series of shared contact points with consistency constraint for coherent human-object motion prediction. To further enhance human-object consistency and prediction reliability, we propose a human-driven interaction module to guide object motion modeling. Extensive experiments on the BEHAVE and Human-object Interaction datasets demonstrate that our CoopDiff outperforms state-of-the-art methods.

Training-Free Class Purification for Open-Vocabulary Semantic SegmentationQi Chen, Lingxiao Yang, Yun Chen et al.
Fine-tuning pre-trained vision-language models has emerged as a powerful approach for enhancing open-vocabulary semantic segmentation (OVSS). However, the substantial computational and resource demands associated with training on large datasets have prompted interest in training-free methods for OVSS. Existing training-free approaches primarily focus on modifying model architectures and generating prototypes to improve segmentation performance. However, they often neglect the challenges posed by class redundancy, where multiple categories are not present in the current test image, and visual-language ambiguity, where semantic similarities among categories create confusion in class activation. These issues can lead to suboptimal class activation maps and affinity-refined activation maps. Motivated by these observations, we propose FreeCP, a novel training-free class purification framework designed to address these challenges. FreeCP focuses on purifying semantic categories and rectifying errors caused by redundancy and ambiguity. The purified class representations are then leveraged to produce final segmentation predictions. We conduct extensive experiments across eight benchmarks to validate FreeCP's effectiveness. Results demonstrate that FreeCP, as a plug-and-play module, significantly boosts segmentation performance when combined with other OVSS methods.

Benchmarking Deep Models for Salient Object DetectionHuajun Zhou, Yang Lin, Lingxiao Yang et al.
In recent years, deep network-based methods have continuously refreshed state-of-the-art performance on Salient Object Detection (SOD) task. However, the performance discrepancy caused by different implementation details may conceal the real progress in this task. Making an impartial comparison is required for future researches. To meet this need, we construct a general SALient Object Detection (SALOD) benchmark to conduct a comprehensive comparison among several representative SOD methods. Specifically, we re-implement 14 representative SOD methods by using consistent settings for training. Moreover, two additional protocols are set up in our benchmark to investigate the robustness of existing methods in some limited conditions. In the first protocol, we enlarge the difference between objectness distributions of train and test sets to evaluate the robustness of these SOD methods. In the second protocol, we build multiple train subsets with different scales to validate whether these methods can extract discriminative features from only a few samples. In the above experiments, we find that existing loss functions usually specialized in some metrics but reported inferior results on the others. Therefore, we propose a novel Edge-Aware (EA) loss that promotes deep networks to learn more discriminative features by integrating both pixel- and image-level supervision signals. Experiments prove that our EA loss reports more robust performances compared to existing losses.

Activation to Saliency: Forming High-Quality Labels for Completely Unsupervised Salient Object DetectionHuajun Zhou, Peijia Chen, Lingxiao Yang et al.
Existing deep learning-based Unsupervised Salient Object Detection (USOD) methods rely on supervised pre-trained deep models. Moreover, they generate pseudo labels based on hand-crafted features, which lack high-level semantic information. In order to overcome these shortcomings, we propose a new two-stage Activation-to-Saliency (A2S) framework that effectively excavates high-quality saliency cues to train a robust saliency detector. It is worth noting that our method does not require any manual annotation, even in the pre-training phase. In the first stage, we transform an unsupervisedly pre-trained network to aggregate multi-level features to a single activation map, where an Adaptive Decision Boundary (ADB) is proposed to assist the training of the transformed network. Moreover, a new loss function is proposed to facilitate the generation of high-quality pseudo labels. In the second stage, a self-rectification learning paradigm strategy is developed to train a saliency detector and refine the pseudo labels online. In addition, we construct a lightweight saliency detector using two Residual Attention Modules (RAMs) to largely reduce the risk of overfitting. Extensive experiments on several SOD benchmarks prove that our framework reports significant performance compared with existing USOD methods. Moreover, training our framework on 3,000 images consumes about 1 hour, which is over 30$\times$ faster than previous state-of-the-art methods.

Confidence-guided Adaptive Gate and Dual Differential Enhancement for Video Salient Object DetectionPeijia Chen, Jianhuang Lai, Guangcong Wang et al.
Video salient object detection (VSOD) aims to locate and segment the most attractive object by exploiting both spatial cues and temporal cues hidden in video sequences. However, spatial and temporal cues are often unreliable in real-world scenarios, such as low-contrast foreground, fast motion, and multiple moving objects. To address these problems, we propose a new framework to adaptively capture available information from spatial and temporal cues, which contains Confidence-guided Adaptive Gate (CAG) modules and Dual Differential Enhancement (DDE) modules. For both RGB features and optical flow features, CAG estimates confidence scores supervised by the IoU between predictions and the ground truths to re-calibrate the information with a gate mechanism. DDE captures the differential feature representation to enrich the spatial and temporal information and generate the fused features. Experimental results on four widely used datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method against thirteen state-of-the-art methods.

ASPCNet: A Deep Adaptive Spatial Pattern Capsule Network for Hyperspectral Image ClassificationJinping Wang, Xiaojun Tan, Jianhuang Lai et al.
Previous studies have shown the great potential of capsule networks for the spatial contextual feature extraction from {hyperspectral images (HSIs)}. However, the sampling locations of the convolutional kernels of capsules are fixed and cannot be adaptively changed according to the inconsistent semantic information of HSIs. Based on this observation, this paper proposes an adaptive spatial pattern capsule network (ASPCNet) architecture by developing an adaptive spatial pattern (ASP) unit, that can rotate the sampling location of convolutional kernels on the basis of an enlarged receptive field. Note that this unit can learn more discriminative representations of HSIs with fewer parameters. Specifically, two cascaded ASP-based convolution operations (ASPConvs) are applied to input images to learn relatively high-level semantic features, transmitting hierarchical structures among capsules more accurately than the use of the most fundamental features. Furthermore, the semantic features are fed into ASP-based conv-capsule operations (ASPCaps) to explore the shapes of objects among the capsules in an adaptive manner, further exploring the potential of capsule networks. Finally, the class labels of image patches centered on test samples can be determined according to the fully connected capsule layer. Experiments on three public datasets demonstrate that ASPCNet can yield competitive performance with higher accuracies than state-of-the-art methods.

Contour Loss: Boundary-Aware Learning for Salient Object SegmentationZixuan Chen, Huajun Zhou, Xiaohua Xie et al.
We present a learning model that makes full use of boundary information for salient object segmentation. Specifically, we come up with a novel loss function, i.e., Contour Loss, which leverages object contours to guide models to perceive salient object boundaries. Such a boundary-aware network can learn boundary-wise distinctions between salient objects and background, hence effectively facilitating the saliency detection. Yet the Contour Loss emphasizes on the local saliency. We further propose the hierarchical global attention module (HGAM), which forces the model hierarchically attend to global contexts, thus captures the global visual saliency. Comprehensive experiments on six benchmark datasets show that our method achieves superior performance over state-of-the-art ones. Moreover, our model has a real-time speed of 26 fps on a TITAN X GPU.

A Novel Teacher-Student Learning Framework For Occluded Person Re-IdentificationJiaxuan Zhuo, Jianhuang Lai, Peijia Chen
Person re-identification (re-id) has made great progress in recent years, but occlusion is still a challenging problem which significantly degenerates the identification performance. In this paper, we design a teacher-student learning framework to learn an occlusion-robust model from the full-body person domain to the occluded person domain. Notably, the teacher network only uses large-scale full-body person data to simulate the learning process of occluded person re-id. Based on the teacher network, the student network then trains a better model by using inadequate real-world occluded person data. In order to transfer more knowledge from the teacher network to the student network, we equip the proposed framework with a co-saliency network and a cross-domain simulator. The co-saliency network extracts the backbone features, and two separated collaborative branches are followed by the backbone. One branch is a classification branch for identity recognition and the other is a co-saliency branch for guiding the network to highlight meaningful parts without any manual annotation. The cross-domain simulator generates artificial occlusions on full-body person data under a growing probability so that the teacher network could train a cross-domain model by observing more and more occluded cases. Experiments on four occluded person re-id benchmarks show that our method outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.

Most of current person re-identification (ReID) methods neglect a spatial-temporal constraint. Given a query image, conventional methods compute the feature distances between the query image and all the gallery images and return a similarity ranked table. When the gallery database is very large in practice, these approaches fail to obtain a good performance due to appearance ambiguity across different camera views. In this paper, we propose a novel two-stream spatial-temporal person ReID (st-ReID) framework that mines both visual semantic information and spatial-temporal information. To this end, a joint similarity metric with Logistic Smoothing (LS) is introduced to integrate two kinds of heterogeneous information into a unified framework. To approximate a complex spatial-temporal probability distribution, we develop a fast Histogram-Parzen (HP) method. With the help of the spatial-temporal constraint, the st-ReID model eliminates lots of irrelevant images and thus narrows the gallery database. Without bells and whistles, our st-ReID method achieves rank-1 accuracy of 98.1\% on Market-1501 and 94.4\% on DukeMTMC-reID, improving from the baselines 91.2\% and 83.8\%, respectively, outperforming all previous state-of-the-art methods by a large margin.

M2M-GAN: Many-to-Many Generative Adversarial Transfer Learning for Person Re-IdentificationWenqi Liang, Guangcong Wang, Jianhuang Lai et al.
Cross-domain transfer learning (CDTL) is an extremely challenging task for the person re-identification (ReID). Given a source domain with annotations and a target domain without annotations, CDTL seeks an effective method to transfer the knowledge from the source domain to the target domain. However, such a simple two-domain transfer learning method is unavailable for the person ReID in that the source/target domain consists of several sub-domains, e.g., camera-based sub-domains. To address this intractable problem, we propose a novel Many-to-Many Generative Adversarial Transfer Learning method (M2M-GAN) that takes multiple source sub-domains and multiple target sub-domains into consideration and performs each sub-domain transferring mapping from the source domain to the target domain in a unified optimization process. The proposed method first translates the image styles of source sub-domains into that of target sub-domains, and then performs the supervised learning by using the transferred images and the corresponding annotations in source domain. As the gap is reduced, M2M-GAN achieves a promising result for the cross-domain person ReID. Experimental results on three benchmark datasets Market-1501, DukeMTMC-reID and MSMT17 show the effectiveness of our M2M-GAN.

Ensemble clustering has been a popular research topic in data mining and machine learning. Despite its significant progress in recent years, there are still two challenging issues in the current ensemble clustering research. First, most of the existing algorithms tend to investigate the ensemble information at the object-level, yet often lack the ability to explore the rich information at higher levels of granularity. Second, they mostly focus on the direct connections (e.g., direct intersection or pair-wise co-occurrence) in the multiple base clusterings, but generally neglect the multi-scale indirect relationship hidden in them. To address these two issues, this paper presents a novel ensemble clustering approach based on fast propagation of cluster-wise similarities via random walks. We first construct a cluster similarity graph with the base clusters treated as graph nodes and the cluster-wise Jaccard coefficient exploited to compute the initial edge weights. Upon the constructed graph, a transition probability matrix is defined, based on which the random walk process is conducted to propagate the graph structural information. Specifically, by investigating the propagating trajectories starting from different nodes, a new cluster-wise similarity matrix can be derived by considering the trajectory relationship. Then, the newly obtained cluster-wise similarity matrix is mapped from the cluster-level to the object-level to achieve an enhanced co-association (ECA) matrix, which is able to simultaneously capture the object-wise co-occurrence relationship as well as the multi-scale cluster-wise relationship in ensembles. Finally, two novel consensus functions are proposed to obtain the consensus clustering result. Extensive experiments on a variety of real-world datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach.

Learning to Teach with Dynamic Loss FunctionsLijun Wu, Fei Tian, Yingce Xia et al.
Teaching is critical to human society: it is with teaching that prospective students are educated and human civilization can be inherited and advanced. A good teacher not only provides his/her students with qualified teaching materials (e.g., textbooks), but also sets up appropriate learning objectives (e.g., course projects and exams) considering different situations of a student. When it comes to artificial intelligence, treating machine learning models as students, the loss functions that are optimized act as perfect counterparts of the learning objective set by the teacher. In this work, we explore the possibility of imitating human teaching behaviors by dynamically and automatically outputting appropriate loss functions to train machine learning models. Different from typical learning settings in which the loss function of a machine learning model is predefined and fixed, in our framework, the loss function of a machine learning model (we call it student) is defined by another machine learning model (we call it teacher). The ultimate goal of teacher model is cultivating the student to have better performance measured on development dataset. Towards that end, similar to human teaching, the teacher, a parametric model, dynamically outputs different loss functions that will be used and optimized by its student model at different training stages. We develop an efficient learning method for the teacher model that makes gradient based optimization possible, exempt of the ineffective solutions such as policy optimization. We name our method as "learning to teach with dynamic loss functions" (L2T-DLF for short). Extensive experiments on real world tasks including image classification and neural machine translation demonstrate that our method significantly improves the quality of various student models.

Beyond Error Propagation in Neural Machine Translation: Characteristics of Language Also MatterLijun Wu, Xu Tan, Di He et al.
Neural machine translation usually adopts autoregressive models and suffers from exposure bias as well as the consequent error propagation problem. Many previous works have discussed the relationship between error propagation and the \emph{accuracy drop} (i.e., the left part of the translated sentence is often better than its right part in left-to-right decoding models) problem. In this paper, we conduct a series of analyses to deeply understand this problem and get several interesting findings. (1) The role of error propagation on accuracy drop is overstated in the literature, although it indeed contributes to the accuracy drop problem. (2) Characteristics of a language play a more important role in causing the accuracy drop: the left part of the translation result in a right-branching language (e.g., English) is more likely to be more accurate than its right part, while the right part is more accurate for a left-branching language (e.g., Japanese). Our discoveries are confirmed on different model structures including Transformer and RNN, and in other sequence generation tasks such as text summarization.

A Study of Reinforcement Learning for Neural Machine TranslationLijun Wu, Fei Tian, Tao Qin et al.
Recent studies have shown that reinforcement learning (RL) is an effective approach for improving the performance of neural machine translation (NMT) system. However, due to its instability, successfully RL training is challenging, especially in real-world systems where deep models and large datasets are leveraged. In this paper, taking several large-scale translation tasks as testbeds, we conduct a systematic study on how to train better NMT models using reinforcement learning. We provide a comprehensive comparison of several important factors (e.g., baseline reward, reward shaping) in RL training. Furthermore, to fill in the gap that it remains unclear whether RL is still beneficial when monolingual data is used, we propose a new method to leverage RL to further boost the performance of NMT systems trained with source/target monolingual data. By integrating all our findings, we obtain competitive results on WMT14 English- German, WMT17 English-Chinese, and WMT17 Chinese-English translation tasks, especially setting a state-of-the-art performance on WMT17 Chinese-English translation task.

IGCV$2$: Interleaved Structured Sparse Convolutional Neural NetworksGuotian Xie, Jingdong Wang, Ting Zhang et al.
In this paper, we study the problem of designing efficient convolutional neural network architectures with the interest in eliminating the redundancy in convolution kernels. In addition to structured sparse kernels, low-rank kernels and the product of low-rank kernels, the product of structured sparse kernels, which is a framework for interpreting the recently-developed interleaved group convolutions (IGC) and its variants (e.g., Xception), has been attracting increasing interests. Motivated by the observation that the convolutions contained in a group convolution in IGC can be further decomposed in the same manner, we present a modularized building block, {IGCV$2$:} interleaved structured sparse convolutions. It generalizes interleaved group convolutions, which is composed of two structured sparse kernels, to the product of more structured sparse kernels, further eliminating the redundancy. We present the complementary condition and the balance condition to guide the design of structured sparse kernels, obtaining a balance among three aspects: model size, computation complexity and classification accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate the advantage on the balance among these three aspects compared to interleaved group convolutions and Xception, and competitive performance compared to other state-of-the-art architecture design methods.

Person re-identification (re-id) suffers from a serious occlusion problem when applied to crowded public places. In this paper, we propose to retrieve a full-body person image by using a person image with occlusions. This differs significantly from the conventional person re-id problem where it is assumed that person images are detected without any occlusion. We thus call this new problem the occluded person re-identitification. To address this new problem, we propose a novel Attention Framework of Person Body (AFPB) based on deep learning, consisting of 1) an Occlusion Simulator (OS) which automatically generates artificial occlusions for full-body person images, and 2) multi-task losses that force the neural network not only to discriminate a person's identity but also to determine whether a sample is from the occluded data distribution or the full-body data distribution. Experiments on a new occluded person re-id dataset and three existing benchmarks modified to include full-body person images and occluded person images show the superiority of the proposed method.

Learning View-Specific Deep Networks for Person Re-IdentificationZhanxiang Feng, Jianhuang Lai, Xiaohua Xie
In recent years, a growing body of research has focused on the problem of person re-identification (re-id). The re-id techniques attempt to match the images of pedestrians from disjoint non-overlapping camera views. A major challenge of re-id is the serious intra-class variations caused by changing viewpoints. To overcome this challenge, we propose a deep neural network-based framework which utilizes the view information in the feature extraction stage. The proposed framework learns a view-specific network for each camera view with a cross-view Euclidean constraint (CV-EC) and a cross-view center loss (CV-CL). We utilize CV-EC to decrease the margin of the features between diverse views and extend the center loss metric to a view-specific version to better adapt the re-id problem. Moreover, we propose an iterative algorithm to optimize the parameters of the view-specific networks from coarse to fine. The experiments demonstrate that our approach significantly improves the performance of the existing deep networks and outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on the VIPeR, CUHK01, CUHK03, SYSU-mReId, and Market-1501 benchmarks.

Adversarial Attribute-Image Person Re-identificationZhou Yin, Wei-Shi Zheng, Ancong Wu et al.
While attributes have been widely used for person re-identification (Re-ID) which aims at matching the same person images across disjoint camera views, they are used either as extra features or for performing multi-task learning to assist the image-image matching task. However, how to find a set of person images according to a given attribute description, which is very practical in many surveillance applications, remains a rarely investigated cross-modality matching problem in person Re-ID. In this work, we present this challenge and formulate this task as a joint space learning problem. By imposing an attribute-guided attention mechanism for images and a semantic consistent adversary strategy for attributes, each modality, i.e., images and attributes, successfully learns semantically correlated concepts under the guidance of the other. We conducted extensive experiments on three attribute datasets and demonstrated that the proposed joint space learning method is so far the most effective method for the attribute-image cross-modality person Re-ID problem.

Motion-Appearance Interactive Encoding for Object Segmentation in Unconstrained VideosChunchao Guo, Jianhuang Lai, Xiaohua Xie
We present a novel method of integrating motion and appearance cues for foreground object segmentation in unconstrained videos. Unlike conventional methods encoding motion and appearance patterns individually, our method puts particular emphasis on their mutual assistance. Specifically, we propose using an interactively constrained encoding (ICE) scheme to incorporate motion and appearance patterns into a graph that leads to a spatiotemporal energy optimization. The reason of utilizing ICE is that both motion and appearance cues for the same target share underlying correlative structure, thus can be exploited in a deeply collaborative manner. We perform ICE not only in the initialization but also in the refinement stage of a two-layer framework for object segmentation. This scheme allows our method to consistently capture structural patterns about object perceptions throughout the whole framework. Our method can be operated on superpixels instead of raw pixels to reduce the number of graph nodes by two orders of magnitude. Moreover, we propose to partially explore the multi-object localization problem with inter-occlusion by weighted bipartite graph matching. Comprehensive experiments on three benchmark datasets (i.e., SegTrack, MOViCS, and GaTech) demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach compared with extensive state-of-the-art methods.

Adversarial Neural Machine TranslationLijun Wu, Yingce Xia, Li Zhao et al.
In this paper, we study a new learning paradigm for Neural Machine Translation (NMT). Instead of maximizing the likelihood of the human translation as in previous works, we minimize the distinction between human translation and the translation given by an NMT model. To achieve this goal, inspired by the recent success of generative adversarial networks (GANs), we employ an adversarial training architecture and name it as Adversarial-NMT. In Adversarial-NMT, the training of the NMT model is assisted by an adversary, which is an elaborately designed Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The goal of the adversary is to differentiate the translation result generated by the NMT model from that by human. The goal of the NMT model is to produce high quality translations so as to cheat the adversary. A policy gradient method is leveraged to co-train the NMT model and the adversary. Experimental results on English$\rightarrow$French and German$\rightarrow$English translation tasks show that Adversarial-NMT can achieve significantly better translation quality than several strong baselines.
