FFCNet: Fourier Transform-Based Frequency Learning and Complex Convolutional Network for Colon Disease Classification

Reliable automatic classification of colonoscopy images is of great significance in assessing the stage of colonic lesions and formulating appropriate treatment plans. However, it is challenging due to uneven brightness, location variability, inter-class similarity, and intra-class dissimilarity, affecting the classification accuracy. To address the above issues, we propose a Fourier-based Frequency Complex Network (FFCNet) for colon disease classification in this study. Specifically, FFCNet is a novel complex network that enables the combination of complex convolutional networks with frequency learning to overcome the loss of phase information caused by real convolution operations. Also, our Fourier transform transfers the average brightness of an image to a point in the spectrum (the DC component), alleviating the effects of uneven brightness by decoupling image content and brightness. Moreover, the image patch scrambling module in FFCNet generates random local spectral blocks, empowering the network to learn long-range and local diseasespecific features and improving the discriminative ability of hard samples. We evaluated the proposed FFCNet on an in-house dataset with 2568 colonoscopy images, showing our method achieves high performance outperforming previous state-of-the art methods with an accuracy of 86:35% and an accuracy of 4.46% higher than the backbone. Light Field Depth Estimation via Stitched Epipolar Plane Images

Depth estimation is a fundamental problem in light field processing. Epipolar-plane image (EPI)-based methods often encounter challenges such as low accuracy in slope computation due to discretization errors and limited angular resolution. Besides, existing methods perform well in most regions but struggle to produce sharp edges in occluded regions and resolve ambiguities in texture-less regions. To address these issues, we propose the concept of stitched-EPI (SEPI) to enhance slope computation. SEPI achieves this by shifting and concatenating lines from different EPIs that correspond to the same 3D point. Moreover, we introduce the half-SEPI algorithm, which focuses exclusively on the non-occluded portion of lines to handle occlusion. Additionally, we present a depth propagation strategy aimed at improving depth estimation in texture-less regions. This strategy involves determining the depth of such regions by progressing from the edges towards the interior, prioritizing accurate regions over coarse regions. Through extensive experimental evaluations and ablation studies, we validate the effectiveness of our proposed method. The results demonstrate its superior ability to generate more accurate and robust depth maps across all regions compared to state-of-the-art methods. Searching for Efficient Neural Architectures for On-Device ML on Edge TPUs

On-device ML accelerators are becoming a standard in modern mobile system-on-chips (SoC). Neural architecture search (NAS) comes to the rescue for efficiently utilizing the high compute throughput offered by these accelerators. However, existing NAS frameworks have several practical limitations in scaling to multiple tasks and different target platforms. In this work, we provide a two-pronged approach to this challenge: (i) a NAS-enabling infrastructure that decouples model cost evaluation, search space design, and the NAS algorithm to rapidly target various on-device ML tasks, and (ii) search spaces crafted from group convolution based inverted bottleneck (IBN) variants that provide flexible quality/performance trade-offs on ML accelerators, complementing the existing full and depthwise convolution based IBNs. Using this approach we target a state-of-the-art mobile platform, Google Tensor SoC, and demonstrate neural architectures that improve the quality-performance pareto frontier for various computer vision (classification, detection, segmentation) as well as natural language processing tasks.

3D Face Parsing via Surface Parameterization and 2D Semantic Segmentation Network

Face parsing assigns pixel-wise semantic labels as the face representation for computers, which is the fundamental part of many advanced face technologies. Compared with 2D face parsing, 3D face parsing shows more potential to achieve better performance and further application, but it is still challenging due to 3D mesh data computation. Recent works introduced different methods for 3D surface segmentation, while the performance is still limited. In this paper, we propose a method based on the "3D-2D-3D" strategy to accomplish 3D face parsing. The topological disk-like 2D face image containing spatial and textural information is transformed from the sampled 3D face data through the face parameterization algorithm, and a specific 2D network called CPFNet is proposed to achieve the semantic segmentation of the 2D parameterized face data with multi-scale technologies and feature aggregation. The 2D semantic result is then inversely re-mapped to 3D face data, which finally achieves the 3D face parsing. Experimental results show that both CPFNet and the "3D-2D-3D" strategy accomplish high-quality 3D face parsing and outperform state-of-the-art 2D networks as well as 3D methods in both qualitative and quantitative comparisons.

UniTriGen: Unified Triplet Generation of Aligned Visible-Infrared-Label for Few-Shot RGB-T Semantic Segmentation

RGB-T semantic segmentation requires strictly aligned VIS-IR-Label triplets; however, such aligned triplet data are often scarce in real-world scenarios. Existing generative augmentation methods usually adopt cascaded generation paradigms, decomposing joint triplet generation into local conditional processes. As a result, consistency among VIS, IR, and Label in spatial structure, semantic content, and cross-modal details cannot be reliably maintained. To address this issue, we propose UniTriGen, a unified triplet generation framework that directly generates spatially aligned, semantically consistent, and modality complementary VIS-IR-Label triplets under the guidance of text prompts. UniTriGen first introduces a unified triplet generation mechanism, where VIS, IR, and Label are jointly encoded into a shared latent space and modeled with a diffusion process to enforce global cross-modal consistency. Lightweight modality-specific residual adapters are further integrated into this mechanism to accommodate modality-specific imaging characteristics and output formats. To mitigate generation bias caused by imbalanced scene and class distributions in limited paired triplets, UniTriGen also employs a scene-balanced and class-aware few-shot sampling strategy, which induces a more balanced sampling distribution and enhances the scene and class diversity of generated triplets. Experiments show that UniTriGen generates high-quality aligned triplets from limited real paired data, thereby achieving consistent performance improvements across various RGB-T semantic segmentation models.

AWSnet: An Auto-weighted Supervision Attention Network for Myocardial Scar and Edema Segmentation in Multi-sequence Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Images

Multi-sequence cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) provides essential pathology information (scar and edema) to diagnose myocardial infarction. However, automatic pathology segmentation can be challenging due to the difficulty of effectively exploring the underlying information from the multi-sequence CMR data. This paper aims to tackle the scar and edema segmentation from multi-sequence CMR with a novel auto-weighted supervision framework, where the interactions among different supervised layers are explored under a task-specific objective using reinforcement learning. Furthermore, we design a coarse-to-fine framework to boost the small myocardial pathology region segmentation with shape prior knowledge. The coarse segmentation model identifies the left ventricle myocardial structure as a shape prior, while the fine segmentation model integrates a pixel-wise attention strategy with an auto-weighted supervision model to learn and extract salient pathological structures from the multi-sequence CMR data. Extensive experimental results on a publicly available dataset from Myocardial pathology segmentation combining multi-sequence CMR (MyoPS 2020) demonstrate our method can achieve promising performance compared with other state-of-the-art methods. Our method is promising in advancing the myocardial pathology assessment on multi-sequence CMR data. Learning based Deep Disentangling Light Field Reconstruction and Disparity Estimation Application

Light field cameras have a wide range of uses due to their ability to simultaneously record light intensity and direction. The angular resolution of light fields is important for downstream tasks such as depth estimation, yet is often difficult to improve due to hardware limitations. Conventional methods tend to perform poorly against the challenge of large disparity in sparse light fields, while general CNNs have difficulty extracting spatial and angular features coupled together in 4D light fields. The light field disentangling mechanism transforms the 4D light field into 2D image format, which is more favorable for CNN for feature extraction. In this paper, we propose a Deep Disentangling Mechanism, which inherits the principle of the light field disentangling mechanism and further develops the design of the feature extractor and adds advanced network structure. We design a light-field reconstruction network (i.e., DDASR) on the basis of the Deep Disentangling Mechanism, and achieve SOTA performance in the experiments. In addition, we design a Block Traversal Angular Super-Resolution Strategy for the practical application of depth estimation enhancement where the input views is often higher than 2x2 in the experiments resulting in a high memory usage, which can reduce the memory usage while having a better reconstruction performance.

Unsupervised Learning of High-resolution Light Field Imaging via Beam Splitter-based Hybrid Lenses

In this paper, we design a beam splitter-based hybrid light field imaging prototype to record 4D light field image and high-resolution 2D image simultaneously, and make a hybrid light field dataset. The 2D image could be considered as the high-resolution ground truth corresponding to the low-resolution central sub-aperture image of 4D light field image. Subsequently, we propose an unsupervised learning-based super-resolution framework with the hybrid light field dataset, which adaptively settles the light field spatial super-resolution problem with a complex degradation model. Specifically, we design two loss functions based on pre-trained models that enable the super-resolution network to learn the detailed features and light field parallax structure with only one ground truth. Extensive experiments demonstrate the same superiority of our approach with supervised learning-based state-of-the-art ones. To our knowledge, it is the first end-to-end unsupervised learning-based spatial super-resolution approach in light field imaging research, whose input is available from our beam splitter-based hybrid light field system. The hardware and software together may help promote the application of light field super-resolution to a great extent.

Light Field Imaging in the Restrictive Object Space based on Flexible Angular Plane

In some applications, the object space of light field imaging system is restrictive, such as industrial and medical endoscopes. If the traditional light field imaging system is used in the restrictive object space (ROS) directly but without any specific considerations, the ROS will lead to severe microlens image distortions and then affects light field decoding, calibration and 3D reconstruction. The light field imaging in restrictive object space (ROS-LF) is complicated but significant. In this paper, we first deduce that the reason of the microlens image deviation is the position variation of the angular plane, then we propose the flexible angular plane for ROS-LF, while in the traditional light field the angular plane always coincides with the main lens plane. Subsequently, we propose the microlens image non-distortion principle for ROS-LF and introduce the ROS-LF imaging principle. We demonstrate that the difference is an aperture constant term between the ROS-LF and traditional light field imaging models. At last, we design a ROS-LF simulated system and calibrate it to verify principles proposed in this paper.

Pulmonary Fissure Segmentation in CT Images Based on ODoS Filter and Shape Features

Priori knowledge of pulmonary anatomy plays a vital role in diagnosis of lung diseases. In CT images, pulmonary fissure segmentation is a formidable mission due to various of factors. To address the challenge, an useful approach based on ODoS filter and shape features is presented for pulmonary fissure segmentation. Here, we adopt an ODoS filter by merging the orientation information and magnitude information to highlight structure features for fissure enhancement, which can effectively distinguish between pulmonary fissures and clutters. Motivated by the fact that pulmonary fissures appear as linear structures in 2D space and planar structures in 3D space in orientation field, an orientation curvature criterion and an orientation partition scheme are fused to separate fissure patches and other structures in different orientation partition, which can suppress parts of clutters. Considering the shape difference between pulmonary fissures and tubular structures in magnitude field, a shape measure approach and a 3D skeletonization model are combined to segment pulmonary fissures for clutters removal. When applying our scheme to 55 chest CT scans which acquired from a publicly available LOLA11 datasets, the median F1-score, False Discovery Rate (FDR), and False Negative Rate (FNR) respectively are 0.896, 0.109, and 0.100, which indicates that the presented method has a satisfactory pulmonary fissure segmentation performance.

Communication-Efficient Distributed Estimator for Generalized Linear Models with a Diverging Number of Covariates

Distributed statistical inference has recently attracted immense attention. The asymptotic efficiency of the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE), the one-step MLE, and the aggregated estimating equation estimator are established for generalized linear models under the "large $n$, diverging $p_n$" framework, where the dimension of the covariates $p_n$ grows to infinity at a polynomial rate $o(n^α)$ for some $0<α<1$. Then a novel method is proposed to obtain an asymptotically efficient estimator for large-scale distributed data by two rounds of communication. In this novel method, the assumption on the number of servers is more relaxed and thus practical for real-world applications. Simulations and a case study demonstrate the satisfactory finite-sample performance of the proposed estimators.

Simulation of Skin Stretching around the Forehead Wrinkles in Rhytidectomy

Objective: Skin stretching around the forehead wrinkles is an important method in rhytidectomy. Proper parameters are required to evaluate the surgical effect. In this paper, a simulation method was proposed to obtain the parameters. Methods: Three-dimensional point cloud data with a resolution of 50 μm were employed. First, a smooth supporting contour under the wrinkled forehead was generated via b-spline interpolation and extrapolation to constrain the deformation of the wrinkled zone. Then, based on the vector formed intrinsic finite element (VFIFE) algorithm, the simulation was implemented in Matlab for the deformation of wrinkled forehead skin in the stretching process. Finally, the stress distribution and the residual wrinkles of forehead skin were employed to evaluate the surgical effect. Results: Although the residual wrinkles are similar when forehead wrinkles are finitely stretched, their stress distribution changes greatly. This indicates that the stress distribution in the skin is effective to evaluate the surgical effect, and the forehead wrinkles are easily to be overstretched, which may lead to potential skin injuries. Conclusion: The simulation method can predict stress distribution and residual wrinkles after forehead wrinkle stretching surgery, which can be potentially used to control the surgical process and further reduce risks of skin injury.

AI-Skin : Skin Disease Recognition based on Self-learning and Wide Data Collection through a Closed Loop Framework

There are a lot of hidden dangers in the change of human skin conditions, such as the sunburn caused by long-time exposure to ultraviolet radiation, which not only has aesthetic impact causing psychological depression and lack of self-confidence, but also may even be life-threatening due to skin canceration. Current skin disease researches adopt the auto-classification system for improving the accuracy rate of skin disease classification. However, the excessive dependence on the image sample database is unable to provide individualized diagnosis service for different population groups. To overcome this problem, a medical AI framework based on data width evolution and self-learning is put forward in this paper to provide skin disease medical service meeting the requirement of real time, extendibility and individualization. First, the wide collection of data in the close-loop information flow of user and remote medical data center is discussed. Next, a data set filter algorithm based on information entropy is given, to lighten the load of edge node and meanwhile improve the learning ability of remote cloud analysis model. In addition, the framework provides an external algorithm load module, which can be compatible with the application requirements according to the model selected. Three kinds of deep learning model, i.e. LeNet-5, AlexNet and VGG16, are loaded and compared, which have verified the universality of the algorithm load module. The experiment platform for the proposed real-time, individualized and extensible skin disease recognition system is built. And the system's computation and communication delay under the interaction scenario between tester and remote data center are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the system we put forward is reliable and effective.

Global and Local Information Based Deep Network for Skin Lesion Segmentation

With a large influx of dermoscopy images and a growing shortage of dermatologists, automatic dermoscopic image analysis plays an essential role in skin cancer diagnosis. In this paper, a new deep fully convolutional neural network (FCNN) is proposed to automatically segment melanoma out of skin images by end-to-end learning with only pixels and labels as inputs. Our proposed FCNN is capable of using both local and global information to segment melanoma by adopting skipping layers. The public benchmark database consisting of 150 validation images, 600 test images and 2000 training images in the melanoma detection challenge 2017 at International Symposium Biomedical Imaging 2017 is used to test the performance of our algorithm. All large size images (for example, $4000\times 6000$ pixels) are reduced to much smaller images with $384\times 384$ pixels (more than 10 times smaller). We got and submitted preliminary results to the challenge without any pre or post processing. The performance of our proposed method could be further improved by data augmentation and by avoiding image size reduction.

Saliency Detection for Improving Object Proposals

Object proposals greatly benefit object detection task in recent state-of-the-art works. However, the existing object proposals usually have low localization accuracy at high intersection over union threshold. To address it, we apply saliency detection to each bounding box to improve their quality in this paper. We first present a geodesic saliency detection method in contour, which is designed to find closed contours. Then, we apply it to each candidate box with multi-sizes, and refined boxes can be easily produced in the obtained saliency maps which are further used to calculate saliency scores for proposal ranking. Experiments on PASCAL VOC 2007 test dataset demonstrate the proposed refinement approach can greatly improve existing models.
