3DG-STFM: 3D Geometric Guided Student-Teacher Feature MatchingRunyu Mao, Chen Bai, Yatong An et al.
We tackle the essential task of finding dense visual correspondences between a pair of images. This is a challenging problem due to various factors such as poor texture, repetitive patterns, illumination variation, and motion blur in practical scenarios. In contrast to methods that use dense correspondence ground-truths as direct supervision for local feature matching training, we train 3DG-STFM: a multi-modal matching model (Teacher) to enforce the depth consistency under 3D dense correspondence supervision and transfer the knowledge to 2D unimodal matching model (Student). Both teacher and student models consist of two transformer-based matching modules that obtain dense correspondences in a coarse-to-fine manner. The teacher model guides the student model to learn RGB-induced depth information for the matching purpose on both coarse and fine branches. We also evaluate 3DG-STFM on a model compression task. To the best of our knowledge, 3DG-STFM is the first student-teacher learning method for the local feature matching task. The experiments show that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods on indoor and outdoor camera pose estimations, and homography estimation problems. Speech Emotion Recognition via an Attentive Time-Frequency Neural NetworkCheng Lu, Wenming Zheng, Hailun Lian et al.
Spectrogram is commonly used as the input feature of deep neural networks to learn the high(er)-level time-frequency pattern of speech signal for speech emotion recognition (SER). \textcolor{black}{Generally, different emotions correspond to specific energy activations both within frequency bands and time frames on spectrogram, which indicates the frequency and time domains are both essential to represent the emotion for SER. However, recent spectrogram-based works mainly focus on modeling the long-term dependency in time domain, leading to these methods encountering the following two issues: (1) neglecting to model the emotion-related correlations within frequency domain during the time-frequency joint learning; (2) ignoring to capture the specific frequency bands associated with emotions.} To cope with the issues, we propose an attentive time-frequency neural network (ATFNN) for SER, including a time-frequency neural network (TFNN) and time-frequency attention. Specifically, aiming at the first issue, we design a TFNN with a frequency-domain encoder (F-Encoder) based on the Transformer encoder and a time-domain encoder (T-Encoder) based on the Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM). The F-Encoder and T-Encoder model the correlations within frequency bands and time frames, respectively, and they are embedded into a time-frequency joint learning strategy to obtain the time-frequency patterns for speech emotions. Moreover, to handle the second issue, we also adopt time-frequency attention with a frequency-attention network (F-Attention) and a time-attention network (T-Attention) to focus on the emotion-related frequency band ranges and time frame ranges, which can enhance the discriminability of speech emotion features.

Situational Perception Guided Image MattingBo Xu, Jiake Xie, Han Huang et al.
Most automatic matting methods try to separate the salient foreground from the background. However, the insufficient quantity and subjective bias of the current existing matting datasets make it difficult to fully explore the semantic association between object-to-object and object-to-environment in a given image. In this paper, we propose a Situational Perception Guided Image Matting (SPG-IM) method that mitigates subjective bias of matting annotations and captures sufficient situational perception information for better global saliency distilled from the visual-to-textual task. SPG-IM can better associate inter-objects and object-to-environment saliency, and compensate the subjective nature of image matting and its expensive annotation. We also introduce a textual Semantic Transformation (TST) module that can effectively transform and integrate the semantic feature stream to guide the visual representations. In addition, an Adaptive Focal Transformation (AFT) Refinement Network is proposed to adaptively switch multi-scale receptive fields and focal points to enhance both global and local details. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of situational perception guidance from the visual-to-textual tasks on image matting, and our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods. We also analyze the significance of different components in our model. The code will be released soon.

Semantic Distillation Guided Salient Object DetectionBo Xu, Guanze Liu, Han Huang et al.
Most existing CNN-based salient object detection methods can identify local segmentation details like hair and animal fur, but often misinterpret the real saliency due to the lack of global contextual information caused by the subjectiveness of the SOD task and the locality of convolution layers. Moreover, due to the unrealistically expensive labeling costs, the current existing SOD datasets are insufficient to cover the real data distribution. The limitation and bias of the training data add additional difficulty to fully exploring the semantic association between object-to-object and object-to-environment in a given image. In this paper, we propose a semantic distillation guided SOD (SDG-SOD) method that produces accurate results by fusing semantically distilled knowledge from generated image captioning into the Vision-Transformer-based SOD framework. SDG-SOD can better uncover inter-objects and object-to-environment saliency and cover the gap between the subjective nature of SOD and its expensive labeling. Comprehensive experiments on five benchmark datasets demonstrate that the SDG-SOD outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches on four evaluation metrics, and largely improves the model performance on DUTS, ECSSD, DUT, HKU-IS, and PASCAL-S datasets.

An Exploration of Captioning Practices and Challenges of Individual Content Creators on YouTube for People with Hearing ImpairmentsFranklin Mingzhe Li, Cheng Lu, Zhicong Lu et al.
Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing (DHH) audiences have long complained about caption qualities for many online videos created by individual content creators on video-sharing platforms (e.g., YouTube). However, there lack explorations of practices, challenges, and perceptions of online video captions from the perspectives of both individual content creators and DHH audiences. In this work, we first explore DHH audiences' feedback on and reactions to YouTube video captions through interviews with 13 DHH individuals, and uncover DHH audiences' experiences, challenges, and perceptions on watching videos created by individual content creators (e.g., manually added caption tags could create additional confidence and trust in caption qualities for DHH audiences). We then discover individual content creators' practices, challenges, and perceptions on captioning their videos (e.g., back-captioning problems) by conducting a YouTube video analysis with 189 captioning-related YouTube videos, followed by a survey with 62 individual content creators. Overall, our findings provide an in-depth understanding of captions generated by individual content creators and bridge the knowledge gap mutually between content creators and DHH audiences on captions.

Deep Two-Stream Video Inference for Human Body Pose and Shape EstimationZiwen Li, Bo Xu, Han Huang et al.
Several video-based 3D pose and shape estimation algorithms have been proposed to resolve the temporal inconsistency of single-image-based methods. However it still remains challenging to have stable and accurate reconstruction. In this paper, we propose a new framework Deep Two-Stream Video Inference for Human Body Pose and Shape Estimation (DTS-VIBE), to generate 3D human pose and mesh from RGB videos. We reformulate the task as a multi-modality problem that fuses RGB and optical flow for more reliable estimation. In order to fully utilize both sensory modalities (RGB or optical flow), we train a two-stream temporal network based on transformer to predict SMPL parameters. The supplementary modality, optical flow, helps to maintain temporal consistency by leveraging motion knowledge between two consecutive frames. The proposed algorithm is extensively evaluated on the Human3.6 and 3DPW datasets. The experimental results show that it outperforms other state-of-the-art methods by a significant margin.
