MoExtend: Tuning New Experts for Modality and Task Extension

Large language models (LLMs) excel in various tasks but are primarily trained on text data, limiting their application scope. Expanding LLM capabilities to include vision-language understanding is vital, yet training them on multimodal data from scratch is challenging and costly. Existing instruction tuning methods, e.g., LLAVA, often connects a pretrained CLIP vision encoder and LLMs via fully fine-tuning LLMs to bridge the modality gap. However, full fine-tuning is plagued by catastrophic forgetting, i.e., forgetting previous knowledge, and high training costs particularly in the era of increasing tasks and modalities. To solve this issue, we introduce MoExtend, an effective framework designed to streamline the modality adaptation and extension of Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models. MoExtend seamlessly integrates new experts into pre-trained MoE models, endowing them with novel knowledge without the need to tune pretrained models such as MoE and vision encoders. This approach enables rapid adaptation and extension to new modal data or tasks, effectively addressing the challenge of accommodating new modalities within LLMs. Furthermore, MoExtend avoids tuning pretrained models, thus mitigating the risk of catastrophic forgetting. Experimental results demonstrate the efficacy and efficiency of MoExtend in enhancing the multimodal capabilities of LLMs, contributing to advancements in multimodal AI research. ScaleLong: Towards More Stable Training of Diffusion Model via Scaling Network Long Skip Connection

In diffusion models, UNet is the most popular network backbone, since its long skip connects (LSCs) to connect distant network blocks can aggregate long-distant information and alleviate vanishing gradient. Unfortunately, UNet often suffers from unstable training in diffusion models which can be alleviated by scaling its LSC coefficients smaller. However, theoretical understandings of the instability of UNet in diffusion models and also the performance improvement of LSC scaling remain absent yet. To solve this issue, we theoretically show that the coefficients of LSCs in UNet have big effects on the stableness of the forward and backward propagation and robustness of UNet. Specifically, the hidden feature and gradient of UNet at any layer can oscillate and their oscillation ranges are actually large which explains the instability of UNet training. Moreover, UNet is also provably sensitive to perturbed input, and predicts an output distant from the desired output, yielding oscillatory loss and thus oscillatory gradient. Besides, we also observe the theoretical benefits of the LSC coefficient scaling of UNet in the stableness of hidden features and gradient and also robustness. Finally, inspired by our theory, we propose an effective coefficient scaling framework ScaleLong that scales the coefficients of LSC in UNet and better improves the training stability of UNet. Experimental results on four famous datasets show that our methods are superior to stabilize training and yield about 1.5x training acceleration on different diffusion models with UNet or UViT backbones. Neural Chain-of-Thought Search: Searching the Optimal Reasoning Path to Enhance Large Language Models

Chain-of-Thought reasoning has significantly enhanced the problem-solving capabilities of Large Language Models. Unfortunately, current models generate reasoning steps sequentially without foresight, often becoming trapped in suboptimal reasoning paths with redundant steps. In contrast, we introduce Neural Chain-of-Thought Search (NCoTS), a framework that reformulates reasoning as a dynamic search for the optimal thinking strategy. By quantitatively characterizing the solution space, we reveal the existence of sparse superior reasoning paths that are simultaneously more accurate and concise than standard outputs. Our method actively navigates towards these paths by evaluating candidate reasoning operators using a dual-factor heuristic that optimizes for both correctness and computational cost. Consequently, NCoTS achieves a Pareto improvement across diverse reasoning benchmarks, boosting accuracy by over 3.5% while reducing generation length by over 22%. The Lottery Ticket Hypothesis for Self-attention in Convolutional Neural Network

Recently many plug-and-play self-attention modules (SAMs) are proposed to enhance the model generalization by exploiting the internal information of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In general, previous works ignore where to plug in the SAMs since they connect the SAMs individually with each block of the entire CNN backbone for granted, leading to incremental computational cost and the number of parameters with the growth of network depth. However, we empirically find and verify some counterintuitive phenomena that: (a) Connecting the SAMs to all the blocks may not always bring the largest performance boost, and connecting to partial blocks would be even better; (b) Adding the SAMs to a CNN may not always bring a performance boost, and instead it may even harm the performance of the original CNN backbone. Therefore, we articulate and demonstrate the Lottery Ticket Hypothesis for Self-attention Networks: a full self-attention network contains a subnetwork with sparse self-attention connections that can (1) accelerate inference, (2) reduce extra parameter increment, and (3) maintain accuracy. In addition to the empirical evidence, this hypothesis is also supported by our theoretical evidence. Furthermore, we propose a simple yet effective reinforcement-learning-based method to search the ticket, i.e., the connection scheme that satisfies the three above-mentioned conditions. Extensive experiments on widely-used benchmark datasets and popular self-attention networks show the effectiveness of our method. Besides, our experiments illustrate that our searched ticket has the capacity of transferring to some vision tasks, e.g., crowd counting and segmentation.

Understanding Self-attention Mechanism via Dynamical System Perspective

The self-attention mechanism (SAM) is widely used in various fields of artificial intelligence and has successfully boosted the performance of different models. However, current explanations of this mechanism are mainly based on intuitions and experiences, while there still lacks direct modeling for how the SAM helps performance. To mitigate this issue, in this paper, based on the dynamical system perspective of the residual neural network, we first show that the intrinsic stiffness phenomenon (SP) in the high-precision solution of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) also widely exists in high-performance neural networks (NN). Thus the ability of NN to measure SP at the feature level is necessary to obtain high performance and is an important factor in the difficulty of training NN. Similar to the adaptive step-size method which is effective in solving stiff ODEs, we show that the SAM is also a stiffness-aware step size adaptor that can enhance the model's representational ability to measure intrinsic SP by refining the estimation of stiffness information and generating adaptive attention values, which provides a new understanding about why and how the SAM can benefit the model performance. This novel perspective can also explain the lottery ticket hypothesis in SAM, design new quantitative metrics of representational ability, and inspire a new theoretic-inspired approach, StepNet. Extensive experiments on several popular benchmarks demonstrate that StepNet can extract fine-grained stiffness information and measure SP accurately, leading to significant improvements in various visual tasks.

A Generic Shared Attention Mechanism for Various Backbone Neural Networks

The self-attention mechanism has emerged as a critical component for improving the performance of various backbone neural networks. However, current mainstream approaches individually incorporate newly designed self-attention modules (SAMs) into each layer of the network for granted without fully exploiting their parameters' potential. This leads to suboptimal performance and increased parameter consumption as the network depth increases. To improve this paradigm, in this paper, we first present a counterintuitive but inherent phenomenon: SAMs tend to produce strongly correlated attention maps across different layers, with an average Pearson correlation coefficient of up to 0.85. Inspired by this inherent observation, we propose Dense-and-Implicit Attention (DIA), which directly shares SAMs across layers and employs a long short-term memory module to calibrate and bridge the highly correlated attention maps of different layers, thus improving the parameter utilization efficiency of SAMs. This design of DIA is also consistent with the neural network's dynamical system perspective. Through extensive experiments, we demonstrate that our simple yet effective DIA can consistently enhance various network backbones, including ResNet, Transformer, and UNet, across tasks such as image classification, object detection, and image generation using diffusion models.

ASR: Attention-alike Structural Re-parameterization

The structural re-parameterization (SRP) technique is a novel deep learning technique that achieves interconversion between different network architectures through equivalent parameter transformations. This technique enables the mitigation of the extra costs for performance improvement during training, such as parameter size and inference time, through these transformations during inference, and therefore SRP has great potential for industrial and practical applications. The existing SRP methods have successfully considered many commonly used architectures, such as normalizations, pooling methods, and multi-branch convolution. However, the widely used attention modules which drastically slow inference speed cannot be directly implemented by SRP due to these modules usually act on the backbone network in a multiplicative manner and the modules' output is input-dependent during inference, which limits the application scenarios of SRP. In this paper, we conduct extensive experiments from a statistical perspective and discover an interesting phenomenon Stripe Observation, which reveals that channel attention values quickly approach some constant vectors during training. This observation inspires us to propose a simple-yet-effective attention-alike structural re-parameterization (ASR) that allows us to achieve SRP for a given network while enjoying the effectiveness of the attention mechanism. Extensive experiments conducted on several standard benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of ASR in generally improving the performance of existing backbone networks, attention modules, and SRP methods without any elaborated model crafting. We also analyze the limitations and provide experimental and theoretical evidence for the strong robustness of the proposed ASR.

On Fast Simulation of Dynamical System with Neural Vector Enhanced Numerical Solver

The large-scale simulation of dynamical systems is critical in numerous scientific and engineering disciplines. However, traditional numerical solvers are limited by the choice of step sizes when estimating integration, resulting in a trade-off between accuracy and computational efficiency. To address this challenge, we introduce a deep learning-based corrector called Neural Vector (NeurVec), which can compensate for integration errors and enable larger time step sizes in simulations. Our extensive experiments on a variety of complex dynamical system benchmarks demonstrate that NeurVec exhibits remarkable generalization capability on a continuous phase space, even when trained using limited and discrete data. NeurVec significantly accelerates traditional solvers, achieving speeds tens to hundreds of times faster while maintaining high levels of accuracy and stability. Moreover, NeurVec's simple-yet-effective design, combined with its ease of implementation, has the potential to establish a new paradigm for fast-solving differential equations based on deep learning.

AttNS: Attention-Inspired Numerical Solving For Limited Data Scenarios

We propose the attention-inspired numerical solver (AttNS), a concise method that helps the generalization and robustness issues faced by the AI-Hybrid numerical solver in solving differential equations due to limited data. AttNS is inspired by the effectiveness of attention modules in Residual Neural Networks (ResNet) in enhancing model generalization and robustness for conventional deep learning tasks. Drawing from the dynamical system perspective of ResNet, we seamlessly incorporate attention mechanisms into the design of numerical methods tailored for the characteristics of solving differential equations. Our results on benchmarks, ranging from high-dimensional problems to chaotic systems, showcases AttNS consistently enhancing various numerical solvers without any intricate model crafting. Finally, we analyze AttNS experimentally and theoretically, demonstrating its ability to achieve strong generalization and robustness while ensuring the convergence of the solver. This includes requiring less data compared to other advanced methods to achieve comparable generalization errors and better prevention of numerical explosion issues when solving differential equations.

Mirror Gradient: Towards Robust Multimodal Recommender Systems via Exploring Flat Local Minima

Multimodal recommender systems utilize various types of information to model user preferences and item features, helping users discover items aligned with their interests. The integration of multimodal information mitigates the inherent challenges in recommender systems, e.g., the data sparsity problem and cold-start issues. However, it simultaneously magnifies certain risks from multimodal information inputs, such as information adjustment risk and inherent noise risk. These risks pose crucial challenges to the robustness of recommendation models. In this paper, we analyze multimodal recommender systems from the novel perspective of flat local minima and propose a concise yet effective gradient strategy called Mirror Gradient (MG). This strategy can implicitly enhance the model's robustness during the optimization process, mitigating instability risks arising from multimodal information inputs. We also provide strong theoretical evidence and conduct extensive empirical experiments to show the superiority of MG across various multimodal recommendation models and benchmarks. Furthermore, we find that the proposed MG can complement existing robust training methods and be easily extended to diverse advanced recommendation models, making it a promising new and fundamental paradigm for training multimodal recommender systems. RouterEval: A Comprehensive Benchmark for Routing LLMs to Explore Model-level Scaling Up in LLMs

Routing large language models (LLMs) is a new paradigm that uses a router to recommend the best LLM from a pool of candidates for a given input. In this paper, our comprehensive analysis with more than 8,500 LLMs reveals a novel model-level scaling up phenomenon in Routing LLMs, i.e., a capable router can significantly enhance the performance of this paradigm as the number of candidates increases. This improvement can even surpass the performance of the best single model in the pool and many existing strong LLMs, confirming it a highly promising paradigm. However, the lack of comprehensive and open-source benchmarks for Routing LLMs has hindered the development of routers. In this paper, we introduce RouterEval, a benchmark tailored for router research, which includes over 200,000,000 performance records for 12 popular LLM evaluations across various areas such as commonsense reasoning, semantic understanding, etc., based on over 8,500 various LLMs. Using RouterEval, extensive evaluations of existing Routing LLM methods reveal that most still have significant room for improvement. Deepening Neural Networks Implicitly and Locally via Recurrent Attention Strategy

More and more empirical and theoretical evidence shows that deepening neural networks can effectively improve their performance under suitable training settings. However, deepening the backbone of neural networks will inevitably and significantly increase computation and parameter size. To mitigate these problems, we propose a simple-yet-effective Recurrent Attention Strategy (RAS), which implicitly increases the depth of neural networks with lightweight attention modules by local parameter sharing. The extensive experiments on three widely-used benchmark datasets demonstrate that RAS can improve the performance of neural networks at a slight addition of parameter size and computation, performing favorably against other existing well-known attention modules.

Causal Inference for Chatting Handoff

Aiming to ensure chatbot quality by predicting chatbot failure and enabling human-agent collaboration, Machine-Human Chatting Handoff (MHCH) has attracted lots of attention from both industry and academia in recent years. However, most existing methods mainly focus on the dialogue context or assist with global satisfaction prediction based on multi-task learning, which ignore the grounded relationships among the causal variables, like the user state and labor cost. These variables are significantly associated with handoff decisions, resulting in prediction bias and cost increasement. Therefore, we propose Causal-Enhance Module (CEM) by establishing the causal graph of MHCH based on these two variables, which is a simple yet effective module and can be easy to plug into the existing MHCH methods. For the impact of users, we use the user state to correct the prediction bias according to the causal relationship of multi-task. For the labor cost, we train an auxiliary cost simulator to calculate unbiased labor cost through counterfactual learning so that a model becomes cost-aware. Extensive experiments conducted on four real-world benchmarks demonstrate the effectiveness of CEM in generally improving the performance of existing MHCH methods without any elaborated model crafting.

4D-Animal: Freely Reconstructing Animatable 3D Animals from Videos

Existing methods for reconstructing animatable 3D animals from videos typically rely on sparse semantic keypoints to fit parametric models. However, obtaining such keypoints is labor-intensive, and keypoint detectors trained on limited animal data are often unreliable. To address this, we propose 4D-Animal, a novel framework that reconstructs animatable 3D animals from videos without requiring sparse keypoint annotations. Our approach introduces a dense feature network that maps 2D representations to SMAL parameters, enhancing both the efficiency and stability of the fitting process. Furthermore, we develop a hierarchical alignment strategy that integrates silhouette, part-level, pixel-level, and temporal cues from pre-trained 2D visual models to produce accurate and temporally coherent reconstructions across frames. Extensive experiments demonstrate that 4D-Animal outperforms both model-based and model-free baselines. Moreover, the high-quality 3D assets generated by our method can benefit other 3D tasks, underscoring its potential for large-scale applications. LSAS: Lightweight Sub-attention Strategy for Alleviating Attention Bias Problem

In computer vision, the performance of deep neural networks (DNNs) is highly related to the feature extraction ability, i.e., the ability to recognize and focus on key pixel regions in an image. However, in this paper, we quantitatively and statistically illustrate that DNNs have a serious attention bias problem on many samples from some popular datasets: (1) Position bias: DNNs fully focus on label-independent regions; (2) Range bias: The focused regions from DNN are not completely contained in the ideal region. Moreover, we find that the existing self-attention modules can alleviate these biases to a certain extent, but the biases are still non-negligible. To further mitigate them, we propose a lightweight sub-attention strategy (LSAS), which utilizes high-order sub-attention modules to improve the original self-attention modules. The effectiveness of LSAS is demonstrated by extensive experiments on widely-used benchmark datasets and popular attention networks. SUR-adapter: Enhancing Text-to-Image Pre-trained Diffusion Models with Large Language Models

Diffusion models, which have emerged to become popular text-to-image generation models, can produce high-quality and content-rich images guided by textual prompts. However, there are limitations to semantic understanding and commonsense reasoning in existing models when the input prompts are concise narrative, resulting in low-quality image generation. To improve the capacities for narrative prompts, we propose a simple-yet-effective parameter-efficient fine-tuning approach called the Semantic Understanding and Reasoning adapter (SUR-adapter) for pre-trained diffusion models. To reach this goal, we first collect and annotate a new dataset SURD which consists of more than 57,000 semantically corrected multi-modal samples. Each sample contains a simple narrative prompt, a complex keyword-based prompt, and a high-quality image. Then, we align the semantic representation of narrative prompts to the complex prompts and transfer knowledge of large language models (LLMs) to our SUR-adapter via knowledge distillation so that it can acquire the powerful semantic understanding and reasoning capabilities to build a high-quality textual semantic representation for text-to-image generation. We conduct experiments by integrating multiple LLMs and popular pre-trained diffusion models to show the effectiveness of our approach in enabling diffusion models to understand and reason concise natural language without image quality degradation. Our approach can make text-to-image diffusion models easier to use with better user experience, which demonstrates our approach has the potential for further advancing the development of user-friendly text-to-image generation models by bridging the semantic gap between simple narrative prompts and complex keyword-based prompts. Continuous Transition: Improving Sample Efficiency for Continuous Control Problems via MixUp

Although deep reinforcement learning (RL) has been successfully applied to a variety of robotic control tasks, it's still challenging to apply it to real-world tasks, due to the poor sample efficiency. Attempting to overcome this shortcoming, several works focus on reusing the collected trajectory data during the training by decomposing them into a set of policy-irrelevant discrete transitions. However, their improvements are somewhat marginal since i) the amount of the transitions is usually small, and ii) the value assignment only happens in the joint states. To address these issues, this paper introduces a concise yet powerful method to construct Continuous Transition, which exploits the trajectory information by exploiting the potential transitions along the trajectory. Specifically, we propose to synthesize new transitions for training by linearly interpolating the consecutive transitions. To keep the constructed transitions authentic, we also develop a discriminator to guide the construction process automatically. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our proposed method achieves a significant improvement in sample efficiency on various complex continuous robotic control problems in MuJoCo and outperforms the advanced model-based / model-free RL methods. Efficient Attention Network: Accelerate Attention by Searching Where to Plug

Recently, many plug-and-play self-attention modules are proposed to enhance the model generalization by exploiting the internal information of deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs). Previous works lay an emphasis on the design of attention module for specific functionality, e.g., light-weighted or task-oriented attention. However, they ignore the importance of where to plug in the attention module since they connect the modules individually with each block of the entire CNN backbone for granted, leading to incremental computational cost and number of parameters with the growth of network depth. Thus, we propose a framework called Efficient Attention Network (EAN) to improve the efficiency for the existing attention modules. In EAN, we leverage the sharing mechanism (Huang et al. 2020) to share the attention module within the backbone and search where to connect the shared attention module via reinforcement learning. Finally, we obtain the attention network with sparse connections between the backbone and modules, while (1) maintaining accuracy (2) reducing extra parameter increment and (3) accelerating inference. Extensive experiments on widely-used benchmarks and popular attention networks show the effectiveness of EAN. Furthermore, we empirically illustrate that our EAN has the capacity of transferring to other tasks and capturing the informative features. DIANet: Dense-and-Implicit Attention Network

Attention networks have successfully boosted the performance in various vision problems. Previous works lay emphasis on designing a new attention module and individually plug them into the networks. Our paper proposes a novel-and-simple framework that shares an attention module throughout different network layers to encourage the integration of layer-wise information and this parameter-sharing module is referred as Dense-and-Implicit-Attention (DIA) unit. Many choices of modules can be used in the DIA unit. Since Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) has a capacity of capturing long-distance dependency, we focus on the case when the DIA unit is the modified LSTM (refer as DIA-LSTM). Experiments on benchmark datasets show that the DIA-LSTM unit is capable of emphasizing layer-wise feature interrelation and leads to significant improvement of image classification accuracy. We further empirically show that the DIA-LSTM has a strong regularization ability on stabilizing the training of deep networks by the experiments with the removal of skip connections or Batch Normalization in the whole residual network. Let's Think Outside the Box: Exploring Leap-of-Thought in Large Language Models with Creative Humor Generation

Chain-of-Thought (CoT) guides large language models (LLMs) to reason step-by-step, and can motivate their logical reasoning ability. While effective for logical tasks, CoT is not conducive to creative problem-solving which often requires out-of-box thoughts and is crucial for innovation advancements. In this paper, we explore the Leap-of-Thought (LoT) abilities within LLMs -- a non-sequential, creative paradigm involving strong associations and knowledge leaps. To this end, we study LLMs on the popular Oogiri game which needs participants to have good creativity and strong associative thinking for responding unexpectedly and humorously to the given image, text, or both, and thus is suitable for LoT study. Then to investigate LLMs' LoT ability in the Oogiri game, we first build a multimodal and multilingual Oogiri-GO dataset which contains over 130,000 samples from the Oogiri game, and observe the insufficient LoT ability or failures of most existing LLMs on the Oogiri game. Accordingly, we introduce a creative Leap-of-Thought (CLoT) paradigm to improve LLM's LoT ability. CLoT first formulates the Oogiri-GO dataset into LoT-oriented instruction tuning data to train pretrained LLM for achieving certain LoT humor generation and discrimination abilities. Then CLoT designs an explorative self-refinement that encourages the LLM to generate more creative LoT data via exploring parallels between seemingly unrelated concepts and selects high-quality data to train itself for self-refinement. CLoT not only excels in humor generation in the Oogiri game but also boosts creative abilities in various tasks like cloud guessing game and divergent association task. These findings advance our understanding and offer a pathway to improve LLMs' creative capacities for innovative applications across domains. Judge, Then Drive: A Critic-Centric Vision Language Action Framework for Autonomous Driving

Recent advances in vision language action (VLA) models have shown remarkable potential for autonomous driving by directly mapping multimodal inputs to control signals. However, previous VLA-based methods have not explicitly exploited the critic capability of VLAs to refine driving decisions, even though such capability has been well demonstrated in other LLM-based domains, thereby limiting their performance in complex closed-loop scenarios. In this work, we present a theoretically inspired two-stage framework, CriticVLA, which extends the role of VLAs from acting to judging. CriticVLA first generates a rough trajectory and then refines it through multimodal evaluation and single-step optimization guided by a VLA-based critic, yielding higher-quality driving behaviors. To support this process, we construct a large-scale synthetic dataset of 12.9 million annotated trajectories covering diverse driving scenarios, which enhances the critic's reasoning and refinement abilities. Extensive closed-loop experiments on the Bench2Drive benchmark show that CriticVLA significantly surpasses state-of-the-art baselines, achieving a 73.33% total success rate and delivering about 30% improvement in challenging scenarios.

A Causality-aware Paradigm for Evaluating Creativity of Multimodal Large Language Models

Recently, numerous benchmarks have been developed to evaluate the logical reasoning abilities of large language models (LLMs). However, assessing the equally important creative capabilities of LLMs is challenging due to the subjective, diverse, and data-scarce nature of creativity, especially in multimodal scenarios. In this paper, we consider the comprehensive pipeline for evaluating the creativity of multimodal LLMs, with a focus on suitable evaluation platforms and methodologies. First, we find the Oogiri game, a creativity-driven task requiring humor, associative thinking, and the ability to produce unexpected responses to text, images, or both. This game aligns well with the input-output structure of modern multimodal LLMs and benefits from a rich repository of high-quality, human-annotated creative responses, making it an ideal platform for studying LLM creativity. Next, beyond using the Oogiri game for standard evaluations like ranking and selection, we propose LoTbench, an interactive, causality-aware evaluation framework, to further address some intrinsic risks in standard evaluations, such as information leakage and limited interpretability. The proposed LoTbench not only quantifies LLM creativity more effectively but also visualizes the underlying creative thought processes. Our results show that while most LLMs exhibit constrained creativity, the performance gap between LLMs and humans is not insurmountable. Furthermore, we observe a strong correlation between results from the multimodal cognition benchmark MMMU and LoTbench, but only a weak connection with traditional creativity metrics. This suggests that LoTbench better aligns with human cognitive theories, highlighting cognition as a critical foundation in the early stages of creativity and enabling the bridging of diverse concepts. https://lotbench.github.io

AnimateZoo: Zero-shot Video Generation of Cross-Species Animation via Subject Alignment

Recent video editing advancements rely on accurate pose sequences to animate subjects. However, these efforts are not suitable for cross-species animation due to pose misalignment between species (for example, the poses of a cat differs greatly from that of a pig due to differences in body structure). In this paper, we present AnimateZoo, a zero-shot diffusion-based video generator to address this challenging cross-species animation issue, aiming to accurately produce animal animations while preserving the background. The key technique used in our AnimateZoo is subject alignment, which includes two steps. First, we improve appearance feature extraction by integrating a Laplacian detail booster and a prompt-tuning identity extractor. These components are specifically designed to capture essential appearance information, including identity and fine details. Second, we align shape features and address conflicts from differing subjects by introducing a scale-information remover. This ensures accurate cross-species animation. Moreover, we introduce two high-quality animal video datasets featuring a wide variety of species. Trained on these extensive datasets, our model is capable of generating videos characterized by accurate movements, consistent appearance, and high-fidelity frames, without the need for the pre-inference fine-tuning that prior arts required. Extensive experiments showcase the outstanding performance of our method in cross-species action following tasks, demonstrating exceptional shape adaptation capability. BridgeDrive: Diffusion Bridge Policy for Closed-Loop Trajectory Planning in Autonomous Driving

Diffusion-based planners have shown great promise for autonomous driving due to their ability to capture multi-modal driving behaviors. However, guiding these models effectively in reactive, closed-loop environments remains a significant challenge. Simple conditioning often fails to provide sufficient guidance in complex and dynamic driving scenarios. Recent work attempts to use typical expert driving behaviors (i.e., anchors) to guide diffusion models but relies on a truncated schedule, which introduces theoretical inconsistencies and can compromise performance. To address this, we introduce BridgeDrive, a novel anchor-guided diffusion bridge policy for closed-loop trajectory planning. Our approach provides a principled diffusion framework that effectively translates anchors into fine-grained trajectory plans, appropriately responding to varying traffic conditions. Our planner is compatible with efficient ODE solvers, a critical factor for real-time autonomous driving deployment. We achieve state-of-the-art performance on the Bench2Drive benchmark, improving the success rate by 5% over prior arts.

Multimodal Representation-disentangled Information Bottleneck for Multimodal Recommendation

Multimodal data has significantly advanced recommendation systems by integrating diverse information sources to model user preferences and item characteristics. However, these systems often struggle with redundant and irrelevant information, which can degrade performance. Most existing methods either fuse multimodal information directly or use rigid architectural separation for disentanglement, failing to adequately filter noise and model the complex interplay between modalities. To address these challenges, we propose a novel framework, the Multimodal Representation-disentangled Information Bottleneck (MRdIB). Concretely, we first employ a Multimodal Information Bottleneck to compress the input representations, effectively filtering out task-irrelevant noise while preserving rich semantic information. Then, we decompose the information based on its relationship with the recommendation target into unique, redundant, and synergistic components. We achieve this decomposition with a series of constraints: a unique information learning objective to preserve modality-unique signals, a redundant information learning objective to minimize overlap, and a synergistic information learning objective to capture emergent information. By optimizing these objectives, MRdIB guides a model to learn more powerful and disentangled representations. Extensive experiments on several competitive models and three benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and versatility of our MRdIB in enhancing multimodal recommendation.

AssoCiAm: A Benchmark for Evaluating Association Thinking while Circumventing Ambiguity

Recent advancements in multimodal large language models (MLLMs) have garnered significant attention, offering a promising pathway toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). Among the essential capabilities required for AGI, creativity has emerged as a critical trait for MLLMs, with association serving as its foundation. Association reflects a model' s ability to think creatively, making it vital to evaluate and understand. While several frameworks have been proposed to assess associative ability, they often overlook the inherent ambiguity in association tasks, which arises from the divergent nature of associations and undermines the reliability of evaluations. To address this issue, we decompose ambiguity into two types-internal ambiguity and external ambiguity-and introduce AssoCiAm, a benchmark designed to evaluate associative ability while circumventing the ambiguity through a hybrid computational method. We then conduct extensive experiments on MLLMs, revealing a strong positive correlation between cognition and association. Additionally, we observe that the presence of ambiguity in the evaluation process causes MLLMs' behavior to become more random-like. AlterSGD: Finding Flat Minima for Continual Learning by Alternative Training

Deep neural networks suffer from catastrophic forgetting when learning multiple knowledge sequentially, and a growing number of approaches have been proposed to mitigate this problem. Some of these methods achieved considerable performance by associating the flat local minima with forgetting mitigation in continual learning. However, they inevitably need (1) tedious hyperparameters tuning, and (2) additional computational cost. To alleviate these problems, in this paper, we propose a simple yet effective optimization method, called AlterSGD, to search for a flat minima in the loss landscape. In AlterSGD, we conduct gradient descent and ascent alternatively when the network tends to converge at each session of learning new knowledge. Moreover, we theoretically prove that such a strategy can encourage the optimization to converge to a flat minima. We verify AlterSGD on continual learning benchmark for semantic segmentation and the empirical results show that we can significantly mitigate the forgetting and outperform the state-of-the-art methods with a large margin under challenging continual learning protocols.

Blending Pruning Criteria for Convolutional Neural Networks

The advancement of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) on various vision applications has attracted lots of attention. Yet the majority of CNNs are unable to satisfy the strict requirement for real-world deployment. To overcome this, the recent popular network pruning is an effective method to reduce the redundancy of the models. However, the ranking of filters according to their "importance" on different pruning criteria may be inconsistent. One filter could be important according to a certain criterion, while it is unnecessary according to another one, which indicates that each criterion is only a partial view of the comprehensive "importance". From this motivation, we propose a novel framework to integrate the existing filter pruning criteria by exploring the criteria diversity. The proposed framework contains two stages: Criteria Clustering and Filters Importance Calibration. First, we condense the pruning criteria via layerwise clustering based on the rank of "importance" score. Second, within each cluster, we propose a calibration factor to adjust their significance for each selected blending candidates and search for the optimal blending criterion via Evolutionary Algorithm. Quantitative results on the CIFAR-100 and ImageNet benchmarks show that our framework outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines, regrading to the compact model performance after pruning.

Convolution-Weight-Distribution Assumption: Rethinking the Criteria of Channel Pruning

Channel pruning is a popular technique for compressing convolutional neural networks (CNNs), where various pruning criteria have been proposed to remove the redundant filters. From our comprehensive experiments, we found two blind spots in the study of pruning criteria: (1) Similarity: There are some strong similarities among several primary pruning criteria that are widely cited and compared. According to these criteria, the ranks of filters'Importance Score are almost identical, resulting in similar pruned structures. (2) Applicability: The filters'Importance Score measured by some pruning criteria are too close to distinguish the network redundancy well. In this paper, we analyze these two blind spots on different types of pruning criteria with layer-wise pruning or global pruning. The analyses are based on the empirical experiments and our assumption (Convolutional Weight Distribution Assumption) that the well-trained convolutional filters each layer approximately follow a Gaussian-alike distribution. This assumption has been verified through systematic and extensive statistical tests.

Instance Enhancement Batch Normalization: an Adaptive Regulator of Batch Noise

Batch Normalization (BN)(Ioffe and Szegedy 2015) normalizes the features of an input image via statistics of a batch of images and hence BN will bring the noise to the gradient of the training loss. Previous works indicate that the noise is important for the optimization and generalization of deep neural networks, but too much noise will harm the performance of networks. In our paper, we offer a new point of view that self-attention mechanism can help to regulate the noise by enhancing instance-specific information to obtain a better regularization effect. Therefore, we propose an attention-based BN called Instance Enhancement Batch Normalization (IEBN) that recalibrates the information of each channel by a simple linear transformation. IEBN has a good capacity of regulating noise and stabilizing network training to improve generalization even in the presence of two kinds of noise attacks during training. Finally, IEBN outperforms BN with only a light parameter increment in image classification tasks for different network structures and benchmark datasets.
