End-to-End Whisper to Natural Speech Conversion using Modified Transformer Network

Abhishek Niranjan, Mukesh Sharma, Sai Bharath Chandra Gutha et al.

Machine recognition of an atypical speech like whispered speech, is a challenging task. We introduce whisper-to-natural-speech conversion using sequence-to-sequence approach by proposing enhanced transformer architecture, which uses both parallel and non-parallel data. We investigate different features like Mel frequency cepstral coefficients and smoothed spectral features. The proposed networks are trained end-to-end using supervised approach for feature-to-feature transformation. Further, we also investigate the effectiveness of embedded auxillary decoder used after N encoder sub-layers, trained with the frame-level objective function for identifying source phoneme labels. We show results on opensource wTIMIT and CHAINS datasets by measuring word error rate using end-to-end ASR and also BLEU scores for the generated speech. Alternatively, we also propose a novel method to measure spectral shape of it by measuring formant distributions w.r.t. reference speech, as formant divergence metric. We have found whisper-to-natural converted speech formants probability distribution is similar to the groundtruth distribution. To the authors' best knowledge, this is the first time enhanced transformer has been proposed, both with and without auxiliary decoder for whisper-to-natural-speech conversion and vice versa.

SRIB-LEAP submission to Far-field Multi-Channel Speech Enhancement Challenge for Video Conferencing

R G Prithvi Raj, Rohit Kumar, M K Jayesh et al.

This paper presents the details of the SRIB-LEAP submission to the ConferencingSpeech challenge 2021. The challenge involved the task of multi-channel speech enhancement to improve the quality of far field speech from microphone arrays in a video conferencing room. We propose a two stage method involving a beamformer followed by single channel enhancement. For the beamformer, we incorporated self-attention mechanism as inter-channel processing layer in the filter-and-sum network (FaSNet), an end-to-end time-domain beamforming system. The single channel speech enhancement is done in log spectral domain using convolution neural network (CNN)-long short term memory (LSTM) based architecture. We achieved improvements in objective quality metrics - perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) of 0.5 on the noisy data. On subjective quality evaluation, the proposed approach improved the mean opinion score (MOS) by an absolute measure of 0.9 over the noisy audio.

Hierarchical Attention Transformer Architecture For Syntactic Spell Correction

Abhishek Niranjan, M Ali Basha Shaik, Kushal Verma

The attention mechanisms are playing a boosting role in advancements in sequence-to-sequence problems. Transformer architecture achieved new state of the art results in machine translation, and it's variants are since being introduced in several other sequence-to-sequence problems. Problems which involve a shared vocabulary, can benefit from the similar semantic and syntactic structure in the source and target sentences. With the motivation of building a reliable and fast post-processing textual module to assist all the text-related use cases in mobile phones, we take on the popular spell correction problem. In this paper, we propose multi encoder-single decoder variation of conventional transformer. Outputs from the three encoders with character level 1-gram, 2-grams and 3-grams inputs are attended in hierarchical fashion in the decoder. The context vectors from the encoders clubbed with self-attention amplify the n-gram properties at the character level and helps in accurate decoding. We demonstrate our model on spell correction dataset from Samsung Research, and report significant improvement of 0.11\%, 0.32\% and 0.69\% in character (CER), word (WER) and sentence (SER) error rates from existing state-of-the-art machine-translation architectures. Our architecture is also trains ~7.8 times faster, and is only about 1/3 in size from the next most accurate model.
