Accurate Virus Identification with Interpretable Raman Signatures by Machine LearningJiarong Ye, Yin-Ting Yeh, Yuan Xue et al.
Rapid identification of newly emerging or circulating viruses is an important first step toward managing the public health response to potential outbreaks. A portable virus capture device coupled with label-free Raman Spectroscopy holds the promise of fast detection by rapidly obtaining the Raman signature of a virus followed by a machine learning approach applied to recognize the virus based on its Raman spectrum, which is used as a fingerprint. We present such a machine learning approach for analyzing Raman spectra of human and avian viruses. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier specifically designed for spectral data achieves very high accuracy for a variety of virus type or subtype identification tasks. In particular, it achieves 99% accuracy for classifying influenza virus type A vs. type B, 96% accuracy for classifying four subtypes of influenza A, 95% accuracy for differentiating enveloped and non-enveloped viruses, and 99% accuracy for differentiating avian coronavirus (infectious bronchitis virus, IBV) from other avian viruses. Furthermore, interpretation of neural net responses in the trained CNN model using a full-gradient algorithm highlights Raman spectral ranges that are most important to virus identification. By correlating ML-selected salient Raman ranges with the signature ranges of known biomolecules and chemical functional groups (for example, amide, amino acid, carboxylic acid), we verify that our ML model effectively recognizes the Raman signatures of proteins, lipids and other vital functional groups present in different viruses and uses a weighted combination of these signatures to identify viruses.

EllipsoNet: Deep-learning-enabled optical ellipsometry for complex thin filmsZiyang Wang, Yuxuan Cosmi Lin, Kunyan Zhang et al.
Optical spectroscopy is indispensable for research and development in nanoscience and nanotechnology, microelectronics, energy, and advanced manufacturing. Advanced optical spectroscopy tools often require both specifically designed high-end instrumentation and intricate data analysis techniques. Beyond the common analytical tools, deep learning methods are well suited for interpreting high-dimensional and complicated spectroscopy data. They offer great opportunities to extract subtle and deep information about optical properties of materials with simpler optical setups, which would otherwise require sophisticated instrumentation. In this work, we propose a computational ellipsometry approach based on a conventional tabletop optical microscope and a deep learning model called EllipsoNet. Without any prior knowledge about the multilayer substrates, EllipsoNet can predict the complex refractive indices of thin films on top of these nontrivial substrates from experimentally measured optical reflectance spectra with high accuracies. This task was not feasible previously with traditional reflectometry or ellipsometry methods. Fundamental physical principles, such as the Kramers-Kronig relations, are spontaneously learned by the model without any further training. This approach enables in-operando optical characterization of functional materials within complex photonic structures or optoelectronic devices.
Uncertainty Estimation for 3D Dense Prediction via Cross-Point EmbeddingsKaiwen Cai, Chris Xiaoxuan Lu, Xiaowei Huang
Dense prediction tasks are common for 3D point clouds, but the uncertainties inherent in massive points and their embeddings have long been ignored. In this work, we present CUE, a novel uncertainty estimation method for dense prediction tasks in 3D point clouds. Inspired by metric learning, the key idea of CUE is to explore cross-point embeddings upon a conventional 3D dense prediction pipeline. Specifically, CUE involves building a probabilistic embedding model and then enforcing metric alignments of massive points in the embedding space. We also propose CUE+, which enhances CUE by explicitly modeling crosspoint dependencies in the covariance matrix. We demonstrate that both CUE and CUE+ are generic and effective for uncertainty estimation in 3D point clouds with two different tasks: (1) in 3D geometric feature learning we for the first time obtain wellcalibrated uncertainty, and (2) in semantic segmentation we reduce uncertainty's Expected Calibration Error of the state-of-the-arts by 16.5%. All uncertainties are estimated without compromising predictive performance.

RecGPT-V2 Technical ReportChao Yi, Dian Chen, Gaoyang Guo et al.
Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable potential in transforming recommender systems from implicit behavioral pattern matching to explicit intent reasoning. While RecGPT-V1 successfully pioneered this paradigm by integrating LLM-based reasoning into user interest mining and item tag prediction, it suffers from four fundamental limitations: (1) computational inefficiency and cognitive redundancy across multiple reasoning routes; (2) insufficient explanation diversity in fixed-template generation; (3) limited generalization under supervised learning paradigms; and (4) simplistic outcome-focused evaluation that fails to match human standards. To address these challenges, we present RecGPT-V2 with four key innovations. First, a Hierarchical Multi-Agent System restructures intent reasoning through coordinated collaboration, eliminating cognitive duplication while enabling diverse intent coverage. Combined with Hybrid Representation Inference that compresses user-behavior contexts, our framework reduces GPU consumption by 60% and improves exclusive recall from 9.39% to 10.99%. Second, a Meta-Prompting framework dynamically generates contextually adaptive prompts, improving explanation diversity by +7.3%. Third, constrained reinforcement learning mitigates multi-reward conflicts, achieving +24.1% improvement in tag prediction and +13.0% in explanation acceptance. Fourth, an Agent-as-a-Judge framework decomposes assessment into multi-step reasoning, improving human preference alignment. Online A/B tests on Taobao demonstrate significant improvements: +2.98% CTR, +3.71% IPV, +2.19% TV, and +11.46% NER. RecGPT-V2 establishes both the technical feasibility and commercial viability of deploying LLM-powered intent reasoning at scale, bridging the gap between cognitive exploration and industrial utility.

Data Augmentation for Continual RL via Adversarial Gradient Episodic MemorySihao Wu, Xingyu Zhao, Xiaowei Huang
Data efficiency of learning, which plays a key role in the Reinforcement Learning (RL) training process, becomes even more important in continual RL with sequential environments. In continual RL, the learner interacts with non-stationary, sequential tasks and is required to learn new tasks without forgetting previous knowledge. However, there is little work on implementing data augmentation for continual RL. In this paper, we investigate the efficacy of data augmentation for continual RL. Specifically, we provide benchmarking data augmentations for continual RL, by (1) summarising existing data augmentation methods and (2) including a new augmentation method for continual RL: Adversarial Augmentation with Gradient Episodic Memory (Adv-GEM). Extensive experiments show that data augmentations, such as random amplitude scaling, state-switch, mixup, adversarial augmentation, and Adv-GEM, can improve existing continual RL algorithms in terms of their average performance, catastrophic forgetting, and forward transfer, on robot control tasks. All data augmentation methods are implemented as plug-in modules for trivial integration into continual RL methods.

Eidos: Efficient, Imperceptible Adversarial 3D Point CloudsHanwei Zhang, Luo Cheng, Qisong He et al.
Classification of 3D point clouds is a challenging machine learning (ML) task with important real-world applications in a spectrum from autonomous driving and robot-assisted surgery to earth observation from low orbit. As with other ML tasks, classification models are notoriously brittle in the presence of adversarial attacks. These are rooted in imperceptible changes to inputs with the effect that a seemingly well-trained model ends up misclassifying the input. This paper adds to the understanding of adversarial attacks by presenting Eidos, a framework providing Efficient Imperceptible aDversarial attacks on 3D pOint cloudS. Eidos supports a diverse set of imperceptibility metrics. It employs an iterative, two-step procedure to identify optimal adversarial examples, thereby enabling a runtime-imperceptibility trade-off. We provide empirical evidence relative to several popular 3D point cloud classification models and several established 3D attack methods, showing Eidos' superiority with respect to efficiency as well as imperceptibility.
