MasakhaNER 2.0: Africa-centric Transfer Learning for Named Entity RecognitionDavid Ifeoluwa Adelani, Graham Neubig, Sebastian Ruder et al. · mila
African languages are spoken by over a billion people, but are underrepresented in NLP research and development. The challenges impeding progress include the limited availability of annotated datasets, as well as a lack of understanding of the settings where current methods are effective. In this paper, we make progress towards solutions for these challenges, focusing on the task of named entity recognition (NER). We create the largest human-annotated NER dataset for 20 African languages, and we study the behavior of state-of-the-art cross-lingual transfer methods in an Africa-centric setting, demonstrating that the choice of source language significantly affects performance. We show that choosing the best transfer language improves zero-shot F1 scores by an average of 14 points across 20 languages compared to using English. Our results highlight the need for benchmark datasets and models that cover typologically-diverse African languages.

High-resource language models often fall short in the African context, where there is a critical need for models that are efficient, accessible, and locally relevant, even amidst significant computing and data constraints. This paper introduces InkubaLM, a small language model with 0.4 billion parameters, which achieves performance comparable to models with significantly larger parameter counts and more extensive training data on tasks such as machine translation, question-answering, AfriMMLU, and the AfriXnli task. Notably, InkubaLM outperforms many larger models in sentiment analysis and demonstrates remarkable consistency across multiple languages. This work represents a pivotal advancement in challenging the conventional paradigm that effective language models must rely on substantial resources. Our model and datasets are publicly available at https://huggingface.co/lelapa to encourage research and development on low-resource languages.

AfriScience-MT: Towards Decolonizing Science in Africa through Text TranslationIdris Abdulmumin, Tajuddeen Gwadabe, Shamsuddeen Hassan Muhammad et al.
The dominance of colonial languages in African education and scientific communication limits how hundreds of millions of speakers of African languages access and produce scientific knowledge. A core obstacle is the lack of established scientific terminology in these languages. We introduce AfriScience-MT, a parallel corpus covering six African languages (Amharic, Hausa, Luganda, Northern Sotho, Yorùbá, and isiZulu) across 11 scientific domains. Professional translators, working with expert science communicators, translated plain-language summaries of scientific papers into each target language and created new terms where none existed. We benchmark machine translation systems and large language models in zero-shot, few-shot, and fine-tuned settings. Our results show that closed-source models outperform all open-source models at both the sentence and document levels: GPT-5.4 and Gemini-3.1-Flash-Lite lead with average sentence-level COMET scores of 68.3 and 68.0, respectively, and tie at an average document-level COMET of 48.3. Among open systems, fine-tuned NLLB-1.3B reaches 67.3 at the sentence level, and TranslateGemma-12B reaches 44.0 at the document level with 1-shot in-context learning. We release AfriScience-MT to support benchmarking and document-level scientific MT for African languages.

Conversational Pattern Mining using Motif DetectionNicolle Garber, Vukosi Marivate
The subject of conversational mining has become of great interest recently due to the explosion of social and other online media. Supplementing this explosion of text is the advancement in pre-trained language models which have helped us to leverage these sources of information. An interesting domain to analyse is conversations in terms of complexity and value. Complexity arises due to the fact that a conversation can be asynchronous and can involve multiple parties. It is also computationally intensive to process. We use unsupervised methods in our work in order to develop a conversational pattern mining technique which does not require time consuming, knowledge demanding and resource intensive labelling exercises. The task of identifying repeating patterns in sequences is well researched in the Bioinformatics field. In our work, we adapt this to the field of Natural Language Processing and make several extensions to a motif detection algorithm. In order to demonstrate the application of the algorithm on a dynamic, real world data set; we extract motifs from an open-source film script data source. We run an exploratory investigation into the types of motifs we are able to mine.

MphayaNER: Named Entity Recognition for TshivendaRendani Mbuvha, David I. Adelani, Tendani Mutavhatsindi et al.
Named Entity Recognition (NER) plays a vital role in various Natural Language Processing tasks such as information retrieval, text classification, and question answering. However, NER can be challenging, especially in low-resource languages with limited annotated datasets and tools. This paper adds to the effort of addressing these challenges by introducing MphayaNER, the first Tshivenda NER corpus in the news domain. We establish NER baselines by \textit{fine-tuning} state-of-the-art models on MphayaNER. The study also explores zero-shot transfer between Tshivenda and other related Bantu languages, with chiShona and Kiswahili showing the best results. Augmenting MphayaNER with chiShona data was also found to improve model performance significantly. Both MphayaNER and the baseline models are made publicly available.

Temporal Simultaneity Predicts Annotation Quality in Sentiment CorporaIdris Abdulmumin, Mokgadi Penelope Matloga, Tadesse Destaw Belay et al.
Annotation quality is difficult to sustain when campaigns span weeks or months with small annotator pools. We present a Setswana sentiment dataset of 3,565 tweets annotated by three native-speaker annotators across eight batches and examine why inter-annotator agreement (IAA) declines over time. Despite an aggregate Randolph's free-marginal Kappa of $κ= 0.76$, "excellent," per-batch $κ$ falls by more than 32 points across the annotation task. Through six targeted analyses, we find that (i) label confusion concentrates on the negative/neutral boundary, (ii) two annotators show run-length drift consistent with autopilot labeling, and (iii) the dominant predictor of $κ$ is temporal simultaneity: tweets labeled within one minute achieve $κ= 0.98$, while those labeled more than a day apart reach only $κ= 0.65$. Annotation speed and tweet-level linguistic features show no meaningful association with $κ$. We benchmark three open multilingual encoders and proprietary models (GPT-5 and Gemini) on three-class sentiment classification; fine-tuning yields gains of 29 to 43 macro-F1 points over pretrained baselines, with GPT-5 few-shot leading overall (62.2 macro-F1). We release the dataset, per-annotation timestamps, and analysis code to support reproducible quality auditing for future African language NLP resources.

Correcting FLORES Evaluation Dataset for Four African LanguagesIdris Abdulmumin, Sthembiso Mkhwanazi, Mahlatse S. Mbooi et al.
This paper describes the corrections made to the FLORES evaluation (dev and devtest) dataset for four African languages, namely Hausa, Northern Sotho (Sepedi), Xitsonga, and isiZulu. The original dataset, though groundbreaking in its coverage of low-resource languages, exhibited various inconsistencies and inaccuracies in the reviewed languages that could potentially hinder the integrity of the evaluation of downstream tasks in natural language processing (NLP), especially machine translation. Through a meticulous review process by native speakers, several corrections were identified and implemented, improving the overall quality and reliability of the dataset. For each language, we provide a concise summary of the errors encountered and corrected and also present some statistical analysis that measures the difference between the existing and corrected datasets. We believe that our corrections improve the linguistic accuracy and reliability of the data and, thereby, contribute to a more effective evaluation of NLP tasks involving the four African languages. Finally, we recommend that future translation efforts, particularly in low-resource languages, prioritize the active involvement of native speakers at every stage of the process to ensure linguistic accuracy and cultural relevance.

Advances in reinforcement learning research have demonstrated the ways in which different agent-based models can learn how to optimally perform a task within a given environment. Reinforcement leaning solves unsupervised problems where agents move through a state-action-reward loop to maximize the overall reward for the agent, which in turn optimizes the solving of a specific problem in a given environment. However, these algorithms are designed based on our understanding of actions that should be taken in a real-world environment to solve a specific problem. One such problem is the ability to identify, recommend and execute an action within a system where the users are the subject, such as in education. In recent years, the use of blended learning approaches integrating face-to-face learning with online learning in the education context, has in-creased. Additionally, online platforms used for education require the automation of certain functions such as the identification, recommendation or execution of actions that can benefit the user, in this sense, the student or learner. As promising as these scientific advances are, there is still a need to conduct research in a variety of different areas to ensure the successful deployment of these agents within education systems. Therefore, the aim of this study was to contextualise and simulate the cumulative reward within an environment for an intervention recommendation problem in the education context.

Preparing the Vuk'uzenzele and ZA-gov-multilingual South African multilingual corporaRichard Lastrucci, Isheanesu Dzingirai, Jenalea Rajab et al.
This paper introduces two multilingual government themed corpora in various South African languages. The corpora were collected by gathering the South African Government newspaper (Vuk'uzenzele), as well as South African government speeches (ZA-gov-multilingual), that are translated into all 11 South African official languages. The corpora can be used for a myriad of downstream NLP tasks. The corpora were created to allow researchers to study the language used in South African government publications, with a focus on understanding how South African government officials communicate with their constituents. In this paper we highlight the process of gathering, cleaning and making available the corpora. We create parallel sentence corpora for Neural Machine Translation (NMT) tasks using Language-Agnostic Sentence Representations (LASER) embeddings. With these aligned sentences we then provide NMT benchmarks for 9 indigenous languages by fine-tuning a massively multilingual pre-trained language model.

PuoBERTa: Training and evaluation of a curated language model for SetswanaVukosi Marivate, Moseli Mots'Oehli, Valencia Wagner et al.
Natural language processing (NLP) has made significant progress for well-resourced languages such as English but lagged behind for low-resource languages like Setswana. This paper addresses this gap by presenting PuoBERTa, a customised masked language model trained specifically for Setswana. We cover how we collected, curated, and prepared diverse monolingual texts to generate a high-quality corpus for PuoBERTa's training. Building upon previous efforts in creating monolingual resources for Setswana, we evaluated PuoBERTa across several NLP tasks, including part-of-speech (POS) tagging, named entity recognition (NER), and news categorisation. Additionally, we introduced a new Setswana news categorisation dataset and provided the initial benchmarks using PuoBERTa. Our work demonstrates the efficacy of PuoBERTa in fostering NLP capabilities for understudied languages like Setswana and paves the way for future research directions.

Comparing Synthetic Tabular Data Generation Between a Probabilistic Model and a Deep Learning Model for Education Use CasesHerkulaas MvE Combrink, Vukosi Marivate, Benjamin Rosman
The ability to generate synthetic data has a variety of use cases across different domains. In education research, there is a growing need to have access to synthetic data to test certain concepts and ideas. In recent years, several deep learning architectures were used to aid in the generation of synthetic data but with varying results. In the education context, the sophistication of implementing different models requiring large datasets is becoming very important. This study aims to compare the application of synthetic tabular data generation between a probabilistic model specifically a Bayesian Network, and a deep learning model, specifically a Generative Adversarial Network using a classification task. The results of this study indicate that synthetic tabular data generation is better suited for the education context using probabilistic models (overall accuracy of 75%) than deep learning architecture (overall accuracy of 38%) because of probabilistic interdependence. Lastly, we recommend that other data types, should be explored and evaluated for their application in generating synthetic data for education use cases.

Investigating the Efficacy of Large Language Models in Reflective Assessment Methods through Chain of Thoughts PromptingBaphumelele Masikisiki, Vukosi Marivate, Yvette Hlope
Large Language Models, such as Generative Pre-trained Transformer 3 (aka. GPT-3), have been developed to understand language through the analysis of extensive text data, allowing them to identify patterns and connections between words. While LLMs have demonstrated impressive performance across various text-related tasks, they encounter challenges in tasks associated with reasoning. To address this challenge, Chain of Thought(CoT) prompting method has been proposed as a means to enhance LLMs' proficiency in complex reasoning tasks like solving math word problems and answering questions based on logical argumentative reasoning. The primary aim of this research is to assess how well four language models can grade reflective essays of third-year medical students. The assessment will specifically target the evaluation of critical thinking skills using CoT prompting. The research will provide the following contributions; to introduce and educate on the process of instructing models to evaluate reflective essays from a dataset they have not been previously trained on; to illustrate the use of CoT prompting as an instructional approach for training large models to carry out particular tasks. Our results suggest that among all the models, Llama-7b performs the least effectively, displaying the highest mean squared error. Conversely, ChatGPT emerges as the superior model, boasting a higher Cohen kappa score value of 0.53. Lastly, it's important to note that the selected models do prioritise user privacy by allowing users to delete their own conducted conversations.

Integrating Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory with Subword Embedding for Authorship AttributionAbiodun Modupe, Turgay Celik, Vukosi Marivate et al.
The problem of unveiling the author of a given text document from multiple candidate authors is called authorship attribution. Manifold word-based stylistic markers have been successfully used in deep learning methods to deal with the intrinsic problem of authorship attribution. Unfortunately, the performance of word-based authorship attribution systems is limited by the vocabulary of the training corpus. Literature has recommended character-based stylistic markers as an alternative to overcome the hidden word problem. However, character-based methods often fail to capture the sequential relationship of words in texts which is a chasm for further improvement. The question addressed in this paper is whether it is possible to address the ambiguity of hidden words in text documents while preserving the sequential context of words. Consequently, a method based on bidirectional long short-term memory (BLSTM) with a 2-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to capture sequential writing styles for authorship attribution. The BLSTM was used to obtain the sequential relationship among characteristics using subword information. The 2-dimensional CNN was applied to understand the local syntactical position of the style from unlabeled input text. The proposed method was experimentally evaluated against numerous state-of-the-art methods across the public corporal of CCAT50, IMDb62, Blog50, and Twitter50. Experimental results indicate accuracy improvement of 1.07\%, and 0.96\% on CCAT50 and Twitter, respectively, and produce comparable results on the remaining datasets.

Cross-lingual transfer of multilingual models on low resource African LanguagesHarish Thangaraj, Ananya Chenat, Jaskaran Singh Walia et al.
Large multilingual models have significantly advanced natural language processing (NLP) research. However, their high resource demands and potential biases from diverse data sources have raised concerns about their effectiveness across low-resource languages. In contrast, monolingual models, trained on a single language, may better capture the nuances of the target language, potentially providing more accurate results. This study benchmarks the cross-lingual transfer capabilities from a high-resource language to a low-resource language for both, monolingual and multilingual models, focusing on Kinyarwanda and Kirundi, two Bantu languages. We evaluate the performance of transformer based architectures like Multilingual BERT (mBERT), AfriBERT, and BantuBERTa against neural-based architectures such as BiGRU, CNN, and char-CNN. The models were trained on Kinyarwanda and tested on Kirundi, with fine-tuning applied to assess the extent of performance improvement and catastrophic forgetting. AfriBERT achieved the highest cross-lingual accuracy of 88.3% after fine-tuning, while BiGRU emerged as the best-performing neural model with 83.3% accuracy. We also analyze the degree of forgetting in the original language post-fine-tuning. While monolingual models remain competitive, this study highlights that multilingual models offer strong cross-lingual transfer capabilities in resource limited settings.

Understanding which student support strategies mitigate dropout and improve student retention is an important part of modern higher educational research. One of the largest challenges institutions of higher learning currently face is the scalability of student support. Part of this is due to the shortage of staff addressing the needs of students, and the subsequent referral pathways associated to provide timeous student support strategies. This is further complicated by the difficulty of these referrals, especially as students are often faced with a combination of administrative, academic, social, and socio-economic challenges. A possible solution to this problem can be a combination of student outcome predictions and applying algorithmic recommender systems within the context of higher education. While much effort and detail has gone into the expansion of explaining algorithmic decision making in this context, there is still a need to develop data collection strategies Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to outline a data collection framework specific to recommender systems within this context in order to reduce collection biases, understand student characteristics, and find an ideal way to infer optimal influences on the student journey. If confirmation biases, challenges in data sparsity and the type of information to collect from students are not addressed, it will have detrimental effects on attempts to assess and evaluate the effects of these systems within higher education.

Textual Augmentation Techniques Applied to Low Resource Machine Translation: Case of SwahiliCatherine Gitau, VUkosi Marivate
In this work we investigate the impact of applying textual data augmentation tasks to low resource machine translation. There has been recent interest in investigating approaches for training systems for languages with limited resources and one popular approach is the use of data augmentation techniques. Data augmentation aims to increase the quantity of data that is available to train the system. In machine translation, majority of the language pairs around the world are considered low resource because they have little parallel data available and the quality of neural machine translation (NMT) systems depend a lot on the availability of sizable parallel corpora. We study and apply three simple data augmentation techniques popularly used in text classification tasks; synonym replacement, random insertion and contextual data augmentation and compare their performance with baseline neural machine translation for English-Swahili (En-Sw) datasets. We also present results in BLEU, ChrF and Meteor scores. Overall, the contextual data augmentation technique shows some improvements both in the $EN \rightarrow SW$ and $SW \rightarrow EN$ directions. We see that there is potential to use these methods in neural machine translation when more extensive experiments are done with diverse datasets.

Semi-supervised learning approaches for predicting South African political sentiment for local government electionsMashadi Ledwaba, Vukosi Marivate
This study aims to understand the South African political context by analysing the sentiments shared on Twitter during the local government elections. An emphasis on the analysis was placed on understanding the discussions led around four predominant political parties ANC, DA, EFF and ActionSA. A semi-supervised approach by means of a graph-based technique to label the vast accessible Twitter data for the classification of tweets into negative and positive sentiment was used. The tweets expressing negative sentiment were further analysed through latent topic extraction to uncover hidden topics of concern associated with each of the political parties. Our findings demonstrated that the general sentiment across South African Twitter users is negative towards all four predominant parties with the worst negative sentiment among users projected towards the current ruling party, ANC, relating to concerns cantered around corruption, incompetence and loadshedding.

Pula: Training Large Language Models for SetswanaNathan Brown, Vukosi Marivate
In this work we present Pula, a suite of bilingual language models proficient in both Setswana and English. Leveraging recent advancements in data availability and efficient fine-tuning, Pula 8B and Pula 14B outperform GPT-4o and Gemini 1.5 Pro on English-Setswana translation tasks and achieve state-of-the-art performance on Setswana reasoning tasks for their size. We release the weights for Pula 1B, 3B, 8B, and 14B as well as training logs and training and evaluation code. Alongside Pula, we release the largest-ever Setswana text corpus, Marothodi, and the first comprehensive Setswana instruction-tuning dataset, Medupi, consisting of reformatted datasets, translated corpora, and synthetic LLM-generated text. To accompany this data, we release the code used for dataset construction, formatting, filtering, and scraping. Last, we release two Setswana LLM-translated benchmarks, MMLU-tsn and GSM8K-tsn, to measure Setswana knowledge and reasoning capabilities.

Izindaba-Tindzaba: Machine learning news categorisation for Long and Short Text for isiZulu and SiswatiAndani Madodonga, Vukosi Marivate, Matthew Adendorff
Local/Native South African languages are classified as low-resource languages. As such, it is essential to build the resources for these languages so that they can benefit from advances in the field of natural language processing. In this work, the focus was to create annotated news datasets for the isiZulu and Siswati native languages based on news topic classification tasks and present the findings from these baseline classification models. Due to the shortage of data for these native South African languages, the datasets that were created were augmented and oversampled to increase data size and overcome class classification imbalance. In total, four different classification models were used namely Logistic regression, Naive bayes, XGBoost and LSTM. These models were trained on three different word embeddings namely Bag-Of-Words, TFIDF and Word2vec. The results of this study showed that XGBoost, Logistic Regression and LSTM, trained from Word2vec performed better than the other combinations.

The Annotation Scarcity Paradox in Low-Resource NLP Evaluation: A Decade of Acceleration and Emerging ConstraintsVukosi Marivate
Over the past decade, low-resource natural language processing (NLP) has experienced explosive growth, propelled by cross-lingual transfer, massively multilingual models, and the rapid proliferation of benchmarks. Yet this apparent progress masks a critical, insufficiently examined tension: the deep sociolinguistic expertise required to evaluate increasingly complex generative systems is severely strained, inequitably distributed, and structurally marginalised. We present a critical narrative survey of low-resource NLP evaluation (2014--present), tracing its evolution across three phases: early heuristic optimism, the illusions of top-down benchmark scaling, and the current era of generative bottlenecks. We conceptualise the \emph{Annotation Scarcity Paradox}, the structural friction arising when the technical capacity to scale models vastly outpaces the sovereign human infrastructure required to authentically evaluate them. By examining extractive data pipelines, undercompensated ``ghost work'', and language data flaring, we argue that this paradox threatens the epistemic validity of reported progress. We survey emerging responses -- including data augmentation, model-based evaluation, participatory curation, and annotation-efficient approaches via item response theory and active learning -- and assess their equity and validity trade-offs. We close with a practitioner call to action, arguing that overcoming this bottleneck requires a paradigm shift from transactional data extraction to relational, community-embedded evaluation rooted in epistemic governance, data sovereignty, and shared ownership.

HausaNLP: Current Status, Challenges and Future Directions for Hausa Natural Language ProcessingShamsuddeen Hassan Muhammad, Ibrahim Said Ahmad, Idris Abdulmumin et al.
Hausa Natural Language Processing (NLP) has gained increasing attention in recent years, yet remains understudied as a low-resource language despite having over 120 million first-language (L1) and 80 million second-language (L2) speakers worldwide. While significant advances have been made in high-resource languages, Hausa NLP faces persistent challenges, including limited open-source datasets and inadequate model representation. This paper presents an overview of the current state of Hausa NLP, systematically examining existing resources, research contributions, and gaps across fundamental NLP tasks: text classification, machine translation, named entity recognition, speech recognition, and question answering. We introduce HausaNLP (https://catalog.hausanlp.org), a curated catalog that aggregates datasets, tools, and research works to enhance accessibility and drive further development. Furthermore, we discuss challenges in integrating Hausa into large language models (LLMs), addressing issues of suboptimal tokenization and dialectal variation. Finally, we propose strategic research directions emphasizing dataset expansion, improved language modeling approaches, and strengthened community collaboration to advance Hausa NLP. Our work provides both a foundation for accelerating Hausa NLP progress and valuable insights for broader multilingual NLP research.

The Esethu Framework: Reimagining Sustainable Dataset Governance and Curation for Low-Resource LanguagesJenalea Rajab, Anuoluwapo Aremu, Everlyn Asiko Chimoto et al.
This paper presents the Esethu Framework, a sustainable data curation framework specifically designed to empower local communities and ensure equitable benefit-sharing from their linguistic resource. This framework is supported by the Esethu license, a novel community-centric data license. As a proof of concept, we introduce the Vuk'uzenzele isiXhosa Speech Dataset (ViXSD), an open-source corpus developed under the Esethu Framework and License. The dataset, containing read speech from native isiXhosa speakers enriched with demographic and linguistic metadata, demonstrates how community-driven licensing and curation principles can bridge resource gaps in automatic speech recognition (ASR) for African languages while safeguarding the interests of data creators. We describe the framework guiding dataset development, outline the Esethu license provisions, present the methodology for ViXSD, and present ASR experiments validating ViXSD's usability in building and refining voice-driven applications for isiXhosa.

Data augmentation is an important component in the robustness evaluation of models in natural language processing (NLP) and in enhancing the diversity of the data they are trained on. In this paper, we present NL-Augmenter, a new participatory Python-based natural language augmentation framework which supports the creation of both transformations (modifications to the data) and filters (data splits according to specific features). We describe the framework and an initial set of 117 transformations and 23 filters for a variety of natural language tasks. We demonstrate the efficacy of NL-Augmenter by using several of its transformations to analyze the robustness of popular natural language models. The infrastructure, datacards and robustness analysis results are available publicly on the NL-Augmenter repository (https://github.com/GEM-benchmark/NL-Augmenter).

Sentiment analysis as a sub-field of natural language processing has received increased attention in the past decade enabling organisations to more effectively manage their reputation through online media monitoring. Many drivers impact reputation, however, this thesis focuses only the aspect of financial performance and explores the gap with regards to financial sentiment analysis in a South African context. Results showed that pre-trained sentiment analysers are least effective for this task and that traditional lexicon-based and machine learning approaches are best suited to predict financial sentiment of news articles. The evaluated methods produced accuracies of 84\%-94\%. The predicted sentiments correlated quite well with share price and highlighted the potential use of sentiment as an indicator of financial performance. A main contribution of the study was updating an existing sentiment dictionary for financial sentiment analysis. Model generalisation was less acceptable due to the limited amount of training data used. Future work includes expanding the data set to improve general usability and contribute to an open-source financial sentiment analyser for South African data.

Advances in speech and language technologies enable tools such as voice-search, text-to-speech, speech recognition and machine translation. These are however only available for high resource languages like English, French or Chinese. Without foundational digital resources for African languages, which are considered low-resource in the digital context, these advanced tools remain out of reach. This work details the AI4D - African Language Program, a 3-part project that 1) incentivised the crowd-sourcing, collection and curation of language datasets through an online quantitative and qualitative challenge, 2) supported research fellows for a period of 3-4 months to create datasets annotated for NLP tasks, and 3) hosted competitive Machine Learning challenges on the basis of these datasets. Key outcomes of the work so far include 1) the creation of 9+ open source, African language datasets annotated for a variety of ML tasks, and 2) the creation of baseline models for these datasets through hosting of competitive ML challenges.

Participatory Research for Low-resourced Machine Translation: A Case Study in African LanguagesWilhelmina Nekoto, Vukosi Marivate, Tshinondiwa Matsila et al.
Research in NLP lacks geographic diversity, and the question of how NLP can be scaled to low-resourced languages has not yet been adequately solved. "Low-resourced"-ness is a complex problem going beyond data availability and reflects systemic problems in society. In this paper, we focus on the task of Machine Translation (MT), that plays a crucial role for information accessibility and communication worldwide. Despite immense improvements in MT over the past decade, MT is centered around a few high-resourced languages. As MT researchers cannot solve the problem of low-resourcedness alone, we propose participatory research as a means to involve all necessary agents required in the MT development process. We demonstrate the feasibility and scalability of participatory research with a case study on MT for African languages. Its implementation leads to a collection of novel translation datasets, MT benchmarks for over 30 languages, with human evaluations for a third of them, and enables participants without formal training to make a unique scientific contribution. Africa has over 2000 languages. Despite this, African languages account for a small portion of available resources and publications in Natural Language Processing (NLP). This is due to multiple factors, including: a lack of focus from government and funding, discoverability, a lack of community, sheer language complexity, difficulty in reproducing papers and no benchmarks to compare techniques. To begin to address the identified problems, MASAKHANE, an open-source, continent-wide, distributed, online research effort for machine translation for African languages, was founded. In this paper, we discuss our methodology for building the community and spurring research from the African continent, as well as outline the success of the community in terms of addressing the identified problems affecting African NLP.

BRIGHTER: BRIdging the Gap in Human-Annotated Textual Emotion Recognition Datasets for 28 LanguagesShamsuddeen Hassan Muhammad, Nedjma Ousidhoum, Idris Abdulmumin et al.
People worldwide use language in subtle and complex ways to express emotions. Although emotion recognition--an umbrella term for several NLP tasks--impacts various applications within NLP and beyond, most work in this area has focused on high-resource languages. This has led to significant disparities in research efforts and proposed solutions, particularly for under-resourced languages, which often lack high-quality annotated datasets. In this paper, we present BRIGHTER--a collection of multi-labeled, emotion-annotated datasets in 28 different languages and across several domains. BRIGHTER primarily covers low-resource languages from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America, with instances labeled by fluent speakers. We highlight the challenges related to the data collection and annotation processes, and then report experimental results for monolingual and crosslingual multi-label emotion identification, as well as emotion intensity recognition. We analyse the variability in performance across languages and text domains, both with and without the use of LLMs, and show that the BRIGHTER datasets represent a meaningful step towards addressing the gap in text-based emotion recognition.

This white paper is the output of a multidisciplinary workshop in Nairobi (Nov 2023). Led by a cross-organisational team including Microsoft Research, NEPAD, Lelapa AI, and University of Oxford. The workshop brought together diverse thought-leaders from various sectors and backgrounds to discuss the implications of Generative AI for the future of work in Africa. Discussions centred around four key themes: Macroeconomic Impacts; Jobs, Skills and Labour Markets; Workers' Perspectives and Africa-Centris AI Platforms. The white paper provides an overview of the current state and trends of generative AI and its applications in different domains, as well as the challenges and risks associated with its adoption and regulation. It represents a diverse set of perspectives to create a set of insights and recommendations which aim to encourage debate and collaborative action towards creating a dignified future of work for everyone across Africa.

From N-grams to Pre-trained Multilingual Models For Language IdentificationThapelo Sindane, Vukosi Marivate
In this paper, we investigate the use of N-gram models and Large Pre-trained Multilingual models for Language Identification (LID) across 11 South African languages. For N-gram models, this study shows that effective data size selection remains crucial for establishing effective frequency distributions of the target languages, that efficiently model each language, thus, improving language ranking. For pre-trained multilingual models, we conduct extensive experiments covering a diverse set of massively pre-trained multilingual (PLM) models -- mBERT, RemBERT, XLM-r, and Afri-centric multilingual models -- AfriBERTa, Afro-XLMr, AfroLM, and Serengeti. We further compare these models with available large-scale Language Identification tools: Compact Language Detector v3 (CLD V3), AfroLID, GlotLID, and OpenLID to highlight the importance of focused-based LID. From these, we show that Serengeti is a superior model across models: N-grams to Transformers on average. Moreover, we propose a lightweight BERT-based LID model (za_BERT_lid) trained with NHCLT + Vukzenzele corpus, which performs on par with our best-performing Afri-centric models.

Prompting Towards Alleviating Code-Switched Data Scarcity in Under-Resourced Languages with GPT as a PivotMichelle Terblanche, Kayode Olaleye, Vukosi Marivate
Many multilingual communities, including numerous in Africa, frequently engage in code-switching during conversations. This behaviour stresses the need for natural language processing technologies adept at processing code-switched text. However, data scarcity, particularly in African languages, poses a significant challenge, as many are low-resourced and under-represented. In this study, we prompted GPT 3.5 to generate Afrikaans--English and Yoruba--English code-switched sentences, enhancing diversity using topic-keyword pairs, linguistic guidelines, and few-shot examples. Our findings indicate that the quality of generated sentences for languages using non-Latin scripts, like Yoruba, is considerably lower when compared with the high Afrikaans-English success rate. There is therefore a notable opportunity to refine prompting guidelines to yield sentences suitable for the fine-tuning of language models. We propose a framework for augmenting the diversity of synthetically generated code-switched data using GPT and propose leveraging this technology to mitigate data scarcity in low-resourced languages, underscoring the essential role of native speakers in this process.

Due to the lack of quality data for low-resource Bantu languages, significant challenges are presented in text classification and other practical implementations. In this paper, we introduce an advanced model combining Language-Independent Data Augmentation (LiDA) with Multi-Head Attention based weighted embeddings to selectively enhance critical data points and improve text classification performance. This integration allows us to create robust data augmentation strategies that are effective across various linguistic contexts, ensuring that our model can handle the unique syntactic and semantic features of Bantu languages. This approach not only addresses the data scarcity issue but also sets a foundation for future research in low-resource language processing and classification tasks.

Multimodal Misinformation Detection in a South African Social Media EnvironmentAmica De Jager, Vukosi Marivate, Abioudun Modupe
With the constant spread of misinformation on social media networks, a need has arisen to continuously assess the veracity of digital content. This need has inspired numerous research efforts on the development of misinformation detection (MD) models. However, many models do not use all information available to them and existing research contains a lack of relevant datasets to train the models, specifically within the South African social media environment. The aim of this paper is to investigate the transferability of knowledge of a MD model between different contextual environments. This research contributes a multimodal MD model capable of functioning in the South African social media environment, as well as introduces a South African misinformation dataset. The model makes use of multiple sources of information for misinformation detection, namely: textual and visual elements. It uses bidirectional encoder representations from transformers (BERT) as the textual encoder and a residual network (ResNet) as the visual encoder. The model is trained and evaluated on the Fakeddit dataset and a South African misinformation dataset. Results show that using South African samples in the training of the model increases model performance, in a South African contextual environment, and that a multimodal model retains significantly more knowledge than both the textual and visual unimodal models. Our study suggests that the performance of a misinformation detection model is influenced by the cultural nuances of its operating environment and multimodal models assist in the transferability of knowledge between different contextual environments. Therefore, local data should be incorporated into the training process of a misinformation detection model in order to optimize model performance.

CommonLID: Re-evaluating State-of-the-Art Language Identification Performance on Web DataPedro Ortiz Suarez, Laurie Burchell, Catherine Arnett et al.
Language identification (LID) is a fundamental step in curating multilingual corpora. However, LID models still perform poorly for many languages, especially on the noisy and heterogeneous web data often used to train multilingual language models. In this paper, we introduce CommonLID, a community-driven, human-annotated LID benchmark for the web domain, covering 109 languages. Many of the included languages have been previously under-served, making CommonLID a key resource for developing more representative high-quality text corpora. We show CommonLID's value by using it, alongside five other common evaluation sets, to test eight popular LID models. We analyse our results to situate our contribution and to provide an overview of the state of the art. In particular, we highlight that existing evaluations overestimate LID accuracy for many languages in the web domain. We make CommonLID and the code used to create it available under an open, permissive license.

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is undergoing constant transformation, as Large Language Models (LLMs) are driving daily breakthroughs in research and practice. In this regard, tracking the progress of NLP research and automatically analyzing the contributions of research papers provides key insights into the nature of the field and the researchers. This study explores the progress of African NLP (AfricaNLP) by asking (and answering) basic research questions such as: i) How has the nature of NLP evolved over the last two decades?, ii) What are the contributions of AfricaNLP papers?, and iii) Which individuals and organizations (authors, affiliated institutions, and funding bodies) have been involved in the development of AfricaNLP? We quantitatively examine the contributions of AfricaNLP research using 1.9K NLP paper abstracts, 4.9K author contributors, and 7.8K human-annotated contribution sentences (AfricaNLPContributions) along with benchmark results. Our dataset and continuously existing NLP progress tracking website provide a powerful lens for tracing AfricaNLP research trends and hold potential for generating data-driven literature surveys.

Mafoko: Structuring and Building Open Multilingual Terminologies for South African NLPVukosi Marivate, Isheanesu Dzingirai, Fiskani Banda et al.
The critical lack of structured terminological data for South Africa's official languages hampers progress in multilingual NLP, despite the existence of numerous government and academic terminology lists. These valuable assets remain fragmented and locked in non-machine-readable formats, rendering them unusable for computational research and development. Mafoko addresses this challenge by systematically aggregating, cleaning, and standardising these scattered resources into open, interoperable datasets. We introduce the foundational Mafoko dataset, released under the equitable, Africa-centered NOODL framework. To demonstrate its immediate utility, we integrate the terminology into a Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipeline. Experiments show substantial improvements in the accuracy and domain-specific consistency of English-to-Tshivenda machine translation for large language models. Mafoko provides a scalable foundation for developing robust and equitable NLP technologies, ensuring South Africa's rich linguistic diversity is represented in the digital age.

This paper presents our findings for SemEval 2025 Task 2, a shared task on entity-aware machine translation (EA-MT). The goal of this task is to develop translation models that can accurately translate English sentences into target languages, with a particular focus on handling named entities, which often pose challenges for MT systems. The task covers 10 target languages with English as the source. In this paper, we describe the different systems we employed, detail our results, and discuss insights gained from our experiments.

AfroXLMR-Comet: Multilingual Knowledge Distillation with Attention Matching for Low-Resource languagesJoshua Sakthivel Raju, Sanjay S, Jaskaran Singh Walia et al.
Language model compression through knowledge distillation has emerged as a promising approach for deploying large language models in resource-constrained environments. However, existing methods often struggle to maintain performance when distilling multilingual models, especially for low-resource languages. In this paper, we present a novel hybrid distillation approach that combines traditional knowledge distillation with a simplified attention matching mechanism, specifically designed for multilingual contexts. Our method introduces an extremely compact student model architecture, significantly smaller than conventional multilingual models. We evaluate our approach on five African languages: Kinyarwanda, Swahili, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. The distilled student model; AfroXLMR-Comet successfully captures both the output distribution and internal attention patterns of a larger teacher model (AfroXLMR-Large) while reducing the model size by over 85%. Experimental results demonstrate that our hybrid approach achieves competitive performance compared to the teacher model, maintaining an accuracy within 85% of the original model's performance while requiring substantially fewer computational resources. Our work provides a practical framework for deploying efficient multilingual models in resource-constrained environments, particularly benefiting applications involving African languages.

Analysing Public Transport User Sentiment on Low Resource Multilingual DataRozina L. Myoya, Vukosi Marivate, Idris Abdulmumin
Public transport systems in many Sub-Saharan countries often receive less attention compared to other sectors, underscoring the need for innovative solutions to improve the Quality of Service (QoS) and overall user experience. This study explored commuter opinion mining to understand sentiments toward existing public transport systems in Kenya, Tanzania, and South Africa. We used a qualitative research design, analysing data from X (formerly Twitter) to assess sentiments across rail, mini-bus taxis, and buses. By leveraging Multilingual Opinion Mining techniques, we addressed the linguistic diversity and code-switching present in our dataset, thus demonstrating the application of Natural Language Processing (NLP) in extracting insights from under-resourced languages. We employed PLMs such as AfriBERTa, AfroXLMR, AfroLM, and PuoBERTa to conduct the sentiment analysis. The results revealed predominantly negative sentiments in South Africa and Kenya, while the Tanzanian dataset showed mainly positive sentiments due to the advertising nature of the tweets. Furthermore, feature extraction using the Word2Vec model and K-Means clustering illuminated semantic relationships and primary themes found within the different datasets. By prioritising the analysis of user experiences and sentiments, this research paves the way for developing more responsive, user-centered public transport systems in Sub-Saharan countries, contributing to the broader goal of improving urban mobility and sustainability.

MasakhaPOS: Part-of-Speech Tagging for Typologically Diverse African LanguagesCheikh M. Bamba Dione, David Adelani, Peter Nabende et al.
In this paper, we present MasakhaPOS, the largest part-of-speech (POS) dataset for 20 typologically diverse African languages. We discuss the challenges in annotating POS for these languages using the UD (universal dependencies) guidelines. We conducted extensive POS baseline experiments using conditional random field and several multilingual pre-trained language models. We applied various cross-lingual transfer models trained with data available in UD. Evaluating on the MasakhaPOS dataset, we show that choosing the best transfer language(s) in both single-source and multi-source setups greatly improves the POS tagging performance of the target languages, in particular when combined with cross-lingual parameter-efficient fine-tuning methods. Crucially, transferring knowledge from a language that matches the language family and morphosyntactic properties seems more effective for POS tagging in unseen languages.

Training Cross-Lingual embeddings for Setswana and SepediMack Makgatho, Vukosi Marivate, Tshephisho Sefara et al.
African languages still lag in the advances of Natural Language Processing techniques, one reason being the lack of representative data, having a technique that can transfer information between languages can help mitigate against the lack of data problem. This paper trains Setswana and Sepedi monolingual word vectors and uses VecMap to create cross-lingual embeddings for Setswana-Sepedi in order to do a cross-lingual transfer. Word embeddings are word vectors that represent words as continuous floating numbers where semantically similar words are mapped to nearby points in n-dimensional space. The idea of word embeddings is based on the distribution hypothesis that states, semantically similar words are distributed in similar contexts (Harris, 1954). Cross-lingual embeddings leverages monolingual embeddings by learning a shared vector space for two separately trained monolingual vectors such that words with similar meaning are represented by similar vectors. In this paper, we investigate cross-lingual embeddings for Setswana-Sepedi monolingual word vector. We use the unsupervised cross lingual embeddings in VecMap to train the Setswana-Sepedi cross-language word embeddings. We evaluate the quality of the Setswana-Sepedi cross-lingual word representation using a semantic evaluation task. For the semantic similarity task, we translated the WordSim and SimLex tasks into Setswana and Sepedi. We release this dataset as part of this work for other researchers. We evaluate the intrinsic quality of the embeddings to determine if there is improvement in the semantic representation of the word embeddings.

This paper is an investigation into aspects of an audio classification pipeline that will be appropriate for the monitoring of bird species on edges devices. These aspects include transfer learning, data augmentation and model optimization. The hope is that the resulting models will be good candidates to deploy on edge devices to monitor bird populations. Two classification approaches will be taken into consideration, one which explores the effectiveness of a traditional Deep Neural Network(DNN) and another that makes use of Convolutional layers.This study aims to contribute empirical evidence of the merits and demerits of each approach.

Is it Fake? News Disinformation Detection on South African News WebsitesHarm de Wet, Vukosi Marivate
Disinformation through fake news is an ongoing problem in our society and has become easily spread through social media. The most cost and time effective way to filter these large amounts of data is to use a combination of human and technical interventions to identify it. From a technical perspective, Natural Language Processing (NLP) is widely used in detecting fake news. Social media companies use NLP techniques to identify the fake news and warn their users, but fake news may still slip through undetected. It is especially a problem in more localised contexts (outside the United States of America). How do we adjust fake news detection systems to work better for local contexts such as in South Africa. In this work we investigate fake news detection on South African websites. We curate a dataset of South African fake news and then train detection models. We contrast this with using widely available fake news datasets (from mostly USA website). We also explore making the datasets more diverse by combining them and observe the differences in behaviour in writing between nations' fake news using interpretable machine learning.

This work details the organisation of the AI4D - African Language Dataset Challenge, an effort to incentivize the creation, organization and discovery of African language datasets through a competitive challenge. We particularly encouraged the submission of annotated datasets which can be used for training task-specific supervised machine learning models.

Social Media can be used to extract discussion topics during a disaster. With the COVID-19 pandemic impact on South Africa, we need to understand how the law and regulation promulgated by the government in response to the pandemic contrasts with discussion topics social media users have been engaging in. In this work, we expand on traditional media analysis by using Social Media discussions driven by or directed to South African government officials. We find topics that are similar as well as different in some cases. The findings can inform further study into social media during disaster settings in South Africa and beyond. This paper sets a framework for future analysis in understanding the opinions of the public during a pandemic and how these opinions can be distilled [in a semi-automated approach] to inform government communication in the future.

Available or adequate information to inform decision making for resource allocation in support of school improvement is a critical issue globally. In this paper, we apply machine learning and education data mining techniques on education big data to identify determinants of high schools' performance in two African countries: South Africa and Sierra Leone. The research objective is to build predictors for school performance and extract the importance of different community and school-level features. We deploy interpretable metrics from machine learning approaches such as SHAP values on tree models and odds ratios of LR to extract interactions of factors that can support policy decision making. Determinants of performance vary in these two countries, hence different policy implications and resource allocation recommendations.

We study the effect of different approaches to text augmentation. To do this we use 3 datasets that include social media and formal text in the form of news articles. Our goal is to provide insights for practitioners and researchers on making choices for augmentation for classification use cases. We observe that Word2vec-based augmentation is a viable option when one does not have access to a formal synonym model (like WordNet-based augmentation). The use of \emph{mixup} further improves performance of all text based augmentations and reduces the effects of overfitting on a tested deep learning model. Round-trip translation with a translation service proves to be harder to use due to cost and as such is less accessible for both normal and low resource use-cases.
