Multi-Dimensional Evaluation of LLMs for Grammatical Error CorrectionAdnan Labib, Qiao Wang, Yixuan Huang et al.
Automated assistants for Grammatical Error Correction are now embedded in educational platforms serving millions of learners, yet three critical gaps remain in this domain: (1) latest-generation Large Language Models (LLMs) lack comprehensive evaluation on grammar correction tasks; (2) whether combining these LLMs improves correction quality is unexplored; and (3) the extent to which reference-based metrics underestimate GEC system performance has not been adequately quantified. In this study, first, we evaluate latest-generation LLMs on edit precision, fluency preservation, and meaning retention, showing fine-tuned GPT-4o achieves state-of-the-art performance across all three dimensions. Second, through grammatical error type analysis we demonstrate that individual LLMs exhibit highly similar error correction patterns ($ρ=0.947$). Third, we show that reference-based metrics underestimate GEC performance with 73.76% of GPT-4o corrections different from gold standards being equally valid or even superior. These GEC evaluation findings equip educators with guidance for selecting GEC assistants that enhance rather than constrain student linguistic development. We make our data, code, and models publicly available.

Baitradar: A Multi-Model Clickbait Detection Algorithm Using Deep LearningBhanuka Gamage, Adnan Labib, Aisha Joomun et al.
Following the rising popularity of YouTube, there is an emerging problem on this platform called clickbait, which provokes users to click on videos using attractive titles and thumbnails. As a result, users ended up watching a video that does not have the content as publicized in the title. This issue is addressed in this study by proposing an algorithm called BaitRadar, which uses a deep learning technique where six inference models are jointly consulted to make the final classification decision. These models focus on different attributes of the video, including title, comments, thumbnail, tags, video statistics and audio transcript. The final classification is attained by computing the average of multiple models to provide a robust and accurate output even in situation where there is missing data. The proposed method is tested on 1,400 YouTube videos. On average, a test accuracy of 98% is achieved with an inference time of less than 2s.

GenQuest: An LLM-based Text Adventure Game for Language LearnersQiao Wang, Adnan Labib, Robert Swier et al.
GenQuest is a generative text adventure game that leverages Large Language Models (LLMs) to facilitate second language learning through immersive, interactive storytelling. The system engages English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners in a collaborative "choose-your-own-adventure" style narrative, dynamically generated in response to learner choices. Game mechanics such as branching decision points and story milestones are incorporated to maintain narrative coherence while allowing learner-driven plot development. Key pedagogical features include content generation tailored to each learner's proficiency level, and a vocabulary assistant that provides in-context explanations of learner-queried text strings, ranging from words and phrases to sentences. Findings from a pilot study with university EFL students in China indicate promising vocabulary gains and positive user perceptions. Also discussed are suggestions from participants regarding the narrative length and quality, and the request for multi-modal content such as illustrations.
