HeLoM: Hierarchical Learning for Whole-Body Loco-Manipulation by a Hexapod Robot

In nature, animals often need to move/manipulate objects comparable in weight/size to their own bodies. Compared to grasping and carrying, pushing provides a more straightforward and efficient non-prehensile manipulation strategy, avoiding complex grasp design while leveraging direct contact to regulate an object's pose during interaction. Achieving effective pushing, however, requires both sufficient manipulation capability and stable whole-body coordination, which is particularly challenging when dealing with heavy or irregular objects. To address these challenges, we propose HeLoM, a learning-based hierarchical whole-body manipulation framework for hexapod robots that exploits coordinated multi-limb control and is applicable to multi-legged robotic systems. Inspired by the cooperative strategies of multi-legged insects, our framework leverages multiple contact points and high degrees of freedom to enable efficient and dynamic whole-body coordination during object interaction. HeLoM's high-level planner plans pushing behaviors, while its low-level controller maintains locomotion stability and generates dynamically consistent joint actions. This design enables the robot to maintain balance while executing continuous and controllable pushing behaviors through coordinated foreleg interaction and supportive hind-leg propulsion. We validate the effectiveness of HeLoM through both simulation and real-world experiments. Results show that our framework can stably push objects of varying sizes and unknown physical properties to designated goal poses in the real world.

TAGA: Terrain-aware Active Gaze Learning for Generalizable Agile Humanoid Locomotion

Agile humanoid locomotion across diverse challenging terrain demands both wide perceptual coverage and precise local geometry understanding. Motivated by the way humans selectively look at relevant terrain during locomotion, we introduce TAGA, a Terrain-aware Active Gaze learning framework for Attention-based humanoid control. By fusing vision, proprioception, and motion commands, our framework guides the model to learn anticipatory cues and actively attend to specific areas of the height scan, selectively using these informative regions for the downstream network. This adaptively increases the information density of observations under tight onboard computational constraints, thus enabling fine-grained perceptive locomotion over larger-scale terrains. We find that such gaze behaviors can naturally emerge through reinforcement learning alone, without requiring additional supervision or explicit guidance, significantly improve training efficiency. As a result, the trained policy demonstrates robust and generalizable locomotion in simulation and on hardware, including reliable terrain-aware foothold selection, elevated-platform traversal, competitive sparse-foothold traversal, and the largest reported real-world gap traversal distance of 1.2m among perceptive humanoid locomotion systems, while maintaining stability under severe perceptual disturbances and environmental interference.

Hinge Regression Trees and HRT-Boost: Newton-Optimized Oblique Learning for Compact Tabular Models

Learning high-quality oblique decision trees remains a significant challenge due to the discrete and non-convex nature of split optimization. We present the Hinge Regression Tree (HRT) framework, which reframes each oblique split as a nonlinear least-squares problem over two linear predictors whose max/min envelope induces ReLU-like representation capacity. We show that the resulting node-level optimization can be interpreted as a damped Newton method, and we establish the monotonic decrease of the node objective for its backtracking line-search variant. We establish, theoretically, that HRT is a universal approximator with an explicit $O(δ^2)$ approximation rate. Building upon this base learner, we propose HRT-Boost, a mathematically synergistic ensemble extension that couples node-level Newton updates with stage-wise functional gradient descent. We show that this ensemble construction admits a stage-wise empirical risk reduction guarantee under the squared loss. Empirical evaluations on synthetic and real-world benchmarks show that HRT is highly competitive with established single-tree baselines, and HRT-Boost compares favorably with strong ensemble baselines and often yields substantially more compact models. Optimizing DER Aggregate Flexibility via Network Reconfiguration

The aggregate flexibility region of distributed energy resources (DERs) quantifies the aggregate power shaping capabilities of DERs. It characterizes the distribution network's potential for wholesale market participation and grid service provision at the transmission level. To enhance flexibility and fully exploit the potential of DERs, this paper proposes a method to optimize the aggregate flexibility region through distribution network reconfiguration. First, we formulate the ellipsoidal aggregate flexibility region characterization problem as a two-stage adaptive robust optimization problem and derive an exact convex reformulation with a large number of second-order cone constraints. By exploiting the problem structure, we propose a scalable Benders decomposition algorithm with provable finite convergence to the optimal solution. Finally, we propose an optimal reconfiguration problem for aggregate flexibility region optimization and solve it using the custom Benders decomposition. Numerical simulations on the IEEE 123-bus test feeder demonstrate that, compared to existing approaches, substantial improvements in the aggregate flexibility region can be achieved over multiple scenarios with the optimized topology.

Edge Graph Neural Networks for Massive MIMO Detection

Massive Multiple-Input Multiple-Out (MIMO) detection is an important problem in modern wireless communication systems. While traditional Belief Propagation (BP) detectors perform poorly on loopy graphs, the recent Graph Neural Networks (GNNs)-based method can overcome the drawbacks of BP and achieve superior performance. Nevertheless, direct use of GNN ignores the importance of edge attributes and suffers from high computation overhead using a fully connected graph structure. In this paper, we propose an efficient GNN-inspired algorithm, called the Edge Graph Neural Network (EGNN), to detect MIMO signals. We first compute graph edge weights through channel correlation and then leverage the obtained weights as a metric to evaluate the importance of neighbors of each node. Moreover, we design an adaptive Edge Drop (ED) scheme to sparsify the graph such that computational cost can be significantly reduced. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed EGNN achieves better or comparable performance to popular MIMO detection methods for different modulation schemes and costs the least detection time compared to GNN-based approaches.

General-purpose Dataflow Model with Neuromorphic Primitives

Neuromorphic computing exhibits great potential to provide high-performance benefits in various applications beyond neural networks. However, a general-purpose program execution model that aligns with the features of neuromorphic computing is required to bridge the gap between program versatility and neuromorphic hardware efficiency. The dataflow model offers a potential solution, but it faces high graph complexity and incompatibility with neuromorphic hardware when dealing with control flow programs, which decreases the programmability and performance. Here, we present a dataflow model tailored for neuromorphic hardware, called neuromorphic dataflow, which provides a compact, concise, and neuromorphic-compatible program representation for control logic. The neuromorphic dataflow introduces "when" and "where" primitives, which restructure the view of control. The neuromorphic dataflow embeds these primitives in the dataflow schema with the plasticity inherited from the spiking algorithms. Our method enables the deployment of general-purpose programs on neuromorphic hardware with both programmability and plasticity, while fully utilizing the hardware's potential.

Loosely-Structured Software: Engineering Context, Structure, and Evolution Entropy in Runtime-Rewired Multi-Agent Systems

As LLM-based multi-agent systems (MAS) become more autonomous, their free-form interactions increasingly dominate system behavior. However, scaling the number of agents often amplifies context pressure, coordination errors, and system drift. It is well known that building robust MAS requires more than prompt tuning or increased model intelligence. It necessitates engineering discipline focused on architecture to manage complexity under uncertainty. We characterize agentic software by a core property: \emph{runtime generation and evolution under uncertainty}. Drawing upon and extending software engineering experience, especially object-oriented programming, this paper introduces \emph{Loosely-Structured Software (LSS)}, a new class of software systems that shifts the engineering focus from constructing deterministic logic to managing the runtime entropy generated by View-constructed programming, semantic-driven self-organization, and endogenous evolution. To make this entropy governable, we introduce design principles under a three-layer engineering framework: \emph{View/Context Engineering} to manage the execution environment and maintain task-relevant Views, \emph{Structure Engineering} to organize dynamic binding over artifacts and agents, and \emph{Evolution Engineering} to govern the lifecycle of self-rewriting artifacts. Building on this framework, we develop LSS design patterns as semantic control blocks that stabilize fluid, inference-mediated interactions while preserving agent adaptability. Together, these abstractions improve the \emph{designability}, \emph{scalability}, and \emph{evolvability} of agentic infrastructure. We provide basic experimental validation of key mechanisms, demonstrating the effectiveness of LSS.

Expert Streaming: Accelerating Low-Batch MoE Inference via Multi-chiplet Architecture and Dynamic Expert Trajectory Scheduling

Mixture-of-Experts is a promising approach for edge AI with low-batch inference. Yet, on-device deployments often face limited on-chip memory and severe workload imbalance; the prevalent use of offloading further incurs off-chip memory access bottlenecks. Moreover, MoE sparsity and dynamic gating shift distributed strategies toward much finer granularity and introduce runtime scheduling considerations. Recently, high die-to-die bandwidth chiplet interconnects have created new opportunities for multi-chiplet systems to address workload imbalance and offloading bottlenecks with fine-grained scheduling. In this paper, we propose Fully Sharded Expert Data Parallelism, a parallelization paradigm specifically architected for low-batch MoE inference on multi-chiplet accelerators. FSE-DP attains adaptive computation-communication overlap and balanced load by orchestrating fine-grained, complementary expert streams along dynamic trajectories across high-bandwidth D2D links. The attendant dataflow complexity is tamed by a minimal, hardware-amenable set of virtualization rules and a lightweight scheduling algorithm. Our approach achieves 1.22 to 2.00 times speedup over state-of-the-art baselines and saves up to 78.8 percent on-chip memory.

Joint sparse coding and temporal dynamics support context reconfiguration

Adaptive behavior requires the brain to transition between distinct contexts while maintaining representations of prior experience. The ability to reconfigure neural representations without erasing previously acquired knowledge is central to learning in dynamic environments, yet the neural mechanisms that support this balance remain unclear. Understanding these mechanisms is also critical for addressing catastrophic forgetting in artificial systems designed for lifelong learning. Here, we identify joint sparse coding and temporal dynamics in both the mouse medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) and computational networks as mechanisms that help preserve prior representations during context transitions. Specifically, sparsity in context-dependent representations reduces cross-context interference, whereas temporal dynamics within the network activity further enhance context separability across time. Strikingly, networks endowed with both properties, such as spiking neural networks, exhibit improved retention during lifelong learning without auxiliary heuristics. These findings establish joint sparse coding and temporal dynamics as a core mechanism supporting flexible context reconfiguration in lifelong learning and, through their activity constraining nature, as an energy-efficient architectural principle for stable adaptation. Together, they provide a mechanistic framework for understanding how the brain preserves prior knowledge while flexibly adapting to new contexts.

LHT: Statistically-Driven Oblique Decision Trees for Interpretable Classification

We introduce the Learning Hyperplane Tree (LHT), a novel oblique decision tree model designed for expressive and interpretable classification. LHT fundamentally distinguishes itself through a non-iterative, statistically-driven approach to constructing splitting hyperplanes. Unlike methods that rely on iterative optimization or heuristics, LHT directly computes the hyperplane parameters, which are derived from feature weights based on the differences in feature expectations between classes within each node. This deterministic mechanism enables a direct and well-defined hyperplane construction process. Predictions leverage a unique piecewise linear membership function within leaf nodes, obtained via local least-squares fitting. We formally analyze the convergence of the LHT splitting process, ensuring that each split yields meaningful, non-empty partitions. Furthermore, we establish that the time complexity for building an LHT up to depth $d$ is $O(mnd)$, demonstrating the practical feasibility of constructing trees with powerful oblique splits using this methodology. The explicit feature weighting at each split provides inherent interpretability. Experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate LHT's competitive accuracy, positioning it as a practical, theoretically grounded, and interpretable alternative in the landscape of tree-based models. Towards Quantized Model Parallelism for Graph-Augmented MLPs Based on Gradient-Free ADMM Framework

While Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are popular in the deep learning community, they suffer from several challenges including over-smoothing, over-squashing, and gradient vanishing. Recently, a series of models have attempted to relieve these issues by first augmenting the node features and then imposing node-wise functions based on Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP), which are widely referred to as GA-MLP models. However, while GA-MLP models enjoy deeper architectures for better accuracy, their efficiency largely deteriorates. Moreover, popular acceleration techniques such as stochastic-version or data-parallelism cannot be effectively applied due to the dependency among samples (i.e., nodes) in graphs. To address these issues, in this paper, instead of data parallelism, we propose a parallel graph deep learning Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (pdADMM-G) framework to achieve model parallelism: parameters in each layer of GA-MLP models can be updated in parallel. The extended pdADMM-G-Q algorithm reduces communication costs by introducing the quantization technique. Theoretical convergence to a (quantized) stationary point of the pdADMM-G algorithm and the pdADMM-G-Q algorithm is provided with a sublinear convergence rate $o(1/k)$, where $k$ is the number of iterations. Extensive experiments demonstrate the convergence of two proposed algorithms. Moreover, they lead to a more massive speedup and better performance than all state-of-the-art comparison methods on nine benchmark datasets. Last but not least, the proposed pdADMM-G-Q algorithm reduces communication overheads by up to $45\%$ without loss of performance. Day-Ahead Offering for Virtual Power Plants: A Stochastic Linear Programming Reformulation and Projected Subgradient Method

Virtual power plants (VPPs) are an emerging paradigm that aggregates distributed energy resources (DERs) for coordinated participation in power systems, including bidding as a single dispatchable entity in the wholesale market. In this paper, we address a critical operational challenge for VPPs: the day-ahead offering problem under highly intermittent and uncertain DER outputs and market prices. The day-ahead offering problem determines the price-quantity pairs submitted by VPPs while balancing profit opportunities against operational uncertainties. First, we formulate the problem as a scenario-based two-stage stochastic adaptive robust optimization problem, where the uncertainty of the locational marginal prices follows a Markov process and DER uncertainty is characterized by static uncertainty sets. Then, motivated by the outer approximation principle of the column-and-constraint generation (CC&G) algorithm, we propose a novel inner approximation-based projected subgradient method. By exploiting the problem structure, we propose two novel approaches to improve computational tractability. First, we show that under mild modeling assumptions, the robust second-stage problem can be equivalently reformulated as a linear program (LP) with a nested resource allocation structure that is amenable to an efficient greedy algorithm. Furthermore, motivated by the computational efficiency of solving the reformulated primal second-stage problem and the isotonic structure of the first-stage feasible region, we propose an efficient projected subgradient algorithm to solve the overall stochastic LP problem. Extensive computational experiments using real-world data demonstrate that the overall projected subgradient descent method achieves about two orders of magnitude speedup over CC&G while maintaining solution quality.

Rotation-Robust Regression with Convolutional Model Trees

We study rotation-robust learning for image inputs using Convolutional Model Trees (CMTs) [1], whose split and leaf coefficients can be structured on the image grid and transformed geometrically at deployment time. In a controlled MNIST setting with a rotation-invariant regression target, we introduce three geometry-aware inductive biases for split directions -- convolutional smoothing, a tilt dominance constraint, and importance-based pruning -- and quantify their impact on robustness under in-plane rotations. We further evaluate a deployment-time orientation search that selects a discrete rotation maximizing a forest-level confidence proxy without updating model parameters. Orientation search improves robustness under severe rotations but can be harmful near the canonical orientation when confidence is misaligned with correctness. Finally, we observe consistent trends on MNIST digit recognition implemented as one-vs-rest regression, highlighting both the promise and limitations of confidence-based orientation selection for model-tree ensembles.

Hinge Regression Tree: A Newton Method for Oblique Regression Tree Splitting

Oblique decision trees combine the transparency of trees with the power of multivariate decision boundaries, but learning high-quality oblique splits is NP-hard, and practical methods still rely on slow search or theory-free heuristics. We present the Hinge Regression Tree (HRT), which reframes each split as a non-linear least-squares problem over two linear predictors whose max/min envelope induces ReLU-like expressive power. The resulting alternating fitting procedure is exactly equivalent to a damped Newton (Gauss-Newton) method within fixed partitions. We analyze this node-level optimization and, for a backtracking line-search variant, prove that the local objective decreases monotonically and converges; in practice, both fixed and adaptive damping yield fast, stable convergence and can be combined with optional ridge regularization. We further prove that HRT's model class is a universal approximator with an explicit $O(δ^2)$ approximation rate, and show on synthetic and real-world benchmarks that it matches or outperforms single-tree baselines with more compact structures.

SATA: Safe and Adaptive Torque-Based Locomotion Policies Inspired by Animal Learning

Despite recent advances in learning-based controllers for legged robots, deployments in human-centric environments remain limited by safety concerns. Most of these approaches use position-based control, where policies output target joint angles that must be processed by a low-level controller (e.g., PD or impedance controllers) to compute joint torques. Although impressive results have been achieved in controlled real-world scenarios, these methods often struggle with compliance and adaptability when encountering environments or disturbances unseen during training, potentially resulting in extreme or unsafe behaviors. Inspired by how animals achieve smooth and adaptive movements by controlling muscle extension and contraction, torque-based policies offer a promising alternative by enabling precise and direct control of the actuators in torque space. In principle, this approach facilitates more effective interactions with the environment, resulting in safer and more adaptable behaviors. However, challenges such as a highly nonlinear state space and inefficient exploration during training have hindered their broader adoption. To address these limitations, we propose SATA, a bio-inspired framework that mimics key biomechanical principles and adaptive learning mechanisms observed in animal locomotion. Our approach effectively addresses the inherent challenges of learning torque-based policies by significantly improving early-stage exploration, leading to high-performance final policies. Remarkably, our method achieves zero-shot sim-to-real transfer. Our experimental results indicate that SATA demonstrates remarkable compliance and safety, even in challenging environments such as soft/slippery terrain or narrow passages, and under significant external disturbances, highlighting its potential for practical deployments in human-centric and safety-critical scenarios.

JailPO: A Novel Black-box Jailbreak Framework via Preference Optimization against Aligned LLMs

Large Language Models (LLMs) aligned with human feedback have recently garnered significant attention. However, it remains vulnerable to jailbreak attacks, where adversaries manipulate prompts to induce harmful outputs. Exploring jailbreak attacks enables us to investigate the vulnerabilities of LLMs and further guides us in enhancing their security. Unfortunately, existing techniques mainly rely on handcrafted templates or generated-based optimization, posing challenges in scalability, efficiency and universality. To address these issues, we present JailPO, a novel black-box jailbreak framework to examine LLM alignment. For scalability and universality, JailPO meticulously trains attack models to automatically generate covert jailbreak prompts. Furthermore, we introduce a preference optimization-based attack method to enhance the jailbreak effectiveness, thereby improving efficiency. To analyze model vulnerabilities, we provide three flexible jailbreak patterns. Extensive experiments demonstrate that JailPO not only automates the attack process while maintaining effectiveness but also exhibits superior performance in efficiency, universality, and robustness against defenses compared to baselines. Additionally, our analysis of the three JailPO patterns reveals that attacks based on complex templates exhibit higher attack strength, whereas covert question transformations elicit riskier responses and are more likely to bypass defense mechanisms.

Light-SQ: Structure-aware Shape Abstraction with Superquadrics for Generated Meshes

In user-generated-content (UGC) applications, non-expert users often rely on image-to-3D generative models to create 3D assets. In this context, primitive-based shape abstraction offers a promising solution for UGC scenarios by compressing high-resolution meshes into compact, editable representations. Towards this end, effective shape abstraction must therefore be structure-aware, characterized by low overlap between primitives, part-aware alignment, and primitive compactness. We present Light-SQ, a novel superquadric-based optimization framework that explicitly emphasizes structure-awareness from three aspects. (a) We introduce SDF carving to iteratively udpate the target signed distance field, discouraging overlap between primitives. (b) We propose a block-regrow-fill strategy guided by structure-aware volumetric decomposition, enabling structural partitioning to drive primitive placement. (c) We implement adaptive residual pruning based on SDF update history to surpress over-segmentation and ensure compact results. In addition, Light-SQ supports multiscale fitting, enabling localized refinement to preserve fine geometric details. To evaluate our method, we introduce 3DGen-Prim, a benchmark extending 3DGen-Bench with new metrics for both reconstruction quality and primitive-level editability. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Light-SQ enables efficient, high-fidelity, and editable shape abstraction with superquadrics for complex generated geometry, advancing the feasibility of 3D UGC creation.

Differentially Private In-context Learning via Sampling Few-shot Mixed with Zero-shot Outputs

In-context learning (ICL) has shown promising improvement in downstream task adaptation of LLMs by augmenting prompts with relevant input-output examples (demonstrations). However, the ICL demonstrations can contain privacy-sensitive information, which can be leaked and/or regurgitated by the LLM output. Differential Privacy (DP), a widely adopted privacy safeguard, has emerged to mitigate this privacy leakage, with recent work demonstrating strong privacy-utility tradeoffs in classification tasks for ICL. However, generation tasks for ICL are challenging due to the high-dimensional output space of open-ended generation. To this end, we propose $\texttt{dps-mozo}$, Differentially Private Sampling by Mixing One-shot with Zero-shot Outputs, a decoding framework that generates DP text by sampling from the product of multiple one-shot outputs mixed with a zero-shot output. This mixing effectively reduces the amount of information that can be leaked by each demonstration. By utilizing the inherent randomness in sampling from the mixed distributions, we can achieve DP without adding noise, thereby improving the privacy-utility tradeoff. Our experimental evaluations show $\texttt{dps-mozo}$ can achieve a strong privacy guarantee, $ε=2$, with minimal utility degradation compared to non-private few-shot learning, $\textbf{0.3}$% ROUGE-L F1 score decrease on the SAMSum dataset with Gemma 2 2B.

Learning Hyperplane Tree: A Piecewise Linear and Fully Interpretable Decision-making Framework

This paper introduces a novel tree-based model, Learning Hyperplane Tree (LHT), which outperforms state-of-the-art (SOTA) tree models for classification tasks on several public datasets. The structure of LHT is simple and efficient: it partitions the data using several hyperplanes to progressively distinguish between target and non-target class samples. Although the separation is not perfect at each stage, LHT effectively improves the distinction through successive partitions. During testing, a sample is classified by evaluating the hyperplanes defined in the branching blocks and traversing down the tree until it reaches the corresponding leaf block. The class of the test sample is then determined using the piecewise linear membership function defined in the leaf blocks, which is derived through least-squares fitting and fuzzy logic. LHT is highly transparent and interpretable--at each branching block, the contribution of each feature to the classification can be clearly observed.

A Convergent ADMM Framework for Efficient Neural Network Training

As a well-known optimization framework, the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) has achieved tremendous success in many classification and regression applications. Recently, it has attracted the attention of deep learning researchers and is considered to be a potential substitute to Gradient Descent (GD). However, as an emerging domain, several challenges remain unsolved, including 1) The lack of global convergence guarantees, 2) Slow convergence towards solutions, and 3) Cubic time complexity with regard to feature dimensions. In this paper, we propose a novel optimization framework to solve a general neural network training problem via ADMM (dlADMM) to address these challenges simultaneously. Specifically, the parameters in each layer are updated backward and then forward so that parameter information in each layer is exchanged efficiently. When the dlADMM is applied to specific architectures, the time complexity of subproblems is reduced from cubic to quadratic via a dedicated algorithm design utilizing quadratic approximations and backtracking techniques. Last but not least, we provide the first proof of convergence to a critical point sublinearly for an ADMM-type method (dlADMM) under mild conditions. Experiments on seven benchmark datasets demonstrate the convergence, efficiency, and effectiveness of our proposed dlADMM algorithm.

Community-based Layerwise Distributed Training of Graph Convolutional Networks

The Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) has been successfully applied to many graph-based applications. Training a large-scale GCN model, however, is still challenging: Due to the node dependency and layer dependency of the GCN architecture, a huge amount of computational time and memory is required in the training process. In this paper, we propose a parallel and distributed GCN training algorithm based on the Alternating Direction Method of Multipliers (ADMM) to tackle the two challenges simultaneously. We first split GCN layers into independent blocks to achieve layer parallelism. Furthermore, we reduce node dependency by dividing the graph into several dense communities such that each of them can be trained with an agent in parallel. Finally, we provide solutions for all subproblems in the community-based ADMM algorithm. Preliminary results demonstrate that our proposed community-based ADMM training algorithm can lead to more than triple speedup while achieving the best performance compared with state-of-the-art methods.
