DistFlow: A Fully Distributed RL Framework for Scalable and Efficient LLM Post-Training

Effectively scaling Reinforcement Learning (RL) is crucial for enhancing the reasoning and alignment of Large Language Models. The massive data and complex execution flows inherent in these tasks require a distributed architecture capable of efficient scaling. However, to simplify programming and dependency management, mainstream frameworks often rely on a centralized architecture where a single node dispatches both control and data. This inherent coupling creates significant communication bottlenecks, severely limiting system scalability and efficiency. We present DISTFLOW, a novel, fully distributed RL framework that adopts a multi-controller paradigm. By decoupling data transmission from control dispatch, DISTFLOW establishes a parallelism-aware, decentralized Data Coordinator that leverages local caching, load balancing, and asynchronous double buffer to minimize communication overhead and mitigate straggler effects. For control logic, it introduces a task scheduler built upon Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) that facilitates fine-grained, independent execution. Experimental results demonstrate that DISTFLOW achieves near-linear scalability up to 512 GPUs and delivers up to a 2.63x throughput improvement over state-of-the-art (SOTA) frameworks. DR2: Diffusion-based Robust Degradation Remover for Blind Face Restoration

Blind face restoration usually synthesizes degraded low-quality data with a pre-defined degradation model for training, while more complex cases could happen in the real world. This gap between the assumed and actual degradation hurts the restoration performance where artifacts are often observed in the output. However, it is expensive and infeasible to include every type of degradation to cover real-world cases in the training data. To tackle this robustness issue, we propose Diffusion-based Robust Degradation Remover (DR2) to first transform the degraded image to a coarse but degradation-invariant prediction, then employ an enhancement module to restore the coarse prediction to a high-quality image. By leveraging a well-performing denoising diffusion probabilistic model, our DR2 diffuses input images to a noisy status where various types of degradation give way to Gaussian noise, and then captures semantic information through iterative denoising steps. As a result, DR2 is robust against common degradation (e.g. blur, resize, noise and compression) and compatible with different designs of enhancement modules. Experiments in various settings show that our framework outperforms state-of-the-art methods on heavily degraded synthetic and real-world datasets.

ShotCrop$^3$: Cropping Human-Centric Images into Cinematic Triple-Shot Compositions

Prior work on aesthetic composition typically produces a single aesthetically pleasing crop, overlooking the narrative value of composing multiple shots from one scene. In practice, multi-shot composition is critical for downstream creative workflows: commercial posters often require multiple crops with different emphases (e.g., context, subject, and emotion/product details) to present key story beats. Therefore, we propose \textbf{Triple-Shot Compositions (TSC)}, a composition task that generates a three-shot set -- establishing, medium, and close-up -- from a single human-centric image, each paired with a brief shot description to support visual narration. To learn TSC with limited expert annotations, we introduce \textbf{ShotCrop} which undergoes a three-stage training process: it first applies Chain-of-Thought supervised fine-tuning to establish basic reasoning and aesthetic shot-cropping skills, then performs semi-supervised fine-tuning with high-confidence pseudo labels to further enhance aesthetic capability, and is finally optimized with Group Relative Policy Optimization for \textbf{ShotCrop} (GRPO-S) using a composite reward tailored for it. Specifically, our pseudo-labeling strategy combines MLLM-based scoring, aesthetic assessment, and CLIP similarity to retain high-confidence training signals. In addition, we present TSC-Bench, a benchmark of 1.2k expert-annotated test cases. Notably, ShotCrop achieves an average improvement of \textbf{2.82} times over GPT-5 in shot localization accuracy.

PermuQuant: Lowering Per-Group Quantization Error by Reordering Channels for Diffusion Models

Large-scale visual generative models have achieved remarkable performance. However, their high computational and memory costs make deployment challenging in resource-constrained scenarios, such as interactive applications and personal single-GPU usage. Post-training quantization (PTQ) offers a practical solution by compressing pretrained models without expensive retraining. However, existing PTQ methods still suffer from severe quality degradation under extremely low-bit settings. In this paper, we identify channel ordering as an important but underexplored factor in per-group quantization. In this setting, each contiguous group shares one quantization scale. When channels with very different statistics are placed in the same group, the scale can be dominated by outliers and cause large quantization errors. Based on this observation, we propose PermuQuant, a simple and effective PTQ framework for low-bit diffusion models. PermuQuant sorts channels by a joint second-moment criterion before per-group quantization, placing channels with similar activation and weight statistics into the same group. It further uses a calibration-based acceptance rule to apply reordering only when the selected permutation reduces quantization error on calibration data. The selected permutations are absorbed into adjacent modules or applied to weights offline, avoiding explicit runtime permutation operations. Extensive experiments on multiple large diffusion models show that PermuQuant consistently reduces quantization error and outperforms existing PTQ baselines. On FLUX.1-dev with an RTX 5090, PermuQuant achieves up to a 1.8$\times$ single step speedup and reduces the DiT memory footprint by 3.5$\times$ under W4A4 NVFP4 quantization. PlanViz: Evaluating Planning-Oriented Image Generation and Editing for Computer-Use Tasks

Unified multimodal models (UMMs) have shown impressive capabilities in generating natural images and supporting multimodal reasoning. However, their potential in supporting computer-use planning tasks, which are closely related to our lives, remain underexplored. Image generation and editing in computer-use tasks require capabilities like spatial reasoning and procedural understanding, and it is still unknown whether UMMs have these capabilities to finish these tasks or not. Therefore, we propose PlanViz, a new benchmark designed to evaluate image generation and editing for computer-use tasks. To achieve the goal of our evaluation, we focus on sub-tasks which frequently involve in daily life and require planning steps. Specifically, three new sub-tasks are designed: route planning, work diagramming, and web&UI displaying. We address challenges in data quality ensuring by curating human-annotated questions and reference images, and a quality control process. For challenges of comprehensive and exact evaluation, a task-adaptive score, PlanScore, is proposed. The score helps understanding the correctness, visual quality and efficiency of generated images. Through experiments, we highlight key limitations and opportunities for future research on this topic.

ColorFLUX: A Structure-Color Decoupling Framework for Old Photo Colorization

Old photos preserve invaluable historical memories, making their restoration and colorization highly desirable. While existing restoration models can address some degradation issues like denoising and scratch removal, they often struggle with accurate colorization. This limitation arises from the unique degradation inherent in old photos, such as faded brightness and altered color hues, which are different from modern photo distributions, creating a substantial domain gap during colorization. In this paper, we propose a novel old photo colorization framework based on the generative diffusion model FLUX. Our approach introduces a structure-color decoupling strategy that separates structure preservation from color restoration, enabling accurate colorization of old photos while maintaining structural consistency. We further enhance the model with a progressive Direct Preference Optimization (Pro-DPO) strategy, which allows the model to learn subtle color preferences through coarse-to-fine transitions in color augmentation. Additionally, we address the limitations of text-based prompts by introducing visual semantic prompts, which extract fine-grained semantic information directly from old photos, helping to eliminate the color bias inherent in old photos. Experimental results on both synthetic and real datasets demonstrate that our approach outperforms existing state-of-the-art colorization methods, including closed-source commercial models, producing high-quality and vivid colorization.

YOSE: You Only Select Essential Tokens for Efficient DiT-based Video Object Removal

Recent advances in Diffusion Transformer (DiT)-based video generation technologies have shown impressive results for video object removal. However, these methods still suffer from substantial inference latency. For instance, although MiniMax Remover achieves state-of-the-art visual quality, it operates at only around 10FPS, primarily due to dense computations over the entire spatiotemporal token space, even when only a small masked region actually requires processing. In this paper, we present YOSE, You Only Select Essential Tokens, an efficient fine-tuning framework. YOSE introduces two key components: Batch Variable-length Indexing (BVI) and Diffusion Process Simulator (DiffSim) Module. BVI is a differentiable dynamic indexing operator that adaptively selects essential tokens based on mask information, enabling variable-length token processing across samples. DiffSim provides a diffusion process approximation mechanism for unmasked tokens, which simulates the influence of unmasked regions within DiT self-attention to maintain semantic consistency for masked tokens. With these designs, YOSE achieves mask-aware acceleration, where the inference time scales approximately linearly with the masked regions, in contrast to full-token diffusion methods whose computation remains constant regardless of the mask size. Extensive experiments demonstrate that YOSE achieves up to 2.5X speedup in 70% of cases while maintaining visual quality comparable to the baseline. UmniBench: Unified Understand and Generation Model Oriented Omni-dimensional Benchmark

Unifying multimodal understanding and generation has shown impressive capabilities in cutting-edge proprietary systems. However, evaluations of unified multimodal models (UMMs) remain decoupled, assessing their understanding and generation abilities separately with corresponding datasets. To address this, we propose UmniBench, a benchmark tailored for UMMs with omni-dimensional evaluation. First, UmniBench can assess the understanding, generation, and editing ability within a single evaluation process. Based on human-examined prompts and QA pairs, UmniBench leverages UMM itself to evaluate its generation and editing ability with its understanding ability. This simple but effective paradigm allows comprehensive evaluation of UMMs. Second, UmniBench covers 13 major domains and more than 200 concepts, ensuring a thorough inspection of UMMs. Moreover, UmniBench can also decouple and separately evaluate understanding, generation, and editing abilities, providing a fine-grained assessment. Based on UmniBench, we benchmark 24 popular models, including both UMMs and single-ability large models. We hope this benchmark provides a more comprehensive and objective view of unified models and logistical support for improving the performance of the community model.

Fast Image Super-Resolution via Consistency Rectified Flow

Diffusion models (DMs) have demonstrated remarkable success in real-world image super-resolution (SR), yet their reliance on time-consuming multi-step sampling largely hinders their practical applications. While recent efforts have introduced few- or single-step solutions, existing methods either inefficiently model the process from noisy input or fail to fully exploit iterative generative priors, compromising the fidelity and quality of the reconstructed images. To address this issue, we propose FlowSR, a novel approach that reformulates the SR problem as a rectified flow from low-resolution (LR) to high-resolution (HR) images. Our method leverages an improved consistency learning strategy to enable high-quality SR in a single step. Specifically, we refine the original consistency distillation process by incorporating HR regularization, ensuring that the learned SR flow not only enforces self-consistency but also converges precisely to the ground-truth HR target. Furthermore, we introduce a fast-slow scheduling strategy, where adjacent timesteps for consistency learning are sampled from two distinct schedulers: a fast scheduler with fewer timesteps to improve efficiency, and a slow scheduler with more timesteps to capture fine-grained texture details. Extensive experiments demonstrate that FlowSR achieves outstanding performance in both efficiency and image quality.

Accelerating Rectified Flow Models via Trajectory-Aware Caching

Diffusion and rectified flow (RF) models generate high-fidelity images and videos, but their iterative velocity-field evaluations are computationally expensive. Existing caching methods accelerate sampling by skipping timesteps, yet their coarse approximations introduce accumulated errors over long skip intervals and degrade quality under aggressive acceleration. We propose TACache (Trajectory-Aware Cache), a training-free acceleration framework following a skip-then-compensate paradigm. TACache performs an orthogonal decomposition of discrete velocity acceleration along the RF trajectory into a parallel component and an orthogonal residual, isolating the magnitude and directional sources of per-step approximation error. The framework operates in two stages: offline, cumulative variation thresholds on the magnitude and direction indicators yield the skip schedule and bound how far each skip interval may extend; online, at each skipped step the offline statistics are combined with the sample's historical orthogonal direction to reconstruct the skipped velocity without additional model evaluations. Experiments on BAGEL, FLUX.1-dev, and Wan2.1-1.3B show that TACache achieves up to 4.14 speedup on text-to-image generation and 2.11 speedup on text-to-video generation, with consistent improvements over prior cache-based methods on all reference-based fidelity metrics. MUC: Mixture of Uncalibrated Cameras for Robust 3D Human Body Reconstruction

Multiple cameras can provide comprehensive multi-view video coverage of a person. Fusing this multi-view data is crucial for tasks like behavioral analysis, although it traditionally requires camera calibration, a process that is often complex. Moreover, previous studies have overlooked the challenges posed by self-occlusion under multiple views and the continuity of human body shape estimation. In this study, we introduce a method to reconstruct the 3D human body from multiple uncalibrated camera views. Initially, we utilize a pre-trained human body encoder to process each camera view individually, enabling the reconstruction of human body models and parameters for each view along with predicted camera positions. Rather than merely averaging the models across views, we develop a neural network trained to assign weights to individual views for all human body joints, based on the estimated distribution of joint distances from each camera. Additionally, we focus on the mesh surface of the human body for dynamic fusion, allowing for the seamless integration of facial expressions and body shape into a unified human body model. Our method has shown excellent performance in reconstructing the human body on two public datasets, advancing beyond previous work from the SMPL model to the SMPL-X model. This extension incorporates more complex hand poses and facial expressions, enhancing the detail and accuracy of the reconstructions. UI2V-Bench: An Understanding-based Image-to-video Generation Benchmark

Generative diffusion models are developing rapidly and attracting increasing attention due to their wide range of applications. Image-to-Video (I2V) generation has become a major focus in the field of video synthesis. However, existing evaluation benchmarks primarily focus on aspects such as video quality and temporal consistency, while largely overlooking the model's ability to understand the semantics of specific subjects in the input image or to ensure that the generated video aligns with physical laws and human commonsense. To address this gap, we propose UI2V-Bench, a novel benchmark for evaluating I2V models with a focus on semantic understanding and reasoning. It introduces four primary evaluation dimensions: spatial understanding, attribute binding, category understanding, and reasoning. To assess these dimensions, we design two evaluation methods based on Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs): an instance-level pipeline for fine-grained semantic understanding, and a feedback-based reasoning pipeline that enables step-by-step causal assessment for more accurate evaluation. UI2V-Bench includes approximately 500 carefully constructed text-image pairs and evaluates a range of both open source and closed-source I2V models across all defined dimensions. We further incorporate human evaluations, which show strong alignment with the proposed MLLM-based metrics. Overall, UI2V-Bench fills a critical gap in I2V evaluation by emphasizing semantic comprehension and reasoning ability, offering a robust framework and dataset to support future research and model development in the field.

G$^2$TR: Generation-Guided Visual Token Reduction for Separate-Encoder Unified Multimodal Models

The development of separate-encoder Unified multimodal models (UMMs) comes with a rapidly growing inference cost due to dense visual token processing. In this paper, we focus on understanding-side visual token reduction for improving the efficiency of separate-encoder UMMs. While this topic has been widely studied for MLLMs, existing methods typically rely on attention scores, text-image similarity and so on, implicitly assuming that the final objective is discriminative reasoning. This assumption does not hold for UMMs, where understanding-side visual tokens must also preserve the model's capabilities for editing images. We propose G$^2$TR, a generation-guided visual token reduction framework for separate-encoder UMMs. Our key insight is that the generation branch provides a task-agnostic signal for identifying understanding-side visual tokens that are not only semantically relevant but also important for latent-space image reconstruction and generation. G$^2$TR estimates token importance from consistency with VAE latent, performs balanced token selection, and merges redundant tokens into retained representatives to reduce information loss. The method is training-free, plug-and-play, and applied only after the understanding encoding stage, making it compatible with existing UMM inference pipelines. Experiments on image understanding and editing benchmarks show that G$^2$TR substantially reduces visual tokens and prefill computation by 1.94x while maintaining both reasoning accuracy and editing quality, outperforming baselines on almost all benchmarks.

How Much is Brain Data Worth for Machine Learning?

If a person can solve a task, can measuring their brain make it easier to train a model to solve that task too? Recent NeuroAI work suggests that supplementing task training with neural recordings can modestly improve model performance and robustness. However, it is unclear when there should be a benefit from using neural data and how much benefit to expect. We formulate this question mathematically, and begin to address it theoretically using a simple, analytically tractable linear gaussian model of task targets and neural recordings. For a multimodal estimator trained on both brain data and task labels, we derive scaling laws for how performance scales with the numbers of brain and task samples. From these laws we derive relative value and exchange rates between brain samples and task samples, quantifying how much extra task samples neural data is worth as a function of task-brain alignment, neural and task noise, latent dimension, and brain data sample size. We also analyze test distribution shift, to identify conditions where brain-regularized learning can produce substantial robustness gains through learned invariances. Finally, under a fixed collection budget, we characterize the regimes in which brain data is worth collecting. Our results provide a foundation for understanding how valuable brain data could be for improving machine learning.

RefSTAR: Blind Facial Image Restoration with Reference Selection, Transfer, and Reconstruction

Blind facial image restoration is highly challenging due to unknown complex degradations and the sensitivity of humans to faces. Although existing methods introduce auxiliary information from generative priors or high-quality reference images, they still struggle with identity preservation problems, mainly due to improper feature introduction on detailed textures. In this paper, we focus on effectively incorporating appropriate features from high-quality reference images, presenting a novel blind facial image restoration method that considers reference selection, transfer, and reconstruction (RefSTAR). In terms of selection, we construct a reference selection (RefSel) module. For training the RefSel module, we construct a RefSel-HQ dataset through a mask generation pipeline, which contains annotating masks for 10,000 ground truth-reference pairs. As for the transfer, due to the trivial solution in vanilla cross-attention operations, a feature fusion paradigm is designed to force the features from the reference to be integrated. Finally, we propose a reference image reconstruction mechanism that further ensures the presence of reference image features in the output image. The cycle consistency loss is also redesigned in conjunction with the mask. Extensive experiments on various backbone models demonstrate superior performance, showing better identity preservation ability and reference feature transfer quality. Frustum ConvNet: Sliding Frustums to Aggregate Local Point-Wise Features for Amodal 3D Object Detection

In this work, we propose a novel method termed \emph{Frustum ConvNet (F-ConvNet)} for amodal 3D object detection from point clouds. Given 2D region proposals in an RGB image, our method first generates a sequence of frustums for each region proposal, and uses the obtained frustums to group local points. F-ConvNet aggregates point-wise features as frustum-level feature vectors, and arrays these feature vectors as a feature map for use of its subsequent component of fully convolutional network (FCN), which spatially fuses frustum-level features and supports an end-to-end and continuous estimation of oriented boxes in the 3D space. We also propose component variants of F-ConvNet, including an FCN variant that extracts multi-resolution frustum features, and a refined use of F-ConvNet over a reduced 3D space. Careful ablation studies verify the efficacy of these component variants. F-ConvNet assumes no prior knowledge of the working 3D environment and is thus dataset-agnostic. We present experiments on both the indoor SUN-RGBD and outdoor KITTI datasets. F-ConvNet outperforms all existing methods on SUN-RGBD, and at the time of submission it outperforms all published works on the KITTI benchmark. HP-Edit: A Human-Preference Post-Training Framework for Image Editing

Common image editing tasks typically adopt powerful generative diffusion models as the leading paradigm for real-world content editing. Meanwhile, although reinforcement learning (RL) methods such as Diffusion-DPO and Flow-GRPO have further improved generation quality, efficiently applying Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback (RLHF) to diffusion-based editing remains largely unexplored, due to a lack of scalable human-preference datasets and frameworks tailored to diverse editing needs. To fill this gap, we propose HP-Edit, a post-training framework for Human Preference-aligned Editing, and introduce RealPref-50K, a real-world dataset across eight common tasks and balancing common object editing. Specifically, HP-Edit leverages a small amount of human-preference scoring data and a pretrained visual large language model (VLM) to develop HP-Scorer--an automatic, human preference-aligned evaluator. We then use HP-Scorer both to efficiently build a scalable preference dataset and to serve as the reward function for post-training the editing model. We also introduce RealPref-Bench, a benchmark for evaluating real-world editing performance. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our approach significantly enhances models such as Qwen-Image-Edit-2509, aligning their outputs more closely with human preference.

Dual Prompting Image Restoration with Diffusion Transformers

Recent state-of-the-art image restoration methods mostly adopt latent diffusion models with U-Net backbones, yet still facing challenges in achieving high-quality restoration due to their limited capabilities. Diffusion transformers (DiTs), like SD3, are emerging as a promising alternative because of their better quality with scalability. In this paper, we introduce DPIR (Dual Prompting Image Restoration), a novel image restoration method that effectivly extracts conditional information of low-quality images from multiple perspectives. Specifically, DPIR consits of two branches: a low-quality image conditioning branch and a dual prompting control branch. The first branch utilizes a lightweight module to incorporate image priors into the DiT with high efficiency. More importantly, we believe that in image restoration, textual description alone cannot fully capture its rich visual characteristics. Therefore, a dual prompting module is designed to provide DiT with additional visual cues, capturing both global context and local appearance. The extracted global-local visual prompts as extra conditional control, alongside textual prompts to form dual prompts, greatly enhance the quality of the restoration. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that DPIR delivers superior image restoration performance.

TD-BFR: Truncated Diffusion Model for Efficient Blind Face Restoration

Diffusion-based methodologies have shown significant potential in blind face restoration (BFR), leveraging their robust generative capabilities. However, they are often criticized for two significant problems: 1) slow training and inference speed, and 2) inadequate recovery of fine-grained facial details. To address these problems, we propose a novel Truncated Diffusion model for efficient Blind Face Restoration (TD-BFR), a three-stage paradigm tailored for the progressive resolution of degraded images. Specifically, TD-BFR utilizes an innovative truncated sampling method, starting from low-quality (LQ) images at low resolution to enhance sampling speed, and then introduces an adaptive degradation removal module to handle unknown degradations and connect the generation processes across different resolutions. Additionally, we further adapt the priors of pre-trained diffusion models to recover rich facial details. Our method efficiently restores high-quality images in a coarse-to-fine manner and experimental results demonstrate that TD-BFR is, on average, \textbf{4.75$\times$} faster than current state-of-the-art diffusion-based BFR methods while maintaining competitive quality.

PocketSR: The Super-Resolution Expert in Your Pocket Mobiles

Real-world image super-resolution (RealSR) aims to enhance the visual quality of in-the-wild images, such as those captured by mobile phones. While existing methods leveraging large generative models demonstrate impressive results, the high computational cost and latency make them impractical for edge deployment. In this paper, we introduce PocketSR, an ultra-lightweight, single-step model that brings generative modeling capabilities to RealSR while maintaining high fidelity. To achieve this, we design LiteED, a highly efficient alternative to the original computationally intensive VAE in SD, reducing parameters by 97.5% while preserving high-quality encoding and decoding. Additionally, we propose online annealing pruning for the U-Net, which progressively shifts generative priors from heavy modules to lightweight counterparts, ensuring effective knowledge transfer and further optimizing efficiency. To mitigate the loss of prior knowledge during pruning, we incorporate a multi-layer feature distillation loss. Through an in-depth analysis of each design component, we provide valuable insights for future research. PocketSR, with a model size of 146M parameters, processes 4K images in just 0.8 seconds, achieving a remarkable speedup over previous methods. Notably, it delivers performance on par with state-of-the-art single-step and even multi-step RealSR models, making it a highly practical solution for edge-device applications.

Visual Programmability: A Guide for Code-as-Thought in Chart Understanding

Chart understanding presents a critical test to the reasoning capabilities of Vision-Language Models (VLMs). Prior approaches face critical limitations: some rely on external tools, making them brittle and constrained by a predefined toolkit, while others fine-tune specialist models that often adopt a single reasoning strategy, such as text-based chain-of-thought (CoT). The intermediate steps of text-based reasoning are difficult to verify, which complicates the use of reinforcement-learning signals that reward factual accuracy. To address this, we propose a Code-as-Thought (CaT) approach to represent the visual information of a chart in a verifiable, symbolic format. Our key insight is that this strategy must be adaptive: a fixed, code-only implementation consistently fails on complex charts where symbolic representation is unsuitable. This finding leads us to introduce Visual Programmability: a learnable property that determines if a chart-question pair is better solved with code or direct visual analysis. We implement this concept in an adaptive framework where a VLM learns to choose between the CaT pathway and a direct visual reasoning pathway. The selection policy of the model is trained with reinforcement learning using a novel dual-reward system. This system combines a data-accuracy reward to ground the model in facts and prevent numerical hallucination, with a decision reward that teaches the model when to use each strategy, preventing it from defaulting to a single reasoning mode. Experiments demonstrate strong and robust performance across diverse chart-understanding benchmarks. Our work shows that VLMs can be taught not only to reason but also how to reason, dynamically selecting the optimal reasoning pathway for each task.

Object as Hotspots: An Anchor-Free 3D Object Detection Approach via Firing of Hotspots

Accurate 3D object detection in LiDAR based point clouds suffers from the challenges of data sparsity and irregularities. Existing methods strive to organize the points regularly, e.g. voxelize, pass them through a designed 2D/3D neural network, and then define object-level anchors that predict offsets of 3D bounding boxes using collective evidences from all the points on the objects of interest. Contrary to the state-of-the-art anchor-based methods, based on the very nature of data sparsity, we observe that even points on an individual object part are informative about semantic information of the object. We thus argue in this paper for an approach opposite to existing methods using object-level anchors. Inspired by compositional models, which represent an object as parts and their spatial relations, we propose to represent an object as composition of its interior non-empty voxels, termed hotspots, and the spatial relations of hotspots. This gives rise to the representation of Object as Hotspots (OHS). Based on OHS, we further propose an anchor-free detection head with a novel ground truth assignment strategy that deals with inter-object point-sparsity imbalance to prevent the network from biasing towards objects with more points. Experimental results show that our proposed method works remarkably well on objects with a small number of points. Notably, our approach ranked 1st on KITTI 3D Detection Benchmark for cyclist and pedestrian detection, and achieved state-of-the-art performance on NuScenes 3D Detection Benchmark.

Part-Aware Fine-grained Object Categorization using Weakly Supervised Part Detection Network

Fine-grained object categorization aims for distinguishing objects of subordinate categories that belong to the same entry-level object category. The task is challenging due to the facts that (1) training images with ground-truth labels are difficult to obtain, and (2) variations among different subordinate categories are subtle. It is well established that characterizing features of different subordinate categories are located on local parts of object instances. In fact, careful part annotations are available in many fine-grained categorization datasets. However, manually annotating object parts requires expertise, which is also difficult to generalize to new fine-grained categorization tasks. In this work, we propose a Weakly Supervised Part Detection Network (PartNet) that is able to detect discriminative local parts for use of fine-grained categorization. A vanilla PartNet builds on top of a base subnetwork two parallel streams of upper network layers, which respectively compute scores of classification probabilities (over subordinate categories) and detection probabilities (over a specified number of discriminative part detectors) for local regions of interest (RoIs). The image-level prediction is obtained by aggregating element-wise products of these region-level probabilities. To generate a diverse set of RoIs as inputs of PartNet, we propose a simple Discretized Part Proposals module (DPP) that directly targets for proposing candidates of discriminative local parts, with no bridging via object-level proposals. Experiments on the benchmark CUB-200-2011 and Oxford Flower 102 datasets show the efficacy of our proposed method for both discriminative part detection and fine-grained categorization. In particular, we achieve the new state-of-the-art performance on CUB-200-2011 dataset when ground-truth part annotations are not available.
