Industrial Style Transfer with Large-scale Geometric Warping and Content Preservation

Jinchao Yang, Fei Guo, Shuo Chen et al.

We propose a novel style transfer method to quickly create a new visual product with a nice appearance for industrial designers' reference. Given a source product, a target product, and an art style image, our method produces a neural warping field that warps the source shape to imitate the geometric style of the target and a neural texture transformation network that transfers the artistic style to the warped source product. Our model, Industrial Style Transfer (InST), consists of large-scale geometric warping (LGW) and interest-consistency texture transfer (ICTT). LGW aims to explore an unsupervised transformation between the shape masks of the source and target products for fitting large-scale shape warping. Furthermore, we introduce a mask smoothness regularization term to prevent the abrupt changes of the details of the source product. ICTT introduces an interest regularization term to maintain important contents of the warped product when it is stylized by using the art style image. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that InST achieves state-of-the-art performance on multiple visual product design tasks, e.g., companies' snail logos and classical bottles (please see Fig. 1). To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to extend the neural style transfer method to create industrial product appearances. Project page: \ulr{https://jcyang98.github.io/InST/home.html}. Atom-Motif Contrastive Transformer for Molecular Property Prediction

Wentao Yu, Shuo Chen, Chen Gong et al.

Recently, Graph Transformer (GT) models have been widely used in the task of Molecular Property Prediction (MPP) due to their high reliability in characterizing the latent relationship among graph nodes (i.e., the atoms in a molecule). However, most existing GT-based methods usually explore the basic interactions between pairwise atoms, and thus they fail to consider the important interactions among critical motifs (e.g., functional groups consisted of several atoms) of molecules. As motifs in a molecule are significant patterns that are of great importance for determining molecular properties (e.g., toxicity and solubility), overlooking motif interactions inevitably hinders the effectiveness of MPP. To address this issue, we propose a novel Atom-Motif Contrastive Transformer (AMCT), which not only explores the atom-level interactions but also considers the motif-level interactions. Since the representations of atoms and motifs for a given molecule are actually two different views of the same instance, they are naturally aligned to generate the self-supervisory signals for model training. Meanwhile, the same motif can exist in different molecules, and hence we also employ the contrastive loss to maximize the representation agreement of identical motifs across different molecules. Finally, in order to clearly identify the motifs that are critical in deciding the properties of each molecule, we further construct a property-aware attention mechanism into our learning framework. Our proposed AMCT is extensively evaluated on seven popular benchmark datasets, and both quantitative and qualitative results firmly demonstrate its effectiveness when compared with the state-of-the-art methods.

R2-MLP: Round-Roll MLP for Multi-View 3D Object Recognition

Shuo Chen, Tan Yu, Ping Li

Recently, vision architectures based exclusively on multi-layer perceptrons (MLPs) have gained much attention in the computer vision community. MLP-like models achieve competitive performance on a single 2D image classification with less inductive bias without hand-crafted convolution layers. In this work, we explore the effectiveness of MLP-based architecture for the view-based 3D object recognition task. We present an MLP-based architecture termed as Round-Roll MLP (R$^2$-MLP). It extends the spatial-shift MLP backbone by considering the communications between patches from different views. R$^2$-MLP rolls part of the channels along the view dimension and promotes information exchange between neighboring views. We benchmark MLP results on ModelNet10 and ModelNet40 datasets with ablations in various aspects. The experimental results show that, with a conceptually simple structure, our R$^2$-MLP achieves competitive performance compared with existing state-of-the-art methods.

Nuclear Deployed: Analyzing Catastrophic Risks in Decision-making of Autonomous LLM Agents

Rongwu Xu, Xiaojian Li, Shuo Chen et al. · uw

Large language models (LLMs) are evolving into autonomous decision-makers, raising concerns about catastrophic risks in high-stakes scenarios, particularly in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) domains. Based on the insight that such risks can originate from trade-offs between the agent's Helpful, Harmlessness and Honest (HHH) goals, we build a novel three-stage evaluation framework, which is carefully constructed to effectively and naturally expose such risks. We conduct 14,400 agentic simulations across 12 advanced LLMs, with extensive experiments and analysis. Results reveal that LLM agents can autonomously engage in catastrophic behaviors and deception, without being deliberately induced. Furthermore, stronger reasoning abilities often increase, rather than mitigate, these risks. We also show that these agents can violate instructions and superior commands. On the whole, we empirically prove the existence of catastrophic risks in autonomous LLM agents. We release our code to foster further research.

Stop Reasoning! When Multimodal LLM with Chain-of-Thought Reasoning Meets Adversarial Image

Zefeng Wang, Zhen Han, Shuo Chen et al. · deepmind, oxford

Multimodal LLMs (MLLMs) with a great ability of text and image understanding have received great attention. To achieve better reasoning with MLLMs, Chain-of-Thought (CoT) reasoning has been widely explored, which further promotes MLLMs' explainability by giving intermediate reasoning steps. Despite the strong power demonstrated by MLLMs in multimodal reasoning, recent studies show that MLLMs still suffer from adversarial images. This raises the following open questions: Does CoT also enhance the adversarial robustness of MLLMs? What do the intermediate reasoning steps of CoT entail under adversarial attacks? To answer these questions, we first generalize existing attacks to CoT-based inferences by attacking the two main components, i.e., rationale and answer. We find that CoT indeed improves MLLMs' adversarial robustness against the existing attack methods by leveraging the multi-step reasoning process, but not substantially. Based on our findings, we further propose a novel attack method, termed as stop-reasoning attack, that attacks the model while bypassing the CoT reasoning process. Experiments on three MLLMs and two visual reasoning datasets verify the effectiveness of our proposed method. We show that stop-reasoning attack can result in misled predictions and outperform baseline attacks by a significant margin.

Remote Photoplethysmography in Real-World and Extreme Lighting Scenarios

Hang Shao, Lei Luo, Jianjun Qian et al.

Physiological activities can be manifested by the sensitive changes in facial imaging. While they are barely observable to our eyes, computer vision manners can, and the derived remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) has shown considerable promise. However, existing studies mainly rely on spatial skin recognition and temporal rhythmic interactions, so they focus on identifying explicit features under ideal light conditions, but perform poorly in-the-wild with intricate obstacles and extreme illumination exposure. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end video transformer model for rPPG. It strives to eliminate complex and unknown external time-varying interferences, whether they are sufficient to occupy subtle biosignal amplitudes or exist as periodic perturbations that hinder network training. In the specific implementation, we utilize global interference sharing, subject background reference, and self-supervised disentanglement to eliminate interference, and further guide learning based on spatiotemporal filtering, reconstruction guidance, and frequency domain and biological prior constraints to achieve effective rPPG. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first robust rPPG model for real outdoor scenarios based on natural face videos, and is lightweight to deploy. Extensive experiments show the competitiveness and performance of our model in rPPG prediction across datasets and scenes.

MVT: Multi-view Vision Transformer for 3D Object Recognition

Shuo Chen, Tan Yu, Ping Li

Inspired by the great success achieved by CNN in image recognition, view-based methods applied CNNs to model the projected views for 3D object understanding and achieved excellent performance. Nevertheless, multi-view CNN models cannot model the communications between patches from different views, limiting its effectiveness in 3D object recognition. Inspired by the recent success gained by vision Transformer in image recognition, we propose a Multi-view Vision Transformer (MVT) for 3D object recognition. Since each patch feature in a Transformer block has a global reception field, it naturally achieves communications between patches from different views. Meanwhile, it takes much less inductive bias compared with its CNN counterparts. Considering both effectiveness and efficiency, we develop a global-local structure for our MVT. Our experiments on two public benchmarks, ModelNet40 and ModelNet10, demonstrate the competitive performance of our MVT.
