Stegomalware: A Systematic Survey of MalwareHiding and Detection in Images, Machine LearningModels and Research Challenges

Rajasekhar Chaganti, Vinayakumar Ravi, Mamoun Alazab et al.

Malware distribution to the victim network is commonly performed through file attachments in phishing email or from the internet, when the victim interacts with the source of infection. To detect and prevent the malware distribution in the victim machine, the existing end device security applications may leverage techniques such as signature or anomaly-based, machine learning techniques. The well-known file formats Portable Executable (PE) for Windows and Executable and Linkable Format (ELF) for Linux based operating system are used for malware analysis, and the malware detection capabilities of these files has been well advanced for real-time detection. But the malware payload hiding in multimedia using steganography detection has been a challenge for enterprises, as these are rarely seen and usually act as a stager in sophisticated attacks. In this article, to our knowledge, we are the first to try to address the knowledge gap between the current progress in image steganography and steganalysis academic research focusing on data hiding and the review of the stegomalware (malware payload hiding in images) targeting enterprises with cyberattacks current status. We present the stegomalware history, generation tools, file format specification description. Based on our findings, we perform the detail review of the image steganography techniques including the recent Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) based models and the image steganalysis methods including the Deep Learning(DL) models for hiding data detection. Additionally, the stegomalware detection framework for enterprise is proposed for anomaly based stegomalware detection emphasizing the architecture details for different network environments. Finally, the research opportunities and challenges in stegomalware generation and detection are also presented.

Genetic CFL: Optimization of Hyper-Parameters in Clustered Federated Learning

Shaashwat Agrawal, Sagnik Sarkar, Mamoun Alazab et al.

Federated learning (FL) is a distributed model for deep learning that integrates client-server architecture, edge computing, and real-time intelligence. FL has the capability of revolutionizing machine learning (ML) but lacks in the practicality of implementation due to technological limitations, communication overhead, non-IID (independent and identically distributed) data, and privacy concerns. Training a ML model over heterogeneous non-IID data highly degrades the convergence rate and performance. The existing traditional and clustered FL algorithms exhibit two main limitations, including inefficient client training and static hyper-parameter utilization. To overcome these limitations, we propose a novel hybrid algorithm, namely genetic clustered FL (Genetic CFL), that clusters edge devices based on the training hyper-parameters and genetically modifies the parameters cluster-wise. Then, we introduce an algorithm that drastically increases the individual cluster accuracy by integrating the density-based clustering and genetic hyper-parameter optimization. The results are bench-marked using MNIST handwritten digit dataset and the CIFAR-10 dataset. The proposed genetic CFL shows significant improvements and works well with realistic cases of non-IID and ambiguous data.

Next-Generation Big Data Federation Access Control: A Reference Model

Feras M. Awaysheh, Mamoun Alazab, Maanak Gupta et al.

This paper discusses one of the most significant challenges of next-generation big data (BD) federation platforms, namely, Hadoop access control. Privacy and security on a federation scale remain significant concerns among practitioners. Hadoop's current primitive access control presents security concerns and limitations, such as the complexity of deployment and the consumption of resources. However, this major concern has not been a subject of intensive study in the literature. This paper critically reviews and investigates these security limitations and provides a framework called BD federation access broker to address 8 main security limitations. This paper proposes the federated access control reference model (FACRM) to formalize the design of secure BD solutions within the Apache Hadoop stack. Furthermore, this paper discusses the implementation of the access broker and its usefulness for security breach detection and digital forensics investigations. The efficiency of the proposed access broker has not sustainably affected the performance overhead. The experimental results show only 1\% of each 100 MB read/write operation in a WebHDFS. Overall, the findings of the paper pave the way for a wide range of revolutionary and state-of-the-art enhancements and future trends within Hadoop stack security and privacy.

Redundancy Coefficient Gradual Up-weighting-based Mutual Information Feature Selection Technique for Crypto-ransomware Early Detection

Bander Ali Saleh Al-rimy, Mohd Aizaini Maarof, Syed Zainudeen Mohd Shaid

Crypto-ransomware is characterized by its irreversible effect even after the detection and removal. As such, the early detection is crucial to protect user data and files of being held to ransom. Several solutions have proposed utilizing the data extracted during the initial phases of the attacks before the encryption takes place. However, the lack of enough data at the early phases of the attack along with high dimensional features space renders the model prone to overfitting which decreases its detection accuracy. To this end, this paper proposed a novel redundancy coefficient gradual up-weighting approach that was incorporated to the calculation of redundancy term of mutual information to improve the feature selection process and enhance the accuracy of the detection model. Several machine learning classifiers were used to evaluate the detection performance of the proposed techniques. The experimental results show that the accuracy of proposed techniques achieved higher detection accuracy. Those results demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed techniques for the early detection tasks.
