Towards performant and reliable undersampled MR reconstruction via diffusion model samplingCheng Peng, Pengfei Guo, S. Kevin Zhou et al.
Magnetic Resonance (MR) image reconstruction from under-sampled acquisition promises faster scanning time. To this end, current State-of-The-Art (SoTA) approaches leverage deep neural networks and supervised training to learn a recovery model. While these approaches achieve impressive performances, the learned model can be fragile on unseen degradation, e.g. when given a different acceleration factor. These methods are also generally deterministic and provide a single solution to an ill-posed problem; as such, it can be difficult for practitioners to understand the reliability of the reconstruction. We introduce DiffuseRecon, a novel diffusion model-based MR reconstruction method. DiffuseRecon guides the generation process based on the observed signals and a pre-trained diffusion model, and does not require additional training on specific acceleration factors. DiffuseRecon is stochastic in nature and generates results from a distribution of fully-sampled MR images; as such, it allows us to explicitly visualize different potential reconstruction solutions. Lastly, DiffuseRecon proposes an accelerated, coarse-to-fine Monte-Carlo sampling scheme to approximate the most likely reconstruction candidate. The proposed DiffuseRecon achieves SoTA performances reconstructing from raw acquisition signals in fastMRI and SKM-TEA. Code will be open-sourced at www.github.com/cpeng93/DiffuseRecon.

Egocentric, multi-modal data as available on future augmented reality (AR) devices provides unique challenges and opportunities for machine perception. These future devices will need to be all-day wearable in a socially acceptable form-factor to support always available, context-aware and personalized AI applications. Our team at Meta Reality Labs Research built the Aria device, an egocentric, multi-modal data recording and streaming device with the goal to foster and accelerate research in this area. In this paper, we describe the Aria device hardware including its sensor configuration and the corresponding software tools that enable recording and processing of such data.

On the Impact of Cross-Domain Data on German Language ModelsAmin Dada, Aokun Chen, Cheng Peng et al.
Traditionally, large language models have been either trained on general web crawls or domain-specific data. However, recent successes of generative large language models, have shed light on the benefits of cross-domain datasets. To examine the significance of prioritizing data diversity over quality, we present a German dataset comprising texts from five domains, along with another dataset aimed at containing high-quality data. Through training a series of models ranging between 122M and 750M parameters on both datasets, we conduct a comprehensive benchmark on multiple downstream tasks. Our findings demonstrate that the models trained on the cross-domain dataset outperform those trained on quality data alone, leading to improvements up to $4.45\%$ over the previous state-of-the-art. PDRF: Progressively Deblurring Radiance Field for Fast and Robust Scene Reconstruction from Blurry ImagesCheng Peng, Rama Chellappa
We present Progressively Deblurring Radiance Field (PDRF), a novel approach to efficiently reconstruct high quality radiance fields from blurry images. While current State-of-The-Art (SoTA) scene reconstruction methods achieve photo-realistic rendering results from clean source views, their performances suffer when the source views are affected by blur, which is commonly observed for images in the wild. Previous deblurring methods either do not account for 3D geometry, or are computationally intense. To addresses these issues, PDRF, a progressively deblurring scheme in radiance field modeling, accurately models blur by incorporating 3D scene context. PDRF further uses an efficient importance sampling scheme, which results in fast scene optimization. Specifically, PDRF proposes a Coarse Ray Renderer to quickly estimate voxel density and feature; a Fine Voxel Renderer is then used to achieve high quality ray tracing. We perform extensive experiments and show that PDRF is 15X faster than previous SoTA while achieving better performance on both synthetic and real scenes.

Multi-Modal Human Authentication Using Silhouettes, Gait and RGBYuxiang Guo, Cheng Peng, Chun Pong Lau et al.
Whole-body-based human authentication is a promising approach for remote biometrics scenarios. Current literature focuses on either body recognition based on RGB images or gait recognition based on body shapes and walking patterns; both have their advantages and drawbacks. In this work, we propose Dual-Modal Ensemble (DME), which combines both RGB and silhouette data to achieve more robust performances for indoor and outdoor whole-body based recognition. Within DME, we propose GaitPattern, which is inspired by the double helical gait pattern used in traditional gait analysis. The GaitPattern contributes to robust identification performance over a large range of viewing angles. Extensive experimental results on the CASIA-B dataset demonstrate that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art recognition systems. We also provide experimental results using the newly collected BRIAR dataset.

Capturing dynamical correlations using implicit neural representationsSathya Chitturi, Zhurun Ji, Alexander Petsch et al.
The observation and description of collective excitations in solids is a fundamental issue when seeking to understand the physics of a many-body system. Analysis of these excitations is usually carried out by measuring the dynamical structure factor, S(Q, $ω$), with inelastic neutron or x-ray scattering techniques and comparing this against a calculated dynamical model. Here, we develop an artificial intelligence framework which combines a neural network trained to mimic simulated data from a model Hamiltonian with automatic differentiation to recover unknown parameters from experimental data. We benchmark this approach on a Linear Spin Wave Theory (LSWT) simulator and advanced inelastic neutron scattering data from the square-lattice spin-1 antiferromagnet La$_2$NiO$_4$. We find that the model predicts the unknown parameters with excellent agreement relative to analytical fitting. In doing so, we illustrate the ability to build and train a differentiable model only once, which then can be applied in real-time to multi-dimensional scattering data, without the need for human-guided peak finding and fitting algorithms. This prototypical approach promises a new technology for this field to automatically detect and refine more advanced models for ordered quantum systems.

Distillation-guided Representation Learning for Unconstrained Gait RecognitionYuxiang Guo, Siyuan Huang, Ram Prabhakar et al.
Gait recognition holds the promise of robustly identifying subjects based on walking patterns instead of appearance information. While previous approaches have performed well for curated indoor data, they tend to underperform in unconstrained situations, e.g. in outdoor, long distance scenes, etc. We propose a framework, termed GAit DEtection and Recognition (GADER), for human authentication in challenging outdoor scenarios. Specifically, GADER leverages a Double Helical Signature to detect segments that contain human movement and builds discriminative features through a novel gait recognition method, where only frames containing gait information are used. To further enhance robustness, GADER encodes viewpoint information in its architecture, and distills representation from an auxiliary RGB recognition model, which enables GADER to learn from silhouette and RGB data at training time. At test time, GADER only infers from the silhouette modality. We evaluate our method on multiple State-of-The-Arts(SoTA) gait baselines and demonstrate consistent improvements on indoor and outdoor datasets, especially with a significant 25.2% improvement on unconstrained, remote gait data.

Clinical Concept and Relation Extraction Using Prompt-based Machine Reading ComprehensionCheng Peng, Xi Yang, Zehao Yu et al.
Objective: To develop a natural language processing system that solves both clinical concept extraction and relation extraction in a unified prompt-based machine reading comprehension (MRC) architecture with good generalizability for cross-institution applications. Methods: We formulate both clinical concept extraction and relation extraction using a unified prompt-based MRC architecture and explore state-of-the-art transformer models. We compare our MRC models with existing deep learning models for concept extraction and end-to-end relation extraction using two benchmark datasets developed by the 2018 National NLP Clinical Challenges (n2c2) challenge (medications and adverse drug events) and the 2022 n2c2 challenge (relations of social determinants of health [SDoH]). We also evaluate the transfer learning ability of the proposed MRC models in a cross-institution setting. We perform error analyses and examine how different prompting strategies affect the performance of MRC models. Results and Conclusion: The proposed MRC models achieve state-of-the-art performance for clinical concept and relation extraction on the two benchmark datasets, outperforming previous non-MRC transformer models. GatorTron-MRC achieves the best strict and lenient F1-scores for concept extraction, outperforming previous deep learning models on the two datasets by 1%~3% and 0.7%~1.3%, respectively. For end-to-end relation extraction, GatorTron-MRC and BERT-MIMIC-MRC achieve the best F1-scores, outperforming previous deep learning models by 0.9%~2.4% and 10%-11%, respectively. For cross-institution evaluation, GatorTron-MRC outperforms traditional GatorTron by 6.4% and 16% for the two datasets, respectively. The proposed method is better at handling nested/overlapped concepts, extracting relations, and has good portability for cross-institute applications.

Undersampled MRI Reconstruction with Side Information-Guided NormalisationXinwen Liu, Jing Wang, Cheng Peng et al.
Magnetic resonance (MR) images exhibit various contrasts and appearances based on factors such as different acquisition protocols, views, manufacturers, scanning parameters, etc. This generally accessible appearance-related side information affects deep learning-based undersampled magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) reconstruction frameworks, but has been overlooked in the majority of current works. In this paper, we investigate the use of such side information as normalisation parameters in a convolutional neural network (CNN) to improve undersampled MRI reconstruction. Specifically, a Side Information-Guided Normalisation (SIGN) module, containing only few layers, is proposed to efficiently encode the side information and output the normalisation parameters. We examine the effectiveness of such a module on two popular reconstruction architectures, D5C5 and OUCR. The experimental results on both brain and knee images under various acceleration rates demonstrate that the proposed method improves on its corresponding baseline architectures with a significant margin.

Model Tuning or Prompt Tuning? A Study of Large Language Models for Clinical Concept and Relation ExtractionCheng Peng, Xi Yang, Kaleb E Smith et al.
Objective To develop soft prompt-based learning algorithms for large language models (LLMs), examine the shape of prompts, prompt-tuning using frozen/unfrozen LLMs, transfer learning, and few-shot learning abilities. Methods We developed a soft prompt-based LLM model and compared 4 training strategies including (1) fine-tuning without prompts; (2) hard-prompt with unfrozen LLMs; (3) soft-prompt with unfrozen LLMs; and (4) soft-prompt with frozen LLMs. We evaluated 7 pretrained LLMs using the 4 training strategies for clinical concept and relation extraction on two benchmark datasets. We evaluated the transfer learning ability of the prompt-based learning algorithms in a cross-institution setting. We also assessed the few-shot learning ability. Results and Conclusion When LLMs are unfrozen, GatorTron-3.9B with soft prompting achieves the best strict F1-scores of 0.9118 and 0.8604 for concept extraction, outperforming the traditional fine-tuning and hard prompt-based models by 0.6~3.1% and 1.2~2.9%, respectively; GatorTron-345M with soft prompting achieves the best F1-scores of 0.8332 and 0.7488 for end-to-end relation extraction, outperforming the other two models by 0.2~2% and 0.6~11.7%, respectively. When LLMs are frozen, small (i.e., 345 million parameters) LLMs have a big gap to be competitive with unfrozen models; scaling LLMs up to billions of parameters makes frozen LLMs competitive with unfrozen LLMs. For cross-institute evaluation, soft prompting with a frozen GatorTron-8.9B model achieved the best performance. This study demonstrates that (1) machines can learn soft prompts better than humans, (2) frozen LLMs have better few-shot learning ability and transfer learning ability to facilitate muti-institution applications, and (3) frozen LLMs require large models.

OneGen: Efficient One-Pass Unified Generation and Retrieval for LLMsJintian Zhang, Cheng Peng, Mengshu Sun et al.
Despite the recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs), which have significantly enhanced the generative capabilities for various NLP tasks, LLMs still face limitations in directly handling retrieval tasks. However, many practical applications demand the seamless integration of both retrieval and generation. This paper introduces a novel and efficient One-pass Generation and retrieval framework (OneGen), designed to improve LLMs' performance on tasks that require both generation and retrieval. The proposed framework bridges the traditionally separate training approaches for generation and retrieval by incorporating retrieval tokens generated autoregressively. This enables a single LLM to handle both tasks simultaneously in a unified forward pass. We conduct experiments on two distinct types of composite tasks, RAG and Entity Linking, to validate the pluggability, effectiveness, and efficiency of OneGen in training and inference. Furthermore, our results show that integrating generation and retrieval within the same context preserves the generative capabilities of LLMs while improving retrieval performance. To the best of our knowledge, OneGen is the first to enable LLMs to conduct vector retrieval during the generation.

REGAS: REspiratory-GAted Synthesis of Views for Multi-Phase CBCT Reconstruction from a single 3D CBCT AcquisitionCheng Peng, Haofu Liao, S. Kevin Zhou et al. · amazon-science
It is a long-standing challenge to reconstruct Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) of the lung under respiratory motion. This work takes a step further to address a challenging setting in reconstructing a multi-phase}4D lung image from just a single}3D CBCT acquisition. To this end, we introduce REpiratory-GAted Synthesis of views, or REGAS. REGAS proposes a self-supervised method to synthesize the undersampled tomographic views and mitigate aliasing artifacts in reconstructed images. This method allows a much better estimation of between-phase Deformation Vector Fields (DVFs), which are used to enhance reconstruction quality from direct observations without synthesis. To address the large memory cost of deep neural networks on high resolution 4D data, REGAS introduces a novel Ray Path Transformation (RPT) that allows for distributed, differentiable forward projections. REGAS require no additional measurements like prior scans, air-flow volume, or breathing velocity. Our extensive experiments show that REGAS significantly outperforms comparable methods in quantitative metrics and visual quality.

DA-VSR: Domain Adaptable Volumetric Super-Resolution For Medical ImagesCheng Peng, S. Kevin Zhou, Rama Chellappa
Medical image super-resolution (SR) is an active research area that has many potential applications, including reducing scan time, bettering visual understanding, increasing robustness in downstream tasks, etc. However, applying deep-learning-based SR approaches for clinical applications often encounters issues of domain inconsistency, as the test data may be acquired by different machines or on different organs. In this work, we present a novel algorithm called domain adaptable volumetric super-resolution (DA-VSR) to better bridge the domain inconsistency gap. DA-VSR uses a unified feature extraction backbone and a series of network heads to improve image quality over different planes. Furthermore, DA-VSR leverages the in-plane and through-plane resolution differences on the test data to achieve a self-learned domain adaptation. As such, DA-VSR combines the advantages of a strong feature generator learned through supervised training and the ability to tune to the idiosyncrasies of the test volumes through unsupervised learning. Through experiments, we demonstrate that DA-VSR significantly improves super-resolution quality across numerous datasets of different domains, thereby taking a further step toward real clinical applications.

Drone-assisted Road Gaussian Splatting with Cross-view UncertaintySaining Zhang, Baijun Ye, Xiaoxue Chen et al. · tsinghua
Robust and realistic rendering for large-scale road scenes is essential in autonomous driving simulation. Recently, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3D-GS) has made groundbreaking progress in neural rendering, but the general fidelity of large-scale road scene renderings is often limited by the input imagery, which usually has a narrow field of view and focuses mainly on the street-level local area. Intuitively, the data from the drone's perspective can provide a complementary viewpoint for the data from the ground vehicle's perspective, enhancing the completeness of scene reconstruction and rendering. However, training naively with aerial and ground images, which exhibit large view disparity, poses a significant convergence challenge for 3D-GS, and does not demonstrate remarkable improvements in performance on road views. In order to enhance the novel view synthesis of road views and to effectively use the aerial information, we design an uncertainty-aware training method that allows aerial images to assist in the synthesis of areas where ground images have poor learning outcomes instead of weighting all pixels equally in 3D-GS training like prior work did. We are the first to introduce the cross-view uncertainty to 3D-GS by matching the car-view ensemble-based rendering uncertainty to aerial images, weighting the contribution of each pixel to the training process. Additionally, to systematically quantify evaluation metrics, we assemble a high-quality synthesized dataset comprising both aerial and ground images for road scenes.

Machine learning enabled experimental design and parameter estimation for ultrafast spin dynamicsZhantao Chen, Cheng Peng, Alexander N. Petsch et al.
Advanced experimental measurements are crucial for driving theoretical developments and unveiling novel phenomena in condensed matter and material physics, which often suffer from the scarcity of facility resources and increasing complexities. To address the limitations, we introduce a methodology that combines machine learning with Bayesian optimal experimental design (BOED), exemplified with x-ray photon fluctuation spectroscopy (XPFS) measurements for spin fluctuations. Our method employs a neural network model for large-scale spin dynamics simulations for precise distribution and utility calculations in BOED. The capability of automatic differentiation from the neural network model is further leveraged for more robust and accurate parameter estimation. Our numerical benchmarks demonstrate the superior performance of our method in guiding XPFS experiments, predicting model parameters, and yielding more informative measurements within limited experimental time. Although focusing on XPFS and spin fluctuations, our method can be adapted to other experiments, facilitating more efficient data collection and accelerating scientific discoveries.

UF-HOBI at "Discharge Me!": A Hybrid Solution for Discharge Summary Generation Through Prompt-based Tuning of GatorTronGPT ModelsMengxian Lyu, Cheng Peng, Daniel Paredes et al.
Automatic generation of discharge summaries presents significant challenges due to the length of clinical documentation, the dispersed nature of patient information, and the diverse terminology used in healthcare. This paper presents a hybrid solution for generating discharge summary sections as part of our participation in the "Discharge Me!" Challenge at the BioNLP 2024 Shared Task. We developed a two-stage generation method using both extractive and abstractive techniques, in which we first apply name entity recognition (NER) to extract key clinical concepts, which are then used as input for a prompt-tuning-based GatorTronGPT model to generate coherent text for two important sections including "Brief Hospital Course" and "Discharge Instructions". Our system was ranked 5th in this challenge, achieving an overall score of 0.284. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of our hybrid solution in improving the quality of automated discharge section generation.

SyncFix: Fixing 3D Reconstructions via Multi-View SynchronizationDeming Li, Abhay Yadav, Cheng Peng et al.
We present SyncFix, a framework that enforces cross-view consistency during the diffusion-based refinement of reconstructed scenes. SyncFix formulates refinement as a joint latent bridge matching problem, synchronizing distorted and clean representations across multiple views to fix the semantic and geometric inconsistencies. This means SyncFix learns a joint conditional over multiple views to enforce consistency throughout the denoising trajectory. Our training is done only on image pairs, but it generalizes naturally to an arbitrary number of views during inference. Moreover, reconstruction quality improves with additional views, with diminishing returns at higher view counts. Qualitative and quantitative results demonstrate that SyncFix consistently generates high-quality reconstructions and surpasses current state-of-the-art baselines, even in the absence of clean reference images. SyncFix achieves even higher fidelity when sparse references are available.

Countering Catastrophic Forgetting of Large Language Models for Better Instruction Following via Weight-Space Model MergingMengxian Lyu, Cheng Peng, Ziyi Chen et al.
Large language models have been adopted in the medical domain for clinical documentation to reduce clinician burden. However, studies have reported that LLMs often "forget" a significant amount of instruction-following ability when fine-tuned using a task-specific medical dataset, a critical challenge in adopting general-purpose LLMs for clinical applications. This study presents a model merging framework to efficiently adapt general-purpose LLMs to the medical domain by countering this forgetting issue. By merging a clinical foundation model (GatorTronLlama) with a general instruct model (Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct) via interpolation-based merge methods, we seek to derive a domain-adapted model with strong performance on clinical tasks while retaining instruction-following ability. Comprehensive evaluation across medical benchmarks and five clinical generation tasks (e.g., radiology and discharge summarization) shows that merged models can effectively mitigate catastrophic forgetting, preserve clinical domain expertise, and retain instruction-following ability. In addition, our model merging strategies demonstrate training efficiency, achieving performance on par with fully fine-tuned baselines under severely constrained supervision (e.g., 64-shot vs. 256-shot). Consequently, weight-space merging constitutes a highly scalable solution for adapting open-source LLMs to clinical applications, facilitating broader deployment in resource-constrained healthcare environments.

GaitContour: Efficient Gait Recognition based on a Contour-Pose RepresentationYuxiang Guo, Anshul Shah, Jiang Liu et al.
Gait recognition holds the promise to robustly identify subjects based on walking patterns instead of appearance information. In recent years, this field has been dominated by learning methods based on two principal input representations: dense silhouette masks or sparse pose keypoints. In this work, we propose a novel, point-based Contour-Pose representation, which compactly expresses both body shape and body parts information. We further propose a local-to-global architecture, called GaitContour, to leverage this novel representation and efficiently compute subject embedding in two stages. The first stage consists of a local transformer that extracts features from five different body regions. The second stage then aggregates the regional features to estimate a global human gait representation. Such a design significantly reduces the complexity of the attention operation and improves efficiency and performance simultaneously. Through large scale experiments, GaitContour is shown to perform significantly better than previous point-based methods, while also being significantly more efficient than silhouette-based methods. On challenging datasets with significant distractors, GaitContour can even outperform silhouette-based methods.

VILLS -- Video-Image Learning to Learn Semantics for Person Re-IdentificationSiyuan Huang, Ram Prabhakar, Yuxiang Guo et al.
Person Re-identification is a research area with significant real world applications. Despite recent progress, existing methods face challenges in robust re-identification in the wild, e.g., by focusing only on a particular modality and on unreliable patterns such as clothing. A generalized method is highly desired, but remains elusive to achieve due to issues such as the trade-off between spatial and temporal resolution and imperfect feature extraction. We propose VILLS (Video-Image Learning to Learn Semantics), a self-supervised method that jointly learns spatial and temporal features from images and videos. VILLS first designs a local semantic extraction module that adaptively extracts semantically consistent and robust spatial features. Then, VILLS designs a unified feature learning and adaptation module to represent image and video modalities in a consistent feature space. By Leveraging self-supervised, large-scale pre-training, VILLS establishes a new State-of-The-Art that significantly outperforms existing image and video-based methods.

A Geometric-Relational Deep Learning Framework for BIM Object ClassificationHairong Luo, Ge Gao, Han Huang et al.
Interoperability issue is a significant problem in Building Information Modeling (BIM). Object type, as a kind of critical semantic information needed in multiple BIM applications like scan-to-BIM and code compliance checking, also suffers when exchanging BIM data or creating models using software of other domains. It can be supplemented using deep learning. Current deep learning methods mainly learn from the shape information of BIM objects for classification, leaving relational information inherent in the BIM context unused. To address this issue, we introduce a two-branch geometric-relational deep learning framework. It boosts previous geometric classification methods with relational information. We also present a BIM object dataset IFCNet++, which contains both geometric and relational information about the objects. Experiments show that our framework can be flexibly adapted to different geometric methods. And relational features do act as a bonus to general geometric learning methods, obviously improving their classification performance, thus reducing the manual labor of checking models and improving the practical value of enriched BIM models.

Aria Everyday Activities DatasetZhaoyang Lv, Nicholas Charron, Pierre Moulon et al.
We present Aria Everyday Activities (AEA) Dataset, an egocentric multimodal open dataset recorded using Project Aria glasses. AEA contains 143 daily activity sequences recorded by multiple wearers in five geographically diverse indoor locations. Each of the recording contains multimodal sensor data recorded through the Project Aria glasses. In addition, AEA provides machine perception data including high frequency globally aligned 3D trajectories, scene point cloud, per-frame 3D eye gaze vector and time aligned speech transcription. In this paper, we demonstrate a few exemplar research applications enabled by this dataset, including neural scene reconstruction and prompted segmentation. AEA is an open source dataset that can be downloaded from https://www.projectaria.com/datasets/aea/. We are also providing open-source implementations and examples of how to use the dataset in Project Aria Tools https://github.com/facebookresearch/projectaria_tools.

CARAT: Contrastive Feature Reconstruction and Aggregation for Multi-Modal Multi-Label Emotion RecognitionCheng Peng, Ke Chen, Lidan Shou et al.
Multi-modal multi-label emotion recognition (MMER) aims to identify relevant emotions from multiple modalities. The challenge of MMER is how to effectively capture discriminative features for multiple labels from heterogeneous data. Recent studies are mainly devoted to exploring various fusion strategies to integrate multi-modal information into a unified representation for all labels. However, such a learning scheme not only overlooks the specificity of each modality but also fails to capture individual discriminative features for different labels. Moreover, dependencies of labels and modalities cannot be effectively modeled. To address these issues, this paper presents ContrAstive feature Reconstruction and AggregaTion (CARAT) for the MMER task. Specifically, we devise a reconstruction-based fusion mechanism to better model fine-grained modality-to-label dependencies by contrastively learning modal-separated and label-specific features. To further exploit the modality complementarity, we introduce a shuffle-based aggregation strategy to enrich co-occurrence collaboration among labels. Experiments on two benchmark datasets CMU-MOSEI and M3ED demonstrate the effectiveness of CARAT over state-of-the-art methods. Code is available at https://github.com/chengzju/CARAT.

PhaGO: Protein function annotation for bacteriophages by integrating the genomic contextJiaojiao Guan, Yongxin Ji, Cheng Peng et al.
Bacteriophages are viruses that target bacteria, playing a crucial role in microbial ecology. Phage proteins are important in understanding phage biology, such as virus infection, replication, and evolution. Although a large number of new phages have been identified via metagenomic sequencing, many of them have limited protein function annotation. Accurate function annotation of phage proteins presents several challenges, including their inherent diversity and the scarcity of annotated ones. Existing tools have yet to fully leverage the unique properties of phages in annotating protein functions. In this work, we propose a new protein function annotation tool for phages by leveraging the modular genomic structure of phage genomes. By employing embeddings from the latest protein foundation models and Transformer to capture contextual information between proteins in phage genomes, PhaGO surpasses state-of-the-art methods in annotating diverged proteins and proteins with uncommon functions by 6.78% and 13.05% improvement, respectively. PhaGO can annotate proteins lacking homology search results, which is critical for characterizing the rapidly accumulating phage genomes. We demonstrate the utility of PhaGO by identifying 688 potential holins in phages, which exhibit high structural conservation with known holins. The results show the potential of PhaGO to extend our understanding of newly discovered phages.

FusionRF: High-Fidelity Satellite Neural Radiance Fields from Multispectral and Panchromatic AcquisitionsMichael Sprintson, Rama Chellappa, Cheng Peng
We introduce FusionRF, a novel framework for digital surface reconstruction from satellite multispectral and panchromatic images. Current work has demonstrated the increased accuracy of neural photogrammetry for surface reconstruction from optical satellite images compared to algorithmic methods. Common satellites produce both a panchromatic and multispectral image, which contain high spatial and spectral information respectively. Current neural reconstruction methods require multispectral images to be upsampled with a pansharpening method using the spatial data in the panchromatic image. However, these methods may introduce biases and hallucinations due to domain gaps. FusionRF introduces joint image fusion during optimization through a novel cross-resolution kernel that learns to resolve spatial resolution loss present in multispectral images. As input, FusionRF accepts the original multispectral and panchromatic data, eliminating the need for image preprocessing. FusionRF also leverages multimodal appearance embeddings that encode the image characteristics of each modality and view within a uniform representation. By optimizing on both modalities, FusionRF learns to fuse image modalities while performing reconstruction tasks and eliminates the need for a pansharpening preprocessing step. We evaluate our method on multispectral and panchromatic satellite images from the WorldView-3 satellite in various locations, and show that FusionRF provides an average of 17% reduction in depth reconstruction error, and renders sharp training and novel views.

Scenes as Tokens: Multi-Scale Normal Distributions Transform Tokenizer for General 3D Vision-Language UnderstandingYutao Tang, Cheng Zhao, Gaurav Mittal et al.
Recent advances in 3D vision-language models (VLMs) highlight a strong potential for 3D scene understanding and reasoning. However, effectively tokenizing 3D scenes into holistic scene tokens, and leveraging these tokens across diverse 3D understanding tasks, remain highly challenging. We present NDTokenizer3D, a generalist 3D VLM that performs a wide range of 3D scene understanding tasks while naturally supporting human interactions, thereby bridging language-level reasoning with 3D spatial understanding. The core of our approach is a novel three-stage scene tokenization pipeline built upon a Multi-Scale Normal Distributions Transform (NDT) representation, paired with a Multi-Scale NDT Decoder (MSDec). Specifically, NDTokenizer3D first constructs a multi-scale NDT representation from raw high-resolution point clouds, preserving both global context and fine-grained geometric details. Next, the MSDec progressively fuses cross-scale NDT features, producing holistic scene tokens consumable by LLM endpoints. Beyond tokenization, MSDec is repurposed as a general interface for human-interactive prompting (points, boxes, masks) and segmentation-mask decoding, unifying diverse 3D scene understanding tasks within a single architecture. With this compact and unified design, NDTokenizer3D offers a fine-grained, general-purpose 3D VLM, achieving remarkable improvements in 3D Referring Segmentation, 3D Visual Question Answering, and 3D Dense Captioning.

FlexAvatar: Flexible Large Reconstruction Model for Animatable Gaussian Head Avatars with Detailed DeformationCheng Peng, Zhuo Su, Liao Wang et al.
We present FlexAvatar, a flexible large reconstruction model for high-fidelity 3D head avatars with detailed dynamic deformation from single or sparse images, without requiring camera poses or expression labels. It leverages a transformer-based reconstruction model with structured head query tokens as canonical anchor to aggregate flexible input-number-agnostic, camera-pose-free and expression-free inputs into a robust canonical 3D representation. For detailed dynamic deformation, we introduce a lightweight UNet decoder conditioned on UV-space position maps, which can produce detailed expression-dependent deformations in real time. To better capture rare but critical expressions like wrinkles and bared teeth, we also adopt a data distribution adjustment strategy during training to balance the distribution of these expressions in the training set. Moreover, a lightweight 10-second refinement can further enhances identity-specific details in extreme identities without affecting deformation quality. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our FlexAvatar achieves superior 3D consistency, detailed dynamic realism compared with previous methods, providing a practical solution for animatable 3D avatar creation.

SEHFS: Structural Entropy-Guided High-Order Correlation Learning for Multi-View Multi-Label Feature SelectionCheng Peng, Yonghao Li, Wanfu Gao et al.
In recent years, multi-view multi-label learning (MVML) has attracted extensive attention due to its close alignment to real-world scenarios. Information-theoretic methods have gained prominence for learning nonlinear correlations. However, two key challenges persist: first, features in real-world data commonly exhibit high-order structural correlations, but existing information-theoretic methods struggle to learn such correlations; second, commonly relying on heuristic optimization, information-theoretic methods are prone to converging to local optima. To address these two challenges, we propose a novel method called Structural Entropy Guided High-Order Correlation Learning for Multi-View Multi-Label Feature Selection (SEHFS). The core idea of SEHFS is to convert the feature graph into a structural-entropy-minimizing encoding tree, quantifying the information cost of high-order dependencies and thus learning high-order feature correlations beyond pairwise correlations. Specifically, features exhibiting strong high-order redundancy are grouped into a single cluster within the encoding tree, while inter-cluster feaeture correlations are minimized, thereby eliminating redundancy both within and across clusters. Furthermore, a new framework based on the fusion of information theory and matrix methods is adopted, which learns a shared semantic matrix and view-specific contribution matrices to reconstruct a global view matrix, thereby enhancing the information-theoretic method and balancing the global and local optimization. The ability of structural entropy to learn high-order correlations is theoretically established, and and both experiments on eight datasets from various domains and ablation studies demonstrate that SEHFS achieves superior performance in feature selection.

A Structure-Agnostic Co-Tuning Framework for LLMs and SLMs in Cloud-Edge SystemsYuze Liu, Yunhan Wang, Tiehua Zhang et al.
The surge in intelligent applications driven by large language models (LLMs) has made it increasingly difficult for bandwidth-limited cloud servers to process extensive LLM workloads in real time without compromising user data privacy. To solve these problems, recent research has focused on constructing cloud-edge consortia that integrate server-based LLM with small language models (SLMs) on mobile edge devices. Furthermore, designing collaborative training mechanisms within such consortia to enhance inference performance has emerged as a promising research direction. However, the cross-domain deployment of SLMs, coupled with structural heterogeneity in SLMs architectures, poses significant challenges to enhancing model performance. To this end, we propose Co-PLMs, a novel co-tuning framework for collaborative training of large and small language models, which integrates the process of structure-agnostic mutual learning to realize knowledge exchange between the heterogeneous language models. This framework employs distilled proxy models (DPMs) as bridges to enable collaborative training between the heterogeneous server-based LLM and on-device SLMs, while preserving the domain-specific insights of each device. The experimental results show that Co-PLMs outperform state-of-the-art methods, achieving average increases of 5.38% in Rouge-L and 4.88% in EM.

DreamCraft3D++: Efficient Hierarchical 3D Generation with Multi-Plane Reconstruction ModelJingxiang Sun, Cheng Peng, Ruizhi Shao et al.
We introduce DreamCraft3D++, an extension of DreamCraft3D that enables efficient high-quality generation of complex 3D assets. DreamCraft3D++ inherits the multi-stage generation process of DreamCraft3D, but replaces the time-consuming geometry sculpting optimization with a feed-forward multi-plane based reconstruction model, speeding up the process by 1000x. For texture refinement, we propose a training-free IP-Adapter module that is conditioned on the enhanced multi-view images to enhance texture and geometry consistency, providing a 4x faster alternative to DreamCraft3D's DreamBooth fine-tuning. Experiments on diverse datasets demonstrate DreamCraft3D++'s ability to generate creative 3D assets with intricate geometry and realistic 360° textures, outperforming state-of-the-art image-to-3D methods in quality and speed. The full implementation will be open-sourced to enable new possibilities in 3D content creation.

Improving Clinical Trial Recruitment using Clinical Narratives and Large Language ModelsZiyi Chen, Mengxian Lyu, Cheng Peng et al.
Screening patients for enrollment is a well-known, labor-intensive bottleneck that leads to under-enrollment and, ultimately, trial failures. Recent breakthroughs in large language models (LLMs) offer a promising opportunity to use artificial intelligence to improve screening. This study systematically explored both encoder- and decoder-based generative LLMs for screening clinical narratives to facilitate clinical trial recruitment. We examined both general-purpose LLMs and medical-adapted LLMs and explored three strategies to alleviate the "Lost in the Middle" issue when handling long documents, including 1) Original long-context: using the default context windows of LLMs, 2) NER-based extractive summarization: converting the long document into summarizations using named entity recognition, 3) RAG: dynamic evidence retrieval based on eligibility criteria. The 2018 N2C2 Track 1 benchmark dataset is used for evaluation. Our experimental results show that the MedGemma model with the RAG strategy achieved the best micro-F1 score of 89.05%, outperforming other models. Generative LLMs have remarkably improved trial criteria that require long-term reasoning across long documents, whereas trial criteria that span a short piece of context (e.g., lab tests) show incremental improvements. The real-world adoption of LLMs for trial recruitment must consider specific criteria for selecting among rule-based queries, encoder-based LLMs, and generative LLMs to maximize efficiency within reasonable computing costs.

Me LLaMA: Foundation Large Language Models for Medical ApplicationsQianqian Xie, Qingyu Chen, Aokun Chen et al.
Recent advancements in large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and LLaMA show promise in medical applications, yet challenges remain in medical language comprehension. This study presents Me-LLaMA, a new medical LLM family based on open-source LLaMA models, optimized for medical text analysis and diagnosis by leveraging large-scale, domain-specific datasets. The Me-LLaMA family, including foundation models Me-LLaMA 13/70B and their chat-enhanced versions, was developed through continued pre-training and instruction tuning with 129B tokens and 214K samples from biomedical and clinical sources. Training the 70B models required over 100,000 A100 GPU hours. Me-LLaMA's performance was evaluated across six medical text analysis tasks using 12 benchmark datasets and complex clinical case diagnosis, with automatic and human evaluations. Results indicate Me-LLaMA outperforms LLaMA and other open-source medical LLMs in zero-shot and supervised settings. Task-specific tuning further boosts performance, surpassing ChatGPT on 7 of 8 datasets and GPT-4 on 5 of 8. For complex clinical cases, Me-LLaMA achieves performance comparable to ChatGPT and GPT-4. This work underscores the importance of domain-specific data in developing medical LLMs and addresses the high computational costs involved in training, highlighting a balance between pre-training and fine-tuning strategies. Me-LLaMA models are now accessible under user agreements, providing a valuable resource for advancing medical AI.

CAM3R: Camera-Agnostic Model for 3D ReconstructionNamitha Guruprasad, Abhay Yadav, Cheng Peng et al.
Recovering dense 3D geometry from unposed images remains a foundational challenge in computer vision. Current state-of-the-art models are predominantly trained on perspective datasets, which implicitly constrains them to a standard pinhole camera geometry. As a result, these models suffer from significant geometric degradation when applied to wide-angle imagery captured via non-rectilinear optics, such as fisheye or panoramic sensors. To address this, we present CAM3R, a Camera-Agnostic, feed-forward Model for 3D Reconstruction capable of processing images from wide-angle camera models without prior calibration. Our framework consists of a two-view network which is bifurcated into a Ray Module (RM) to estimate per-pixel ray directions and a Cross-view Module (CVM) to infer radial distance with confidence maps, pointmaps, and relative poses. To unify these pairwise predictions into a consistent 3D scene, we introduce a Ray-Aware Global Alignment framework for pose refinement and scale optimization while strictly preserving the predicted local geometry. Extensive experiments on various camera model datasets, including panorama, fisheye and pinhole imagery, demonstrate that CAM3R establishes a new state-of-the-art in pose estimation and reconstruction.

Detecting HIV-Related Stigma in Clinical Narratives Using Large Language ModelsZiyi Chen, Yasir Khan, Mengyuan Zhang et al.
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related stigma is a critical psychosocial determinant of health for people living with HIV (PLWH), influencing mental health, engagement in care, and treatment outcomes. Although stigma-related experiences are documented in clinical narratives, there is a lack of off-the-shelf tools to extract and categorize them. This study aims to develop a large language model (LLM)-based tool for identifying HIV stigma from clinical notes. We identified clinical notes from PLWH receiving care at the University of Florida (UF) Health between 2012 and 2022. Candidate sentences were identified using expert-curated stigma-related keywords and iteratively expanded via clinical word embeddings. A total of 1,332 sentences were manually annotated across four stigma subscales: Concern with Public Attitudes, Disclosure Concerns, Negative Self-Image, and Personalized Stigma. We compared GatorTron-large and BERT as encoder-based baselines, and GPT-OSS-20B, LLaMA-8B, and MedGemma-27B as generative LLMs, under zero-shot and few-shot prompting. GatorTron-large achieved the best overall performance (Micro F1 = 0.62). Few-shot prompting substantially improved generative model performance, with 5-shot GPT-OSS-20B and LLaMA-8B achieving Micro-F1 scores of 0.57 and 0.59, respectively. Performance varied by stigma subscale, with Negative Self-Image showing the highest predictability and Personalized Stigma remaining the most challenging. Zero-shot generative inference exhibited non-trivial failure rates (up to 32%). This study develops the first practical NLP tool for identifying HIV stigma in clinical notes.

MedGPT-oss: Training a General-Purpose Vision-Language Model for BiomedicineKai Zhang, Zhengqing Yuan, Cheng Peng et al.
Biomedical multimodal assistants have the potential to unify radiology, pathology, and clinical-text reasoning, yet a critical deployment gap remains: top-performing systems are either closed-source or computationally prohibitive, precluding the on-premises deployment required for patient privacy and PHI compliance. We introduce MEDGPT-OSS, an open-weight, 20B-parameter generalist vision-language model designed to facilitate open research in clinical AI. Rather than relying on architectural complexity, MEDGPT-OSS pairs the GPT-oss language backbone with a visual front-end via a optimized, three-stage training curriculum. By progressively domain-adapting these modules through rigorous data curation and long-context multimodal alignment, we demonstrate that a 20B model can bridge the capacity gap. It successfully outperforms larger open medical models on out-of-distribution (OOD) multimodal reasoning and complex text-only clinical tasks. By unifying diverse modalities under a single instruction-following interface, MEDGPT-OSS maintains a parameter-efficient footprint fully compatible with commodity GPUs. We release the complete training recipe, open-weight checkpoints, and a rigorous evaluation harness to serve as a verifiable foundation for privacy-preserving, institution-specific clinical AI research.

Wrivinder: Towards Spatial Intelligence for Geo-locating Ground Images onto Satellite ImageryChandrakanth Gudavalli, Tajuddin Manhar Mohammed, Abhay Yadav et al.
Aligning ground-level imagery with geo-registered satellite maps is crucial for mapping, navigation, and situational awareness, yet remains challenging under large viewpoint gaps or when GPS is unreliable. We introduce Wrivinder, a zero-shot, geometry-driven framework that aggregates multiple ground photographs to reconstruct a consistent 3D scene and align it with overhead satellite imagery. Wrivinder combines SfM reconstruction, 3D Gaussian Splatting, semantic grounding, and monocular depth--based metric cues to produce a stable zenith-view rendering that can be directly matched to satellite context for metrically accurate camera geo-localization. To support systematic evaluation of this task, which lacks suitable benchmarks, we also release MC-Sat, a curated dataset linking multi-view ground imagery with geo-registered satellite tiles across diverse outdoor environments. Together, Wrivinder and MC-Sat provide a first comprehensive baseline and testbed for studying geometry-centered cross-view alignment without paired supervision. In zero-shot experiments, Wrivinder achieves sub-30\,m geolocation accuracy across both dense and large-area scenes, highlighting the promise of geometry-based aggregation for robust ground-to-satellite localization.

HetScene: Heterogeneity-Aware Diffusion for Dense Indoor Scene GenerationZini Chen, Junming Huang, Rong Zhang et al.
Generating controllable and physically plausible indoor scenes is a pivotal prerequisite for constructing high-fidelity simulation environments for embodied AI. However, existing deeplearning-based methods usually treat all objects as homogeneous instances within a unified generation process. While effective for sparse and simplistic layouts, they struggle to model realistic layouts with dense object arrangements and complex spatial dependencies, leadingto limited scalability and degraded physical plausibility. To deal with these challenges, we revisit indoor layout generation from the perspective of structural heterogeneity and decompose the objects into primary objects and secondary objects according to their distinct roles in shaping a scene. Based on this decomposition, we propose HetScene, a heterogeneous two-stage generation framework that decouples indoor layout synthesis into Structural Layout Generation (SLG) and Contextual Layout Generation (CLG). SLG first generates globally coherent structural layouts with only primary objects conditioned on text descriptions, top-down binary room masks, and spatial relation graphs, establishing a stable global macro-skeleton of large core furniture.

BenchCAD: A Comprehensive, Industry-Standard Benchmark for Programmatic CADHaozhe Zhang, Kaichen Liu, Miaomiao Chen et al.
Industrial Computer-Aided Design (CAD) code generation requires models to produce executable parametric programs from visual or textual inputs. Beyond recognizing the outer shape of a part, this task involves understanding its 3D structure, inferring engineering parameters, and choosing CAD operations that reflect how the part would be designed and manufactured. Despite the promise of Multimodal large language models (MLLMs) for this task, they are rarely evaluated on whether these capabilities jointly hold in realistic industrial CAD settings. We present BenchCAD, a unified benchmark for industrial CAD reasoning. BenchCAD contains 17,900 execution-verified CadQuery programs across 106 industrial part families, including bevel gears, compression springs, twist drills, and other reusable engineering designs. It evaluates models through visual question answering, code question answering, image-to-code generation, and instruction-guided code editing, enabling fine-grained analysis across perception, parametric abstraction, and executable program synthesis. Across 10+ frontier models, BenchCAD shows that current systems often recover coarse outer geometry but fail to produce faithful parametric CAD programs. Common failures include missing fine 3D structure, misinterpreting industrial design parameters, and replacing essential operations such as sweeps, lofts, and twist-extrudes with simpler sketch-and-extrude patterns. Fine-tuning and reinforcement learning improve in-distribution performance, but generalization to unseen part families remains limited. These results position BenchCAD as a benchmark for measuring and improving the industrial readiness of multimodal CAD automation.

SciFig: Towards Automating Scientific Figure GenerationSiyuan Huang, Yutong Gao, Juyang Bai et al.
Creating high-quality figures and visualizations for scientific papers is a time-consuming task that requires both deep domain knowledge and professional design skills. Despite over 2.5 million scientific papers published annually, the figure generation process remains largely manual. We introduce $\textbf{SciFig}$, an end-to-end AI agent system that generates publication-ready pipeline figures directly from research paper texts. SciFig uses a hierarchical layout generation strategy, which parses research descriptions to identify component relationships, groups related elements into functional modules, and generates inter-module connections to establish visual organization. Furthermore, an iterative chain-of-thought (CoT) feedback mechanism progressively improves layouts through multiple rounds of visual analysis and reasoning. We introduce a rubric-based evaluation framework that analyzes 2,219 real scientific figures to extract evaluation rubrics and automatically generates comprehensive evaluation criteria. SciFig demonstrates remarkable performance: achieving 70.1$\%$ overall quality on dataset-level evaluation and 66.2$\%$ on paper-specific evaluation, and consistently high scores across metrics such as visual clarity, structural organization, and scientific accuracy. SciFig figure generation pipeline and our evaluation benchmark will be open-sourced.

The Aria Gen 2 Pilot Dataset (A2PD) is an egocentric multimodal open dataset captured using the state-of-the-art Aria Gen 2 glasses. To facilitate timely access, A2PD is released incrementally with ongoing dataset enhancements. The initial release features Dia'ane, our primary subject, who records her daily activities alongside friends, each equipped with Aria Gen 2 glasses. It encompasses five primary scenarios: cleaning, cooking, eating, playing, and outdoor walking. In each of the scenarios, we provide comprehensive raw sensor data and output data from various machine perception algorithms. These data illustrate the device's ability to perceive the wearer, the surrounding environment, and interactions between the wearer and the environment, while maintaining robust performance across diverse users and conditions. The A2PD is publicly available at projectaria.com, with open-source tools and usage examples provided in Project Aria Tools.

A Parameter-Efficient Transfer Learning Approach through Multitask Prompt Distillation and Decomposition for Clinical NLPCheng Peng, Mengxian Lyu, Ziyi Chen et al.
Existing prompt-based fine-tuning methods typically learn task-specific prompts independently, imposing significant computing and storage overhead at scale when deploying multiple clinical natural language processing (NLP) systems. We present a multitask prompt distillation and decomposition framework that learns a single shared metaprompt from 21 diverse clinical source tasks and adapts it to unseen target tasks with fewer than 0.05% trainable parameters. Evaluated across five clinical NLP task types (named entity recognition, relation extraction, question answering, natural language inference, and summarization) on 10 held-out target datasets using three backbone models (LLaMA 3.1 8B, Meditron3 8B, gpt-oss 20B), our framework consistently outperforms LoRA by 1.5~1.7% despite using orders of magnitude fewer parameters, and exceeds single-task prompt tuning by 6.1~6.6%. The gpt-oss 20B model achieves the highest overall performance, particularly on clinical reasoning tasks. The strong zero- and few-shot performance demonstrates better transferability of the shared prompt representation.

Uncertainty-quantified Pulse Signal Recovery from Facial Video using Regularized Stochastic InterpolantsVineet R. Shenoy, Cheng Peng, Rama Chellappa et al.
Imaging Photoplethysmography (iPPG), an optical procedure which recovers a human's blood volume pulse (BVP) waveform using pixel readout from a camera, is an exciting research field with many researchers performing clinical studies of iPPG algorithms. While current algorithms to solve the iPPG task have shown outstanding performance on benchmark datasets, no state-of-the art algorithms, to the best of our knowledge, performs test-time sampling of solution space, precluding an uncertainty analysis that is critical for clinical applications. We address this deficiency though a new paradigm named Regularized Interpolants with Stochasticity for iPPG (RIS-iPPG). Modeling iPPG recovery as an inverse problem, we build probability paths that evolve the camera pixel distribution to the ground-truth signal distribution by predicting the instantaneous flow and score vectors of a time-dependent stochastic process; and at test-time, we sample the posterior distribution of the correct BVP waveform given the camera pixel intensity measurements by solving a stochastic differential equation. Given that physiological changes are slowly varying, we show that iPPG recovery can be improved through regularization that maximizes the correlation between the residual flow vector predictions of two adjacent time windows. Experimental results on three datasets show that RIS-iPPG provides superior reconstruction quality and uncertainty estimates of the reconstruction, a critical tool for the widespread adoption of iPPG algorithms in clinical and consumer settings.

BAGS: Blur Agnostic Gaussian Splatting through Multi-Scale Kernel ModelingCheng Peng, Yutao Tang, Yifan Zhou et al.
Recent efforts in using 3D Gaussians for scene reconstruction and novel view synthesis can achieve impressive results on curated benchmarks; however, images captured in real life are often blurry. In this work, we analyze the robustness of Gaussian-Splatting-based methods against various image blur, such as motion blur, defocus blur, downscaling blur, \etc. Under these degradations, Gaussian-Splatting-based methods tend to overfit and produce worse results than Neural-Radiance-Field-based methods. To address this issue, we propose Blur Agnostic Gaussian Splatting (BAGS). BAGS introduces additional 2D modeling capacities such that a 3D-consistent and high quality scene can be reconstructed despite image-wise blur. Specifically, we model blur by estimating per-pixel convolution kernels from a Blur Proposal Network (BPN). BPN is designed to consider spatial, color, and depth variations of the scene to maximize modeling capacity. Additionally, BPN also proposes a quality-assessing mask, which indicates regions where blur occur. Finally, we introduce a coarse-to-fine kernel optimization scheme; this optimization scheme is fast and avoids sub-optimal solutions due to a sparse point cloud initialization, which often occurs when we apply Structure-from-Motion on blurry images. We demonstrate that BAGS achieves photorealistic renderings under various challenging blur conditions and imaging geometry, while significantly improving upon existing approaches.

Improving Automatic Summarization of Radiology Reports through Mid-Training of Large Language ModelsMengxian Lyu, Cheng Peng, Ziyi Chen et al.
Automatic summarization of radiology reports is an essential application to reduce the burden on physicians. Previous studies have widely used the "pre-training, fine-tuning" strategy to adapt large language models (LLMs) for summarization. This study proposed a subdomain adaptation through a mid-training method to improve summarization. We explored three adaptation strategies: (1) general-domain pre-training, (2) clinical-domain pre-training, and (3) clinical-domain pre-training followed by subdomain mid-training. We developed models using large-scale clinical text from the University of Florida (UF) Health and conducted mid-training and fine-tuning experiments using widely used benchmark datasets including OpenI and MIMIC-CXR. The experimental results show that the mid-trained model, GatorTronT5-Radio, achieved the best performance, outperforming models without mid-training in both text-based measures (ROUGE-L) and factuality measures (RadGraph-F1). Our mid-training methods also demonstrate better few-shot learning and could alleviate the "cold start" problem reported in previous studies as a learning barrier. Our findings support the use of "pre-training, mid-training, fine-tuning," instead of the widely used direct fine-tuning strategy.

GenEx: Generating an Explorable WorldTaiming Lu, Tianmin Shu, Junfei Xiao et al.
Understanding, navigating, and exploring the 3D physical real world has long been a central challenge in the development of artificial intelligence. In this work, we take a step toward this goal by introducing GenEx, a system capable of planning complex embodied world exploration, guided by its generative imagination that forms priors (expectations) about the surrounding environments. GenEx generates an entire 3D-consistent imaginative environment from as little as a single RGB image, bringing it to life through panoramic video streams. Leveraging scalable 3D world data curated from Unreal Engine, our generative model is rounded in the physical world. It captures a continuous 360-degree environment with little effort, offering a boundless landscape for AI agents to explore and interact with. GenEx achieves high-quality world generation, robust loop consistency over long trajectories, and demonstrates strong 3D capabilities such as consistency and active 3D mapping. Powered by generative imagination of the world, GPT-assisted agents are equipped to perform complex embodied tasks, including both goal-agnostic exploration and goal-driven navigation. These agents utilize predictive expectation regarding unseen parts of the physical world to refine their beliefs, simulate different outcomes based on potential decisions, and make more informed choices. In summary, we demonstrate that GenEx provides a transformative platform for advancing embodied AI in imaginative spaces and brings potential for extending these capabilities to real-world exploration.

Prior-Agnostic Robust Forecast AggregationZhi Chen, Cheng Peng, Wei Tang
Robust forecast aggregation combines the predictions of multiple information sources to perform well in the worst case across all possible information structures. Previous work largely focuses on settings with a known binary state space, where the state is either 0 or 1. We study prior-agnostic robust forecast aggregation in which the aggregator observes only experts' reports, yet is ignorant of both the underlying joint information structure and the full prior, including the underlying state space. Unlike the standard model that fixes the binary state space {0, 1}, we allow the (binary) unknown state values to be arbitrary numbers in [0, 1], so the same reported probability may correspond to very different realized outcome frequencies across environments. Our main contribution is a simple, explicit, closed-form log-odds aggregator that linearly pools forecasts in logit space, together with (nearly-)tight minimax-regret guarantees across three knowledge regimes. We first show that under conditionally independent (CI) signals, robust aggregation with an unknown state space is strictly harder than in the known-state setting by establishing a larger lower bound, and our aggregation rule can achieve a worst-case regret of 0.0255. Along the way, we also characterize tight regret bounds for Blackwell-ordered structures and for general information structures. In the classical setting with known state space {0,1}, our aggregator achieves regret strictly below 0.0226 for CI structures. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first explicit closed-form aggregator that achieves a regret upper bound strictly less than 0.0226. Finally, we extend the model where the aggregator additionally knows each expert's marginal forecast distribution; in this setting, with the CI structures, we show that a generalized log-odds rule achieves regret of 0.0228, complementing with a lower bound of 0.0225.

Generative Large Language Models Are All-purpose Text Analytics Engines: Text-to-text Learning Is All Your NeedCheng Peng, Xi Yang, Aokun Chen et al.
Objective To solve major clinical natural language processing (NLP) tasks using a unified text-to-text learning architecture based on a generative large language model (LLM) via prompt tuning. Methods We formulated 7 key clinical NLP tasks as text-to-text learning and solved them using one unified generative clinical LLM, GatorTronGPT, developed using GPT-3 architecture and trained with up to 20 billion parameters. We adopted soft prompts (i.e., trainable vectors) with frozen LLM, where the LLM parameters were not updated (i.e., frozen) and only the vectors of soft prompts were updated, known as prompt tuning. We added additional soft prompts as a prefix to the input layer, which were optimized during the prompt tuning. We evaluated the proposed method using 7 clinical NLP tasks and compared them with previous task-specific solutions based on Transformer models. Results and Conclusion The proposed approach achieved state-of-the-art performance for 5 out of 7 major clinical NLP tasks using one unified generative LLM. Our approach outperformed previous task-specific transformer models by ~3% for concept extraction and 7% for relation extraction applied to social determinants of health, 3.4% for clinical concept normalization, 3.4~10% for clinical abbreviation disambiguation, and 5.5~9% for natural language inference. Our approach also outperformed a previously developed prompt-based machine reading comprehension (MRC) model, GatorTron-MRC, for clinical concept and relation extraction. The proposed approach can deliver the ``one model for all`` promise from training to deployment using a unified generative LLM.

Geometry Field Splatting with Gaussian SurfelsKaiwen Jiang, Venkataram Sivaram, Cheng Peng et al.
Geometric reconstruction of opaque surfaces from images is a longstanding challenge in computer vision, with renewed interest from volumetric view synthesis algorithms using radiance fields. We leverage the geometry field proposed in recent work for stochastic opaque surfaces, which can then be converted to volume densities. We adapt Gaussian kernels or surfels to splat the geometry field rather than the volume, enabling precise reconstruction of opaque solids. Our first contribution is to derive an efficient and almost exact differentiable rendering algorithm for geometry fields parameterized by Gaussian surfels, while removing current approximations involving Taylor series and no self-attenuation. Next, we address the discontinuous loss landscape when surfels cluster near geometry, showing how to guarantee that the rendered color is a continuous function of the colors of the kernels, irrespective of ordering. Finally, we use latent representations with spherical harmonics encoded reflection vectors rather than spherical harmonics encoded colors to better address specular surfaces. We demonstrate significant improvement in the quality of reconstructed 3D surfaces on widely-used datasets.

SPARS3R: Semantic Prior Alignment and Regularization for Sparse 3D ReconstructionYutao Tang, Yuxiang Guo, Deming Li et al.
Recent efforts in Gaussian-Splat-based Novel View Synthesis can achieve photorealistic rendering; however, such capability is limited in sparse-view scenarios due to sparse initialization and over-fitting floaters. Recent progress in depth estimation and alignment can provide dense point cloud with few views; however, the resulting pose accuracy is suboptimal. In this work, we present SPARS3R, which combines the advantages of accurate pose estimation from Structure-from-Motion and dense point cloud from depth estimation. To this end, SPARS3R first performs a Global Fusion Alignment process that maps a prior dense point cloud to a sparse point cloud from Structure-from-Motion based on triangulated correspondences. RANSAC is applied during this process to distinguish inliers and outliers. SPARS3R then performs a second, Semantic Outlier Alignment step, which extracts semantically coherent regions around the outliers and performs local alignment in these regions. Along with several improvements in the evaluation process, we demonstrate that SPARS3R can achieve photorealistic rendering with sparse images and significantly outperforms existing approaches.

AGENT-X: Adaptive Guideline-based Expert Network for Threshold-free AI-generated teXt detectionJiatao Li, Mao Ye, Cheng Peng et al. · pku
Existing AI-generated text detection methods heavily depend on large annotated datasets and external threshold tuning, restricting interpretability, adaptability, and zero-shot effectiveness. To address these limitations, we propose AGENT-X, a zero-shot multi-agent framework informed by classical rhetoric and systemic functional linguistics. Specifically, we organize detection guidelines into semantic, stylistic, and structural dimensions, each independently evaluated by specialized linguistic agents that provide explicit reasoning and robust calibrated confidence via semantic steering. A meta agent integrates these assessments through confidence-aware aggregation, enabling threshold-free, interpretable classification. Additionally, an adaptive Mixture-of-Agent router dynamically selects guidelines based on inferred textual characteristics. Experiments on diverse datasets demonstrate that AGENT-X substantially surpasses state-of-the-art supervised and zero-shot approaches in accuracy, interpretability, and generalization.
