mmFUSION: Multimodal Fusion for 3D Objects DetectionJaved Ahmad, Alessio Del Bue
Multi-sensor fusion is essential for accurate 3D object detection in self-driving systems. Camera and LiDAR are the most commonly used sensors, and usually, their fusion happens at the early or late stages of 3D detectors with the help of regions of interest (RoIs). On the other hand, fusion at the intermediate level is more adaptive because it does not need RoIs from modalities but is complex as the features of both modalities are presented from different points of view. In this paper, we propose a new intermediate-level multi-modal fusion (mmFUSION) approach to overcome these challenges. First, the mmFUSION uses separate encoders for each modality to compute features at a desired lower space volume. Second, these features are fused through cross-modality and multi-modality attention mechanisms proposed in mmFUSION. The mmFUSION framework preserves multi-modal information and learns to complement modalities' deficiencies through attention weights. The strong multi-modal features from the mmFUSION framework are fed to a simple 3D detection head for 3D predictions. We evaluate mmFUSION on the KITTI and NuScenes dataset where it performs better than available early, intermediate, late, and even two-stage based fusion schemes. Hands-Free Heritage: Automated 3D Scanning for Cultural Heritage DigitizationJaved Ahmad, Federico Dassiè, Selene Frascella et al.
High-fidelity 3D scanning is essential for preserving cultural heritage artefacts, supporting documentation, analysis, and long-term conservation. However, conventional methods typically require specialized expertise and manual intervention to maintain optimal scanning conditions and coverage. We present an automated two-robot scanning system that eliminates the need for handheld or semi-automatic workflows by combining coordinated robotic manipulation with high-resolution 3D scanning. Our system parameterizes the scanning space into distinct regions, enabling coordinated motion planning between a scanner-equipped robot and a tray-handling robot. Optimized trajectory planning and waypoint distribution ensure comprehensive surface coverage, minimize occlusions, and balance reconstruction accuracy with system efficiency. Experimental results show that our approach achieves significantly lower Chamfer Distance and higher F-score compared to baseline methods, offering superior geometric accuracy, improved digitization efficiency, and reduced reliance on expert operators.

From Fields to Splats: A Cross-Domain Survey of Real-Time Neural Scene RepresentationsJaved Ahmad, Penggang Gao, Donatien Delehelle et al.
Neural scene representations such as Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) and 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) have transformed how 3D environments are modeled, rendered, and interpreted. NeRF introduced view-consistent photorealism via volumetric rendering; 3DGS has rapidly emerged as an explicit, efficient alternative that supports high-quality rendering, faster optimization, and integration into hybrid pipelines for enhanced photorealism and task-driven scene understanding. This survey examines how 3DGS is being adopted across SLAM, telepresence and teleoperation, robotic manipulation, and 3D content generation. Despite their differences, these domains share common goals: photorealistic rendering, meaningful 3D structure, and accurate downstream tasks. We organize the review around unified research questions that explain why 3DGS is increasingly displacing NeRF-based approaches: What technical advantages drive its adoption? How does it adapt to different input modalities and domain-specific constraints? What limitations remain? By systematically comparing domain-specific pipelines, we show that 3DGS balances photorealism, geometric fidelity, and computational efficiency. The survey offers a roadmap for leveraging neural rendering not only for image synthesis but also for perception, interaction, and content creation across real and virtual environments.
