PNVC: Towards Practical INR-based Video Compression

Ge Gao, Ho Man Kwan, Fan Zhang et al.

Neural video compression has recently demonstrated significant potential to compete with conventional video codecs in terms of rate-quality performance. These learned video codecs are however associated with various issues related to decoding complexity (for autoencoder-based methods) and/or system delays (for implicit neural representation (INR) based models), which currently prevent them from being deployed in practical applications. In this paper, targeting a practical neural video codec, we propose a novel INR-based coding framework, PNVC, which innovatively combines autoencoder-based and overfitted solutions. Our approach benefits from several design innovations, including a new structural reparameterization-based architecture, hierarchical quality control, modulation-based entropy modeling, and scale-aware positional embedding. Supporting both low delay (LD) and random access (RA) configurations, PNVC outperforms existing INR-based codecs, achieving nearly 35%+ BD-rate savings against HEVC HM 18.0 (LD) - almost 10% more compared to one of the state-of-the-art INR-based codecs, HiNeRV and 5% more over VTM 20.0 (LD), while maintaining 20+ FPS decoding speeds for 1080p content. This represents an important step forward for INR-based video coding, moving it towards practical deployment. The source code will be available for public evaluation.

Efficient Self-supervised Continual Learning with Progressive Task-correlated Layer Freezing

Li Yang, Sen Lin, Fan Zhang et al.

Inspired by the success of Self-supervised learning (SSL) in learning visual representations from unlabeled data, a few recent works have studied SSL in the context of continual learning (CL), where multiple tasks are learned sequentially, giving rise to a new paradigm, namely self-supervised continual learning (SSCL). It has been shown that the SSCL outperforms supervised continual learning (SCL) as the learned representations are more informative and robust to catastrophic forgetting. However, if not designed intelligently, the training complexity of SSCL may be prohibitively high due to the inherent training cost of SSL. In this work, by investigating the task correlations in SSCL setup first, we discover an interesting phenomenon that, with the SSL-learned background model, the intermediate features are highly correlated between tasks. Based on this new finding, we propose a new SSCL method with layer-wise freezing which progressively freezes partial layers with the highest correlation ratios for each task to improve training computation efficiency and memory efficiency. Extensive experiments across multiple datasets are performed, where our proposed method shows superior performance against the SoTA SSCL methods under various SSL frameworks. For example, compared to LUMP, our method achieves 12\%/14\%/12\% GPU training time reduction, 23\%/26\%/24\% memory reduction, 35\%/34\%/33\% backward FLOPs reduction, and 1.31\%/1.98\%/1.21\% forgetting reduction without accuracy degradation on three datasets, respectively.

SEMC: Structure-Enhanced Mixture-of-Experts Contrastive Learning for Ultrasound Standard Plane Recognition

Qing Cai, Guihao Yan, Fan Zhang et al.

Ultrasound standard plane recognition is essential for clinical tasks such as disease screening, organ evaluation, and biometric measurement. However, existing methods fail to effectively exploit shallow structural information and struggle to capture fine-grained semantic differences through contrastive samples generated by image augmentations, ultimately resulting in suboptimal recognition of both structural and discriminative details in ultrasound standard planes. To address these issues, we propose SEMC, a novel Structure-Enhanced Mixture-of-Experts Contrastive learning framework that combines structure-aware feature fusion with expert-guided contrastive learning. Specifically, we first introduce a novel Semantic-Structure Fusion Module (SSFM) to exploit multi-scale structural information and enhance the model's ability to perceive fine-grained structural details by effectively aligning shallow and deep features. Then, a novel Mixture-of-Experts Contrastive Recognition Module (MCRM) is designed to perform hierarchical contrastive learning and classification across multi-level features using a mixture-of-experts (MoE) mechanism, further improving class separability and recognition performance. More importantly, we also curate a large-scale and meticulously annotated liver ultrasound dataset containing six standard planes. Extensive experimental results on our in-house dataset and two public datasets demonstrate that SEMC outperforms recent state-of-the-art methods across various metrics.
