Multiscale Encoder and Omni-Dimensional Dynamic Convolution Enrichment in nnU-Net for Brain Tumor SegmentationSahaj K. Mistry, Sourav Saini, Aashray Gupta et al.
Brain tumor segmentation plays a crucial role in computer-aided diagnosis. This study introduces a novel segmentation algorithm utilizing a modified nnU-Net architecture. Within the nnU-Net architecture's encoder section, we enhance conventional convolution layers by incorporating omni-dimensional dynamic convolution layers, resulting in improved feature representation. Simultaneously, we propose a multi-scale attention strategy that harnesses contemporary insights from various scales. Our model's efficacy is demonstrated on diverse datasets from the BraTS-2023 challenge. Integrating omni-dimensional dynamic convolution (ODConv) layers and multi-scale features yields substantial improvement in the nnU-Net architecture's performance across multiple tumor segmentation datasets. Remarkably, our proposed model attains good accuracy during validation for the BraTS Africa dataset. The ODconv source code along with full training code is available on GitHub.

Multilingual Language Models are not Multicultural: A Case Study in EmotionShreya Havaldar, Sunny Rai, Bhumika Singhal et al.
Emotions are experienced and expressed differently across the world. In order to use Large Language Models (LMs) for multilingual tasks that require emotional sensitivity, LMs must reflect this cultural variation in emotion. In this study, we investigate whether the widely-used multilingual LMs in 2023 reflect differences in emotional expressions across cultures and languages. We find that embeddings obtained from LMs (e.g., XLM-RoBERTa) are Anglocentric, and generative LMs (e.g., ChatGPT) reflect Western norms, even when responding to prompts in other languages. Our results show that multilingual LMs do not successfully learn the culturally appropriate nuances of emotion and we highlight possible research directions towards correcting this.

Detecting Histologic & Clinical Glioblastoma Patterns of Prognostic RelevanceBhakti Baheti, Sunny Rai, Shubham Innani et al.
Glioblastoma is the most common and aggressive malignant adult tumor of the central nervous system, with a grim prognosis and heterogeneous morphologic and molecular profiles. Since adopting the current standard-of-care treatment 18 years ago, no substantial prognostic improvement has been noticed. Accurate prediction of patient overall survival (OS) from histopathology whole slide images (WSI) integrated with clinical data using advanced computational methods could optimize clinical decision-making and patient management. Here, we focus on identifying prognostically relevant glioblastoma characteristics from H&E stained WSI & clinical data relating to OS. The exact approach for WSI capitalizes on the comprehensive curation of apparent artifactual content and an interpretability mechanism via a weakly supervised attention-based multiple-instance learning algorithm that further utilizes clustering to constrain the search space. The automatically placed patterns of high diagnostic value classify each WSI as representative of short or long-survivors. Further assessment of the prognostic relevance of the associated clinical patient data is performed both in isolation and in an integrated manner, using XGBoost and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP). Identifying tumor morphological & clinical patterns associated with short and long OS will enable the clinical neuropathologist to provide additional relevant prognostic information to the treating team and suggest avenues of biological investigation for understanding and potentially treating glioblastoma.

An Integrative Survey on Mental Health Conversational Agents to Bridge Computer Science and Medical PerspectivesYoung Min Cho, Sunny Rai, Lyle Ungar et al.
Mental health conversational agents (a.k.a. chatbots) are widely studied for their potential to offer accessible support to those experiencing mental health challenges. Previous surveys on the topic primarily consider papers published in either computer science or medicine, leading to a divide in understanding and hindering the sharing of beneficial knowledge between both domains. To bridge this gap, we conduct a comprehensive literature review using the PRISMA framework, reviewing 534 papers published in both computer science and medicine. Our systematic review reveals 136 key papers on building mental health-related conversational agents with diverse characteristics of modeling and experimental design techniques. We find that computer science papers focus on LLM techniques and evaluating response quality using automated metrics with little attention to the application while medical papers use rule-based conversational agents and outcome metrics to measure the health outcomes of participants. Based on our findings on transparency, ethics, and cultural heterogeneity in this review, we provide a few recommendations to help bridge the disciplinary divide and enable the cross-disciplinary development of mental health conversational agents.

Uncertainty-Aware Crime Prediction With Spatial Temporal Multivariate Graph Neural NetworksZepu Wang, Xiaobo Ma, Huajie Yang et al.
Crime forecasting is a critical component of urban analysis and essential for stabilizing society today. Unlike other time series forecasting problems, crime incidents are sparse, particularly in small regions and within specific time periods. Traditional spatial-temporal deep learning models often struggle with this sparsity, as they typically cannot effectively handle the non-Gaussian nature of crime data, which is characterized by numerous zeros and over-dispersed patterns. To address these challenges, we introduce a novel approach termed Spatial Temporal Multivariate Zero-Inflated Negative Binomial Graph Neural Networks (STMGNN-ZINB). This framework leverages diffusion and convolution networks to analyze spatial, temporal, and multivariate correlations, enabling the parameterization of probabilistic distributions of crime incidents. By incorporating a Zero-Inflated Negative Binomial model, STMGNN-ZINB effectively manages the sparse nature of crime data, enhancing prediction accuracy and the precision of confidence intervals. Our evaluation on real-world datasets confirms that STMGNN-ZINB outperforms existing models, providing a more reliable tool for predicting and understanding crime dynamics.

Historical patterns of rice farming explain modern-day language use in China and Japan more than modernization and urbanizationSharath Chandra Guntuku, Thomas Talhelm, Garrick Sherman et al.
We used natural language processing to analyze a billion words to study cultural differences on Weibo, one of China's largest social media platforms. We compared predictions from two common explanations about cultural differences in China (economic development and urban-rural differences) against the less-obvious legacy of rice versus wheat farming. Rice farmers had to coordinate shared irrigation networks and exchange labor to cope with higher labor requirements. In contrast, wheat relied on rainfall and required half as much labor. We test whether this legacy made southern China more interdependent. Across all word categories, rice explained twice as much variance as economic development and urbanization. Rice areas used more words reflecting tight social ties, holistic thought, and a cautious, prevention orientation. We then used Twitter data comparing prefectures in Japan, which largely replicated the results from China. This provides crucial evidence of the rice theory in a different nation, language, and platform.

A Concise Agent is Less Expert: Revealing Side Effects of Using Style Features on Conversational AgentsYoung-Min Cho, Yuan Yuan, Sharath Chandra Guntuku et al.
Style features such as friendly, helpful, or concise are widely used in prompts to steer the behavior of Large Language Model (LLM) conversational agents, yet their unintended side effects remain poorly understood. In this work, we present the first systematic study of cross-feature stylistic side effects. We conduct a comprehensive survey of 127 conversational agent papers from ACL Anthology and identify 12 frequently used style features. Using controlled, synthetic dialogues across task-oriented and open domain settings, we quantify how prompting for one style feature causally affects others via a pairwise LLM as a Judge evaluation framework. Our results reveal consistent and structured side effects, such as prompting for conciseness significantly reduces perceived expertise. They demonstrate that style features are deeply entangled rather than orthogonal. To support future research, we introduce CASSE (Conversational Agent Stylistic Side Effects), a dataset capturing these complex interactions. We further evaluate prompt based and activation steering based mitigation strategies and find that while they can partially restore suppressed traits, they often degrade the primary intended style. These findings challenge the assumption of faithful style control in LLMs and highlight the need for multi-objective and more principled approaches to safe, targeted stylistic steering in conversational agents.

Narrative Sharpens Gender Gaps: Surveying Film Characters with LLM AgentsVivienne Bihe Chi, Reyhan Jamalova, Lyle Ungar et al.
Mainstream film is one of the richest sources of cultural content that AI systems learn from. Yet we have few tools for measuring the gender values it encodes. We present a proof-of-concept framework that turns fictional film characters into surveyable LLM agents. Using 160 U.S. films (1990--2019), we build 734 character agents from script dialogue and scene descriptions, condense their personas via expert-style reflections, and simulate World Values Survey gender-attitude responses. Agents reproduce systematic gender differences without explicit demographic prompting, suggesting attitudes emerge from behavior rather than identity labels. Benchmarked against historical survey data, agents exaggerate gender gaps and show greater decade-to-decade volatility than real populations. Narrative sharpens rather than homogenizes gender contrasts, complicating the consistent-input assumption underlying cultivation theory's mainstreaming mechanism. AI systems trained on such corpora may inherit this stylization before any model-level amplification occurs.

When Support Escalates Distress: Regulation and Escalation in LLM Responses to Venting and Advice-SeekingVivienne Bihe Chi, Adithya V Ganesan, Ryan L Boyd et al.
Large language models are increasingly used for mental health support, yet little is known about whether their responses are psychologically safe across different help-seeking styles. We examine a foundational distinction in emotional disclosure, venting vs. advice-seeking, and whether LLMs respond in ways that regulate or amplify distress. Using 178,800 Reddit posts, we first show the two help-seeking styles are linguistically distinguishable at scale. We then introduce a measurement framework grounded in interpersonal emotion regulation theory that captures Regulation and Escalation as empirically independent dimensions. Across persona conditions (default, friend, therapist), GPT-5.3 responses systematically mirror help-seeking style: venting elicits more regulation, but also more escalation. Therapist personas reduce escalation while maintaining regulation, whereas friend personas increase both. A crowdsourced human study finds no user experience penalty for the safer therapist condition, but reveals that lay raters cannot reliably detect escalation without expert knowledge. Responses that feel supportive may simultaneously intensify distress in ways standard safety evaluation cannot see, and empathy metrics alone cannot replace a framework that measures both.

Demographic probing is widely used to study how large language models (LLMs) adapt their behavior to signaled demographic attributes. This approach typically uses a single demographic cue in isolation (e.g., a name or dialect) as a signal for group membership, implicitly assuming strong construct validity: that such cues are interchangeable operationalizations of the same underlying, demographically conditioned behavior. We test this assumption in realistic advice-seeking interactions, focusing on race and gender in a U.S. context. We find that cues intended to represent the same demographic group induce only partially overlapping changes in model behavior, while differentiation between groups within a given cue is weak and uneven. Consequently, estimated disparities are unstable, with both magnitude and direction varying across cues. We further show that these inconsistencies partly arise from variation in how strongly cues encode demographic attributes and from linguistic confounders that independently shape model behavior. Together, our findings suggest that demographic probing lacks construct validity: it does not yield a single, stable characterization of how LLMs condition on demographic information, which may reflect a misspecified or fragmented construct. We conclude by recommending the use of multiple, ecologically valid cues and explicit control of confounders to support more defensible claims about demographic effects in LLMs.

A Weakly-Supervised Iterative Graph-Based Approach to Retrieve COVID-19 Misinformation TopicsHarry Wang, Sharath Chandra Guntuku
The COVID-19 pandemic has been accompanied by an `infodemic' -- of accurate and inaccurate health information across social media. Detecting misinformation amidst dynamically changing information landscape is challenging; identifying relevant keywords and posts is arduous due to the large amount of human effort required to inspect the content and sources of posts. We aim to reduce the resource cost of this process by introducing a weakly-supervised iterative graph-based approach to detect keywords, topics, and themes related to misinformation, with a focus on COVID-19. Our approach can successfully detect specific topics from general misinformation-related seed words in a few seed texts. Our approach utilizes the BERT-based Word Graph Search (BWGS) algorithm that builds on context-based neural network embeddings for retrieving misinformation-related posts. We utilize Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topic modeling for obtaining misinformation-related themes from the texts returned by BWGS. Furthermore, we propose the BERT-based Multi-directional Word Graph Search (BMDWGS) algorithm that utilizes greater starting context information for misinformation extraction. In addition to a qualitative analysis of our approach, our quantitative analyses show that BWGS and BMDWGS are effective in extracting misinformation-related content compared to common baselines in low data resource settings. Extracting such content is useful for uncovering prevalent misconceptions and concerns and for facilitating precision public health messaging campaigns to improve health behaviors.

Optimized but Unowned: How AI-Authored Goals Undermine the Motivation They Are Meant to DriveVivienne Bihe Chi, Roman Rietsche, Andreas Göldi et al.
As AI tools become embedded in productivity and self-improvement contexts, a pressing question emerges: what happens when AI does the goal-setting for us? While large language models can generate goals that are objectively well-formed, the motivational consequences of delegating this cognitively and emotionally significant task remain unknown. In a preregistered experiment (N = 470), we compared self-authored goals against LLM-authored goals derived from a personal reflection. Although LLM-generated goals scored higher on SMART criteria (specificity, measurability, achievability, relevance, and time-boundedness; d = 2.26), participants in the LLM condition reported lower psychological ownership (d = 1.38), commitment (d = 1.19), and perceived importance (d = 1.13). At two-week follow-up, 72.8% of self-authored participants had acted on two or more of their goals, compared to 46.6% in the LLM condition. Mediation analyses identified psychological ownership as the mechanism: it mediated the authorship effect on every downstream motivational and behavioral outcome, while objective goal quality did not. Critically, individuals low in trait self-efficacy, those most likely to seek AI assistance, experienced the steepest ownership erosion. These findings reveal a quality-motivation dissociation in AI-assisted goal-setting and identify authorship preservation as a design priority for AI tools deployed in identity-relevant, behavior-dependent tasks.

Detecting COVID-19 and Community Acquired Pneumonia using Chest CT scan images with Deep LearningShubham Chaudhary, Sadbhawna, Vinit Jakhetiya et al.
We propose a two-stage Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) based classification framework for detecting COVID-19 and Community-Acquired Pneumonia (CAP) using the chest Computed Tomography (CT) scan images. In the first stage, an infection - COVID-19 or CAP, is detected using a pre-trained DenseNet architecture. Then, in the second stage, a fine-grained three-way classification is done using EfficientNet architecture. The proposed COVID+CAP-CNN framework achieved a slice-level classification accuracy of over 94% at identifying COVID-19 and CAP. Further, the proposed framework has the potential to be an initial screening tool for differential diagnosis of COVID-19 and CAP, achieving a validation accuracy of over 89.3% at the finer three-way COVID-19, CAP, and healthy classification. Within the IEEE ICASSP 2021 Signal Processing Grand Challenge (SPGC) on COVID-19 Diagnosis, our proposed two-stage classification framework achieved an overall accuracy of 90% and sensitivity of .857, .9, and .942 at distinguishing COVID-19, CAP, and normal individuals respectively, to rank first in the evaluation. Conceptors for Semantic SteeringIlias Triantafyllopoulos, Young-Min Cho, Ren Tao et al.
Activation-based steering provides control of LLM behavior at inference time, but the dominant paradigm reduces each concept to a single direction whose geometry is left largely unexamined. Rather than selecting a single steering direction, we use conceptors: soft projection matrices estimated from activations pooled across both poles of a bipolar concept, which preserve the concept's full multidimensional subspace. A geometric analysis shows the bipolar subspace strictly subsumes the single-vector baseline. We further show that the conceptor quota provides a parameter-free layer-selection diagnostic, predicting concept separability with Pearson correlations up to r=0.96 across three instruction-tuned models and three semantic dimensions. Beyond selection, conceptors admit a closed-form Boolean algebra (AND, OR, NOT): we evaluate conceptor compositionality on thematically related sub-concepts. Across a systematic five-axis design-space evaluation, conceptors match or outperform additive baselines at layers where concept subspaces are multi-dimensional while producing substantially fewer degenerate outputs. Conceptor steering is a geometrically principled, compositional, and practically safer alternative to single-direction steering from a limited number of contrastive pairs.

Herd Behavior: Investigating Peer Influence in LLM-based Multi-Agent SystemsYoung-Min Cho, Sharath Chandra Guntuku, Lyle Ungar
Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have enabled the emergence of multi-agent systems where LLMs interact, collaborate, and make decisions in shared environments. While individual model behavior has been extensively studied, the dynamics of peer influence in such systems remain underexplored. In this paper, we investigate herd behavior, the tendency of agents to align their outputs with those of their peers, within LLM-based multi-agent interactions. We present a series of controlled experiments that reveal how herd behaviors are shaped by multiple factors. First, we show that the gap between self-confidence and perceived confidence in peers significantly impacts an agent's likelihood to conform. Second, we find that the format in which peer information is presented plays a critical role in modulating the strength of herd behavior. Finally, we demonstrate that the degree of herd behavior can be systematically controlled, and that appropriately calibrated herd tendencies can enhance collaborative outcomes. These findings offer new insights into the social dynamics of LLM-based systems and open pathways for designing more effective and adaptive multi-agent collaboration frameworks.

Language-based Valence and Arousal Expressions between the United States and China: a Cross-Cultural ExaminationYoung-Min Cho, Dandan Pang, Stuti Thapa et al.
While affective expressions on social media have been extensively studied, most research has focused on the Western context. This paper explores cultural differences in affective expressions by comparing valence and arousal on Twitter/X (geolocated to the US) and Sina Weibo (in Mainland China). Using the NRC-VAD lexicon to measure valence and arousal, we identify distinct patterns of emotional expression across both platforms. Our analysis reveals a functional representation between valence and arousal, showing a negative offset in contrast to traditional lab-based findings which suggest a positive offset. Furthermore, we uncover significant cross-cultural differences in arousal, with US users displaying higher emotional intensity than Chinese users, regardless of the valence of the content. Finally, we conduct a comprehensive language analysis correlating n-grams and LDA topics with affective dimensions to deepen our understanding of how language and culture shape emotional expression. These findings contribute to a more nuanced understanding of affective communication across cultural and linguistic contexts on social media.

Beyond the Strongest LLM: Multi-Turn Multi-Agent Orchestration vs. Single LLMs on BenchmarksAaron Xuxiang Tian, Ruofan Zhang, Jiayao Tang et al.
We study multi-turn multi-agent orchestration, where multiple large language model (LLM) agents interact over multiple turns by iteratively proposing answers or casting votes until reaching consensus. Using four LLMs (Gemini 2.5 Pro, GPT-5, Grok 4, and Claude Sonnet 4) on GPQA-Diamond, IFEval, and MuSR, we conduct two experiments: (i) benchmarking orchestration against single-LLM baselines; and (ii) ablations on GPQA-Diamond that vary whether agents see who authored answers and whether they can observe ongoing votes. Orchestration matches or exceeds the strongest single model and consistently outperforms the others. Analysis of best-achievable orchestration performance shows potential for further gains. The ablations show that revealing authorship increases self-voting and ties, and that showing ongoing votes amplifies herding, which speeds convergence but can sometimes yield premature consensus.

Real-Time Deadlines Reveal Temporal Awareness Failures in LLM Strategic DialoguesNeil K. R. Sehgal, Sharath Chandra Guntuku, Lyle Ungar
Large Language Models (LLMs) generate text token-by-token in discrete time, yet real-world communication, from therapy sessions to business negotiations, critically depends on continuous time constraints. Current LLM architectures and evaluation protocols rarely test for temporal awareness under real-time deadlines. We use simulated negotiations between paired agents under strict deadlines to investigate how LLMs adjust their behavior in time-sensitive settings. In a control condition, agents know only the global time limit. In a time-aware condition, they receive remaining-time updates at each turn. Deal closure rates are substantially higher (32\% vs. 4\% for GPT-5.1) and offer acceptances are sixfold higher in the time-aware condition than in the control, suggesting LLMs struggle to internally track elapsed time. However, the same LLMs achieve near-perfect deal closure rates ($\geq$95\%) under turn-based limits, revealing the failure is in temporal tracking rather than strategic reasoning. These effects replicate across negotiation scenarios and models, illustrating a systematic lack of LLM time awareness that will constrain LLM deployment in many time-sensitive applications.

Self-Reported Side Effects of Semaglutide and Tirzepatide in Online CommunitiesNeil K. R. Sehgal, Jena Shaw Tronieri, Lyle Ungar et al.
Social media can reveal patient experiences with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1 RAs) that extend beyond clinical trial data. We analyzed 410,198 Reddit posts (May 2019-June 2025) mentioning semaglutide or tirzepatide. A total of 67,008 users self-reported using these medications, and 43.5% described at least one side effect. Gastrointestinal symptoms predominated, including nausea (36.9%), fatigue (16.7%), vomiting (16.3%), constipation (15.3%), and diarrhea (12.6%). Notably, reproductive symptoms (e.g., menstrual irregularities) and temperature-related complaints (e.g., chills, hot flashes) emerged as unrecognized potential effects. These findings highlight patient concerns not well captured in current labeling or trials. Large-scale social media analysis can complement traditional pharmacovigilance by detecting emerging safety signals and expanding understanding of the real-world safety profile of GLP-1 RAs.

Cultural variation exists between nations (e.g., the United States vs. China), but also within regions (e.g., California vs. Texas, Los Angeles vs. San Francisco). Measuring this regional cultural variation can illuminate how and why people think and behave differently. Historically, it has been difficult to computationally model cultural variation due to a lack of training data and scalability constraints. In this work, we introduce a new research problem for the NLP community: How do we measure variation in cultural constructs across regions using language? We then provide a scalable solution: building knowledge-guided lexica to model cultural variation, encouraging future work at the intersection of NLP and cultural understanding. We also highlight modern LLMs' failure to measure cultural variation or generate culturally varied language.

Generative Adversarial Networks based Skin Lesion SegmentationShubham Innani, Prasad Dutande, Ujjwal Baid et al.
Skin cancer is a serious condition that requires accurate diagnosis and treatment. One way to assist clinicians in this task is using computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) tools that automatically segment skin lesions from dermoscopic images. We propose a novel adversarial learning-based framework called Efficient-GAN (EGAN) that uses an unsupervised generative network to generate accurate lesion masks. It consists of a generator module with a top-down squeeze excitation-based compound scaled path, an asymmetric lateral connection-based bottom-up path, and a discriminator module that distinguishes between original and synthetic masks. A morphology-based smoothing loss is also implemented to encourage the network to create smooth semantic boundaries of lesions. The framework is evaluated on the International Skin Imaging Collaboration (ISIC) Lesion Dataset 2018. It outperforms the current state-of-the-art skin lesion segmentation approaches with a Dice coefficient, Jaccard similarity, and Accuracy of 90.1%, 83.6%, and 94.5%, respectively. We also design a lightweight segmentation framework (MGAN) that achieves comparable performance as EGAN but with an order of magnitude lower number of training parameters, thus resulting in faster inference times for low compute resource settings.

Different Affordances on Facebook and SMS Text Messaging Do Not Impede Generalization of Language-Based Predictive ModelsTingting Liu, Salvatore Giorgi, Xiangyu Tao et al.
Adaptive mobile device-based health interventions often use machine learning models trained on non-mobile device data, such as social media text, due to the difficulty and high expense of collecting large text message (SMS) data. Therefore, understanding the differences and generalization of models between these platforms is crucial for proper deployment. We examined the psycho-linguistic differences between Facebook and text messages, and their impact on out-of-domain model performance, using a sample of 120 users who shared both. We found that users use Facebook for sharing experiences (e.g., leisure) and SMS for task-oriented and conversational purposes (e.g., plan confirmations), reflecting the differences in the affordances. To examine the downstream effects of these differences, we used pre-trained Facebook-based language models to estimate age, gender, depression, life satisfaction, and stress on both Facebook and SMS. We found no significant differences in correlations between the estimates and self-reports across 6 of 8 models. These results suggest using pre-trained Facebook language models to achieve better accuracy with just-in-time interventions.

Modeling differential stress expressions in urban and rural regions in China can provide a better understanding of the effects of urbanization on psychological well-being in a country that has rapidly grown economically in the last two decades. This paper studies linguistic differences in the experiences and expressions of stress in urban-rural China from Weibo posts from over 65,000 users across 329 counties using hierarchical mixed-effects models. We analyzed phrases, topical themes, and psycho-linguistic word choices in Weibo posts mentioning stress to better understand appraisal differences surrounding psychological stress in urban and rural communities in China; we then compared them with large-scale polls from Gallup. After controlling for socioeconomic and gender differences, we found that rural communities tend to express stress in emotional and personal themes such as relationships, health, and opportunity while users in urban areas express stress using relative, temporal, and external themes such as work, politics, and economics. These differences exist beyond controlling for GDP and urbanization, indicating a fundamentally different lifestyle between rural and urban residents in very specific environments, arguably having different sources of stress. We found corroborative trends in physical, financial, and social wellness with urbanization in Gallup polls.

Twitter Corpus of the #BlackLivesMatter Movement And Counter Protests: 2013 to 2021Salvatore Giorgi, Sharath Chandra Guntuku, McKenzie Himelein-Wachowiak et al.
Black Lives Matter (BLM) is a decentralized social movement protesting violence against Black individuals and communities, with a focus on police brutality. The movement gained significant attention following the killings of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd in 2020. The #BlackLivesMatter social media hashtag has come to represent the grassroots movement, with similar hashtags counter protesting the BLM movement, such as #AllLivesMatter, and #BlueLivesMatter. We introduce a data set of 63.9 million tweets from 13.0 million users from over 100 countries which contain one of the following keywords: BlackLivesMatter, AllLivesMatter, and BlueLivesMatter. This data set contains all currently available tweets from the beginning of the BLM movement in 2013 to 2021. We summarize the data set and show temporal trends in use of both the BlackLivesMatter keyword and keywords associated with counter movements. Additionally, for each keyword, we create and release a set of Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) topics (i.e., automatically clustered groups of semantically co-occuring words) to aid researchers in identifying linguistic patterns across the three keywords.

Studying Cultural Differences in Emoji Usage across the East and the WestSharath Chandra Guntuku, Mingyang Li, Louis Tay et al.
Global acceptance of Emojis suggests a cross-cultural, normative use of Emojis. Meanwhile, nuances in Emoji use across cultures may also exist due to linguistic differences in expressing emotions and diversity in conceptualizing topics. Indeed, literature in cross-cultural psychology has found both normative and culture-specific ways in which emotions are expressed. In this paper, using social media, we compare the Emoji usage based on frequency, context, and topic associations across countries in the East (China and Japan) and the West (United States, United Kingdom, and Canada). Across the East and the West, our study examines a) similarities and differences on the usage of different categories of Emojis such as People, Food \& Drink, Travel \& Places etc., b) potential mapping of Emoji use differences with previously identified cultural differences in users' expression about diverse concepts such as death, money emotions and family, and c) relative correspondence of validated psycho-linguistic categories with Ekman's emotions. The analysis of Emoji use in the East and the West reveals recognizable normative and culture specific patterns. This research reveals the ways in which Emojis can be used for cross-cultural communication.

What Twitter Profile and Posted Images Reveal About Depression and AnxietySharath Chandra Guntuku, Daniel Preotiuc-Pietro, Johannes C. Eichstaedt et al.
Previous work has found strong links between the choice of social media images and users' emotions, demographics and personality traits. In this study, we examine which attributes of profile and posted images are associated with depression and anxiety of Twitter users. We used a sample of 28,749 Facebook users to build a language prediction model of survey-reported depression and anxiety, and validated it on Twitter on a sample of 887 users who had taken anxiety and depression surveys. We then applied it to a different set of 4,132 Twitter users to impute language-based depression and anxiety labels, and extracted interpretable features of posted and profile pictures to uncover the associations with users' depression and anxiety, controlling for demographics. For depression, we find that profile pictures suppress positive emotions rather than display more negative emotions, likely because of social media self-presentation biases. They also tend to show the single face of the user (rather than show her in groups of friends), marking increased focus on the self, emblematic for depression. Posted images are dominated by grayscale and low aesthetic cohesion across a variety of image features. Profile images of anxious users are similarly marked by grayscale and low aesthetic cohesion, but less so than those of depressed users. Finally, we show that image features can be used to predict depression and anxiety, and that multitask learning that includes a joint modeling of demographics improves prediction performance. Overall, we find that the image attributes that mark depression and anxiety offer a rich lens into these conditions largely congruent with the psychological literature, and that images on Twitter allow inferences about the mental health status of users.

Understanding and Measuring Psychological Stress using Social MediaSharath Chandra Guntuku, Anneke Buffone, Kokil Jaidka et al.
A body of literature has demonstrated that users' mental health conditions, such as depression and anxiety, can be predicted from their social media language. There is still a gap in the scientific understanding of how psychological stress is expressed on social media. Stress is one of the primary underlying causes and correlates of chronic physical illnesses and mental health conditions. In this paper, we explore the language of psychological stress with a dataset of 601 social media users, who answered the Perceived Stress Scale questionnaire and also consented to share their Facebook and Twitter data. Firstly, we find that stressed users post about exhaustion, losing control, increased self-focus and physical pain as compared to posts about breakfast, family-time, and travel by users who are not stressed. Secondly, we find that Facebook language is more predictive of stress than Twitter language. Thirdly, we demonstrate how the language based models thus developed can be adapted and be scaled to measure county-level trends. Since county-level language is easily available on Twitter using the Streaming API, we explore multiple domain adaptation algorithms to adapt user-level Facebook models to Twitter language. We find that domain-adapted and scaled social media-based measurements of stress outperform sociodemographic variables (age, gender, race, education, and income), against ground-truth survey-based stress measurements, both at the user- and the county-level in the U.S. Twitter language that scores higher in stress is also predictive of poorer health, less access to facilities and lower socioeconomic status in counties. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of using social media as a new tool for monitoring stress levels of both individuals and counties.

Personality, Culture, and System Factors - Impact on Affective Response to MultimediaSharath Chandra Guntuku, Michael James Scott, Gheorghita Ghinea et al.
Whilst affective responses to various forms and genres of multimedia content have been well researched, precious few studies have investigated the combined impact that multimedia system parameters and human factors have on affect. Consequently, in this paper we explore the role that two primordial dimensions of human factors - personality and culture - in conjunction with system factors - frame rate, resolution, and bit rate - have on user affect and enjoyment of multimedia presentations. To this end, a two-site, cross-cultural study was undertaken, the results of which produced three predictve models. Personality and Culture traits were shown statistically to represent 5.6% of the variance in positive affect, 13.6% in negative affect and 9.3% in enjoyment. The correlation between affect and enjoyment, was significant. Predictive modeling incorporating human factors showed about 8%, 7% and 9% improvement in predicting positive affect, negative affect and enjoyment respectively when compared to models trained only on system factors. Results and analysis indicate the significant role played by human factors in influencing affect that users experience while watching multimedia.

Real-time Peer-to-Peer Botnet Detection Framework based on Bayesian Regularized Neural NetworkSharath Chandra Guntuku, Pratik Narang, Chittaranjan Hota
Over the past decade, the Cyberspace has seen an increasing number of attacks coming from botnets using the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) architecture. Peer-to-Peer botnets use a decentralized Command & Control architecture. Moreover, a large number of such botnets already exist, and newer versions- which significantly differ from their parent bot- are also discovered practically every year. In this work, the authors propose and implement a novel hybrid framework for detecting P2P botnets in live network traffic by integrating Neural Networks with Bayesian Regularization. Bayesian Regularization helps in achieving better generalization of the dataset, thereby enabling the detection of botnet activity even of those bots which were never used in training the Neural Network. Hence such a framework is suitable for detection of newer and unseen botnets in live traffic of a network. This was verified by testing the Framework on test data unseen to the Detection module (using untrained botnet dataset), and the authors were successful in detecting this activity with an accuracy of 99.2 %.
