EmoTalk3D: High-Fidelity Free-View Synthesis of Emotional 3D Talking HeadQianyun He, Xinya Ji, Yicheng Gong et al.
We present a novel approach for synthesizing 3D talking heads with controllable emotion, featuring enhanced lip synchronization and rendering quality. Despite significant progress in the field, prior methods still suffer from multi-view consistency and a lack of emotional expressiveness. To address these issues, we collect EmoTalk3D dataset with calibrated multi-view videos, emotional annotations, and per-frame 3D geometry. By training on the EmoTalk3D dataset, we propose a \textit{`Speech-to-Geometry-to-Appearance'} mapping framework that first predicts faithful 3D geometry sequence from the audio features, then the appearance of a 3D talking head represented by 4D Gaussians is synthesized from the predicted geometry. The appearance is further disentangled into canonical and dynamic Gaussians, learned from multi-view videos, and fused to render free-view talking head animation. Moreover, our model enables controllable emotion in the generated talking heads and can be rendered in wide-range views. Our method exhibits improved rendering quality and stability in lip motion generation while capturing dynamic facial details such as wrinkles and subtle expressions. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in generating high-fidelity and emotion-controllable 3D talking heads. Fine-grained Text-Video Retrieval with Frozen Image EncodersZuozhuo Dai, Fangtao Shao, Qingkun Su et al.
State-of-the-art text-video retrieval (TVR) methods typically utilize CLIP and cosine similarity for efficient retrieval. Meanwhile, cross attention methods, which employ a transformer decoder to compute attention between each text query and all frames in a video, offer a more comprehensive interaction between text and videos. However, these methods lack important fine-grained spatial information as they directly compute attention between text and video-level tokens. To address this issue, we propose CrossTVR, a two-stage text-video retrieval architecture. In the first stage, we leverage existing TVR methods with cosine similarity network for efficient text/video candidate selection. In the second stage, we propose a novel decoupled video text cross attention module to capture fine-grained multimodal information in spatial and temporal dimensions. Additionally, we employ the frozen CLIP model strategy in fine-grained retrieval, enabling scalability to larger pre-trained vision models like ViT-G, resulting in improved retrieval performance. Experiments on text video retrieval datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and scalability of our proposed CrossTVR compared to state-of-the-art approaches.

AlphaFolding: 4D Diffusion for Dynamic Protein Structure Prediction with Reference and Motion GuidanceKaihui Cheng, Ce Liu, Qingkun Su et al.
Protein structure prediction is pivotal for understanding the structure-function relationship of proteins, advancing biological research, and facilitating pharmaceutical development and experimental design. While deep learning methods and the expanded availability of experimental 3D protein structures have accelerated structure prediction, the dynamic nature of protein structures has received limited attention. This study introduces an innovative 4D diffusion model incorporating molecular dynamics (MD) simulation data to learn dynamic protein structures. Our approach is distinguished by the following components: (1) a unified diffusion model capable of generating dynamic protein structures, including both the backbone and side chains, utilizing atomic grouping and side-chain dihedral angle predictions; (2) a reference network that enhances structural consistency by integrating the latent embeddings of the initial 3D protein structures; and (3) a motion alignment module aimed at improving temporal structural coherence across multiple time steps. To our knowledge, this is the first diffusion-based model aimed at predicting protein trajectories across multiple time steps simultaneously. Validation on benchmark datasets demonstrates that our model exhibits high accuracy in predicting dynamic 3D structures of proteins containing up to 256 amino acids over 32 time steps, effectively capturing both local flexibility in stable states and significant conformational changes. Champ: Controllable and Consistent Human Image Animation with 3D Parametric GuidanceShenhao Zhu, Junming Leo Chen, Zuozhuo Dai et al.
In this study, we introduce a methodology for human image animation by leveraging a 3D human parametric model within a latent diffusion framework to enhance shape alignment and motion guidance in curernt human generative techniques. The methodology utilizes the SMPL(Skinned Multi-Person Linear) model as the 3D human parametric model to establish a unified representation of body shape and pose. This facilitates the accurate capture of intricate human geometry and motion characteristics from source videos. Specifically, we incorporate rendered depth images, normal maps, and semantic maps obtained from SMPL sequences, alongside skeleton-based motion guidance, to enrich the conditions to the latent diffusion model with comprehensive 3D shape and detailed pose attributes. A multi-layer motion fusion module, integrating self-attention mechanisms, is employed to fuse the shape and motion latent representations in the spatial domain. By representing the 3D human parametric model as the motion guidance, we can perform parametric shape alignment of the human body between the reference image and the source video motion. Experimental evaluations conducted on benchmark datasets demonstrate the methodology's superior ability to generate high-quality human animations that accurately capture both pose and shape variations. Furthermore, our approach also exhibits superior generalization capabilities on the proposed in-the-wild dataset. Project page: https://fudan-generative-vision.github.io/champ.
Pyramidal Patchification Flow for Visual GenerationHui Li, Baoyou Chen, Liwei Zhang et al.
Diffusion transformers (DiTs) adopt Patchify, mapping patch representations to token representations through linear projections, to adjust the number of tokens input to DiT blocks and thus the computation cost. Instead of a single patch size for all the timesteps, we introduce a Pyramidal Patchification Flow (PPFlow) approach: Large patch sizes are used for high noise timesteps and small patch sizes for low noise timesteps; Linear projections are learned for each patch size; and Unpatchify is accordingly modified. Unlike Pyramidal Flow, our approach operates over full latent representations other than pyramid representations, and adopts the normal denoising process without requiring the renoising trick. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach through two training manners. Training from scratch achieves a $1.6\times$ ($2.0\times$) inference speed over SiT-B/2 for 2-level (3-level) pyramid patchification with slightly lower training FLOPs and similar image generation performance. Training from pretrained normal DiTs achieves even better performance with small training time. The code and checkpoint are at https://github.com/fudan-generative-vision/PPFlow.
DicFace: Dirichlet-Constrained Variational Codebook Learning for Temporally Coherent Video Face RestorationYan Chen, Hanlin Shang, Ce Liu et al.
Video face restoration faces a critical challenge in maintaining temporal consistency while recovering fine facial details from degraded inputs. This paper presents a novel approach that extends Vector-Quantized Variational Autoencoders (VQ-VAEs), pretrained on static high-quality portraits, into a video restoration framework through variational latent space modeling. Our key innovation lies in reformulating discrete codebook representations as Dirichlet-distributed continuous variables, enabling probabilistic transitions between facial features across frames. A spatio-temporal Transformer architecture jointly models inter-frame dependencies and predicts latent distributions, while a Laplacian-constrained reconstruction loss combined with perceptual (LPIPS) regularization enhances both pixel accuracy and visual quality. Comprehensive evaluations on blind face restoration, video inpainting, and facial colorization tasks demonstrate state-of-the-art performance. This work establishes an effective paradigm for adapting intensive image priors, pretrained on high-quality images, to video restoration while addressing the critical challenge of flicker artifacts. CondLaneNet: a Top-to-down Lane Detection Framework Based on Conditional ConvolutionLizhe Liu, Xiaohao Chen, Siyu Zhu et al.
Modern deep-learning-based lane detection methods are successful in most scenarios but struggling for lane lines with complex topologies. In this work, we propose CondLaneNet, a novel top-to-down lane detection framework that detects the lane instances first and then dynamically predicts the line shape for each instance. Aiming to resolve lane instance-level discrimination problem, we introduce a conditional lane detection strategy based on conditional convolution and row-wise formulation. Further, we design the Recurrent Instance Module(RIM) to overcome the problem of detecting lane lines with complex topologies such as dense lines and fork lines. Benefit from the end-to-end pipeline which requires little post-process, our method has real-time efficiency. We extensively evaluate our method on three benchmarks of lane detection. Results show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance on all three benchmark datasets. Moreover, our method has the coexistence of accuracy and efficiency, e.g. a 78.14 F1 score and 220 FPS on CULane. Our code is available at https://github.com/aliyun/conditional-lane-detection.
Learning Camera Localization via Dense Scene MatchingShitao Tang, Chengzhou Tang, Rui Huang et al.
Camera localization aims to estimate 6 DoF camera poses from RGB images. Traditional methods detect and match interest points between a query image and a pre-built 3D model. Recent learning-based approaches encode scene structures into a specific convolutional neural network (CNN) and thus are able to predict dense coordinates from RGB images. However, most of them require re-training or re-adaption for a new scene and have difficulties in handling large-scale scenes due to limited network capacity. We present a new method for scene agnostic camera localization using dense scene matching (DSM), where a cost volume is constructed between a query image and a scene. The cost volume and the corresponding coordinates are processed by a CNN to predict dense coordinates. Camera poses can then be solved by PnP algorithms. In addition, our method can be extended to temporal domain, which leads to extra performance boost during testing time. Our scene-agnostic approach achieves comparable accuracy as the existing scene-specific approaches, such as KFNet, on the 7scenes and Cambridge benchmark. This approach also remarkably outperforms state-of-the-art scene-agnostic dense coordinate regression network SANet. The Code is available at https://github.com/Tangshitao/Dense-Scene-Matching.

MeshMVS: Multi-View Stereo Guided Mesh ReconstructionRakesh Shrestha, Zhiwen Fan, Qingkun Su et al.
Deep learning based 3D shape generation methods generally utilize latent features extracted from color images to encode the semantics of objects and guide the shape generation process. These color image semantics only implicitly encode 3D information, potentially limiting the accuracy of the generated shapes. In this paper we propose a multi-view mesh generation method which incorporates geometry information explicitly by using the features from intermediate depth representations of multi-view stereo and regularizing the 3D shapes against these depth images. First, our system predicts a coarse 3D volume from the color images by probabilistically merging voxel occupancy grids from the prediction of individual views. Then the depth images from multi-view stereo along with the rendered depth images of the coarse shape are used as a contrastive input whose features guide the refinement of the coarse shape through a series of graph convolution networks. Notably, we achieve superior results than state-of-the-art multi-view shape generation methods with 34% decrease in Chamfer distance to ground truth and 14% increase in F1-score on ShapeNet dataset. Our source code is available at https://git.io/Jmalg
A Neural Network for Detailed Human Depth Estimation from a Single ImageSicong Tang, Feitong Tan, Kelvin Cheng et al.
This paper presents a neural network to estimate a detailed depth map of the foreground human in a single RGB image. The result captures geometry details such as cloth wrinkles, which are important in visualization applications. To achieve this goal, we separate the depth map into a smooth base shape and a residual detail shape and design a network with two branches to regress them respectively. We design a training strategy to ensure both base and detail shapes can be faithfully learned by the corresponding network branches. Furthermore, we introduce a novel network layer to fuse a rough depth map and surface normals to further improve the final result. Quantitative comparison with fused `ground truth' captured by real depth cameras and qualitative examples on unconstrained Internet images demonstrate the strength of the proposed method. Matchable Image Retrieval by Learning from Surface ReconstructionTianwei Shen, Zixin Luo, Lei Zhou et al.
Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have achieved superior performance on object image retrieval, while Bag-of-Words (BoW) models with handcrafted local features still dominate the retrieval of overlapping images in 3D reconstruction. In this paper, we narrow down this gap by presenting an efficient CNN-based method to retrieve images with overlaps, which we refer to as the matchable image retrieval problem. Different from previous methods that generates training data based on sparse reconstruction, we create a large-scale image database with rich 3D geometrics and exploit information from surface reconstruction to obtain fine-grained training data. We propose a batched triplet-based loss function combined with mesh re-projection to effectively learn the CNN representation. The proposed method significantly accelerates the image retrieval process in 3D reconstruction and outperforms the state-of-the-art CNN-based and BoW methods for matchable image retrieval. Hallo3: Highly Dynamic and Realistic Portrait Image Animation with Video Diffusion TransformerJiahao Cui, Hui Li, Yun Zhan et al.
Existing methodologies for animating portrait images face significant challenges, particularly in handling non-frontal perspectives, rendering dynamic objects around the portrait, and generating immersive, realistic backgrounds. In this paper, we introduce the first application of a pretrained transformer-based video generative model that demonstrates strong generalization capabilities and generates highly dynamic, realistic videos for portrait animation, effectively addressing these challenges. The adoption of a new video backbone model makes previous U-Net-based methods for identity maintenance, audio conditioning, and video extrapolation inapplicable. To address this limitation, we design an identity reference network consisting of a causal 3D VAE combined with a stacked series of transformer layers, ensuring consistent facial identity across video sequences. Additionally, we investigate various speech audio conditioning and motion frame mechanisms to enable the generation of continuous video driven by speech audio. Our method is validated through experiments on benchmark and newly proposed wild datasets, demonstrating substantial improvements over prior methods in generating realistic portraits characterized by diverse orientations within dynamic and immersive scenes. VideoMV: Consistent Multi-View Generation Based on Large Video Generative ModelQi Zuo, Xiaodong Gu, Lingteng Qiu et al.
Generating multi-view images based on text or single-image prompts is a critical capability for the creation of 3D content. Two fundamental questions on this topic are what data we use for training and how to ensure multi-view consistency. This paper introduces a novel framework that makes fundamental contributions to both questions. Unlike leveraging images from 2D diffusion models for training, we propose a dense consistent multi-view generation model that is fine-tuned from off-the-shelf video generative models. Images from video generative models are more suitable for multi-view generation because the underlying network architecture that generates them employs a temporal module to enforce frame consistency. Moreover, the video data sets used to train these models are abundant and diverse, leading to a reduced train-finetuning domain gap. To enhance multi-view consistency, we introduce a 3D-Aware Denoising Sampling, which first employs a feed-forward reconstruction module to get an explicit global 3D model, and then adopts a sampling strategy that effectively involves images rendered from the global 3D model into the denoising sampling loop to improve the multi-view consistency of the final images. As a by-product, this module also provides a fast way to create 3D assets represented by 3D Gaussians within a few seconds. Our approach can generate 24 dense views and converges much faster in training than state-of-the-art approaches (4 GPU hours versus many thousand GPU hours) with comparable visual quality and consistency. By further fine-tuning, our approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art methods in both quantitative metrics and visual effects. Our project page is aigc3d.github.io/VideoMV.

Freditor: High-Fidelity and Transferable NeRF Editing by Frequency DecompositionYisheng He, Weihao Yuan, Siyu Zhu et al.
This paper enables high-fidelity, transferable NeRF editing by frequency decomposition. Recent NeRF editing pipelines lift 2D stylization results to 3D scenes while suffering from blurry results, and fail to capture detailed structures caused by the inconsistency between 2D editings. Our critical insight is that low-frequency components of images are more multiview-consistent after editing compared with their high-frequency parts. Moreover, the appearance style is mainly exhibited on the low-frequency components, and the content details especially reside in high-frequency parts. This motivates us to perform editing on low-frequency components, which results in high-fidelity edited scenes. In addition, the editing is performed in the low-frequency feature space, enabling stable intensity control and novel scene transfer. Comprehensive experiments conducted on photorealistic datasets demonstrate the superior performance of high-fidelity and transferable NeRF editing. PanoLAM: Large Avatar Model for Gaussian Full-Head Synthesis from One-shot Unposed ImagePeng Li, Yisheng He, Yingdong Hu et al.
We present a feed-forward framework for Gaussian full-head synthesis from a single unposed image. Unlike previous work that relies on time-consuming GAN inversion and test-time optimization, our framework can reconstruct the Gaussian full-head model given a single unposed image in a single forward pass. This enables fast reconstruction and rendering during inference. To mitigate the lack of large-scale 3D head assets, we propose a large-scale synthetic dataset from trained 3D GANs and train our framework using only synthetic data. For efficient high-fidelity generation, we introduce a coarse-to-fine Gaussian head generation pipeline, where sparse points from the FLAME model interact with the image features by transformer blocks for feature extraction and coarse shape reconstruction, which are then densified for high-fidelity reconstruction. To fully leverage the prior knowledge residing in pretrained 3D GANs for effective reconstruction, we propose a dual-branch framework that effectively aggregates the structured spherical triplane feature and unstructured point-based features for more effective Gaussian head reconstruction. Experimental results show the effectiveness of our framework towards existing work. Project page at: https://panolam.github.io/.

The field of portrait image animation, driven by speech audio input, has experienced significant advancements in the generation of realistic and dynamic portraits. This research delves into the complexities of synchronizing facial movements and creating visually appealing, temporally consistent animations within the framework of diffusion-based methodologies. Moving away from traditional paradigms that rely on parametric models for intermediate facial representations, our innovative approach embraces the end-to-end diffusion paradigm and introduces a hierarchical audio-driven visual synthesis module to enhance the precision of alignment between audio inputs and visual outputs, encompassing lip, expression, and pose motion. Our proposed network architecture seamlessly integrates diffusion-based generative models, a UNet-based denoiser, temporal alignment techniques, and a reference network. The proposed hierarchical audio-driven visual synthesis offers adaptive control over expression and pose diversity, enabling more effective personalization tailored to different identities. Through a comprehensive evaluation that incorporates both qualitative and quantitative analyses, our approach demonstrates obvious enhancements in image and video quality, lip synchronization precision, and motion diversity. FloorPlanCAD: A Large-Scale CAD Drawing Dataset for Panoptic Symbol SpottingZhiwen Fan, Lingjie Zhu, Honghua Li et al.
Access to large and diverse computer-aided design (CAD) drawings is critical for developing symbol spotting algorithms. In this paper, we present FloorPlanCAD, a large-scale real-world CAD drawing dataset containing over 10,000 floor plans, ranging from residential to commercial buildings. CAD drawings in the dataset are all represented as vector graphics, which enable us to provide line-grained annotations of 30 object categories. Equipped by such annotations, we introduce the task of panoptic symbol spotting, which requires to spot not only instances of countable things, but also the semantic of uncountable stuff. Aiming to solve this task, we propose a novel method by combining Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs) with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which captures both non-Euclidean and Euclidean features and can be trained end-to-end. The proposed CNN-GCN method achieved state-of-the-art (SOTA) performance on the task of semantic symbol spotting, and help us build a baseline network for the panoptic symbol spotting task. Our contributions are three-fold: 1) to the best of our knowledge, the presented CAD drawing dataset is the first of its kind; 2) the panoptic symbol spotting task considers the spotting of both thing instances and stuff semantic as one recognition problem; and 3) we presented a baseline solution to the panoptic symbol spotting task based on a novel CNN-GCN method, which achieved SOTA performance on semantic symbol spotting. We believe that these contributions will boost research in related areas.

Stereo Matching by Self-supervision of Multiscopic VisionWeihao Yuan, Yazhan Zhang, Bingkun Wu et al.
Self-supervised learning for depth estimation possesses several advantages over supervised learning. The benefits of no need for ground-truth depth, online fine-tuning, and better generalization with unlimited data attract researchers to seek self-supervised solutions. In this work, we propose a new self-supervised framework for stereo matching utilizing multiple images captured at aligned camera positions. A cross photometric loss, an uncertainty-aware mutual-supervision loss, and a new smoothness loss are introduced to optimize the network in learning disparity maps end-to-end without ground-truth depth information. To train this framework, we build a new multiscopic dataset consisting of synthetic images rendered by 3D engines and real images captured by real cameras. After being trained with only the synthetic images, our network can perform well in unseen outdoor scenes. Our experiment shows that our model obtains better disparity maps than previous unsupervised methods on the KITTI dataset and is comparable to supervised methods when generalized to unseen data. AR Mapping: Accurate and Efficient Mapping for Augmented RealityRui Huang, Chuan Fang, Kejie Qiu et al.
Augmented reality (AR) has gained increasingly attention from both research and industry communities. By overlaying digital information and content onto the physical world, AR enables users to experience the world in a more informative and efficient manner. As a major building block for AR systems, localization aims at determining the device's pose from a pre-built "map" consisting of visual and depth information in a known environment. While the localization problem has been widely studied in the literature, the "map" for AR systems is rarely discussed. In this paper, we introduce the AR Map for a specific scene to be composed of 1) color images with 6-DOF poses; 2) dense depth maps for each image and 3) a complete point cloud map. We then propose an efficient end-to-end solution to generating and evaluating AR Maps. Firstly, for efficient data capture, a backpack scanning device is presented with a unified calibration pipeline. Secondly, we propose an AR mapping pipeline which takes the input from the scanning device and produces accurate AR Maps. Finally, we present an approach to evaluating the accuracy of AR Maps with the help of the highly accurate reconstruction result from a high-end laser scanner. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first time to present an end-to-end solution to efficient and accurate mapping for AR applications.

Compact 3D Map-Based Monocular Localization Using Semantic Edge AlignmentKejie Qiu, Shenzhou Chen, Jiahui Zhang et al.
Accurate localization is fundamental to a variety of applications, such as navigation, robotics, autonomous driving, and Augmented Reality (AR). Different from incremental localization, global localization has no drift caused by error accumulation, which is desired in many application scenarios. In addition to GPS used in the open air, 3D maps are also widely used as alternative global localization references. In this paper, we propose a compact 3D map-based global localization system using a low-cost monocular camera and an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). The proposed compact map consists of two types of simplified elements with multiple semantic labels, which is well adaptive to various man-made environments like urban environments. Also, semantic edge features are used for the key image-map registration, which is robust against occlusion and long-term appearance changes in the environments. To further improve the localization performance, the key semantic edge alignment is formulated as an optimization problem based on initial poses predicted by an independent VIO (Visual-Inertial Odometry) module. The localization system is realized with modular design in real time. We evaluate the localization accuracy through real-world experimental results compared with ground truth, long-term localization performance is also demonstrated.

Self-Supervised Human Depth Estimation from Monocular VideosFeitong Tan, Hao Zhu, Zhaopeng Cui et al.
Previous methods on estimating detailed human depth often require supervised training with `ground truth' depth data. This paper presents a self-supervised method that can be trained on YouTube videos without known depth, which makes training data collection simple and improves the generalization of the learned network. The self-supervised learning is achieved by minimizing a photo-consistency loss, which is evaluated between a video frame and its neighboring frames warped according to the estimated depth and the 3D non-rigid motion of the human body. To solve this non-rigid motion, we first estimate a rough SMPL model at each video frame and compute the non-rigid body motion accordingly, which enables self-supervised learning on estimating the shape details. Experiments demonstrate that our method enjoys better generalization and performs much better on data in the wild.

End-to-End Learning Local Multi-view Descriptors for 3D Point CloudsLei Li, Siyu Zhu, Hongbo Fu et al.
In this work, we propose an end-to-end framework to learn local multi-view descriptors for 3D point clouds. To adopt a similar multi-view representation, existing studies use hand-crafted viewpoints for rendering in a preprocessing stage, which is detached from the subsequent descriptor learning stage. In our framework, we integrate the multi-view rendering into neural networks by using a differentiable renderer, which allows the viewpoints to be optimizable parameters for capturing more informative local context of interest points. To obtain discriminative descriptors, we also design a soft-view pooling module to attentively fuse convolutional features across views. Extensive experiments on existing 3D registration benchmarks show that our method outperforms existing local descriptors both quantitatively and qualitatively.
Cascade Cost Volume for High-Resolution Multi-View Stereo and Stereo MatchingXiaodong Gu, Zhiwen Fan, Zuozhuo Dai et al.
The deep multi-view stereo (MVS) and stereo matching approaches generally construct 3D cost volumes to regularize and regress the output depth or disparity. These methods are limited when high-resolution outputs are needed since the memory and time costs grow cubically as the volume resolution increases. In this paper, we propose a both memory and time efficient cost volume formulation that is complementary to existing multi-view stereo and stereo matching approaches based on 3D cost volumes. First, the proposed cost volume is built upon a standard feature pyramid encoding geometry and context at gradually finer scales. Then, we can narrow the depth (or disparity) range of each stage by the depth (or disparity) map from the previous stage. With gradually higher cost volume resolution and adaptive adjustment of depth (or disparity) intervals, the output is recovered in a coarser to fine manner. We apply the cascade cost volume to the representative MVS-Net, and obtain a 23.1% improvement on DTU benchmark (1st place), with 50.6% and 74.2% reduction in GPU memory and run-time. It is also the state-of-the-art learning-based method on Tanks and Temples benchmark. The statistics of accuracy, run-time and GPU memory on other representative stereo CNNs also validate the effectiveness of our proposed method.

Parallel Structure from Motion from Local Increment to Global AveragingSiyu Zhu, Tianwei Shen, Lei Zhou et al.
In this paper, we tackle the accurate and consistent Structure from Motion (SfM) problem, in particular camera registration, far exceeding the memory of a single computer in parallel. Different from the previous methods which drastically simplify the parameters of SfM and sacrifice the accuracy of the final reconstruction, we try to preserve the connectivities among cameras by proposing a camera clustering algorithm to divide a large SfM problem into smaller sub-problems in terms of camera clusters with overlapping. We then exploit a hybrid formulation that applies the relative poses from local incremental SfM into a global motion averaging framework and produce accurate and consistent global camera poses. Our scalable formulation in terms of camera clusters is highly applicable to the whole SfM pipeline including track generation, local SfM, 3D point triangulation and bundle adjustment. We are even able to reconstruct the camera poses of a city-scale data-set containing more than one million high-resolution images with superior accuracy and robustness evaluated on benchmark, Internet, and sequential data-sets.

Detecting Figures and Part Labels in Patents: Competition-Based Development of Image Processing AlgorithmsChristoph Riedl, Richard Zanibbi, Marti A. Hearst et al.
We report the findings of a month-long online competition in which participants developed algorithms for augmenting the digital version of patent documents published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The goal was to detect figures and part labels in U.S. patent drawing pages. The challenge drew 232 teams of two, of which 70 teams (30%) submitted solutions. Collectively, teams submitted 1,797 solutions that were compiled on the competition servers. Participants reported spending an average of 63 hours developing their solutions, resulting in a total of 5,591 hours of development time. A manually labeled dataset of 306 patents was used for training, online system tests, and evaluation. The design and performance of the top-5 systems are presented, along with a system developed after the competition which illustrates that winning teams produced near state-of-the-art results under strict time and computation constraints. For the 1st place system, the harmonic mean of recall and precision (f-measure) was 88.57% for figure region detection, 78.81% for figure regions with correctly recognized figure titles, and 70.98% for part label detection and character recognition. Data and software from the competition are available through the online UCI Machine Learning repository to inspire follow-on work by the image processing community.
