S-SPPO: Semantic-Calibrated Self-Play Preference Optimization

Aligning Large Language Models (LLMs) with human preferences is often formulated via Direct Preference Optimization (DPO). However, the standard Bradley-Terry instantiation of DPO is limited in modeling common departures from transitivity in human preferences. To address this, recent work has introduced Self-Play Preference Optimization (SPPO), which iteratively refines the policy by training on self-generated win-lose pairs. Our investigation, however, reveals a critical instability in SPPO: the optimization is prone to policy degeneration when the preference oracle assigns overly confident wins to semantically indistinguishable responses. To mitigate this, we propose S-SPPO, a dual-space semantic calibration framework comprising: i) Supervision Calibration via semantic gating, which anneals win rate targets toward the maximum-entropy baseline as semantic overlap increases; and ii) Representation Calibration via latent repulsion to enforce geometric diversity to prevent manifold collapse and maintain latent diversity between chosen and rejected samples. Theoretically, we show that the calibration preserves the constant-sum game structure, facilitating convergence to a Nash Equilibrium. Empirically, S-SPPO avoids the performance degradation seen in prior methods, achieving 52.19% win rate and 47.46% length-controlled win rate on AlpacaEval 2.0 with Llama-3-8B, without using additional human-annotated preferences during training. Image Super-resolution Via Latent Diffusion: A Sampling-space Mixture Of Experts And Frequency-augmented Decoder Approach

The recent use of diffusion prior, enhanced by pre-trained text-image models, has markedly elevated the performance of image super-resolution (SR). To alleviate the huge computational cost required by pixel-based diffusion SR, latent-based methods utilize a feature encoder to transform the image and then implement the SR image generation in a compact latent space. Nevertheless, there are two major issues that limit the performance of latent-based diffusion. First, the compression of latent space usually causes reconstruction distortion. Second, huge computational cost constrains the parameter scale of the diffusion model. To counteract these issues, we first propose a frequency compensation module that enhances the frequency components from latent space to pixel space. The reconstruction distortion (especially for high-frequency information) can be significantly decreased. Then, we propose to use Sample-Space Mixture of Experts (SS-MoE) to achieve more powerful latent-based SR, which steadily improves the capacity of the model without a significant increase in inference costs. These carefully crafted designs contribute to performance improvements in largely explored 4x blind super-resolution benchmarks and extend to large magnification factors, i.e., 8x image SR benchmarks. Tackling Data Corruption in Offline Reinforcement Learning via Sequence Modeling

Learning policy from offline datasets through offline reinforcement learning (RL) holds promise for scaling data-driven decision-making while avoiding unsafe and costly online interactions. However, real-world data collected from sensors or humans often contains noise and errors, posing a significant challenge for existing offline RL methods, particularly when the real-world data is limited. Our study reveals that prior research focusing on adapting predominant offline RL methods based on temporal difference learning still falls short under data corruption when the dataset is limited. In contrast, we discover that vanilla sequence modeling methods, such as Decision Transformer, exhibit robustness against data corruption, even without specialized modifications. To unlock the full potential of sequence modeling, we propose Robust Decision Rransformer (RDT) by incorporating three simple yet effective robust techniques: embedding dropout to improve the model's robustness against erroneous inputs, Gaussian weighted learning to mitigate the effects of corrupted labels, and iterative data correction to eliminate corrupted data from the source. Extensive experiments on MuJoCo, Kitchen, and Adroit tasks demonstrate RDT's superior performance under various data corruption scenarios compared to prior methods. Furthermore, RDT exhibits remarkable robustness in a more challenging setting that combines training-time data corruption with test-time observation perturbations. These results highlight the potential of sequence modeling for learning from noisy or corrupted offline datasets, thereby promoting the reliable application of offline RL in real-world scenarios. LIVABLE: Exploring Long-Tailed Classification of Software Vulnerability Types

Prior studies generally focus on software vulnerability detection and have demonstrated the effectiveness of Graph Neural Network (GNN)-based approaches for the task. Considering the various types of software vulnerabilities and the associated different degrees of severity, it is also beneficial to determine the type of each vulnerable code for developers. In this paper, we observe that the distribution of vulnerability type is long-tailed in practice, where a small portion of classes have massive samples (i.e., head classes) but the others contain only a few samples (i.e., tail classes). Directly adopting previous vulnerability detection approaches tends to result in poor detection performance, mainly due to two reasons. First, it is difficult to effectively learn the vulnerability representation due to the over-smoothing issue of GNNs. Second, vulnerability types in tails are hard to be predicted due to the extremely few associated samples.To alleviate these issues, we propose a Long-taIled software VulnerABiLity typE classification approach, called LIVABLE. LIVABLE mainly consists of two modules, including (1) vulnerability representation learning module, which improves the propagation steps in GNN to distinguish node representations by a differentiated propagation method. A sequence-to-sequence model is also involved to enhance the vulnerability representations. (2) adaptive re-weighting module, which adjusts the learning weights for different types according to the training epochs and numbers of associated samples by a novel training loss.

Multi-level Distillation of Semantic Knowledge for Pre-training Multilingual Language Model

Pre-trained multilingual language models play an important role in cross-lingual natural language understanding tasks. However, existing methods did not focus on learning the semantic structure of representation, and thus could not optimize their performance. In this paper, we propose Multi-level Multilingual Knowledge Distillation (MMKD), a novel method for improving multilingual language models. Specifically, we employ a teacher-student framework to adopt rich semantic representation knowledge in English BERT. We propose token-, word-, sentence-, and structure-level alignment objectives to encourage multiple levels of consistency between source-target pairs and correlation similarity between teacher and student models. We conduct experiments on cross-lingual evaluation benchmarks including XNLI, PAWS-X, and XQuAD. Experimental results show that MMKD outperforms other baseline models of similar size on XNLI and XQuAD and obtains comparable performance on PAWS-X. Especially, MMKD obtains significant performance gains on low-resource languages.

Harmonic Functions for Data Reconstruction on 3D Manifolds

In computer graphics, smooth data reconstruction on 2D or 3D manifolds usually refers to subdivision problems. Such a method is only valid based on dense sample points. The manifold usually needs to be triangulated into meshes (or patches) and each node on the mesh will have an initial value. While the mesh is refined the algorithm will provide a smooth function on the redefined manifolds. However, when data points are not dense and the original mesh is not allowed to be changed, how is the "continuous and/or smooth" reconstruction possible? This paper will present a new method using harmonic functions to solve the problem. Our method contains the following steps: (1) Partition the boundary surfaces of the 3D manifold based on sample points so that each sample point is on the edge of the partition. (2) Use gradually varied interpolation on the edges so that each point on edge will be assigned a value. In addition, all values on the edge are gradually varied. (3) Use discrete harmonic function to fit the unknown points, i.e. the points inside each partition patch. The fitted function will be a harmonic or a local harmonic function in each partitioned area. The function on edge will be "near" continuous (or "near" gradually varied). If we need a smoothed surface on the manifold, we can apply subdivision algorithms. This paper has also a philosophical advantage over triangulation meshes. People usually use triangulation for data reconstruction. This paper employs harmonic functions, a generalization of triangulation because linearity is a form of harmonic. Therefore, local harmonic initialization is more sophisticated then triangulation. This paper is a conceptual and methodological paper. This paper does not focus on detailed mathematical analysis nor fine algorithm design.

SODA: Semi On-Policy Black-Box Distillation for Large Language Models

Black-box knowledge distillation for large language models presents a strict trade-off. Simple off-policy methods (e.g., sequence-level knowledge distillation) struggle to correct the student's inherent errors. Fully on-policy methods (e.g., Generative Adversarial Distillation) solve this via adversarial training but introduce well-known training instability and crippling computational overhead. To address this dilemma, we propose SODA (Semi On-policy Distillation with Alignment), a highly efficient alternative motivated by the inherent capability gap between frontier teachers and much smaller base models. Because a compact student model's natural, zero-shot responses are almost strictly inferior to the powerful teacher's targets, we can construct a highly effective contrastive signal simply by pairing the teacher's optimal response with a one-time static snapshot of the student's outputs. This demonstrates that exposing the small student to its own static inferior behaviors is sufficient for high-quality distribution alignment, eliminating the need for costly dynamic rollouts and fragile adversarial balancing. Extensive evaluations across four compact Qwen2.5 and Llama-3 models validate this semi on-policy paradigm. SODA matches or outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on 15 out of 16 benchmark results. More importantly, it achieves this superior distillation quality while training 10 times faster, consuming 27% less peak GPU memory, and completely eliminating adversarial instability.

Bonnet: Ultra-fast whole-body bone segmentation from CT scans

This work proposes Bonnet, an ultra-fast sparse-volume pipeline for whole-body bone segmentation from CT scans. Accurate bone segmentation is important for surgical planning and anatomical analysis, but existing 3D voxel-based models such as nnU-Net and STU-Net require heavy computation and often take several minutes per scan, which limits time-critical use. The proposed Bonnet addresses this by integrating a series of novel framework components including HU-based bone thresholding, patch-wise inference with a sparse spconv-based U-Net, and multi-window fusion into a full-volume prediction. Trained on TotalSegmentator and evaluated without additional tuning on RibSeg, CT-Pelvic1K, and CT-Spine1K, Bonnet achieves high Dice across ribs, pelvis, and spine while running in only 2.69 seconds per scan on an RTX A6000. Compared to strong voxel baselines, Bonnet attains a similar accuracy but reduces inference time by roughly 25x on the same hardware and tiling setup. A Large-Scale Dataset for Molecular Structure-Language Description via a Rule-Regularized Method

Molecular function is largely determined by structure. Accurately aligning molecular structure with natural language is therefore essential for enabling large language models (LLMs) to reason about downstream chemical tasks. However, the substantial cost of human annotation makes it infeasible to construct large-scale, high-quality datasets of structure-grounded descriptions. In this work, we propose a fully automated annotation framework for generating precise molecular structure descriptions at scale. Our approach builds upon and extends a rule-based chemical nomenclature parser to interpret IUPAC names and construct enriched, structured XML metadata that explicitly encodes molecular structure. This metadata is then used to guide LLMs in producing accurate natural-language descriptions. Using this framework, we curate a large-scale dataset of approximately $163$k molecule-description pairs. A rigorous validation protocol combining LLM-based and expert human evaluation on a subset of $2,000$ molecules demonstrates a high description precision of $98.6\%$. The resulting dataset provides a reliable foundation for future molecule-language alignment, and the proposed annotation method is readily extensible to larger datasets and broader chemical tasks that rely on structural descriptions.

Climate Prompting: Generating the Madden-Julian Oscillation using Video Diffusion and Low-Dimensional Conditioning

Generative Deep Learning is a powerful tool for modeling of the Madden-Julian oscillation (MJO) in the tropics, yet its relationship to traditional theoretical frameworks remains poorly understood. Here we propose a video diffusion model, trained on atmospheric reanalysis, to synthetize long MJO sequences conditioned on key low-dimensional metrics. The generated MJOs capture key features including composites, power spectra and multiscale structures including convectively coupled waves, despite some bias. We then prompt the model to generate more tractable MJOs based on intentionally idealized low-dimensional conditionings, for example a perpetual MJO, an isolated modulation by seasons and/or the El Nino-Southern Oscillation, and so on. This enables deconstructing the underlying processes and identifying physical drivers. The present approach provides a practical framework for bridging the gap between low-dimensional MJO theory and high-resolution atmospheric complexity and will help tropical atmosphere prediction.

Rethinking Diverse Human Preference Learning through Principal Component Analysis

Understanding human preferences is crucial for improving foundation models and building personalized AI systems. However, preferences are inherently diverse and complex, making it difficult for traditional reward models to capture their full range. While fine-grained preference data can help, collecting it is expensive and hard to scale. In this paper, we introduce Decomposed Reward Models (DRMs), a novel approach that extracts diverse human preferences from binary comparisons without requiring fine-grained annotations. Our key insight is to represent human preferences as vectors and analyze them using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). By constructing a dataset of embedding differences between preferred and rejected responses, DRMs identify orthogonal basis vectors that capture distinct aspects of preference. These decomposed rewards can be flexibly combined to align with different user needs, offering an interpretable and scalable alternative to traditional reward models. We demonstrate that DRMs effectively extract meaningful preference dimensions (e.g., helpfulness, safety, humor) and adapt to new users without additional training. Contrastive Representation Disentanglement for Clustering

Clustering continues to be a significant and challenging task. Recent studies have demonstrated impressive results by applying clustering to feature representations acquired through self-supervised learning, particularly on small datasets. However, when dealing with datasets containing a large number of clusters, such as ImageNet, current methods struggle to achieve satisfactory clustering performance. In this paper, we introduce a novel method called Contrastive representation Disentanglement for Clustering (CDC) that leverages contrastive learning to directly disentangle the feature representation for clustering. In CDC, we decompose the representation into two distinct components: one component encodes categorical information under an equipartition constraint, and the other component captures instance-specific factors. To train our model, we propose a contrastive loss that effectively utilizes both components of the representation. We conduct a theoretical analysis of the proposed loss and highlight how it assigns different weights to negative samples during the process of disentangling the feature representation. Further analysis of the gradients reveals that larger weights emphasize a stronger focus on hard negative samples. As a result, the proposed loss exhibits strong expressiveness, enabling efficient disentanglement of categorical information. Through experimental evaluation on various benchmark datasets, our method demonstrates either state-of-the-art or highly competitive clustering performance. Notably, on the complete ImageNet dataset, we achieve an accuracy of 53.4%, surpassing existing methods by a substantial margin of +10.2%.

Towards Automated Community Notes Generation with Large Vision Language Models for Combating Contextual Deception

Community Notes have emerged as an effective crowd-sourced mechanism for combating online deception on social media platforms. However, its reliance on human contributors limits both the timeliness and scalability. In this work, we study the automated Community Notes generation method for image-based contextual deception, where an authentic image is paired with misleading context (e.g., time, entity, and event). Unlike prior work that primarily focuses on deception detection (i.e., judging whether a post is true or false in a binary manner), Community Notes-style systems need to generate concise and grounded notes that help users recover the missing or corrected context. This problem remains underexplored due to three reasons: (i) datasets that support the research are scarce; (ii) methods must handle the dynamic nature of contextual deception; (iii) evaluation is difficult because standard metrics do not capture whether notes actually improve user understanding. To address these gaps, we curate a real-world dataset, XCheck, comprising X posts with associated Community Notes and external contexts. We further propose the Automated Context-Corrective Note generation method, named ACCNote, which is a retrieval-augmented, multi-agent collaboration framework built on large vision-language models. Finally, we introduce a new evaluation metric, Context Helpfulness Score (CHS), that aligns with user study outcomes rather than relying on lexical overlap. Experiments on our XCheck dataset show that the proposed ACCNote improves both deception detection and note generation performance over baselines, and exceeds a commercial tool GPT5-mini. Together, our dataset, method, and metric advance practical automated generation of context-corrective notes toward more responsible online social networks.

Context Pruning for Coding Agents via Multi-Rubric Latent Reasoning

LLM-powered coding agents spend the majority of their token budget reading repository files, yet much of the retrieved code is irrelevant to the task at hand. Existing learned pruners compress this context with a single-objective sequence labeler, collapsing all facets of code relevance into one score and one transition matrix. We show that this formulation creates a modeling bottleneck: a single CRF transition prior must serve heterogeneous retention patterns, including contiguous semantic spans and sparse structural support lines. We propose LaMR (Latent Multi-Rubric), a structured pruning framework that decomposes code relevance into two interpretable quality dimensions, semantic evidence and dependency support, each modeled by a dedicated CRF with dimension-specific transition dynamics. A mixture-of-experts gating network dynamically weights the per-rubric emissions conditioned on the query, and a final CRF layer on the fused emissions produces the aggregate keep-or-prune decision. To supervise each dimension without additional annotation cost, we derive multi-rubric labels from the existing training corpus via AST-based program analysis, simultaneously denoising the teacher's binary labels. By effectively filtering distracting noise, LaMR frequently matches or even outperforms unpruned full-context baselines. Experiments on four benchmarks (SWE-Bench Verified, SWE-QA, LCC, LongCodeQA) show that LaMR wins 12 of 16 head-to-head multi-turn comparisons. It saves up to 31% more tokens on multi-turn agent tasks and improves Exact Match by up to +3.5 on single-turn tasks, while performance is frequently enhanced by denoising the context, and any remaining drops are marginal.

FF3R: Feedforward Feature 3D Reconstruction from Unconstrained views

Recent advances in vision foundation models have revolutionized geometry reconstruction and semantic understanding. Yet, most of the existing approaches treat these capabilities in isolation, leading to redundant pipelines and compounded errors. This paper introduces FF3R, a fully annotation-free feed-forward framework that unifies geometric and semantic reasoning from unconstrained multi-view image sequences. Unlike previous methods, FF3R does not require camera poses, depth maps, or semantic labels, relying solely on rendering supervision for RGB and feature maps, establishing a scalable paradigm for unified 3D reasoning. In addition, we address two critical challenges in feedforward feature reconstruction pipelines, namely global semantic inconsistency and local structural inconsistency, through two key innovations: (i) a Token-wise Fusion Module that enriches geometry tokens with semantic context via cross-attention, and (ii) a Semantic-Geometry Mutual Boosting mechanism combining geometry-guided feature warping for global consistency with semantic-aware voxelization for local coherence. Extensive experiments on ScanNet and DL3DV-10K demonstrate FF3R's superior performance in novel-view synthesis, open-vocabulary semantic segmentation, and depth estimation, with strong generalization to in-the-wild scenarios, paving the way for embodied intelligence systems that demand both spatial and semantic understanding.

Is GPT Powerful Enough to Analyze the Emotions of Memes?

Large Language Models (LLMs), representing a significant achievement in artificial intelligence (AI) research, have demonstrated their ability in a multitude of tasks. This project aims to explore the capabilities of GPT-3.5, a leading example of LLMs, in processing the sentiment analysis of Internet memes. Memes, which include both verbal and visual aspects, act as a powerful yet complex tool for expressing ideas and sentiments, demanding an understanding of societal norms and cultural contexts. Notably, the detection and moderation of hateful memes pose a significant challenge due to their implicit offensive nature. This project investigates GPT's proficiency in such subjective tasks, revealing its strengths and potential limitations. The tasks include the classification of meme sentiment, determination of humor type, and detection of implicit hate in memes. The performance evaluation, using datasets from SemEval-2020 Task 8 and Facebook hateful memes, offers a comparative understanding of GPT responses against human annotations. Despite GPT's remarkable progress, our findings underscore the challenges faced by these models in handling subjective tasks, which are rooted in their inherent limitations including contextual understanding, interpretation of implicit meanings, and data biases. This research contributes to the broader discourse on the applicability of AI in handling complex, context-dependent tasks, and offers valuable insights for future advancements.

AgenticScholar: Agentic Data Management with Pipeline Orchestration for Scholarly Corpora

Managing the rapidly growing scholarly corpus poses significant challenges in representation, reasoning, and efficient analysis. An ideal system should unify structured knowledge management, agentic planning, and interpretable execution to support diverse scholarly queries - from retrieval to knowledge discovery and generation - at scale. Unfortunately, existing RAG and document analytics systems fail to achieve all query types simultaneously. To this end, we propose AgenticScholar, an agentic scholarly data management system that integrates a structure-aware knowledge representation layer, an LLM-centric hybrid query planning layer, and a unified execution layer with composable operators. AgenticScholar autonomously translates natural language queries into executable DAG plans, enabling end-to-end reasoning over multi-modal scholarly data. Extensive experiments demonstrate that AgenticScholar significantly outperforms existing systems in effectiveness, efficiency, and interpretability, offering a practical foundation for future research on agentic scholarly data management.

Rewards-in-Context: Multi-objective Alignment of Foundation Models with Dynamic Preference Adjustment

We consider the problem of multi-objective alignment of foundation models with human preferences, which is a critical step towards helpful and harmless AI systems. However, it is generally costly and unstable to fine-tune large foundation models using reinforcement learning (RL), and the multi-dimensionality, heterogeneity, and conflicting nature of human preferences further complicate the alignment process. In this paper, we introduce Rewards-in-Context (RiC), which conditions the response of a foundation model on multiple rewards in its prompt context and applies supervised fine-tuning for alignment. The salient features of RiC are simplicity and adaptivity, as it only requires supervised fine-tuning of a single foundation model and supports dynamic adjustment for user preferences during inference time. Inspired by the analytical solution of an abstracted convex optimization problem, our dynamic inference-time adjustment method approaches the Pareto-optimal solution for multiple objectives. Empirical evidence demonstrates the efficacy of our method in aligning both Large Language Models (LLMs) and diffusion models to accommodate diverse rewards with only around 10% GPU hours compared with multi-objective RL baseline.

Few-Shot Generalized Category Discovery With Retrieval-Guided Decision Boundary Enhancement

While existing Generalized Category Discovery (GCD) models have achieved significant success, their performance with limited labeled samples and a small number of known categories remains largely unexplored. In this work, we introduce the task of Few-shot Generalized Category Discovery (FSGCD), aiming to achieve competitive performance in GCD tasks under conditions of known information scarcity. To tackle this challenge, we propose a decision boundary enhancement framework with affinity-based retrieval. Our framework is designed to learn the decision boundaries of known categories and transfer these boundaries to unknown categories. First, we use a decision boundary pre-training module to mitigate the overfitting of pre-trained information on known category boundaries and improve the learning of these decision boundaries using labeled samples. Second, we implement a two-stage retrieval-guided decision boundary optimization strategy. Specifically, this strategy further enhances the severely limited known boundaries by using affinity-retrieved pseudo-labeled samples. Then, these refined boundaries are applied to unknown clusters via guidance from affinity-based feature retrieval. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms existing methods on six public GCD benchmarks under the FSGCD setting. Locality Sensitive Hashing in Hyperbolic Space

Locality Sensitive Hashing (LSH) is one of the most popular techniques for approximate nearest-neighbor search in high-dimensional spaces, and has been studied extensively for Hamming, Euclidean, and spherical geometries. An $(r, cr, p_1, p_2)$-sensitive hash function enables approximate nearest neighbor search (i.e., returning a point within distance $cr$ from a query $q$ if there exists a point within distance $r$ from $q$) with space $O(n^{1+ρ})$ and query time $O(n^ρ)$ where $ρ=\frac{\log 1/p_1}{\log 1/p_2}$. But LSH for hyperbolic spaces $\mathbb{H}^d$ remains largely unexplored. In this work, we present the first LSH construction native to hyperbolic space. For the hyperbolic plane $(d=2)$, we show a construction achieving $ρ\leq 1/c$, based on the hyperplane rounding scheme. For general hyperbolic spaces $(d \geq 3)$, we use dimension reduction from $\mathbb{H}^d$ to $\mathbb{H}^2$ and the 2D hyperbolic LSH to get $ρ\leq 1.59/c$. On the lower bound side, we show that the lower bound on $ρ$ of Euclidean LSH extends to the hyperbolic setting via local isometry, therefore giving $ρ\geq 1/c^2$.

Sat3R: Satellite DSM Reconstruction via RPC-Aware Depth Fine-tuning

Accurate Digital Surface Model (DSM) reconstruction from satellite imagery is critical for applications such as disaster response, urban planning, and large-scale geographic mapping. Existing approaches face a fundamental trade-off: optimization-based methods achieve strong accuracy but require hours of per-scene computation, while generalizable geometry foundation models offer near-instant inference but fail to generalize to satellite imagery due to the domain gap introduced by the Rational Polynomial Camera (RPC) model and mismatched depth scale distributions. We present Sat3R, a feed-forward framework that bridges this gap via RPC-aware metric depth fine-tuning of Depth Anything V2 using the Scale-Invariant Logarithmic (SiLog) loss. By constructing physically consistent pseudo depth supervision from RPC geometry, Sat3R adapts a monocular depth foundation model to the satellite domain without per-scene optimization. Experiments on the DFC2019 benchmark demonstrate that Sat3R reduces MAE by 38% over zero-shot feed-forward baselines and achieves competitive accuracy against optimization-based methods, while delivering over 300x speedup. Sat3R demonstrates that feed-forward models, when properly adapted to the satellite domain, can match optimization-based accuracy at a fraction of the computational cost, paving the way for practical large-scale satellite DSM reconstruction.

FlexMap: Generalized HD Map Construction from Flexible Camera Configurations

High-definition (HD) maps provide essential semantic information of road structures for autonomous driving systems, yet current HD map construction methods require calibrated multi-camera setups and either implicit or explicit 2D-to-BEV transformations, making them fragile when sensors fail or camera configurations vary across vehicle fleets. We introduce FlexMap, unlike prior methods that are fixed to a specific N-camera rig, our approach adapts to variable camera configurations without any architectural changes or per-configuration retraining. Our key innovation eliminates explicit geometric projections by using a geometry-aware foundation model with cross-frame attention to implicitly encode 3D scene understanding in feature space. FlexMap features two core components: a spatial-temporal enhancement module that separates cross-view spatial reasoning from temporal dynamics, and a camera-aware decoder with latent camera tokens, enabling view-adaptive attention without the need for projection matrices. Experiments demonstrate that FlexMap outperforms existing methods across multiple configurations while maintaining robustness to missing views and sensor variations, enabling more practical real-world deployment.

Demystifying OPD: Length Inflation and Stabilization Strategies for Large Language Models

On-policy distillation (OPD) trains student models under their own induced distribution while leveraging supervision from stronger teachers. We identify a failure mode of OPD: as training progresses, on-policy rollouts can undergo abrupt length inflation, causing truncated trajectories to dominate the training data. This truncation collapse coincides with abrupt repetition saturation and induces biased gradient signals, leading to severe training instability and sharp degradation in validation performance. We attribute this problem to the interaction between student-induced data collection and the distillation objective, which implicitly favors long and repetitive rollouts. To address this issue, we propose StableOPD, a stabilized OPD framework that combines a reference-based divergence constraint with rollout mixture distillation. These together mitigate repetition-induced length inflation and further stabilize OPD training. Across multiple math reasoning datasets, our approach prevents truncation collapse, stabilizes training dynamics, and improves performance by 7.2% on average.

AutoL2S: Auto Long-Short Reasoning for Efficient Large Language Models

The reasoning-capable large language models (LLMs) demonstrate strong performance on complex reasoning tasks but often suffer from overthinking, generating unnecessarily long chain-of-thought (CoT) reasoning paths for easy reasoning questions, thereby increasing inference cost and latency. Recent approaches attempt to address this challenge by manually deciding when to apply long or short reasoning. However, they lack the flexibility to adapt CoT length dynamically based on question complexity. In this paper, we propose Auto Long-Short Reasoning (AutoL2S), a dynamic and model-agnostic framework that enables LLMs to dynamically compress their generated reasoning path based on the complexity of the reasoning question. AutoL2S enables a learned paradigm, in which LLMs themselves can decide when longer reasoning is necessary and when shorter reasoning suffices, by training on data annotated with our proposed method, which includes both long and short CoT paths and a special <EASY> token. We then use <EASY> token to indicate when the model can skip generating lengthy CoT reasoning. This proposed annotation strategy can enhance the LLMs' ability to generate shorter CoT reasoning paths with improved quality after training. Extensive evaluation results show that AutoL2S reduces the length of reasoning generation by up to 57% without compromising performance, demonstrating the effectiveness of AutoL2S for scalable and efficient LLM reasoning.

Neuc-MDS: Non-Euclidean Multidimensional Scaling Through Bilinear Forms

We introduce Non-Euclidean-MDS (Neuc-MDS), an extension of classical Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) that accommodates non-Euclidean and non-metric inputs. The main idea is to generalize the standard inner product to symmetric bilinear forms to utilize the negative eigenvalues of dissimilarity Gram matrices. Neuc-MDS efficiently optimizes the choice of (both positive and negative) eigenvalues of the dissimilarity Gram matrix to reduce STRESS, the sum of squared pairwise error. We provide an in-depth error analysis and proofs of the optimality in minimizing lower bounds of STRESS. We demonstrate Neuc-MDS's ability to address limitations of classical MDS raised by prior research, and test it on various synthetic and real-world datasets in comparison with both linear and non-linear dimension reduction methods.

UIBDiffusion: Universal Imperceptible Backdoor Attack for Diffusion Models

Recent studies show that diffusion models (DMs) are vulnerable to backdoor attacks. Existing backdoor attacks impose unconcealed triggers (e.g., a gray box and eyeglasses) that contain evident patterns, rendering remarkable attack effects yet easy detection upon human inspection and defensive algorithms. While it is possible to improve stealthiness by reducing the strength of the backdoor, doing so can significantly compromise its generality and effectiveness. In this paper, we propose UIBDiffusion, the universal imperceptible backdoor attack for diffusion models, which allows us to achieve superior attack and generation performance while evading state-of-the-art defenses. We propose a novel trigger generation approach based on universal adversarial perturbations (UAPs) and reveal that such perturbations, which are initially devised for fooling pre-trained discriminative models, can be adapted as potent imperceptible backdoor triggers for DMs. We evaluate UIBDiffusion on multiple types of DMs with different kinds of samplers across various datasets and targets. Experimental results demonstrate that UIBDiffusion brings three advantages: 1) Universality, the imperceptible trigger is universal (i.e., image and model agnostic) where a single trigger is effective to any images and all diffusion models with different samplers; 2) Utility, it achieves comparable generation quality (e.g., FID) and even better attack success rate (i.e., ASR) at low poison rates compared to the prior works; and 3) Undetectability, UIBDiffusion is plausible to human perception and can bypass Elijah and TERD, the SOTA defenses against backdoors for DMs. We will release our backdoor triggers and code.

Unsupervised Microscopy Video Denoising

In this paper, we introduce a novel unsupervised network to denoise microscopy videos featured by image sequences captured by a fixed location microscopy camera. Specifically, we propose a DeepTemporal Interpolation method, leveraging a temporal signal filter integrated into the bottom CNN layers, to restore microscopy videos corrupted by unknown noise types. Our unsupervised denoising architecture is distinguished by its ability to adapt to multiple noise conditions without the need for pre-existing noise distribution knowledge, addressing a significant challenge in real-world medical applications. Furthermore, we evaluate our denoising framework using both real microscopy recordings and simulated data, validating our outperforming video denoising performance across a broad spectrum of noise scenarios. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our unsupervised model consistently outperforms state-of-the-art supervised and unsupervised video denoising techniques, proving especially effective for microscopy videos.

Integrating Fairness and Model Pruning Through Bi-level Optimization

Deep neural networks have achieved exceptional results across a range of applications. As the demand for efficient and sparse deep learning models escalates, the significance of model compression, particularly pruning, is increasingly recognized. Traditional pruning methods, however, can unintentionally intensify algorithmic biases, leading to unequal prediction outcomes in critical applications and raising concerns about the dilemma of pruning practices and social justice. To tackle this challenge, we introduce a novel concept of fair model pruning, which involves developing a sparse model that adheres to fairness criteria. In particular, we propose a framework to jointly optimize the pruning mask and weight update processes with fairness constraints. This framework is engineered to compress models that maintain performance while ensuring fairness in a unified process. To this end, we formulate the fair pruning problem as a novel constrained bi-level optimization task and derive efficient and effective solving strategies. We design experiments across various datasets and scenarios to validate our proposed method. Our empirical analysis contrasts our framework with several mainstream pruning strategies, emphasizing our method's superiority in maintaining model fairness, performance, and efficiency.

Directly Denoising Diffusion Models

In this paper, we present the Directly Denoising Diffusion Model (DDDM): a simple and generic approach for generating realistic images with few-step sampling, while multistep sampling is still preserved for better performance. DDDMs require no delicately designed samplers nor distillation on pre-trained distillation models. DDDMs train the diffusion model conditioned on an estimated target that was generated from previous training iterations of its own. To generate images, samples generated from the previous time step are also taken into consideration, guiding the generation process iteratively. We further propose Pseudo-LPIPS, a novel metric loss that is more robust to various values of hyperparameter. Despite its simplicity, the proposed approach can achieve strong performance in benchmark datasets. Our model achieves FID scores of 2.57 and 2.33 on CIFAR-10 in one-step and two-step sampling respectively, surpassing those obtained from GANs and distillation-based models. By extending the sampling to 1000 steps, we further reduce FID score to 1.79, aligning with state-of-the-art methods in the literature. For ImageNet 64x64, our approach stands as a competitive contender against leading models.

Dependency-Guided Repository-Level C-to-Rust Translation with Reinforcement Alignment

Automating C-to-Rust migration is critical for improving software security without sacrificing performance. Traditional rule-based methods struggle with diverse C idioms, often producing rigid and unidiomatic Rust code. Large Language Models (LLMs), trained on massive code corpora, offer a promising alternative by leveraging cross-language generalization to generate more idiomatic and maintainable Rust code. However, several challenges remain. First, existing LLM-based approaches fail to handle cross-file dependencies effectively, either ignoring them or including entire files as context, which limits accurate dependency modeling. Second, complex dependencies and structured inputs and outputs make it difficult to verify syntactic correctness and functional equivalence at the repository level. Third, the lack of large-scale C-Rust parallel data constrains model performance. We propose DepTrans, a framework that combines model capability enhancement with structured inference. DepTrans introduces Reinforcement-Aligned Syntax Training to improve generation quality through multi-task fine-tuning and feedback-driven reinforcement learning. It further applies Dependency-Guided Iterative Refinement to capture fine-grained cross-file dependencies and iteratively refine generated Rust code. We construct a dataset of 85k training samples and a benchmark of 145 repository-level instances. Experiments show that DepTrans achieves a 60.7 percent compilation success rate and 43.5 percent computational accuracy, outperforming the strongest baseline by 22.8 and 17.3 percentage points. It also successfully builds 7 of 15 industrial C projects, demonstrating its practical potential.

MolLangBench: A Comprehensive Benchmark for Language-Prompted Molecular Structure Recognition, Editing, and Generation

Precise recognition, editing, and generation of molecules are essential prerequisites for both chemists and AI systems tackling various chemical tasks. We present MolLangBench, a comprehensive benchmark designed to evaluate fundamental molecule-language interface tasks: language-prompted molecular structure recognition, editing, and generation. To ensure high-quality, unambiguous, and deterministic outputs, we construct the recognition tasks using automated cheminformatics tools, and curate editing and generation tasks through rigorous expert annotation and validation. MolLangBench supports the evaluation of models that interface language with different molecular representations, including linear strings, molecular images, and molecular graphs. Evaluations of state-of-the-art models reveal significant limitations: the strongest model (GPT-5) achieves $86.2\%$ and $85.5\%$ accuracy on recognition and editing tasks, which are intuitively simple for humans, and performs even worse on the generation task, reaching only $43.0\%$ accuracy. These results highlight the shortcomings of current AI systems in handling even preliminary molecular recognition and manipulation tasks. We hope MolLangBench will catalyze further research toward more effective and reliable AI systems for chemical applications.

Integration Flow Models

Ordinary differential equation (ODE) based generative models have emerged as a powerful approach for producing high-quality samples in many applications. However, the ODE-based methods either suffer the discretization error of numerical solvers of ODE, which restricts the quality of samples when only a few NFEs are used, or struggle with training instability. In this paper, we proposed Integration Flow, which directly learns the integral of ODE-based trajectory paths without solving the ODE functions. Moreover, Integration Flow explicitly incorporates the target state $\mathbf{x}_0$ as the anchor state in guiding the reverse-time dynamics. We have theoretically proven this can contribute to both stability and accuracy. To the best of our knowledge, Integration Flow is the first model with a unified structure to estimate ODE-based generative models and the first to show the exact straightness of 1-Rectified Flow without reflow. Through theoretical analysis and empirical evaluations, we show that Integration Flows achieve improved performance when it is applied to existing ODE-based models, such as diffusion models, Rectified Flows, and PFGM++. Specifically, Integration Flow achieves one-step generation on CIFAR10 with FIDs of 2.86 for the Variance Exploding (VE) diffusion model, 3.36 for rectified flow without reflow, and 2.91 for PFGM++; and on ImageNet with FIDs of 4.09 for VE diffusion model, 4.35 for rectified flow without reflow and 4.15 for PFGM++.

Latent Radiance Fields with 3D-aware 2D Representations

Latent 3D reconstruction has shown great promise in empowering 3D semantic understanding and 3D generation by distilling 2D features into the 3D space. However, existing approaches struggle with the domain gap between 2D feature space and 3D representations, resulting in degraded rendering performance. To address this challenge, we propose a novel framework that integrates 3D awareness into the 2D latent space. The framework consists of three stages: (1) a correspondence-aware autoencoding method that enhances the 3D consistency of 2D latent representations, (2) a latent radiance field (LRF) that lifts these 3D-aware 2D representations into 3D space, and (3) a VAE-Radiance Field (VAE-RF) alignment strategy that improves image decoding from the rendered 2D representations. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art latent 3D reconstruction approaches in terms of synthesis performance and cross-dataset generalizability across diverse indoor and outdoor scenes. To our knowledge, this is the first work showing the radiance field representations constructed from 2D latent representations can yield photorealistic 3D reconstruction performance.

Decomposition-Driven Multi-Table Retrieval and Reasoning for Numerical Question Answering

In this paper, we study the problem of numerical multi-table question answering (MTQA) over large-scale table collections (e.g., online data repositories). This task is essential in many analytical applications. Existing MTQA solutions, such as text-to-SQL or open-domain MTQA methods, are designed for databases and struggle when applied to large-scale table collections. The key limitations include: (1) Limited support for complex table relationships; (2) Ineffective retrieval of relevant tables at scale; (3) Inaccurate answer generation. To overcome these limitations, we propose DMRAL, a Decomposition-driven Multi-table Retrieval and Answering framework for MTQA over large-scale table collections, which consists of: (1) constructing a table relationship graph to capture complex relationships among tables; (2) Table-Aligned Question Decomposer and Coverage-Aware Retriever, which jointly enable the effective identification of relevant tables from large-scale corpora by enhancing the question decomposition quality and maximizing the question coverage of retrieved tables; and (3) Sub-question Guided Reasoner, which produces correct answers by progressively generating and refining the reasoning program based on sub-questions. Experiments on two MTQA datasets demonstrate that DMRAL significantly outperforms existing state-of-the-art MTQA methods, with an average improvement of 24% in table retrieval and 55% in answer accuracy.

ShadowGS: Shadow-Aware 3D Gaussian Splatting for Satellite Imagery

3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has emerged as a novel paradigm for 3D reconstruction from satellite imagery. However, in multi-temporal satellite images, prevalent shadows exhibit significant inconsistencies due to varying illumination conditions. To address this, we propose ShadowGS, a novel framework based on 3DGS. It leverages a physics-based rendering equation from remote sensing, combined with an efficient ray marching technique, to precisely model geometrically consistent shadows while maintaining efficient rendering. Additionally, it effectively disentangles different illumination components and apparent attributes in the scene. Furthermore, we introduce a shadow consistency constraint that significantly enhances the geometric accuracy of 3D reconstruction. We also incorporate a novel shadow map prior to improve performance with sparse-view inputs. Extensive experiments demonstrate that ShadowGS outperforms current state-of-the-art methods in shadow decoupling accuracy, 3D reconstruction precision, and novel view synthesis quality, with only a few minutes of training. ShadowGS exhibits robust performance across various settings, including RGB, pansharpened, and sparse-view satellite inputs.

FairAgent: Democratizing Fairness-Aware Machine Learning with LLM-Powered Agents

Training fair and unbiased machine learning models is crucial for high-stakes applications, yet it presents significant challenges. Effective bias mitigation requires deep expertise in fairness definitions, metrics, data preprocessing, and machine learning techniques. In addition, the complex process of balancing model performance with fairness requirements while properly handling sensitive attributes makes fairness-aware model development inaccessible to many practitioners. To address these challenges, we introduce FairAgent, an LLM-powered automated system that significantly simplifies fairness-aware model development. FairAgent eliminates the need for deep technical expertise by automatically analyzing datasets for potential biases, handling data preprocessing and feature engineering, and implementing appropriate bias mitigation strategies based on user requirements. Our experiments demonstrate that FairAgent achieves significant performance improvements while significantly reducing development time and expertise requirements, making fairness-aware machine learning more accessible to practitioners.

DisPatch: Disarming Adversarial Patches in Object Detection with Diffusion Models

Object detection is fundamental to various real-world applications, such as security monitoring and surveillance video analysis. Despite their advancements, state-of-theart object detectors are still vulnerable to adversarial patch attacks, which can be easily applied to real-world objects to either conceal actual items or create non-existent ones, leading to severe consequences. Given the current diversity of adversarial patch attacks and potential unknown threats, an ideal defense method should be effective, generalizable, and robust against adaptive attacks. In this work, we introduce DISPATCH, the first diffusion-based defense framework for object detection. Unlike previous works that aim to "detect and remove" adversarial patches, DISPATCH adopts a "regenerate and rectify" strategy, leveraging generative models to disarm attack effects while preserving the integrity of the input image. Specifically, we utilize the in-distribution generative power of diffusion models to regenerate the entire image, aligning it with benign data. A rectification process is then employed to identify and replace adversarial regions with their regenerated benign counterparts. DISPATCH is attack-agnostic and requires no prior knowledge of the existing patches. Extensive experiments across multiple detectors and attacks demonstrate that DISPATCH consistently outperforms state-of-the-art defenses on both hiding attacks and creating attacks, achieving the best overall mAP.5 score of 89.3% on hiding attacks, and lowering the attack success rate to 24.8% on untargeted creating attacks. Moreover, it maintains strong robustness against adaptive attacks, making it a practical and reliable defense for object detection systems.

Implicit Neural Representation for Video Restoration

High-resolution (HR) videos play a crucial role in many computer vision applications. Although existing video restoration (VR) methods can significantly enhance video quality by exploiting temporal information across video frames, they are typically trained for fixed upscaling factors and lack the flexibility to handle scales or degradations beyond their training distribution. In this paper, we introduce VR-INR, a novel video restoration approach based on Implicit Neural Representations (INRs) that is trained only on a single upscaling factor ($\times 4$) but generalizes effectively to arbitrary, unseen super-resolution scales at test time. Notably, VR-INR also performs zero-shot denoising on noisy input, despite never having seen noisy data during training. Our method employs a hierarchical spatial-temporal-texture encoding framework coupled with multi-resolution implicit hash encoding, enabling adaptive decoding of high-resolution and noise-suppressed frames from low-resolution inputs at any desired magnification. Experimental results show that VR-INR consistently maintains high-quality reconstructions at unseen scales and noise during training, significantly outperforming state-of-the-art approaches in sharpness, detail preservation, and denoising efficacy.

MiCRo: Mixture Modeling and Context-aware Routing for Personalized Preference Learning

Reward modeling is a key step in building safe foundation models when applying reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF) to align Large Language Models (LLMs). However, reward modeling based on the Bradley-Terry (BT) model assumes a global reward function, failing to capture the inherently diverse and heterogeneous human preferences. Hence, such oversimplification limits LLMs from supporting personalization and pluralistic alignment. Theoretically, we show that when human preferences follow a mixture distribution of diverse subgroups, a single BT model has an irreducible error. While existing solutions, such as multi-objective learning with fine-grained annotations, help address this issue, they are costly and constrained by predefined attributes, failing to fully capture the richness of human values. In this work, we introduce MiCRo, a two-stage framework that enhances personalized preference learning by leveraging large-scale binary preference datasets without requiring explicit fine-grained annotations. In the first stage, MiCRo introduces context-aware mixture modeling approach to capture diverse human preferences. In the second stage, MiCRo integrates an online routing strategy that dynamically adapts mixture weights based on specific context to resolve ambiguity, allowing for efficient and scalable preference adaptation with minimal additional supervision. Experiments on multiple preference datasets demonstrate that MiCRo effectively captures diverse human preferences and significantly improves downstream personalization.

Implicit Neural Representation for Video and Image Super-Resolution

We present a novel approach for super-resolution that utilizes implicit neural representation (INR) to effectively reconstruct and enhance low-resolution videos and images. By leveraging the capacity of neural networks to implicitly encode spatial and temporal features, our method facilitates high-resolution reconstruction using only low-resolution inputs and a 3D high-resolution grid. This results in an efficient solution for both image and video super-resolution. Our proposed method, SR-INR, maintains consistent details across frames and images, achieving impressive temporal stability without relying on the computationally intensive optical flow or motion estimation typically used in other video super-resolution techniques. The simplicity of our approach contrasts with the complexity of many existing methods, making it both effective and efficient. Experimental evaluations show that SR-INR delivers results on par with or superior to state-of-the-art super-resolution methods, while maintaining a more straightforward structure and reduced computational demands. These findings highlight the potential of implicit neural representations as a powerful tool for reconstructing high-quality, temporally consistent video and image signals from low-resolution data.

V-Express: Conditional Dropout for Progressive Training of Portrait Video Generation

In the field of portrait video generation, the use of single images to generate portrait videos has become increasingly prevalent. A common approach involves leveraging generative models to enhance adapters for controlled generation. However, control signals (e.g., text, audio, reference image, pose, depth map, etc.) can vary in strength. Among these, weaker conditions often struggle to be effective due to interference from stronger conditions, posing a challenge in balancing these conditions. In our work on portrait video generation, we identified audio signals as particularly weak, often overshadowed by stronger signals such as facial pose and reference image. However, direct training with weak signals often leads to difficulties in convergence. To address this, we propose V-Express, a simple method that balances different control signals through the progressive training and the conditional dropout operation. Our method gradually enables effective control by weak conditions, thereby achieving generation capabilities that simultaneously take into account the facial pose, reference image, and audio. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can effectively generate portrait videos controlled by audio. Furthermore, a potential solution is provided for the simultaneous and effective use of conditions of varying strengths.

Effectively Prompting Small-sized Language Models for Cross-lingual Tasks via Winning Tickets

Current soft prompt methods yield limited performance when applied to small-sized models (fewer than a billion parameters). Deep prompt-tuning, which entails prepending parameters in each layer for enhanced efficacy, presents a solution for prompting small-sized models, albeit requiring carefully designed implementation. In this paper, we introduce the Lottery Ticket Prompt-learning (LTP) framework that integrates winning tickets with soft prompts. The LTP offers a simpler implementation and requires only a one-time execution. We demonstrate LTP on cross-lingual tasks, where prior works rely on external tools like human-designed multilingual templates and bilingual dictionaries, which may not be feasible in a low-resource regime. Specifically, we select a subset of parameters that have been changed the most during the fine-tuning with the Masked Language Modeling objective. Then, we prepend soft prompts to the original pre-trained language model and only update the selected parameters together with prompt-related parameters when adapting to the downstream tasks. We verify the effectiveness of our LTP framework on cross-lingual tasks, specifically targeting low-resource languages. Our approach outperforms the baselines by only updating 20\% of the original parameters.

Understanding and Measuring Robustness of Multimodal Learning

The modern digital world is increasingly becoming multimodal. Although multimodal learning has recently revolutionized the state-of-the-art performance in multimodal tasks, relatively little is known about the robustness of multimodal learning in an adversarial setting. In this paper, we introduce a comprehensive measurement of the adversarial robustness of multimodal learning by focusing on the fusion of input modalities in multimodal models, via a framework called MUROAN (MUltimodal RObustness ANalyzer). We first present a unified view of multimodal models in MUROAN and identify the fusion mechanism of multimodal models as a key vulnerability. We then introduce a new type of multimodal adversarial attacks called decoupling attack in MUROAN that aims to compromise multimodal models by decoupling their fused modalities. We leverage the decoupling attack of MUROAN to measure several state-of-the-art multimodal models and find that the multimodal fusion mechanism in all these models is vulnerable to decoupling attacks. We especially demonstrate that, in the worst case, the decoupling attack of MUROAN achieves an attack success rate of 100% by decoupling just 1.16% of the input space. Finally, we show that traditional adversarial training is insufficient to improve the robustness of multimodal models with respect to decoupling attacks. We hope our findings encourage researchers to pursue improving the robustness of multimodal learning.

Sk-Unet Model with Fourier Domain for Mitosis Detection

Mitotic count is the most important morphological feature of breast cancer grading. Many deep learning-based methods have been proposed but suffer from domain shift. In this work, we construct a Fourier-based segmentation model for mitosis detection to address the problem. Swapping the low-frequency spectrum of source and target images is shown effective to alleviate the discrepancy between different scanners. Our Fourier-based segmentation method can achieve F1 with 0.7456 on the preliminary test set.

MHER: Model-based Hindsight Experience Replay

Solving multi-goal reinforcement learning (RL) problems with sparse rewards is generally challenging. Existing approaches have utilized goal relabeling on collected experiences to alleviate issues raised from sparse rewards. However, these methods are still limited in efficiency and cannot make full use of experiences. In this paper, we propose Model-based Hindsight Experience Replay (MHER), which exploits experiences more efficiently by leveraging environmental dynamics to generate virtual achieved goals. Replacing original goals with virtual goals generated from interaction with a trained dynamics model leads to a novel relabeling method, model-based relabeling (MBR). Based on MBR, MHER performs both reinforcement learning and supervised learning for efficient policy improvement. Theoretically, we also prove the supervised part in MHER, i.e., goal-conditioned supervised learning with MBR data, optimizes a lower bound on the multi-goal RL objective. Experimental results in several point-based tasks and simulated robotics environments show that MHER achieves significantly higher sample efficiency than previous model-free and model-based multi-goal methods.

A Coarse-to-Fine Instance Segmentation Network with Learning Boundary Representation

Boundary-based instance segmentation has drawn much attention since of its attractive efficiency. However, existing methods suffer from the difficulty in long-distance regression. In this paper, we propose a coarse-to-fine module to address the problem. Approximate boundary points are generated at the coarse stage and then features of these points are sampled and fed to a refined regressor for fine prediction. It is end-to-end trainable since differential sampling operation is well supported in the module. Furthermore, we design a holistic boundary-aware branch and introduce instance-agnostic supervision to assist regression. Equipped with ResNet-101, our approach achieves 31.7\% mask AP on COCO dataset with single-scale training and testing, outperforming the baseline 1.3\% mask AP with less than 1\% additional parameters and GFLOPs. Experiments also show that our proposed method achieves competitive performance compared to existing boundary-based methods with a lightweight design and a simple pipeline.

A systematic mapping study on security countermeasures of in-vehicle communication systems

The innovations of vehicle connectivity have been increasing dramatically to enhance the safety and user experience of driving, while the rising numbers of interfaces to the external world also bring security threats to vehicles. Many security countermeasures have been proposed and discussed to protect the systems and services against attacks. To provide an overview of the current states in this research field, we conducted a systematic mapping study on the topic area "security countermeasures of in-vehicle communication systems". 279 papers are identified based on the defined study identification strategy and criteria. We discussed four research questions related to the security countermeasures, validation methods, publication patterns, and research trends and gaps based on the extracted and classified data. Finally, we evaluated the validity threats, the study identification results, and the whole mapping process. We found that the studies in this topic area are increasing rapidly in recent years. However, there are still gaps in various subtopics like automotive Ethernet security, anomaly reaction, and so on. This study reviews the target field not only related to research findings but also research activities, which can help identify research gaps at a high level and inspire new ideas for future work.

Bias-reduced Multi-step Hindsight Experience Replay for Efficient Multi-goal Reinforcement Learning

Multi-goal reinforcement learning is widely applied in planning and robot manipulation. Two main challenges in multi-goal reinforcement learning are sparse rewards and sample inefficiency. Hindsight Experience Replay (HER) aims to tackle the two challenges via goal relabeling. However, HER-related works still need millions of samples and a huge computation. In this paper, we propose Multi-step Hindsight Experience Replay (MHER), incorporating multi-step relabeled returns based on $n$-step relabeling to improve sample efficiency. Despite the advantages of $n$-step relabeling, we theoretically and experimentally prove the off-policy $n$-step bias introduced by $n$-step relabeling may lead to poor performance in many environments. To address the above issue, two bias-reduced MHER algorithms, MHER($λ$) and Model-based MHER (MMHER) are presented. MHER($λ$) exploits the $λ$ return while MMHER benefits from model-based value expansions. Experimental results on numerous multi-goal robotic tasks show that our solutions can successfully alleviate off-policy $n$-step bias and achieve significantly higher sample efficiency than HER and Curriculum-guided HER with little additional computation beyond HER.

Multi-level Knowledge Distillation via Knowledge Alignment and Correlation

Knowledge distillation (KD) has become an important technique for model compression and knowledge transfer. In this work, we first perform a comprehensive analysis of the knowledge transferred by different KD methods. We demonstrate that traditional KD methods, which minimize the KL divergence of softmax outputs between networks, are related to the knowledge alignment of an individual sample only. Meanwhile, recent contrastive learning-based KD methods mainly transfer relational knowledge between different samples, namely, knowledge correlation. While it is important to transfer the full knowledge from teacher to student, we introduce the Multi-level Knowledge Distillation (MLKD) by effectively considering both knowledge alignment and correlation. MLKD is task-agnostic and model-agnostic, and can easily transfer knowledge from supervised or self-supervised pretrained teachers. We show that MLKD can improve the reliability and transferability of learned representations. Experiments demonstrate that MLKD outperforms other state-of-the-art methods on a large number of experimental settings including different (a) pretraining strategies (b) network architectures (c) datasets (d) tasks.

Second-order Neural Network Training Using Complex-step Directional Derivative

While the superior performance of second-order optimization methods such as Newton's method is well known, they are hardly used in practice for deep learning because neither assembling the Hessian matrix nor calculating its inverse is feasible for large-scale problems. Existing second-order methods resort to various diagonal or low-rank approximations of the Hessian, which often fail to capture necessary curvature information to generate a substantial improvement. On the other hand, when training becomes batch-based (i.e., stochastic), noisy second-order information easily contaminates the training procedure unless expensive safeguard is employed. In this paper, we adopt a numerical algorithm for second-order neural network training. We tackle the practical obstacle of Hessian calculation by using the complex-step finite difference (CSFD) -- a numerical procedure adding an imaginary perturbation to the function for derivative computation. CSFD is highly robust, efficient, and accurate (as accurate as the analytic result). This method allows us to literally apply any known second-order optimization methods for deep learning training. Based on it, we design an effective Newton Krylov procedure. The key mechanism is to terminate the stochastic Krylov iteration as soon as a disturbing direction is found so that unnecessary computation can be avoided. During the optimization, we monitor the approximation error in the Taylor expansion to adjust the step size. This strategy combines advantages of line search and trust region methods making our method preserves good local and global convergency at the same time. We have tested our methods in various deep learning tasks. The experiments show that our method outperforms exiting methods, and it often converges one-order faster. We believe our method will inspire a wide-range of new algorithms for deep learning and numerical optimization.
