The Beyond the Fence Musical and Computer Says Show Documentary

During 2015 and early 2016, the cultural application of Computational Creativity research and practice took a big leap forward, with a project where multiple computational systems were used to provide advice and material for a new musical theatre production. Billed as the world's first 'computer musical... conceived by computer and substantially crafted by computer', Beyond The Fence was staged in the Arts Theatre in London's West End during February and March of 2016. Various computational approaches to analytical and generative sub-projects were used to bring about the musical, and these efforts were recorded in two 1-hour documentary films made by Wingspan Productions, which were aired on SkyArts under the title Computer Says Show. We provide details here of the project conception and execution, including details of the systems which took on some of the creative responsibility in writing the musical, and the contributions they made. We also provide details of the impact of the project, including a perspective from the two (human) writers with overall control of the creative aspects the musical.

Avoiding an AI-imposed Taylor's Version of all music history

As future musical AIs adhere closely to human music, they may form their own attachments to particular human artists in their databases, and these biases may in the worst case lead to potential existential threats to all musical history. AI super fans may act to corrupt the historical record and extant recordings in favour of their own preferences, and preservation of the diversity of world music culture may become even more of a pressing issue than the imposition of 12 tone equal temperament or other Western homogenisations. We discuss the technical capability of AI cover software and produce Taylor's Versions of famous tracks from Western pop history as provocative examples; the quality of these productions does not affect the overall argument (which might even see a future AI try to impose the sound of paperclips onto all existing audio files, let alone Taylor Swift). We discuss some potential defenses against the danger of future musical monopolies, whilst analysing the feasibility of a maximal 'Taylor Swiftication' of the complete musical record.

The Rarity of Musical Audio Signals Within the Space of Possible Audio Generation

A white noise signal can access any possible configuration of values, though statistically over many samples tends to a uniform spectral distribution, and is highly unlikely to produce intelligible sound. But how unlikely? The probability that white noise generates a music-like signal over different durations is analyzed, based on some necessary features observed in real music audio signals such as mostly proximate movement and zero crossing rate. Given the mathematical results, the rarity of music as a signal is considered overall. The applicability of this study is not just to show that music has a precious rarity value, but that examination of the size of music relative to the overall size of audio signal space provides information to inform new generations of algorithmic music system (which are now often founded on audio signal generation directly, and may relate to white noise via such machine learning processes as diffusion). Estimated upper bounds on the rarity of music to the size of various physical and musical spaces are compared, to better understand the magnitude of the results (pun intended). Underlying the research are the questions `how much music is still out there?' and `how much music could a machine learning process actually reach?'.
