Variational time discretization of geodesic calculusMartin Rumpf, Benedikt Wirth
We analyze a variational time discretization of geodesic calculus on finite- and certain classes of infinite-dimensional Riemannian manifolds. We investigate the fundamental properties of discrete geodesics, the associated discrete logarithm, discrete exponential maps, and discrete parallel transport, and we prove convergence to their continuous counterparts. The presented analysis is based on the direct methods in the calculus of variation, on $Γ$-convergence, and on weighted finite element error estimation. The convergence results of the discrete geodesic calculus are experimentally confirmed for a basic model on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold. This provides a theoretical basis for applications in computer vision: In particular, discrete geodesics offer an effective tool for shape morphing and the computation of a distance between shapes, the discrete logarithm allows a linear representation of strongly nonlinear shape variability, the discrete exponential map provides a robust tool for shape extrapolation, and the discrete parallel transport can be used to transfer geometric details from one shape to another. The basic operations are exemplarily illustrated for two different shape spaces, the space of viscous volumetric objects and the space of discrete viscous shells.

We investigate a generalization of cubic splines to Riemannian manifolds. Spline curves are defined as minimizers of the spline energy - a combination of the Riemannian path energy and the time integral of the squared covariant derivative of the path velocity - under suitable interpolation conditions. A variational time discretization for the spline energy leads to a constrained optimization problem over discrete paths on the manifold. Existence of continuous and discrete spline curves is established using the direct method in the calculus of variations. Furthermore, the convergence of discrete spline paths to a continuous spline curve follows from the $Γ$-convergence of the discrete to the continuous spline energy. Finally, selected example settings are discussed, including splines on embedded finite-dimensional manifolds, on a high-dimensional manifold of discrete shells with applications in surface processing, and on the infinite-dimensional shape manifold of viscous rods.

Smooth Interpolation of Key Frames in a Riemannian Shell SpacePascal Huber, Ricardo Perl, Martin Rumpf
Splines and subdivision curves are flexible tools in the design and manipulation of curves in Euclidean space. In this paper we study generalizations of interpolating splines and subdivision schemes to the Riemannian manifold of shell surfaces in which the associated metric measures both bending and membrane distortion. The shells under consideration are assumed to be represented by Loop subdivision surfaces. This enables the animation of shells via the smooth interpolation of a given set of key frame control meshes. Using a variational time discretization of geodesics efficient numerical implementations can be derived. These are based on a discrete geodesic interpolation, discrete geometric logarithm, discrete exponential map, and discrete parallel transport. With these building blocks at hand discrete Riemannian cardinal splines and three different types of discrete, interpolatory subdivision schemes are defined. Numerical results for two different subdivision shell models underline the potential of this approach in key frame animation.

3D Adaptive Central Schemes: part I Algorithms for Assembling the Dual MeshSebastian Noelle, Wolfram Rosenbaum, Martin Rumpf
Central schemes are frequently used for incompressible and compressible flow calculations. The present paper is the first in a forthcoming series where a new approach to a 2nd order accurate Finite Volume scheme operating on cartesian grids is discussed. Here we start with an adaptively refined cartesian primal grid in 3D and present a construction technique for the staggered dual grid based on $L^{\infty}$-Voronoi cells. The local refinement constellation on the primal grid leads to a finite number of uniquely defined local patterns on a primal cell. Assembling adjacent local patterns forms the dual grid. All local patterns can be analysed in advance. Later, running the numerical scheme on staggered grids, all necessary geometric information can instantly be retrieved from lookup-tables. The new scheme is compared to established ones in terms of algorithmical complexity and computational effort.

Hysteresis in Magnetic Shape Memory Composites: Modeling and SimulationSergio Conti, Martin Lenz, Martin Rumpf
Magnetic shape memory alloys are characterized by the coupling between a structural phase transition and magnetic one. This permits to control the shape change via an external magnetic field, at least in single crystals. Composite materials with single-crystalline particles embedded in a softer matrix have been proposed as a way to overcome the blocking of the transformation at grain boundaries. We investigate hysteresis phenomena for small NiMnGa single crystals embedded in a polymer matrix for slowly varying magnetic fields. The evolution of the microstructure is studied within the rate-independent variational framework proposed by Mielke and Theil (1999). The underlying variational model incorporates linearized elasticity, micromagnetism, stray field and a dissipation term proportional to the volume swept by the phase boundary. The time discretization is based on an incremental minimization of the sum of energy and dissipation. A backtracking approach is employed to approximately ensure the global minimality condition. We illustrate and discuss the influence of the particle geometry (volume fraction, shape, arrangement) and the polymer elastic parameters on the observed hysteresis and compare with recent experimental results.

Stochastic Dominance Constraints in Elastic Shape OptimizationSergio Conti, Martin Rumpf, Rüdiger Schultz et al.
This paper deals with shape optimization for elastic materials under stochastic loads. It transfers the paradigm of stochastic dominance, which allows for flexible risk aversion via comparison with benchmark random variables, from finite-dimensional stochastic programming to shape optimization. Rather than handling risk aversion in the objective, this enables risk aversion by including dominance constraints that single out subsets of nonanticipative shapes which compare favorably to a chosen stochastic benchmark. This new class of stochastic shape optimization problems arises by optimizing over such feasible sets. The analytical description is built on risk-averse cost measures. The underlying cost functional is of compliance type plus a perimeter term, in the implementation shapes are represented by a phase field which permits an easy estimate of a regularized perimeter. The analytical description and the numerical implementation of dominance constraints are built on risk-averse measures for the cost functional. A suitable numerical discretization is obtained using finite elements both for the displacement and the phase field function. Different numerical experiments demonstrate the potential of the proposed stochastic shape optimization model and in particular the impact of high variability of forces or probabilities in the different realizations.

Bézier curves are a widespread tool for the design of curves in Euclidian space. This paper generalizes the notion of Bézier curves to the infinite-dimensional space of images. To this end the space of images is equipped with a Riemannian metric which measures the cost of image transport and intensity variation in the sense of the metamorphosis model by Miller and Younes. Bézier curves are then computed via the Riemannian version of de Casteljau's algorithm, which is based on a hierarchical scheme of convex combination along geodesic curves. Geodesics are approximated using a variational discretization of the Riemannian path energy. This leads to a generalized de Casteljau method to compute suitable discrete Bézier curves in image space. Selected test cases demonstrate qualitative properties of the approach. Furthermore, a Bézier approach for the modulation of face interpolation and shape animation via image sketches is presented.

Subdivision surfaces are proven to be a powerful tool in geometric modeling and computer graphics, due to the great flexibility they offer in capturing irregular topologies. This paper discusses the robust and efficient implementation of an isogeometric discretization approach to partial differential equations on surfaces using subdivision methodology. Elliptic equations with the Laplace-Beltrami and the surface bi-Laplacian operator as well as the associated eigenvalue problems are considered. Thereby, efficiency relies on the proper choice of a numerical quadrature scheme which preserves the expected higher order consistency. A particular emphasis is on the robustness of the approach in the vicinity of extraordinary vertices. In this paper, the focus is on Loop's subdivision scheme on triangular meshes. Based on a series of numerical experiments, different quadrature schemes are compared and a mid-edge quadrature, which is easy-to-implement via lookup tables, turns out to be a preferable choice due to its robustness and efficiency.

Branching can be observed at the austenite-martensite interface of martensitic phase transformations. For a model problem, Kohn and Müller studied a branching pattern with optimal scaling of the energy with respect to its parameters. Here, we present finite element simulations that suggest a topologically different class of branching patterns and derive a novel, low dimensional family of patterns. After a geometric optimization within this family, the resulting pattern bears a striking resemblance to our simulation. The novel microstructure admits the same scaling exponents but results in a significantly lower upper energy bound.

Image Extrapolation for the Time Discrete Metamorphosis Model - Existence and ApplicationsAlexander Effland, Martin Rumpf, Florian Schäfer
The space of images can be equipped with a Riemannian metric measuring both the cost of transport of image intensities and the variation of image intensities along motion lines. The resulting metamorphosis model was introduced and analyzed by Trouvé and Younes, and a variational time discretization for the geodesic interpolation was proposed by Berkels et al. In this paper, this time discrete model is expanded and an image extrapolation via a discrete exponential map is consistently derived for the variational time discretization. For a given weakly differentiable initial image and an initial image variation, the exponential map allows to compute a discrete geodesic extrapolation path in the space of images. It is shown that a time step of this shooting method can be formulated in the associated deformations only. For sufficiently small time steps local existence and uniqueness are proved using a suitable fixed point formulation and the implicit function theorem. A spatial Galerkin discretization with cubic splines on coarse meshes for the deformation and piecewise bilinear finite elements on fine meshes for the image intensities are used to derive a fully practical algorithm. Different applications underline the efficiency and stability of the proposed approach.

We present a generalized optimal transport model in which the mass-preserving constraint for the $L^2$-Wasserstein distance is relaxed by introducing a source term in the continuity equation. The source term is also incorporated in the path energy by means of its squared $L^2$-norm in time of a functional with linear growth in space. This extension of the original transport model enables local density modulation, which is a desirable feature in applications such as image warping and blending. A key advantage of the use of a functional with linear growth in space is that it allows for singular sources and sinks, which can be supported on points or lines. On a technical level, the $L^2$-norm in time ensures a disintegration of the source in time, which we use to obtain the well-posedness of the model and the existence of geodesic paths. Furthermore, a numerical scheme based on the proximal splitting approach (Papadakis et al., 2014) is presented. We compare our model with the corresponding model involving the $L^2(L^2)$-norm of the source, which merges the metamorphosis approach and the optimal transport approaches in imaging. Selected numerical test cases show strikingly different behaviour.

Convergent autoencoder approximation of low bending and low distortion manifold embeddingsJuliane Braunsmann, Marko Rajković, Martin Rumpf et al.
Autoencoders, which consist of an encoder and a decoder, are widely used in machine learning for dimension reduction of high-dimensional data. The encoder embeds the input data manifold into a lower-dimensional latent space, while the decoder represents the inverse map, providing a parametrization of the data manifold by the manifold in latent space. A good regularity and structure of the embedded manifold may substantially simplify further data processing tasks such as cluster analysis or data interpolation. We propose and analyze a novel regularization for learning the encoder component of an autoencoder: a loss functional that prefers isometric, extrinsically flat embeddings and allows to train the encoder on its own. To perform the training it is assumed that for pairs of nearby points on the input manifold their local Riemannian distance and their local Riemannian average can be evaluated. The loss functional is computed via Monte Carlo integration with different sampling strategies for pairs of points on the input manifold. Our main theorem identifies a geometric loss functional of the embedding map as the $Γ$-limit of the sampling-dependent loss functionals. Numerical tests, using image data that encodes different explicitly given data manifolds, show that smooth manifold embeddings into latent space are obtained. Due to the promotion of extrinsic flatness, these embeddings are regular enough such that interpolation between not too distant points on the manifold is well approximated by linear interpolation in latent space as one possible postprocessing.

Magnetic-shape-memory materials (e.g. specific NiMnGa alloys) react with a large change of shape to the presence of an external magnetic field. As an alternative for the difficult to manifacture single crystal of these alloys we study composite materials in which small magnetic-shape-memory particles are embedded in a polymer matrix. The macroscopic properties of the composite depend strongly on the geometry of the microstructure and on the characteristics of the particles and the polymer. We present a variational model based on micromagnetism and elasticity, and derive via homogenization an effective macroscopic model under the assumption that the microstructure is periodic. We then study numerically the resulting cell problem, and discuss the effect of the microstructure on the macroscopic material behavior. Our results may be used to optimize the shape of the particles and the microstructure.

A posteriori error estimates are derived in the context of two-dimensional structural elastic shape optimization under the compliance objective. It is known that the optimal shape features are microstructures that can be constructed using sequential lamination. The descriptive parameters explicitly depend on the stress. To derive error estimates the dual weighted residual approach for control problems in PDE constrained optimization is employed, involving the elastic solution and the microstructure parameters. Rigorous estimation of interpolation errors ensures robustness of the estimates while local approximations are used to obtain fully practical error indicators. Numerical results show sharply resolved interfaces between regions of full and intermediate material density.

A posteriori modeling error estimates in the optimization of two-scale elastic composite materialsSergio Conti, Benedict Geihe, Martin Lenz et al.
The a posteriori analysis of the discretization error and the modeling error is studied for a compliance cost functional in the context of the optimization of composite elastic materials and a two-scale linearized elasticity model. A mechanically simple, parametrized microscopic supporting structure is chosen and the parameters describing the structure are determined minimizing the compliance objective. An a posteriori error estimate is derived which includes the modeling error caused by the replacement of a nested laminate microstructure by this considerably simpler microstructure. Indeed, nested laminates are known to realize the minimal compliance and provide a benchmark for the quality of the microstructures. To estimate the local difference in the compliance functional the dual weighted residual approach is used. Different numerical experiments show that the resulting adaptive scheme leads to simple parametrized microscopic supporting structures that can compete with the optimal nested laminate construction. The derived a posteriori error indicators allow to verify that the suggested simplified microstructures achieve the optimal value of the compliance up to a few percent. Furthermore, it is shown how discretization error and modeling error can be balanced by choosing an optimal level of grid refinement. Our two scale results with a single scale microstructure can provide guidance towards the design of a producible macroscopic fine scale pattern.

Parametrizing Product Shape Manifolds by Composite NetworksJosua Sassen, Klaus Hildebrandt, Martin Rumpf et al.
Parametrizations of data manifolds in shape spaces can be computed using the rich toolbox of Riemannian geometry. This, however, often comes with high computational costs, which raises the question if one can learn an efficient neural network approximation. We show that this is indeed possible for shape spaces with a special product structure, namely those smoothly approximable by a direct sum of low-dimensional manifolds. Our proposed architecture leverages this structure by separately learning approximations for the low-dimensional factors and a subsequent combination. After developing the approach as a general framework, we apply it to a shape space of triangular surfaces. Here, typical examples of data manifolds are given through datasets of articulated models and can be factorized, for example, by a Sparse Principal Geodesic Analysis (SPGA). We demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed approach with experiments on synthetic data as well as manifolds extracted from data via SPGA.

Branching Structures in Elastic Shape OptimizationNora Lüthen, Martin Rumpf, Sascha Tölkes et al.
Fine scale elastic structures are widespread in nature, for instances in plants or bones, whenever stiffness and low weight are required. These patterns frequently refine towards a Dirichlet boundary to ensure an effective load transfer. The paper discusses the optimization of such supporting structures in a specific class of domain patterns in 2D, which composes of periodic and branching period transitions on subdomain facets. These investigations can be considered as a case study to display examples of optimal branching domain patterns. In explicit, a rectangular domain is decomposed into rectangular subdomains, which share facets with neighbouring subdomains or with facets which split on one side into equally sized facets of two different subdomains. On each subdomain one considers an elastic material phase with stiff elasticity coefficients and an approximate void phase with orders of magnitude softer material. For given load on the outer domain boundary, which is distributed on a prescribed fine scale pattern representing the contact area of the shape, the interior elastic phase is optimized with respect to the compliance cost. The elastic stress is supposed to be continuous on the domain and a stress based finite volume discretization is used for the optimization. If in one direction equally sized subdomains with equal adjacent subdomain topology line up, these subdomains are consider as equal copies including the enforced boundary conditions for the stress and form a locally periodic substructure. An alternating descent algorithm is employed for a discrete characteristic function describing the stiff elastic subset on the subdomains and the solution of the elastic state equation. Numerical experiments are shown for compression and shear load on the boundary of a quadratic domain.

Medial Axis Aware Learning of Signed Distance FunctionsSamuel Weidemaier, Christoph Norden-Smoch, Martin Rumpf
We propose a novel variational method to compute a highly accurate global signed distance function (SDF) to a given point cloud. To this end, the jump set of the gradient of the SDF, which coincides with the medial axis of the surface, is explicitly taken into account through a higher-order variational formulation that enforces linear growth along the gradient direction away from this discontinuity set. The eikonal equation and the zero-level set of the SDF are enforced as constraints. To make this variational problem computationally tractable, a phase field approximation of Ambrosio-Tortorelli type is employed. The associated phase field function implicitly describes the medial axis. The method is implemented for surfaces represented by unoriented point clouds using neural network approximations of both the SDF and the phase field. Experiments demonstrate the method's accuracy both in the near field and globally. Quantitative and qualitative comparisons with other approaches show the advantages of the proposed method.

Geodesic Calculus on Latent SpacesFlorine Hartwig, Josua Sassen, Juliane Braunsmann et al.
Latent manifolds of autoencoders provide low-dimensional representations of data, which can be studied from a geometric perspective. We propose to describe these latent manifolds as implicit submanifolds of some ambient latent space. Based on this, we develop tools for a discrete Riemannian calculus approximating classical geometric operators. These tools are robust against inaccuracies of the implicit representation often occurring in practical examples. To obtain a suitable implicit representation, we propose to learn an approximate projection onto the latent manifold by minimizing a denoising objective. This approach is independent of the underlying autoencoder and supports the use of different Riemannian geometries on the latent manifolds. The framework in particular enables the computation of geodesic paths connecting given end points and shooting geodesics via the Riemannian exponential maps on latent manifolds. We evaluate our approach on various autoencoders trained on synthetic and real data.

SDFs from Unoriented Point Clouds using Neural Variational Heat DistancesSamuel Weidemaier, Florine Hartwig, Josua Sassen et al.
We propose a novel variational approach for computing neural Signed Distance Fields (SDF) from unoriented point clouds. To this end, we replace the commonly used eikonal equation with the heat method, carrying over to the neural domain what has long been standard practice for computing distances on discrete surfaces. This yields two convex optimization problems for whose solution we employ neural networks: We first compute a neural approximation of the gradients of the unsigned distance field through a small time step of heat flow with weighted point cloud densities as initial data. Then we use it to compute a neural approximation of the SDF. We prove that the underlying variational problems are well-posed. Through numerical experiments, we demonstrate that our method provides state-of-the-art surface reconstruction and consistent SDF gradients. Furthermore, we show in a proof-of-concept that it is accurate enough for solving a PDE on the zero-level set.

Autoencoders are a widespread tool in machine learning to transform high-dimensional data into a lowerdimensional representation which still exhibits the essential characteristics of the input. The encoder provides an embedding from the input data manifold into a latent space which may then be used for further processing. For instance, learning interpolation on the manifold may be simplified via the new manifold representation in latent space. The efficiency of such further processing heavily depends on the regularity and structure of the embedding. In this article, the embedding into latent space is regularized via a loss function that promotes an as isometric and as flat embedding as possible. The required training data comprises pairs of nearby points on the input manifold together with their local distance and their local Frechet average. This regularity loss functional even allows to train the encoder on its own. The loss functional is computed via a Monte Carlo integration which is shown to be consistent with a geometric loss functional defined directly on the embedding map. Numerical tests are performed using image data that encodes different data manifolds. The results show that smooth manifold embeddings in latent space are obtained. These embeddings are regular enough such that interpolation between not too distant points on the manifold is well approximated by linear interpolation in latent space.

Simultaneous elastic shape optimization for a domain splitting in bone tissue engineeringPatrick Dondl, Patrina S. P. Poh, Martin Rumpf et al.
This paper deals with the simulateneous optimization of a subset $\mathcal{O}_0$ of some domain $Ω$ and its complement $\mathcal{O}_1 = Ω\setminus \overline{\mathcal{O}}_0$ both considered as separate elastic objects subject to a set of loading scenarios. If one asks for a configuration which minimizes the maximal elastic cost functional both phases compete for space since elastic shapes usually get mechanically more stable when being enlarged. Such a problem arises in biomechanics where a bioresorbable polymer scaffold is implanted in place of lost bone tissue and in a regeneration phase new bone tissue grows in the scaffold complement via osteogenesis. In fact, the polymer scaffold should be mechanically stable to bear loading in the early stage regeneration phase and at the same time the new bone tissue grown in the complement of this scaffold should as well bear the loading. Here, this optimal subdomain splitting problem with appropriate elastic cost functionals is introduced and existence of optimal two phase configurations is established for a regularized formulation. Furthermore, based on a phase field approximation a finite element discretization is derived. Numerical experiments are presented for the design of optimal periodic scaffold microstructure.

Computation of Optimal Transport on Discrete Metric Measure SpacesMatthias Erbar, Martin Rumpf, Bernhard Schmitzer et al.
In this paper we investigate the numerical approximation of an analogue of the Wasserstein distance for optimal transport on graphs that is defined via a discrete modification of the Benamou--Brenier formula. This approach involves the logarithmic mean of measure densities on adjacent nodes of the graph. For this model a variational time discretization of the probability densities on graph nodes and the momenta on graph edges is proposed. A robust descent algorithm for the action functional is derived, which in particular uses a proximal splitting with an edgewise nonlinear projection on the convex subgraph of the logarithmic mean. Thereby, suitable chosen slack variables avoid a global coupling of probability densities on all graph nodes in the projection step. For the time discrete action functional $Γ$--convergence to the time continuous action is established. Numerical results for a selection of test cases show qualitative and quantitative properties of the optimal transport on graphs. Finally, we use our algorithm to implement a JKO scheme for the gradient flow of the entropy in the discrete transportation distance, which is known to coincide with the underlying Markov semigroup, and test our results against a classical backward Euler discretization of this discrete heat flow.

Time Discrete Geodesic Paths in the Space of ImagesBenjamin Berkels, Alexander Effland, Martin Rumpf
In this paper the space of images is considered as a Riemannian manifold using the metamorphosis approach, where the underlying Riemannian metric simultaneously measures the cost of image transport and intensity variation. A robust and effective variational time discretization of geodesics paths is proposed. This requires to minimize a discrete path energy consisting of a sum of consecutive image matching functionals over a set of image intensity maps and pairwise matching deformations. For square-integrable input images the existence of discrete, connecting geodesic paths defined as minimizers of this variational problem is shown. Furthermore, $Γ$-convergence of the underlying discrete path energy to the continuous path energy is proved. This includes a diffeomorphism property for the induced transport and the existence of a square-integrable weak material derivative in space and time. A spatial discretization via finite elements combined with an alternating descent scheme in the set of image intensity maps and the set of matching deformations is presented to approximate discrete geodesic paths numerically. Computational results underline the efficiency of the proposed approach and demonstrate important qualitative properties.

A Posteriori Error Control for the Binary Mumford-Shah ModelBenjamin Berkels, Alexander Effland, Martin Rumpf
The binary Mumford-Shah model is a widespread tool for image segmentation and can be considered as a basic model in shape optimization with a broad range of applications in computer vision, ranging from basic segmentation and labeling to object reconstruction. This paper presents robust a posteriori error estimates for a natural error quantity, namely the area of the non properly segmented region. To this end, a suitable strictly convex and non-constrained relaxation of the originally non-convex functional is investigated and Repin's functional approach for a posteriori error estimation is used to control the numerical error for the relaxed problem in the $L^2$-norm. In combination with a suitable cut out argument, a fully practical estimate for the area mismatch is derived. This estimate is incorporated in an adaptive meshing strategy. Two different adaptive primal-dual finite element schemes, and the most frequently used finite difference discretization are investigated and compared. Numerical experiments show qualitative and quantitative properties of the estimates and demonstrate their usefulness in practical applications.

In this paper the optimal transport and the metamorphosis perspectives are combined. For a pair of given input images geodesic paths in the space of images are defined as minimizers of a resulting path energy. To this end, the underlying Riemannian metric measures the rate of transport cost and the rate of viscous dissipation. Furthermore, the model is capable to deal with strongly varying image contrast and explicitly allows for sources and sinks in the transport equations which are incorporated in the metric related to the metamorphosis approach by Trouvé and Younes. In the non-viscous case with source term existence of geodesic paths is proven in the space of measures. The proposed model is explored on the range from merely optimal transport to strongly dissipative dynamics. For this model a robust and effective variational time discretization of geodesic paths is proposed. This requires to minimize a discrete path energy consisting of a sum of consecutive image matching functionals. These functionals are defined on corresponding pairs of intensity functions and on associated pairwise matching deformations. Existence of time discrete geodesics is demonstrated. Furthermore, a finite element implementation is proposed and applied to instructive test cases and to real images. In the non-viscous case this is compared to the algorithm proposed by Benamou and Brenier including a discretization of the source term. Finally, the model is generalized to define discrete weighted barycentres with applications to textures and objects.

A $BV$ Functional and its Relaxation for Joint Motion Estimation and Image Sequence RecoverySergio Conti, Janusz Ginster, Martin Rumpf
The estimation of motion in an image sequence is a fundamental task in image processing. Frequently, the image sequence is corrupted by noise and one simultaneously asks for the underlying motion field and a restored sequence. In smoothly shaded regions of the restored image sequence the brightness constancy assumption along motion paths leads to a pointwise differential condition on the motion field. At object boundaries which are edge discontinuities both for the image intensity and for the motion field this condition is no longer well defined. In this paper a total-variation type functional is discussed for joint image restoration and motion estimation. This functional turns out not to be lower semicontinuous, and in particular fine-scale oscillations may appear around edges. By the general theory of vector valued $BV$ functionals its relaxation leads to the appearance of a singular part of the energy density, which can be determined by the solution of a local minimization problem at edges. Based on bounds for the singular part of the energy and under appropriate assumptions on the local intensity variation one can exclude the existence of microstructures and obtain a model well-suited for simultaneous image restoration and motion estimation. Indeed, the relaxed model incorporates a generalized variational formulation of the brightness constancy assumption. The analytical findings are related to ambiguity problems in motion estimation such as the proper distinction between foreground and background motion at object edges.

A Nested Variational Time Discretization for Parametric Anisotropic Willmore FlowRicardo Perl, Paola Pozzi, Martin Rumpf
A variational time discretization of anisotropic Willmore flow combined with a spatial discretization via piecewise affine finite elements is presented. Here, both the energy and the metric underlying the gradient flow are anisotropic, which in particular ensures that Wulff shapes are invariant up to scaling under the gradient flow. In each time step of the gradient flow a nested optimization problem has to be solved. Thereby, an outer variational problem reflects the time discretization of the actual Willmore flow and involves an approximate anisotropic $L^2$-distance between two consecutive time steps and a fully implicit approximation of the anisotropic Willmore energy. The anisotropic mean curvature needed to evaluate the energy integrand is replaced by the time discrete, approximate speed from an inner, fully implicit variational scheme for anisotropic mean curvature motion. To solve the nested optimization problem a Newton method for the associated Lagrangian is applied. Computational results for the evolution of curves underline the robustness of the new scheme, in particular with respect to large time steps.

Cortical Surface Co-Registration based on MRI Images and PhotosBenjamin Berkels, Ivan Cabrilo, Sven Haller et al.
Brain shift, i.e. the change in configuration of the brain after opening the dura mater, is a key problem in neuronavigation. We present an approach to co-register intra-operative microscope images with pre-operative MRI to adapt and optimize intra-operative neuronavigation. The tools are a robust classification of sulci on MRI extracted cortical surfaces, guided user marking of most prominent sulci on a microscope image, and the actual variational registration method with a fidelity energy for 3D deformations of the cortical surface combined with a higher order, linear elastica type prior energy. Furthermore, the actual registration is validated on an artificial testbed with known ground truth deformation and on real data of a neuro clinical patient.

Discrete geodesic calculus in the space of viscous fluidic objectsMartin Rumpf, Benedikt Wirth
Based on a local approximation of the Riemannian distance on a manifold by a computationally cheap dissimilarity measure, a time discrete geodesic calculus is developed, and applications to shape space are explored. The dissimilarity measure is derived from a deformation energy whose Hessian reproduces the underlying Riemannian metric, and it is used to define length and energy of discrete paths in shape space. The notion of discrete geodesics defined as energy minimizing paths gives rise to a discrete logarithmic map, a variational definition of a discrete exponential map, and a time discrete parallel transport. This new concept is applied to a shape space in which shapes are considered as boundary contours of physical objects consisting of viscous material. The flexibility and computational efficiency of the approach is demonstrated for topology preserving shape morphing, the representation of paths in shape space via local shape variations as path generators, shape extrapolation via discrete geodesic flow, and the transfer of geometric features.
