UAV-Enhanced Combination to Application: Comprehensive Analysis and Benchmarking of a Human Detection Dataset for Disaster Scenarios

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have revolutionized search and rescue (SAR) operations, but the lack of specialized human detection datasets for training machine learning models poses a significant challenge.To address this gap, this paper introduces the Combination to Application (C2A) dataset, synthesized by overlaying human poses onto UAV-captured disaster scenes. Through extensive experimentation with state-of-the-art detection models, we demonstrate that models fine-tuned on the C2A dataset exhibit substantial performance improvements compared to those pre-trained on generic aerial datasets. Furthermore, we highlight the importance of combining the C2A dataset with general human datasets to achieve optimal performance and generalization across various scenarios. This points out the crucial need for a tailored dataset to enhance the effectiveness of SAR operations. Our contributions also include developing dataset creation pipeline and integrating diverse human poses and disaster scenes information to assess the severity of disaster scenarios. Our findings advocate for future developments, to ensure that SAR operations benefit from the most realistic and effective AI-assisted interventions possible.

Pattern Enhanced Multi-Turn Jailbreaking: Exploiting Structural Vulnerabilities in Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) remain vulnerable to multi-turn jailbreaking attacks that exploit conversational context to bypass safety constraints gradually. These attacks target different harm categories (like malware generation, harassment, or fraud) through distinct conversational approaches (educational discussions, personal experiences, hypothetical scenarios). Existing multi-turn jailbreaking methods often rely on heuristic or ad hoc exploration strategies, providing limited insight into underlying model weaknesses. The relationship between conversation patterns and model vulnerabilities across harm categories remains poorly understood. We propose Pattern Enhanced Chain of Attack (PE-CoA), a framework of five conversation patterns to construct effective multi-turn jailbreaks through natural dialogue. Evaluating PE-CoA on twelve LLMs spanning ten harm categories, we achieve state-of-the-art performance, uncovering pattern-specific vulnerabilities and LLM behavioral characteristics: models exhibit distinct weakness profiles where robustness to one conversational pattern does not generalize to others, and model families share similar failure modes. Cross-Attention with Confidence Weighting for Multi-Channel Audio Alignment

Multi-channel audio alignment is a key requirement in bioacoustic monitoring, spatial audio systems, and acoustic localization. However, existing methods often struggle to address nonlinear clock drift and lack mechanisms for quantifying uncertainty. Traditional methods like Cross-correlation and Dynamic Time Warping assume simple drift patterns and provide no reliability measures. Meanwhile, recent deep learning models typically treat alignment as a binary classification task, overlooking inter-channel dependencies and uncertainty estimation. We introduce a method that combines cross-attention mechanisms with confidence-weighted scoring to improve multi-channel audio synchronization. We extend BEATs encoders with cross-attention layers to model temporal relationships between channels. We also develop a confidence-weighted scoring function that uses the full prediction distribution instead of binary thresholding. Our method achieved first place in the BioDCASE 2025 Task 1 challenge with 0.30 MSE average across test datasets, compared to 0.58 for the deep learning baseline. On individual datasets, we achieved 0.14 MSE on ARU data (77% reduction) and 0.45 MSE on zebra finch data (18% reduction). The framework supports probabilistic temporal alignment, moving beyond point estimates. While validated in a bioacoustic context, the approach is applicable to a broader range of multi-channel audio tasks where alignment confidence is critical. Weakly Supervised Multiple Instance Learning for Whale Call Detection and Temporal Localization in Long-Duration Passive Acoustic Monitoring

Marine ecosystem monitoring via Passive Acoustic Monitoring (PAM) generates vast data, but deep learning often requires precise annotations and short segments. We introduce DSMIL-LocNet, a Multiple Instance Learning framework for whale call detection and localization using only bag-level labels. Our dual-stream model processes 2-30 minute audio segments, leveraging spectral and temporal features with attention-based instance selection. Tests on Antarctic whale data show longer contexts improve classification (F1: 0.8-0.9) while medium instances ensure localization precision (0.65-0.70). Ecologically-Constrained Task Arithmetic for Multi-Taxa Bioacoustic Classifiers Without Shared Data

Training data for bioacoustics is scattered across taxa, regions, and institutions. Centralizing it all is often infeasible. We show that independently fine-tuned BEATs encoders can be composed into a unified 661-species classifier via task vector arithmetic without sharing data. We find that bioacoustic task vectors are near-orthogonal (cosine 0.01-0.09). Their separation aligns closely with spectral distribution distance, a gradient consistent with the acoustic niche hypothesis. This geometry makes simple averaging optimal while sign-conflict methods reduce accuracy by one to six percentage points. Composition also creates an asymmetric gap: species-rich groups lose accuracy relative to joint training while underrepresented taxa gain, a redistribution useful for equitable biodiversity monitoring. We verify linear mode connectivity across all taxonomic pairs, demonstrate zero-shot transfer to new regions, and identify domain negation as a boundary condition where composition fails. These results enable a collaborative paradigm for bioacoustics where institutions share only task vectors to assemble multi-taxa classifiers, preserving data privacy.

Multilingual Gloss-free Sign Language Translation: Towards Building a Sign Language Foundation Model

Sign Language Translation (SLT) aims to convert sign language (SL) videos into spoken language text, thereby bridging the communication gap between the sign and the spoken community. While most existing works focus on translating a single sign language into a single spoken language (one-to-one SLT), leveraging multilingual resources could mitigate low-resource issues and enhance accessibility. However, multilingual SLT (MLSLT) remains unexplored due to language conflicts and alignment difficulties across SLs and spoken languages. To address these challenges, we propose a multilingual gloss-free model with dual CTC objectives for token-level SL identification and spoken text generation. Our model supports 10 SLs and handles one-to-one, many-to-one, and many-to-many SLT tasks, achieving competitive performance compared to state-of-the-art methods on three widely adopted benchmarks: multilingual SP-10, PHOENIX14T, and CSL-Daily.

Improvement in Sign Language Translation Using Text CTC Alignment

Current sign language translation (SLT) approaches often rely on gloss-based supervision with Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC), limiting their ability to handle non-monotonic alignments between sign language video and spoken text. In this work, we propose a novel method combining joint CTC/Attention and transfer learning. The joint CTC/Attention introduces hierarchical encoding and integrates CTC with the attention mechanism during decoding, effectively managing both monotonic and non-monotonic alignments. Meanwhile, transfer learning helps bridge the modality gap between vision and language in SLT. Experimental results on two widely adopted benchmarks, RWTH-PHOENIX-Weather 2014 T and CSL-Daily, show that our method achieves results comparable to state-of-the-art and outperforms the pure-attention baseline. Additionally, this work opens a new door for future research into gloss-free SLT using text-based CTC alignment.

The Talking Robot: Distortion-Robust Acoustic Models for Robot-Robot Communication

We present Artoo, a learned acoustic communication system for robots that replaces hand-designed signal processing with end-to-end co-trained neural networks. Our system pairs a lightweight text-to-speech (TTS) transmitter (1.18M parameters) with a conformer-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) receiver (938K parameters), jointly optimized through a differentiable channel. Unlike human speech, robot-to-robot communication is paralinguistics-free: the system need not preserve timbre, prosody, or naturalness, only maximize decoding accuracy under channel distortion. Through a three-phase co-training curriculum, the TTS transmitter learns to produce distortion-robust acoustic encodings that surpass the baseline under noise, achieving 8.3% CER at 0 dB SNR. The entire system requires only 2.1M parameters (8.4 MB) and runs in under 13 ms end-to-end on a CPU, making it suitable for deployment on resource-constrained robotic platforms.

Knowledge-Augmented Vision Language Models for Underwater Bioacoustic Spectrogram Analysis

Marine mammal vocalization analysis depends on interpreting bioacoustic spectrograms. Vision Language Models (VLMs) are not trained on these domain-specific visualizations. We investigate whether VLMs can extract meaningful patterns from spectrograms visually. Our framework integrates VLM interpretation with LLM-based validation to build domain knowledge. This enables adaptation to acoustic data without manual annotation or model retraining.

From Blurry to Brilliant Detection: YOLO-Based Aerial Object Detection with Super Resolution

Aerial object detection presents challenges from small object sizes, high density clustering, and image quality degradation from distance and motion blur. These factors create an information bottleneck where limited pixel representation cannot encode sufficient discriminative features. B2BDet addresses this with a two-stage framework that applies domain-specific super-resolution during inference, followed by detection using an enhanced YOLOv5 architecture. Unlike training-time super-resolution approaches that enhance learned representations, our method recovers visual information from each input image. The approach combines aerial-optimized SRGAN fine-tuning with architectural innovations including an Efficient Attention Module (EAM) and Cross-Layer Feature Pyramid Network (CLFPN). Evaluation across four aerial datasets shows performance gains, with VisDrone achieving 52.5% mAP using only 27.7M parameters. Ablation studies show that super-resolution preprocessing contributes +2.6% mAP improvement while architectural enhancements add +2.9%, yielding +5.5% total improvement over baseline YOLOv5. The method achieves computational efficiency with 53.8% parameter reduction compared to recent approaches while achieving strong small object detection performance.

Retraining-free Customized ASR for Enharmonic Words Based on a Named-Entity-Aware Model and Phoneme Similarity Estimation

End-to-end automatic speech recognition (E2E-ASR) has the potential to improve performance, but a specific issue that needs to be addressed is the difficulty it has in handling enharmonic words: named entities (NEs) with the same pronunciation and part of speech that are spelled differently. This often occurs with Japanese personal names that have the same pronunciation but different Kanji characters. Since such NE words tend to be important keywords, ASR easily loses user trust if it misrecognizes them. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a novel retraining-free customized method for E2E-ASRs based on a named-entity-aware E2E-ASR model and phoneme similarity estimation. Experimental results show that the proposed method improves the target NE character error rate by 35.7% on average relative to the conventional E2E-ASR model when selecting personal names as a target NE.

Metric-based multimodal meta-learning for human movement identification via footstep recognition

We describe a novel metric-based learning approach that introduces a multimodal framework and uses deep audio and geophone encoders in siamese configuration to design an adaptable and lightweight supervised model. This framework eliminates the need for expensive data labeling procedures and learns general-purpose representations from low multisensory data obtained from omnipresent sensing systems. These sensing systems provide numerous applications and various use cases in activity recognition tasks. Here, we intend to explore the human footstep movements from indoor environments and analyze representations from a small self-collected dataset of acoustic and vibration-based sensors. The core idea is to learn plausible similarities between two sensory traits and combining representations from audio and geophone signals. We present a generalized framework to learn embeddings from temporal and spatial features extracted from audio and geophone signals. We then extract the representations in a shared space to maximize the learning of a compatibility function between acoustic and geophone features. This, in turn, can be used effectively to carry out a classification task from the learned model, as demonstrated by assigning high similarity to the pairs with a human footstep movement and lower similarity to pairs containing no footstep movement. Performance analyses show that our proposed multimodal framework achieves a 19.99\% accuracy increase (in absolute terms) and avoided overfitting on the evaluation set when the training samples were increased from 200 pairs to just 500 pairs while satisfactorily learning the audio and geophone representations. Our results employ a metric-based contrastive learning approach for multi-sensor data to mitigate the impact of data scarcity and perform human movement identification with limited data size.

CNN-based MultiChannel End-to-End Speech Recognition for everyday home environments

Casual conversations involving multiple speakers and noises from surrounding devices are common in everyday environments, which degrades the performances of automatic speech recognition systems. These challenging characteristics of environments are the target of the CHiME-5 challenge. By employing a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based multichannel end-to-end speech recognition system, this study attempts to overcome the presents difficulties in everyday environments. The system comprises of an attention-based encoder-decoder neural network that directly generates a text as an output from a sound input. The multichannel CNN encoder, which uses residual connections and batch renormalization, is trained with augmented data, including white noise injection. The experimental results show that the word error rate is reduced by 8.5% and 0.6% absolute from a single channel end-to-end and the best baseline (LF-MMI TDNN) on the CHiME-5 corpus, respectively.

Weakly Supervised Deep Recurrent Neural Networks for Basic Dance Step Generation

Synthesizing human's movements such as dancing is a flourishing research field which has several applications in computer graphics. Recent studies have demonstrated the advantages of deep neural networks (DNNs) for achieving remarkable performance in motion and music tasks with little effort for feature pre-processing. However, applying DNNs for generating dance to a piece of music is nevertheless challenging, because of 1) DNNs need to generate large sequences while mapping the music input, 2) the DNN needs to constraint the motion beat to the music, and 3) DNNs require a considerable amount of hand-crafted data. In this study, we propose a weakly supervised deep recurrent method for real-time basic dance generation with audio power spectrum as input. The proposed model employs convolutional layers and a multilayered Long Short-Term memory (LSTM) to process the audio input. Then, another deep LSTM layer decodes the target dance sequence. Notably, this end-to-end approach has 1) an auto-conditioned decode configuration that reduces accumulation of feedback error of large dance sequence, 2) uses a contrastive cost function to regulate the mapping between the music and motion beat, and 3) trains with weak labels generated from the motion beat, reducing the amount of hand-crafted data. We evaluate the proposed network based on i) the similarities between generated and the baseline dancer motion with a cross entropy measure for large dance sequences, and ii) accurate timing between the music and motion beat with an F-measure. Experimental results revealed that, after training using a small dataset, the model generates basic dance steps with low cross entropy and maintains an F-measure score similar to that of a baseline dancer.

Robust Recognition of Simultaneous Speech By a Mobile Robot

This paper describes a system that gives a mobile robot the ability to perform automatic speech recognition with simultaneous speakers. A microphone array is used along with a real-time implementation of Geometric Source Separation and a post-filter that gives a further reduction of interference from other sources. The post-filter is also used to estimate the reliability of spectral features and compute a missing feature mask. The mask is used in a missing feature theory-based speech recognition system to recognize the speech from simultaneous Japanese speakers in the context of a humanoid robot. Recognition rates are presented for three simultaneous speakers located at 2 meters from the robot. The system was evaluated on a 200 word vocabulary at different azimuths between sources, ranging from 10 to 90 degrees. Compared to the use of the microphone array source separation alone, we demonstrate an average reduction in relative recognition error rate of 24% with the post-filter and of 42% when the missing features approach is combined with the post-filter. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our multi-source microphone array post-filter and the improvement it provides when used in conjunction with the missing features theory.
