An Efficient and Generalizable Symbolic Regression Method for Time Series AnalysisYi Xie, Tianyu Qiu, Yun Xiong et al.
Time series analysis and prediction methods currently excel in quantitative analysis, offering accurate future predictions and diverse statistical indicators, but generally falling short in elucidating the underlying evolution patterns of time series. To gain a more comprehensive understanding and provide insightful explanations, we utilize symbolic regression techniques to derive explicit expressions for the non-linear dynamics in the evolution of time series variables. However, these techniques face challenges in computational efficiency and generalizability across diverse real-world time series data. To overcome these challenges, we propose \textbf{N}eural-\textbf{E}nhanced \textbf{Mo}nte-Carlo \textbf{T}ree \textbf{S}earch (NEMoTS) for time series. NEMoTS leverages the exploration-exploitation balance of Monte-Carlo Tree Search (MCTS), significantly reducing the search space in symbolic regression and improving expression quality. Furthermore, by integrating neural networks with MCTS, NEMoTS not only capitalizes on their superior fitting capabilities to concentrate on more pertinent operations post-search space reduction, but also replaces the complex and time-consuming simulation process, thereby substantially improving computational efficiency and generalizability in time series analysis. NEMoTS offers an efficient and comprehensive approach to time series analysis. Experiments with three real-world datasets demonstrate NEMoTS's significant superiority in performance, efficiency, reliability, and interpretability, making it well-suited for large-scale real-world time series data.
Sharpening Neural Implicit Functions with Frequency Consolidation PriorsChao Chen, Yu-Shen Liu, Zhizhong Han
Signed Distance Functions (SDFs) are vital implicit representations to represent high fidelity 3D surfaces. Current methods mainly leverage a neural network to learn an SDF from various supervisions including signed distances, 3D point clouds, or multi-view images. However, due to various reasons including the bias of neural network on low frequency content, 3D unaware sampling, sparsity in point clouds, or low resolutions of images, neural implicit representations still struggle to represent geometries with high frequency components like sharp structures, especially for the ones learned from images or point clouds. To overcome this challenge, we introduce a method to sharpen a low frequency SDF observation by recovering its high frequency components, pursuing a sharper and more complete surface. Our key idea is to learn a mapping from a low frequency observation to a full frequency coverage in a data-driven manner, leading to a prior knowledge of shape consolidation in the frequency domain, dubbed frequency consolidation priors. To better generalize a learned prior to unseen shapes, we introduce to represent frequency components as embeddings and disentangle the embedding of the low frequency component from the embedding of the full frequency component. This disentanglement allows the prior to generalize on an unseen low frequency observation by simply recovering its full frequency embedding through a test-time self-reconstruction. Our evaluations under widely used benchmarks or real scenes show that our method can recover high frequency component and produce more accurate surfaces than the latest methods. Hand-Gesture-Recognition Based Text Input Method for AR/VR Wearable DevicesNizamuddin Maitlo, Yanbo Wang, Chao Ping Chen et al.
Static and dynamic hand movements are basic way for human-machine interactions. To recognize and classify these movements, first these movements are captured by the cameras mounted on the augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) wearable devices. The hand is segmented using segmentation method and its gestures are passed to hand gesture recognition algorithm, which depends on depth-wise separable convolutional neural network for training, testing and finally running smoothly on mobile AR/VR devices, while maintaining the accuracy and balancing the load. A number of gestures are processed for identification of right gesture and to classify the gesture and ignore the all intermittent gestures. With proposed method, a user can write letters and numbers in air by just moving his/her hand in air. Gesture based operations are performed, and trajectory of hand is recorded as handwritten text. Finally, that handwritten text is processed for the text recognition.
